Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo made a date to meet in the Backrooms while Pam Boland watched Say Anything on a plane. So yeah, you could say Movie Squad is back on its bulls***. On their latest Breakfast meeting, Tristan and Simon share their thoughts on Kane Parsons' big screen adaptation of his creepypasta-inspired webseries Backrooms, with Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor falling into his sparse and spooky liminal space. It's now showing in cinemas. Then, they review friend-of-the-show Radu Jude's Dracula, a satirical and obscenely trashy take on Romania's relationship with its famous bloodsucker (and film's relationship to AI), as only the iconoclastic Jude could make. It's now available on digital platforms. Stay tuned for a pod exclusive chat in which Simon and Tristan talk a little more about Radu Jude's provocations, and decide whether or not Chiwetel Ejiofor's unfortunate streak of a decade of bad films has finally ended. Learn about the new season of Tristan's Trash Classics screenings at Luna Cinemas held on the last Friday of every month. Be sure to tune in to RTRFM every Friday at 7:30am to hear Movie Squad live on Breakfast with Pam!

Cannes is almost over, which means it is time to make our Palme d'Or predictions. In this episode, we break down the Cannes competition, make our picks for who we think could win the Palme d'Or, and talk through which films might carry momentum into the Oscar race. We get into the strange energy of this year's festival, the movies that seem built for jury attention, the ones that could break out later, and whether Cannes still feels like the launchpad it used to be.Along the way, we also talk John Travolta's honorary Palme d'Or, Paul Schrader's Cannes grumpiness, Jacob Elordi's jury absence, and the general chaos of trying to read festival buzz from afar. The episode sets up the Palme prediction segment directly in the intro, so this title and thumbnail are aligned with what the show actually promises.Chapters:0:00 Intro0:42 John Travolta's honorary Palme d'Or & Paul Schrader4:24 Setting the stage: Cannes wraps up5:06 Top storylines & the Screen jury grid (Fatherland, Minotaur)9:43 Standing ovations & the clapping arms race12:08 Polarizing films & Fjord (Cristian Mungiu)14:01 Where's Hollywood? For the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, I'm very happy to start the big show with Jordan Cronk, critic and programmer. We discussed a few films from the first big day of programming: Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (directed by Jane Schoenbrun, starring Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder), Nagi Notes (Koji Fukada), and Butterfly Jam (Kantemir Balagov, starring Barry Keoghan, Riley Keough, Harry Messing). But I was also treated to a preview of Directors' Fortnight, the Cannes showcase where Cronk is also a program advisor, and which this year includes films by Radu Jude, Alain Cavalier, Dominga Sotomayor, Lisandro Alonso, longtime Apichatpong Weerasethakul collaborato Sompot Chidgasornpongse, and Bruno Dumont. But that's not all! Cronk also shares his visits to two festivals just before Cannes: Play-Doc in Galicia, where he saw a very intriguing retrospective, Spain, and the Jeonju International Film Festival in Jeonju, South Korea. Cellulite e Celluloide - Il cinema su Radio Elettrica

Kaj naredi film, vreden ponovnega ogleda?

From its nearly three-hour runtime to its deployment of some of the most deranged CGI you've ever seen committed to screen, Radu Jude's DRACULA often feels like an extended act of trolling, but is it art? The answer to that question is inextricable from the film's presentation of AI-derived art as grotesque, inhuman, and unsatisfying, and it makes DRACULA arguably more entertaining to discuss than it is to watch. So after attempting to pull some meaning out of what the critic in 8 1/2 might describe as DRACULA's “series of gratuitous episodes,” we move into Connections for a study in contrasts between Fellini's portrait of an artist struggling to make a personal work, and Jude's evisceration of a charlatan trying to outsource artistry to a machine. Then in Your Next Picture Show, we discuss another film we considered as a DRACULA pairing that may not be quite as celebrated as 8 1/2, but we nonetheless recommend as another depiction of a filmmaker in creative crisis: Christopher Guest's debut feature, THE BIG PICTURE. Please share your thoughts about 8 1/2, DRACULA, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Radu Jude's DRACULA is, technically speaking, yet another movie about one of the most depicted antagonists in all of cinema, but in actuality it's about a different beast that has fascinated filmmakers for nearly as long: filmmaking. Within the grand tradition of “movies about moviemaking,” DRACULA's surreal humor, combined with its focus on a struggling filmmaker fantasizing about the film he might make, gave us an excuse to revisit an all-time classic of the form, Federico Fellini's 8 1/2. So this week we search for meaning within 8 1/2's reveries of a blocked creative mind, interrogate the “semi” part of Fellini's semi-autobiographical approach, and touch on some of the other films that exist in the shadow of this one. Then in Feedback, our recent pairing of RUNNING ON EMPTY and ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER inspires a supplementary-listening suggestion for the former, and a head canon explanation for one of our questions about the latter. Please share your thoughts about 8 1/2, DRACULA, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.Intro: 00:00:00-00:05:128 1/2 Keynote: 00:05:12-00:11:398 1/2 Discussion: 00:11:39-48:26Feedback/outro: 00:48:26-end Learn more about your ad choices. "Dracula" is a Romanian satirical comedy-drama film written and directed by Radu Jude. The film title is inspired by the Gothic horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker, "Dracula." Set in contemporary Transylvania, it explores the legend of Dracula through Romanian lenses while examining modern dystopia through the timeless allure of vampire lore, crafting a biting, gleefully profane takedown of AI, capitalism, and our decaying culture. The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 78th Locarno Film Festival, where it received polarizing reviews. It's par the course for Jude, but he still has his own opinions on how audiences are receiving his 170-minute bonkers film. Jude was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his experience working on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters on October 29th by 1-2 Special. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Ep. 357: Radu Jude on his new film Dracula, plus One Battle After Another, shooting his next film, and more Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Radu Jude's latest film, Dracula, is a fervidly imaginative, joyously profane look at this enduring myth through multiple stories, riffing on past tellings, a dinner theater, Francis Ford Coppola's film, a sweatshop run by vampires, assorted AI grotesquerie, and more. As a fan of Radu Jude's work, I couldn't resist another conversation with the multiple-award-winning Romanian director of Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World. He also dug into the history of the Dracula story in Romania and shared his recent viewing and reading, including thoughts on One Battle After Another. Dracula opens in theaters on October 29. Ep. 311: Radu Jude on his film Kontinental '25, reflecting the world today, and going back to basics Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. It's not every day that I feature the same filmmaker twice in two years on the podcast, but we'll make a delightful exception for Radu Jude, director of Kontinental '25. I spoke with Jude about Kontinental '25 at the Berlin Film Festival, where his film won a Silver Bear, and where Jude previously won the Golden Bear for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn. Kontinental '25 follows a bailiff (an outstanding Eszter Tompa) who faces a personal reckoning after she evicts a man. True to the director of the rambunctious Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, our conversation features his thoughtful reflections on living in the world today, on filmmaking technique, on dinosaur parks, and on what he's been reading and watching. Kontinental '25 will be released theatrically in North America by 1-2 Special. Please support the production of this podcast by signing up at: rapold.substack.com Photo by Steve Snodgrass
