Ep. 311: Radu Jude on his film Kontinental '25, reflecting the world today, and going back to basics Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. It's not every day that I feature the same filmmaker twice in two years on the podcast, but we'll make a delightful exception for Radu Jude, director of Kontinental '25. I spoke with Jude about Kontinental '25 at the Berlin Film Festival, where his film won a Silver Bear, and where Jude previously won the Golden Bear for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn. Kontinental '25 follows a bailiff (an outstanding Eszter Tompa) who faces a personal reckoning after she evicts a man. True to the director of the rambunctious Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, our conversation features his thoughtful reflections on living in the world today, on filmmaking technique, on dinosaur parks, and on what he's been reading and watching. Kontinental '25 will be released theatrically in North America by 1-2 Special. Please support the production of this podcast by signing up at: rapold.substack.com Photo by Steve Snodgrass

As we are about to begin an exciting new year of cinema in 2025, we say goodbye to 2024 with our AW team's favorite films of the year. Instead of having everyone on one call together, the show is split up into six sections, each section covering the six films the team loved the most. In each segment, each person talks about why they selected the film as their favorite of the year, as well as an in-depth discussion over the film. At the end, the team gave honorable mentions for other films that they loved that included Challengers, Queer, Juror #2, Maria, Hit Man, Babygirl, Hundreds of Beavers, Hard Truths, Anora, Trap, Dahomey, The Substance, and many more. The new CIVIL WAR is the latest in a line of speculative scenarios that Alex Garland has pondered over the course of his career as a novelist-turned-filmmaker, but its journey through a country transformed by violent catastrophe is most reminiscent of his first project as a screenwriter, Danny Boyle's zombie-adjacent horror film 28 DAYS LATER. So before digging into Garland's vision of an apocalyptic near-future United States, we're revisiting his vision of the apocalyptic England of 2002 to consider the challenges of carving an ending (happy or otherwise) out of such a grim “what if,” and how our collective understanding of zombies (fast or otherwise) is both reflected in and shaped by 28 DAYS LATER's infected. And in Feedback, we reckon with another speculative scenario, one in which our recent episode on Radu Jude's latest was part of a different pairing.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about 28 DAYS LATER, CIVIL WAR,  or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. What does a powerless gofer in 2020s Romania have in common with a powerful studio executive in 1990s Hollywood? Radu Jude's new DO NOT EXPECT TO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD may concern a very different type of moviemaking than that in Robert Altman's satire THE PLAYER, but it takes a similarly cynical — and humorous — stance on the compromises involved in commercialized art. That's the main connection that inspired returning guest Katie Rife to suggest this pairing to us, but there's much more about Jude's film to get into first, from its focus on quotidian details to its various nods to Romanian art and culture. After that, we dive into these two films' complementary takes on capitalism, commodification, and cameos, and in Your Next Picture show offer a trio of otherwise-unrelated films with ties to this pairing.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE PLAYER, DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD,  or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Romanian director Radu Jude's new DO NOT EXPECT TO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD is set in Bucharest, not Hollywood, but its cynicism about the act of capturing something on film nonetheless put us in mind of Robert Altman's 1992 industry satire THE PLAYER. And we stay on theme moving into Feedback, bringing the film's cynical outlook on Hollywood to a listener's question about the very existence of movie remakes. Ep. 234: Radu Jude on Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week I present a chat with Radu Jude, the director of what's already the most acclaimed movie of the year: Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World. The wild, funny, multi-layered movie follows a young production assistant, Angela (the incredible Ilinca Manolache), on her endless days working in Bucharest, Romania. Jude creates a crazy quilt that captures what it's like to get through the world today, folding in Angela's hilariously foulmouthed Instagram videos and weaving in clips from a Communist-era 1981 film about a female taxi driver. Nina Hoss and Uwe Boll also have memorable roles. I first saw Jude's continually surprising film at its world premiere in the Locarno Film Festival, and we spoke on the eve of its U.S. release on March 22. Porque, ¿cómo se puede opinar sobre el pasado, si no hay consenso sobre lo que ocurrió entonces?

"Under Capricorn" is a true oddity: an old-fashioned Gothic melodrama which experiments with long takes; a movie set in Australia but visibly shot in a studio; a financial failure that is claimed by some to be one of the master's greatest works. Join us as we explore the film with our special guest Andrei Gorzo - one of Romania's most brilliant film critics and scholars, and a professor at the University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest. 2022 marks the birth centenary of the great filmmaker, writer, and intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini. To celebrate his legacy, Fireflies Press has published a new book, Pier Paolo Pasolini: Writing on Burning Paper, featuring reflections from Mike Leigh, Helena Wittman, Alexandre Koberidze, Jia Zhangke, Angela Schanelec, and many other filmmakers on the powerful influence the auteur continues to exert on contemporary cinema. To discuss the book and reflect on Pasolini's life and work, Film Comment's Devika Girish and Clinton Krute sat down with Giovanni Marchini Camia, co-publisher of Fireflies Press, and filmmaker Radu Jude, one of the contributors to Writing on Burning Paper. Among other great insights, Giovanni reveals how the title of the book—and in fact, the name “Fireflies Press” itself—was inspired by Pasolini's writings, and Radu recalls his first encounters with Pasolini's work at the Romanian Cinematheque in Bucharest in the early '90s.
