SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 124*Galaxies: Bigger Than We Ever ImaginedRecent findings suggest that galaxies are far larger than previously thought, with gaseous halos extending much further into intergalactic space. This study, published in Nature Astronomy, focuses on the circumgalactic medium of a starburst galaxy 270 million light-years away. These halos, accounting for about 70% of a galaxy's mass excluding dark matter, may already be interacting with neighboring galaxies like Andromeda and the Milky Way. The research offers fresh insights into galaxy evolution, gas cycling, and the cosmic web.*Ancient Microbes Found in Billion-Year-Old RocksScientists have discovered living microbes in 2 billion-year-old rocks from South Africa's Bushveld Igneous Complex. This groundbreaking find, published in Microbial Ecology, represents the oldest known living microorganisms. The study utilized advanced imaging techniques to confirm the microbes were native to the ancient rock, offering a glimpse into early life on Earth and potential clues for extraterrestrial life on Mars.*Vulcan Centaur Rocket's Successful LaunchThe United Launch Alliance's new Vulcan Centaur rocket overcame a faulty booster to successfully place its payload into orbit. Despite the anomaly, the mission proceeded from Cape Canaveral, marking an important step towards using Vulcan for high-priority payloads. This launch follows Vulcan's maiden voyage and highlights the transition from older Atlas V and Delta IV rockets. The Science Report00:00:00 - This is spacetime series 27, episode 124 for broadcast on the 14 October 202400:00:48 - New study finds that galaxies are much larger than previously thought00:06:25 - Galaxy is 270 million light years away and is a star bursting galaxy00:17:18 - United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket has overcome a faulty strap on booster00:22:12 - The 2024 Nobel Prizes for Science were awarded this week00:24:56 - A new study finds two diametrically opposed personalities enjoy magic the mostwww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com
A fascinating conversation with Deborah Tchoudjinoff and Oscar Salguero about geology, minerals, technology and fictionDeborah is a multidisciplinary artist based in London who works across sculpture and digital media. She has worked with AR, VR, Unreal Engine, combined with sculpture made from wood or metal to present mixed media installations. Often beginning with a locality or research concept, she considers what the form is through the process of material and visual experimentations. Her practice engages with the temporal and spatial aspects of ecologies, in particular how technology, constructs, remembers, and forgets the stories of past and future ecologies. She is influenced by fiction, world-building, and otherworldly aesthetics.Oscar is an independent curator, researcher, and archivist. His exhibition NEO MINERALIA presented a selection of new geological specimens crafted by ten international artists. The exhibition suggests recent rock formations no longer fit within the traditional groups: Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary. Instead, the era of human influence on the climate and environment has introduced two post-natural rocks: Synthetic and Digital. Salguero is also the founder of Interspecies Library - the first archive dedicated to the study and advancement of artists' books exploring alternative interspecies futures.Deborah is on Instagram at: deboraht_ffOscar is on Instagram at softcorenyFind us on Instagram at Mater________Our website it mater.digitalProjects & people referenced:The Toaster Project, Thomas Thwaites, 2011Neo Mineralia, Oscar SalgueroSae Honda, Everybody Needs a RockWorks by Deborah Tchoudjinoff Ceramic Material AtlasLehman BrothersEarth Emotions by Glenn Albrecht Hosted on Acast. First Phosphate Corp CEO John Passalacqua and Chief Geologist Gilles Laverdiere joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce the third set of assay results from its ongoing 25,000 metres drill program at the Bégin-Lamarche project in Quebec. With a total of 23,398 meters drilled, assays from 9,155 meters have been completed, while 4,691 samples are still pending at the laboratory. The latest positive results include significant intersections in various zones of the project. In the Phosphate Mountain Zone, drill hole BL-24-56 intersected 11.82% P2O5 over 92.5 meters from a surface depth of 6.5 meters. This zone exhibits a thick layer of phosphate-bearing nelsonite outcropping on the surface, with several other high-grade intersections exceeding 10% P2O5. The Phosphate Mountain Zone is merging with the Northern Zone, which has delineated a 500-meter-thick phosphate mineralized envelope containing up to five individual layers ranging from 60 to 100 meters in thickness. The combined strike length of the Phosphate Mountain Zone and the Northern Zone is approximately 600 meters. In the Northern Zone itself, drill hole BL-24-40 intersected 7.76% P2O5 over 88.2 meters from a depth of 186.0 meters, including 9.33% P2O5 over 61.2 meters. Positive results were also observed in the Northwestern Zone and Southern Zone, indicating the project's robust mineralization potential across multiple areas. #proactiveinvestors #firstphosphatecorp #phosphate #BéginLamarcheproject #CEOInterview #MiningNews, #PhosphateMining, #ResourceDevelopment, #DrillingUpdate, #JohnPassalacqua, #GillesLaverdière, #MiningTechnology, #QuebecMining, #SustainableResources, #MiningIndustry, #Geology, #EconomicAssessment, #InvestorInsights, #CorporateMining, #EnergyMaterials, #ResourceEstimation, #MineralExploration, #MiningInnovation, #IndustrialMinerals, #PhosphateRock, #CanadianMining, #ExplorationGeology, #MiningOperations, #StrategicMinerals#CompanyUpdate #StrategicGrowth #SustainableMining #GreenApproach #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
At roughly 15-25-million-year intervals since the Archean, huge volumes of lava have spewed onto the Earth's surface. These form the large igneous provinces, which are called flood basalts when they occur on continents. As Richard Ernst explains in the podcast, the eruption of a large igneous province can initiate the rifting of continents, disrupt the environment enough to cause a mass extinction, and promote mineralization that produces valuable mineral resources. Richard Ernst studies the huge volcanic events called Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) — their structure, distribution, and origin as well as their connection with mineral, metal, and hydrocarbon resources; supercontinent breakup; and mass extinctions. He has also been studying LIP planetary analogues, especially on Venus and Mars. He has written the definitive textbook on the subject. Ernst is Scientist in Residence in the Department of Earth Sciences, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, and Professor in the Faculty of Geology and Geography at Tomsk State University, Tomsk, Russia.

Alan is somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and Thom has been dissecting fish left right and centre at Te Papa. What better time to talk about deep-sea digging? After the exciting news last month about the geological cruise that drilled through the Moho (the area where the Earth's crust meets the mantle), we thought it would be interesting to talk with Andrew McCaig, the co-chief scientist for that expedition. Andrew talks us through the expedition's goals, achievements and the drilling process itself. Why were geologists interested in reaching this area and what exactly is serpentinisation? We also hear from two other crew members onboard the JOIDES Resolution during the 399 expedition, Igneous petrologist, Kuan Yu Lin and marine technician Luan Heywood. Kuan and Luan talk us through their experiences of working onboard the research vessel and why expedition 399 was so special. We also hear from previous guest and great friend of the show, Ashley Rowden (his interview on seamounts can be found in episode 30). We grabbed him quickly before he chaired the deep sea session at the New Zealand Marine Science Society conference and he treated us to a great story of James Cameron's involvement in a previous conference that Ashley was organising. Continuing with the origins of everything that is, I present the history of planet Earth, from its birth to the age of mammals. Included:How old is the earth? What are the oldest rocks ever found? How old is life itself? When did multicellular organisms arise? When did life leave the sea for land? What percentage of species has survived until the current time? What were the 5 biggest mass extrinction events in history? And much more...information that sounds, admittedly, tedious, but only because it is. But! Can you truly know about yourself without knowing about the universe, solar system, and planet that are a part of you?

So far we've considered physics and biology in our exploration of scripture and science. Today we begin to consider how earth science and the bible fit together. This becomes particularly significant when considering interpretations for Noah's flood. We'll get to that next time. But, for today, our teacher will lay out the basics of geology and earth science to give us a good overview. He'll also cover radiometric dating, which has a bearing on how scientists determine the age of the earth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VzgrLAFXfg&embeds_euri=https%3A%2F%2Flhim.org%2F&feature=emb_imp_woyt See below for notes. —— Links —— We are doing follow-up discussions to these episodes on YouTube. Who is Sean Finnegan? Read his bio here —— Notes —— Geology, Earth Science, and Atmospheric Science • Geology• Important cycles• Plate tectonics Geology • Types of rocks/rock cycle• Geological principles• Dating methods• Structure of the Earth What is Geology? Geology is the study of the Earth and the processes related to the Earth. • Geologists study rocks (and the rock cycle)• Subfields include atmospheric studies (meteorology), volcanology (studying volcanos), and mineralogy (study of minerals) Types of Rocks There are three major categories of rocks: • Sedimentary - formed by pressure acting on sediment• Igneous - formed by lava• Metamorphic - formed by extreme pressure and heat The Rock Cycle Since wind and water are constantly affecting change, there is a rock cycle. Geological Principles There are several main principles of geology: • Superposition• Cross-cutting relationships• Uniformitarianism Dating Methods There are major types of dating: • Absolute dating• Relative dating Absolute Dating Absolute dating is based on radioactive decay. What is radioactive decay? • Some forms of certain elements are (by nature) unstable• Over time, these elements change on the atomic level (sometimes losing protons and neutrons; sometimes exchanging protons and neutrons, etc.) Carbon Dating Carbon dating uses the decay of Carbon - 14 • Carbon - 12 has 6 neutrons and 6 protons• Carbon - 13 has 7 neutrons and 6 protons• Carbon - 14 has 8 neutrons and 6 protons What happens when Carbon - 14 decays? • Carbon - 14 exchanges a neutron for a proton• This changes the element from carbon to nitrogen• The reaction also produces an electron and an antineutrino So, how does this tell us anything about dating? • Radioactive decay is a process that is well understood• The half-life for carbon - 14 is ~5,700 years• This means, that it takes 5,700 years for the amount of carbon -14 in a sample to cut in half Is carbon dating exact? • No - it's a statistical process• However, there is a range of probable dates given Relative Dating What is relative dating? • Relative dating uses the geological principles of superposition and cross-cutting relationships to provide estimates on how old certain features are• Example: dating a rock layer based on the age of another layer (dated using radiometric dating) Structure of the Earth How do scientists know about the structure of the Earth? • Scientists understand what waves do when they hit various materials (ex: ultrasound imaging)• Seismological data from earthquakes has given us insight into the structure of the Earth The Water Cycle The water cycle is the process by which water goes through the phases of liquid, gas, and solid. • The water cycle helps moderate temperatures on Earth• The water cycle also supports life through crops and drinking water Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles Carbon and nitrogen also experience cycles of solid, liquid, and gas. • The carbon cycle is important for the support of life.• Disruption of the carbon cycle is one of the biggest fears of those promoting climate change. Plate Tectonics History of plate tectonics • Ancients did not believe in tectonic separation• In 1620, Sir Francis Bacon noted that Africa and South America looked like they could have fit together• Similar animal fossils and other pieces of evidence started getting scientists' attention• In 1925, Alfred Wegener formally proposed plate tectonic theory and was ridiculed.• In 1930, Wegener died while on expedition in Greenland, trying to find evidence for his theory.• In the late 1960s, almost overnight, the theory of plate tectonics reached scientific mainstream. Evidence for plate tectonics: • Paleomagnetic data• Similar rock outcroppings• Fossil evidence• Spreading of the sea floor• Direct evidence - we can observe the movement! Challenges to plate tectonics: • Where is the energy coming from?• Why are the continental plates moving like they are? “Even today, many questions pertaining to plate tectonics remain unanswered. Many exceptions to rigid rules have been found throughout the world. Although classical plate tectonic theory works well for oceanic crust, it has a difficult time explaining the motion of the continents”— Jon Erickson, Plate Tectonics, page 259. Challenges for Geology There are several concerns with geology as a science: • The principle of uniformitarianism is impossible to prove and so it's an assumption• Relative dating techniques can use circular logic at times

Podcast: History of the Earth (LS 42 · TOP 1.5% what is this?)Episode: Episode 397 CarbonatitesPub date: 2018-04-30Notes from Listening Post:Thorium Carbonatites are strange igneous rocks made up mostly of carbonates – common minerals like calcite, calcium carbonate. Igneous rocks that solidify from molten magma usually are high-temperature rocks containing lots of silicon which results in lots of quartz, feldspars, micas, and ferro-magnesian minerals in rocks like granite and basalt. Carbonatites crystallize from essentially molten calcite, and that's really unusual. Most carbonatites are intrusive, meaning they solidified within the earth, and it wasn't until 1960 that the first carbonatite volcano erupted in historic times, proving that they form from cooling magma. The eruption at Ol Doinyo Lengai in Tanzania occurred on a branch of the East African Rift System, and most carbonatites are associated with these breaks in continental crust where eventually a new ocean may form. Mt Lengai, Tanzania, photo by Clem23 (Creative Commons License - source) Eruptions at Lengai, whose name means “mountain of god” in the Maasai language, are the lowest-temperature magmas known because calcite melts at a much lower temperature than silica-rich compounds, around 510 degrees C versus 1000 degrees or more for most magmas. It isn't even red-hot like most lava flows. A simple and early interpretation of carbonatites was that they represented melting of limestone, but geochemical data indicate that they really do come from primary igneous material that probably originated in the mantle. Exactly how they form is debated, in part because they are so rare, but one idea is that they result from special cases of differentiation within more common magmas, or maybe an example of certain chemicals – the carbonates – separating out in an unusual way. Another unusual aspect of carbonatites is the minerals associated with the dominant calcite. It's common to get rare-earth compounds, tantalum, thorium, titanium, and many other minerals that are unusual in high concentrations in other settings. The Mountain Pass rare-earth deposit in California, once the largest producer of rare earths in the world, is in a Precambrian carbonatite. Rare earths are used in lots of modern technologies, including turbines for wind energy, batteries in electric car motors, cell phones, solar cells, and eyeglasses. Rare earths are also produced from the Mt. Weld carbonatite in Western Australia, but it's more famous for its tantalum, an element that's vital in capacitors for cell phones, video games, and computers. Australia has by far the greatest reserves of tantalum, but mining didn't begin until 2011 and production is just now ramping up. The United States, which is 100% dependent on imports for tantalum, imports most of it from Brazil, Rwanda, China, and Kazakhstan. Magnetite is a common associated mineral in carbonatites, and at Magnet Cove, Arkansas, there's enough to give the name to the place. It's also rich in titanium, often in the form of the mineral rutile, titanium dioxide. When I was there on a geology field trip in 1969, I remember walking into the Kimzey Calcite Quarry. It was like walking into a giant calcite crystal, with gigantic cleavage faces the size of a person or bigger. We collected lots of cool rutile and pyrite crystals. More common economic minerals can be associated with carbonatites as well. At one in South Africa the main products are copper and vermiculite. While I said earlier that carbonatites are really rare, there are still a few dozen known. It's possible that their rarity is a reflection of the fact that calcite is much more easily eroded and dissolved than the typical basaltic rocks that derive from most volcanoes, so they may simply be poorly preserved. —Richard I.
