Beta, Ireland's festival of art and technology, will return for its second edition with a focus on interrogating the relationship between power and technology, examining how digital tools influence society and how we can take agency back in their use. Co-founded and supported by The Digital Hub, Beta will return from 1st to 17th November and will feature a series of events including two exhibitions, several interactive workshops, performances, a thought-provoking conference, and an assembly focussed on artificial intelligence and art. Cannes Film Festival winner Noire, the Unknown Life of Claudette Colvin will make its Irish debut at this year's Beta Festival. Directed by Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre-Alain Giraud, Noire tells the real-life story of 15-year-old Claudette Colvin, who refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in a segregated 1950s Alabama through an immersive and encapsulating digital performance showing the power of storytelling through technology. Noire is presented by The Digital Hub, the French Embassy in Ireland and Institut Francais, as part of the official Novembre Numérique programme, and is supported by Smart Dublin. This year, Beta will host two exhibitions: the first Unsettling the Algorithm: Seeds of Resistance, is an international exhibition curated by Aisling Murray and Nora O' Murchú. Featuring artists including Irish-Iraqi artist Basil Al-Rawi, Tega Brain and Sam Levigne, Firas Shehadeh, Winnie Soon and Tzu-Tung Lee, Nora Al Badri and Mediengruppe Bitnik among others, the exhibition will explore how digital infrastructures and algorithms shape, influence and govern our daily lives. Separately, the Local Artists Network will spotlight emerging Irish artists with new work from Conan McIvor, Aisling Phelan, Cailean Finn, and more. Among these installations will be the interactive artwork Boogaloo Bias, which explores the dangers of unregulated use of facial recognitiontechnology particularly among law enforcement. Created by Jennifer Gradecki and Derek Curry, the project examines the practice of 'brute forcing', where law enforcement substitutes images of celebrities resembling suspects when high-quality images are unavailable and explores themes of accountability and bias in automated systems. Keynote addresses by cognitive behavioural scientist and member of the UN's AI Advisory Board Abebe Birhane and Head of Arts Technologiesat London's Serpentine Gallery Kay Watson will be delivered at the conference, while several workshops, discussions and think-ins will be hosted by ADAPT research centre, the Creative Futures Academy, Fire Station Artists' Studios and Creative Spark during the festival. Assembly on Art and AI will bring together AI researchers, policy makers, cultural leaders and artists to explore the impact of artificial intelligence on arts and culture and identify challenges and opportunities to fuel a rolling agenda of areas to consider when creating policy centred on AI. Cold Call, a call centre created by Tega Brain and Sam Lavigne that reimagines carbon offsetting, by transforming the concept of time theft - a form of resistance where employees deliberately slow productivity - into a carbon-saving strategy aimed at high-emission companies. The physical yoga practices have a pre-history in a tantric Buddhist milieu but were here adapted for a Śaiva audience. The treatise explains how Śaiva yogis move kuṇḍalinī, unite Śakti with Śiva, and achieve Rājayoga. Three hundred years later, the author of the Haṭhapradīpikā incorporated almost all the Amaraugha's verses on Haṭhayoga into his own work, which became a definitive exposition of physical yoga. The study of the Amaraugha reveals not only the genesis of Haṭha and Rājayoga but also the creation of the most influential model of Haṭhayoga in the early modern period. The Amaraugha and Amaraughaprabodha of Goraksanatha (Institut Francais de Pondichery, 2024) presents the first critical edition and annotated translation of the Amaraugha, as well as a later recension, called the Amaraughaprabodha, with an introduction that explores the profound significance of both works for the history of yoga. From the London Film Festival, we discuss the presentation of Stefan and Franciszka Themerson's EUROPA (1931), an extraordinary Polish avant-garde short long thought lost after its confiscation by the Nazis, and Sam reviews Radu Jude's hilarious and timely new feature BAD LUCK BANGING OR LOONY PORN (2021). Next, Emmett reports on Tsai Ming-Liang's long-awaited return to feature filmmaking with the mesmeric DAYS (2020), presented at the Queer East Film Festival. We then discuss the programme at this year's Japanese Avant-garde and Experimental Film Festival, including Shuji Terayama's BOXER (1977), Tatsumi Kumashiro's LOVERS ARE WET (1973) and Kon Ichikawa's TOKYO OLYMPIAD (1965), before rounding things up with a look back on the recent presentation of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet's FROM THE CLOUD TO THE RESISTANCE (1979) at the Institut Francais as part of the Open City Documentary Festival. My guest today is Marlene Laruelle. Marlene is a Research Professor of International Affairs at George Washington University in Washington, DC, where she also holds various administrative functions, including Director of the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies. She is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Institut Francais des Relations Internationales in her native France and a prolific writer on Russian and Central Asian history and politics. This year alone she has two new books out: “Is Russia Fascist? Unraveling Propaganda East and West”, with Cornell University Press, and “Central Peripheries: Nationhood in Central Asia”, with UCL Press.We talk about all things Russia: nationalism, Eurasianism, illiberalism, disinformation, and, of course, Vladimir Putin.

Er ist aktiv, er ist politisch, er ist unruhig. Als Corona kommt, spielt er per Livestream Abend für Abend über Twitter Hauskonzerte, die weltweit von bis zu 60.000 Menschen verfolgt werden. Und zu unserer Freude treffen wir ihn im Institut Francais im Maison de France, wo ein frisch gestimmter Flügel steht, das kann kein Zufall sein.
Contemporary French literature is constantly making its mark on Norwegian public life, with publications which attract attention and arouse debate. But what does the French literary discussion look like from the inside? We have invited Le Monde critic Raphaëlle Leyris to Bergen to give us some insights. Erst als er mit seinem letzten Buch, Le wagon (erschienen 2010), fertig war, realisierte der in Toulouse lebende Schriftsteller, Literaturwissenschaftler und Theaterregisseur Arnaud Rykner, dass sich Kolleginnen und Kollegen seiner Generation, er ist Jahrgang 1967, der selben Epoche, ähnlichen Erinnerungen gewidmet hatten: Den Deportationen aus dem von Deutschen besetzten Frankreich 1944. Rykners Buch gehört zu den mutigsten, sucht seine monologische Erzählstimme doch den Weg in den Eisenbahnwaggon selbst. Im Gespräch berichtet Arnaud Rykner (21.1., Institut Francais) von Leerstellen in der Familienerzählung, von erinnerungskulturellen Sichtweisenwechseln, von der Anreicherung von Namen und Daten, von seinen Zugängen zu Nathalie Sarraute und Marguerite Duras und der Frage, warum sein Buch »Nur« (2007) zugleich einen deutschen und einen arabischen Titel trägt.
