One of the best portrayals of social anxiety before we even had a term for it. Lt. Barclay is, um, well, you see, one of the engineering crew of the Enterprise. Or IS HE? Special Guest Lucian Khan comes on to explain his insightful theory that this entire episode is on a holodeck WITHIN a holodeck, and honestly we're all kind of sold on the idea once you factor in some of Barclay's forthcoming appearances in Star Trek Voyager. On Monday we recorded a podcast for our patreon supporters with Irish Times Journalist, Jack Power, around the most recent revelations contained in a report about the actions of the late Anthony Flynn and the charity he founded, Inner City Helping Homelessness. We're putting it out on general release now. We discuss the details of the report, as well as the initial early reporting that led up to it. Jack has reported on cases of sexual abuse within organisations like St John's Ambulance and Scouting Ireland, so we ask are there common themes and what learnings are we failing to make. Warning: Contains references to sexual abuse. For help please see HERE
At noon we recorded another bumper Sunday Special with a brilliant panel of Dr. Jennifer Kavanagh, Emma DeSouza, Lilith Ferreyra-Carroll and Mick Clifford. We discussed Mick's recent reporting on ICHH, the handling of allegations of sexual assault and a potential hierarchy of victimhood. We dived into President Michael D. Higgins decision to not attend a Partition Commemoration and the messages it sends. We talked the use and misuse of Dáil privilege and we had an important conversation about the UK court overturning the Bell vs Tavistock judgement and the implications that has for the Trans Community. Also reminder to check out #TravellerPrideWeek, kicking off Sept 20th. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack

Ireland's homeless crisis is at breaking point Yesterday the tragic news emerged of the death of two men who were experiencing homelessness. It's brought to light the still very present homeless crisis in Dublin. 2020 will see the highest number of deaths within homelessness ever within a calendar year. However, with 2020 being such a tough year for everyone, have we forgotten those less fortunate? Have we become desensitised to the issue? This morning on Dublin Talks we spoke to Inner City Helping Homeless to find out how we can help. We also hear from a woman who's currently experiencing homelessness. Listen back now: [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2020/11/26124120/201126-death-of-two-homeless-men-with-ICHH.mp3"][/audio] TUNE IN TO DUBLIN TALKS LIVE EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING FROM 10AM, ONLY ON 98FM Check out all of our podcasts here.
Inner City Helping Homeless, the non-profit registered charity supporting Ireland’s homeless, has launched its first-ever virtual Santabox Appeal. It is hoped that through this new online platform, the charity can recoup some of the €200,000 worth of fundraising it has already missed out on this year due to the pandemic, and also help ensure essential gifts are delivered to those who need them most this Christmas. Normally one of the biggest donation-drives for the charity annually, this year’s Santabox Appeal was expected to only take in around 10% of normal donation levels due to current level five restrictions and social distancing requirements. However, Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) has partnered with Expleo, the technology partner for innovative companies, to develop a new digital platform to enable donors to buy a virtual Santabox that will be packed and presented to those in need by a team of socially-distanced elves. These Santaboxes are filled with essentials such as clothes, toys and toiletries along with a Christmas gift voucher. The contents of the Santaboxes will be tailored specially to the recipient based on gender and age. The latest Department of Housing homeless figures released in October found that there were 8,656 homeless people in Ireland, made up of 6,073 adults and 2,583 children who are currently living in emergency accommodation. Brian McLoughlin, Head of Communications and Fundraising at Inner City Helping Homeless said: “We are delighted to launch our Virtual Santabox Appeal with our corporate charity partners Expleo. By bringing our appeal online it will allow people to continue to support our annual appeal from the safety of their own homes. “The major reduction in footfall nationwide due to COVID-19 restrictions means the difficulties confronting the homeless have become more pronounced. We hope the public will get behind the online appeal which will enable us to provide Santa Boxes to families and individuals in emergency accommodation, on the streets, families in Direct Provision centres as well as those living alone. “This has been a tough year for everyone, and we endeavour to put a smile on as many faces as possible this Christmas.” Phil Codd, Managing Director of Expleo Ireland said: “We’re delighted to support such a worthy cause by digitally transforming the Santabox fundraising appeal and ensuring Inner City Helping Homeless can carry out their amazing work again this Christmas. “Through our ‘Rebooting Ireland’ initiative, which was launched earlier this year to help companies to innovate and digitise to continue in business throughout COVID-19, we designed an online platform for ICHH that provides donors with the ability to choose who will receive their Santabox and offers an opportunity to send a personalised Christmas message to the recipient. “When we first met with ICHH they were concerned that some people may end up going without a Christmas gift this year. We hope that our new platform will help them exceed all previous records for Santaboxes collected and, crucially, provide vital support to those who need it most at this time of year. ” Donors can pay between €15 and €35 to purchase individual Christmas gifts. Ireland already had a housing and homelessness emergency before the Covid-19 pandemic. While the emergency response has received near universal acclaim we'd seen the number of people still sleeping on our streets still very high. So we caught up with Independent Dublin City Councillor and CEO of Inner City Helping Homelessness, Anthony Flynn, to discuss what is going right, what is going wrong and where is the money going to. We also discuss the lack of oversight at local government level and the feeling that the same old people are profiting from this crisis. Note: I say on the pod that the State are renting private hospitals for €11m per month, the most recent figure available is €130m per month and I've also received secondary verification that a well known vulture fund is "renting" properties to the State for emergency accommodation during the pandemic. #NoGoingBack. James Goldsbury has been volunteering with ICHH (Inner-City Helping Homeless) for the past year and is hosting a comedy gig to raise much needed funds for the brilliant (& unfortunately very necessary) work they do. In this episode James shares with us some experiences he has acquired volunteering with the ICHH, the work the ICHH do, the people he has met, the stories he has encountered and the issues faced by many. In addition to the homelessness situation & housing crisis, we also chat about James's obsession with the number 11, having higher than average bone density, being fit and fine at fifty, grip strength (which I make dirty), Terry Jones, Monty Python, the upcoming election and we go on respective rants about 'buying to let', luas tracks, political printer, conflicts of interest and various other tidbits. If you're interested in helping to support ICHH, check out their website... or get involved with / support any or all of the many charities working to help people who are currently without a home or safe place to sleep and live. The line-up for the gig is amazing (I'm on it, enough said!) ;) and it takes place THURSDAY JAN 30th in The Workman's Club, Dublin. Tickets on Eventbrite or Workman's sites, as well as on the door. See you there! :)
Award winning comedian James Goldsbury joined Cormac and Saoirse to share some of his worst experiences on stage and talk about the up coming gig he is doing for the ICHH charity at the end of this month. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
