I chatted with Hetty Appleton-Miles Stylist at Burberry who moved to London from Australia 7 years ago. Hetty's main job as Stylist for the British brand is styling the looks for the Burberry website and some digital campaigns: from developing the concept with her director to styling up to overseeing the looks on set. Like any other person working in fashion, also her working days are never the same. From this chat, you'll hear how she got started in the industry and you'll be surprised to learn that she started with no formal university education. Although in the podcast she says that educating yourself outside of a traditional degree is fundamental. indeed she took several online courses to understand more about fashion. I asked her about her tips for becoming a good stylist and if this is a career you want to pursue, you will be motivated to know that she believes that styling is a skill that you can practice through work experience and that you can acquire even if right now maybe you believe you might not have it. We also chatted about her recent work trip to Paris, her favorite shows of the season as well as how she separates her personal style from her styling work. he key to layering in a way that is stylish as well as practical is to think about balance. Long with short, flowy with fitted, textured with smooth. Creating balanced elements keeps outfits flattering as well as visually interesting. Here, how to build a layered look from the ground up. Start With a Base Layer: Most layered looks include a couple of simple, streamlined pieces that form the foundation for the whole look, and gives the eye a place to rest. Whether these include the classic white button-down, a long (or short) sleeve layering tee, or a simple pair of neutral pants, these pieces serve as the springboard for a look that is practical and chic. Add A Completer: After the base layer is complete, the next piece to consider is the completer piece. Completer pieces can be casual, like denim jackets or cozy cardigans, or a bit more trendy, like a slouchy blazer or moto jacket. Add A Middle Layer: Between the base and the completer is where the true magic of layering happens, and much of this will depend on practical considerations as well as style preferences. A currently trendy and versatile middle layer is a sweater vest, which layers well over a base layer and under a jacket. But a middle layer can be a more fitted cardigan, a sweater, a button-down shirt or flannel, or a silk blouse. If your base layer was fitted, your middle layer can have a little more volume. I get asked often what skills you need to work in fashion. There isn't just one answer here because skills change with each position and company. However there is one that is common among 90% of the fashion jobs: Microsoft Excel.Wait, what? Why? When we think about the fashion industry we see fashion shows, clothes, shoes, magazines… So it's hard to envision fashion workers doing anything that doesn't include designing clothes, styling looks, and attending appointments, and fashion events.. you are unlikely to imagine them seated at their desks just like any other employee from any other industry. But the reality is that those who work in fashion spend a lot of, the majority of their time actually, on a laptop answering emails and planning and making analyses on Excel sheets. So if you had no idea that MS Excel is such an important skill in fashion and why then tune in as you'll learn precious insights that will boost your job search and career in this industryExcel for fashion online course , join the waitlist here https://glamobserver.com/excel-for-fashion-course

This week, a conversation with iconic designer Norma Kamali. Recorded over Zoom from her office in Manhattan, we cover her 50-year career, from graduating from FIT with a degree in illustration to working for Northwest Airlines—which allowed her to fly to London on the weekends for only $29. It felt like a time capsule to hear her talk about the cultural revolution in London in the 1960s and how she would bring back pieces for friends, which led her to start a store, and eventually design her own pieces. Soon her designs were worn by Bianca Jagger, Bette Midler, and Cher. But at 29 Norma left her marriage, which meant walking away from the brand she'd quietly built with only $98 in her pocket. But starting over ultimately led her to create a brand with longevity and panache. From her unique sleeping bag coat design (worn by the doormen at Studio 54 and by those standing outside hoping it would increase their chances of getting in) to the now-iconic red swimsuit Farrah Fawcett wore on that famous poster, Norma has dressed generations. She's full of wisdom and perspective and gently gives me advice on everything from aging, to dating (she fell in love again ten years ago at 65), to how she views busyness—she says “the more you do, the more you can do.” We get into her thoughts on her industry's evolution and on upcoming generations. I hope I did her career and story justice in this conversation with a real icon. When it comes to working in the fashion industry you might believe that the sense of style is the most in-demand skill, but in many careers of the industry, this is not even a requirement!Want to know which is the most frequently requested skill in the fashion industry? Microsoft Excel!Yes, I was surprised too when almost a decade ago I learned during my first fashion internship at Alexander McQueen that anyone in fashion uses this tool on a daily basis AND in each role. Many who are familiar with the different careers in fashion might believe that this is a tool used mainly by the most analytical roles of the industry such as buyers or merchandisers, but ANYONE including stylists, designers, PR specialists... use Excel. Hint. this is not just a tool used to analyze numbers. And it's not just used by seniors but interns as well!Tune in and listen to this short but useful episode to learn how people in fashion use Excel and why you need to learn it if you want to work in fashion this year. The brand new Excel for Fashion Online course is coming! Have you ever felt not enough and intimidated to apply for a job in fashion? This episode is for you.If you've been following me for a while now you probably have heard me say many times "You are enough to work in the fashion industry", it doesn't matter if you don't have experience already, you didn't study fashion or you don't have connections already. You can be part of the fashion industry. I talk about this so much almost everyday that I even published a book on this and actually the first draft title was you are enough but then we opted for Your fashion (dream) plan. In my book I do talk about self-confidence as the only real skill you need to get a job in fashion because once you master this, you can achieve anything else you lack and everything you want. But since you've heard me saying so many times things such as you are enough, feel the fear and send those emails anyway, I wanted to bring you a story and the experience of someone else that I'm sure will inspire you. In this episode, I chat with Jennifer Savin features editor at cosmopolitan. She would not be in this position today if years ago she listened to the voices in her head that said you are not enough, it's too competitive you can't make it, so don't apply for that job. Luckily a friend of hers pushed her to apply for that internship at Cosmopolitan, and despite she didn't believe in herself, she did it and got the job and has never left since then.We hope that this episode will be your friend that pushes you to apply and send emails despite you might feel a bit intimidated and scared.By listening to this episode You'll learn:how to overcome the fear of not being enough and believing more in yourself to get what you want. We don't cover lack of self-confidence only during your job search but we do also talk about what you should expect from your first week at the office when you feel so scared, comparing yourself to other people from the industry on Instagram, imposter syndrome, and putting yourself out there if you are an aspiring journalist and you might not feel confident about pitching your ideas and articles.
