Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: In honor of International Happiness Day, join me as I sit down with Rev. Jessica Van Roekel to explore what it really means to count it all joy. As we reflect on personal experiences and biblical examples, we’ll highlight the distinction between circumstantial happiness and the deep, steadfast joy that comes from trusting God through trials. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how joy can be a deliberate response to life’s challenges, cultivating faith and steadfastness. Whether you’re navigating hardship or seeking a renewed perspective, this conversation offers hope and encouragement to find joy in every circumstance. International Day of Happiness aims to make people around the world realize the importance of happiness within their lives. This day encourages people to spread happiness through a small action. But what happens when actions don’t cut it, and the feeling of happiness lasts mere seconds? What do we do when the idea of happiness seems far off and impossible? Quotables from the episode: I liken joy and happiness, the difference between that is that a river usually has a source. And A river can get filled up with mud and leaves and twigs and even beavers come along and build dams and so further on down the little stream, it's just dried up, rocky, dry bed. But if you follow that stream, you eventually come to the source and the source is where it just bubbles out. And that's how I liken happiness and joy is that joy is the source. My relationship with the Lord is my source of really life. It's my source of source of strength. It's my source of everything. The breath that I breathe comes from God and that is my joy. So, I can have these circumstances like postpartum where it felt like continue on with the analogy that streambed dried up. It's like the depression built this dam between the feelings of happiness and yet that joy, the source was still bubbling and still there. From a neuroscience perspective, happiness and joy engage the brain in distinct but overlapping ways. Both emotions activate reward systems in the brain, but their triggers, durations, and neural pathways differ significantly. Happiness is often a fleeting emotional state triggered by external stimuli or achievements, like eating a favorite meal, receiving a compliment, or reaching a goal. The brain's happiness response is typically short-lived, subsiding once the rewarding experience ends or the novelty wears off. Joy is a deeper, more enduring emotional state that often arises from intrinsic sources, such as gratitude, faith, or connection with others. Unlike happiness, it does not rely solely on external circumstances. Joy is more sustainable than happiness because it is less tied to transient external factors and more rooted in internal states like faith, gratitude, and meaningful relationships. Happiness primarily relies on external stimuli and rewards, triggering immediate but temporary dopamine release Joy emerges from internal processes and deeper reflections, engaging serotonin pathways and regions involved in emotional and existential meaning. Happiness is short-term, as the brain’s reward circuitry adapts quickly to pleasurable stimuli (a phenomenon called hedonic adaptation). Joy is longer-lasting, supported by neural circuits linked to emotional regulation, contentment, and resilience. Happiness can be disrupted by stress, as the brain's focus shifts to managing perceived threats. Joy can coexist with stress, as it often stems from a sense of purpose or faith that provides emotional resilience during trials. Happiness happens to us while joy happens within us—fruit of the Spirit, a choice, endures hardships/sufferings. Happiness is a reaction but joy is a practice and a behavior, deliberate and intentional. In the Bible, happiness appears less than 30 times but joy appears hundreds of times. Counting it all joy when we face trials means we: experience God’s strength, feel the power of faith, hang on God’s powerful arm, and witness God’s work. When we “count it all joy” God proves himself faithful to produce steadfastness in our hearts. Scripture References: James 1:2-4, ESV “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And Let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” Esther 8:16, NIV “For the Jews it was a time of happiness and joy, gladness and honor.” Proverbs 23:25, NLT “So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.” Psalm 92:4, NET “For you, O Lord, have made me happy by your work. I will sing for joy because of what you have done.” Isaiah 52:7, ESV and NASB “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” Psalm 32:1-2 NLT “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the LORD has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty! 2 Corinthians 12:10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. There are things I believe in very strongly when it comes to managing clients: We have to establish and maintain trust. We have to actively listen and confirm what we heard. We need to make sure bad news travels at the same speed as good news. But should we focus on client happiness? I think it can lead to some big problems, honestly. But happy clients bring huge benefits. And since International Happiness Day is just around the corner, let's dig into this! It's all in the email newsletter too: https://us4.campaign-archive.com/?u=3c7b14630509cce52d23ffec0&id=e29a8d7ff9

Title: Happiness: what is it to you? Synopsis: In this episode of Pathway to Peace, the presenters take a look at what happiness means to people, given that March 20th is marked as International Happiness Day by the United Nations. Despite the rate of innovations in technology, allegedly freeing up our time to spend on things 'we want to do', people in society are ever more showing signs of unease, unhappiness and depression. Why is this the case and what techniques does Islam have to offer are just some of the questions that will be explored in the programme. Presenters: Nasir Sajjad & Asif Ashraf

Who’s up for some daydreaming? In these chaotic times, you might say …I’m too busy ➨ really mean “not a priority.” Make self-care a priority. Feed your soul and keep your mind healthy.Isn’t that frivolous ➨ Coping mechanisms are not frivolous. Self-care is not frivolous, it’s absolutely critical.A rebel doesn’t daydream ➨ I’m confined in my home. Physically constrained, so my mind is off and wandering. Daydreaming gives me mental freedom I don’t physically have right now.Creating a ritual to daydream helps overcome:1. Fear2. Uncertainty3. Monotony4. LonelinessToolbox, especially for chaotic times:1. Daydreaming2. Meditating5. Relaxing in the bathtub (or on a hammock)6. Reading7. Conversing8. Exercising9. Hobbies – new and oldLook at your toolbox and incorporate into your daily schedule. Create a positive mindset. This includes daydreaming. We all daydream differently. Mine usually involve travel because it is central to relaxing me and bringing me joy.I was sad to realize I forgot about the International Happiness Day, when the happiest country report is published. I'm so excited to announce the first ever Women's Global Happiness Day, which I'm launching on October 18, 2018! This has been a dream of mine for some time, and we're now holding events in over 80 cities on six continents! There's already an International Happiness Day, but we need Women's Global Happiness Day because there are a number of specific reasons for women's unhappiness and lack of thriving that are different from that of men. And so I created this international event to address some of the issues that face women in particular, for women to come together to announce that they are worthy of happiness and that their happiness is within their control, and to provide them with actionable tools that they can put into practice to start increasing their own happiness. If you would like to participate, you have a few options. You can sign up to attend an event hosted by someone else, and if there is one in your area we'll match you up with the host. You can sign up to host an event, and we provide you with all the info and curriculum that you'll need. For more info on these two options, go to the Participate page at [www.womenshappy.com]. Or, you can join an online event that I will be leading! For more information about this, go to the Free Webinar page at [www.womenshappy.com]. The free webinar that I'll be leading will be Thursday, October 18, at 7:00 pm ET (that's New York time). It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to iTunes and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! And please spread the word and help our community grow! Thank you so much spending your time with me! And if you aren't following me already, you can find me on Instagram and Facebook, and click here to receive my newsletter. May you live purposefully, may you love yourself, and may you love life. Bye for now!
Only 1 in 5 five people step away from their desk for lunch. Today’s guest is on a mission to change that. Laura Archer is the author of Gone for Lunch: 52 Things to do on Your Lunch Break, a book she wrote on her journey to reclaim her midday break and to find more time for herself, her interests and her self-care. Through her book, blog and workshops, Laura aims to help individuals and companies to appreciate the unbelievable benefits of taking a lunch break - even if it’s only for 20 minutes once or twice a week. Have you been called a "difficult" woman? This week Pia Miller, Home and Away actress was in Elle magazine, described as exhibiting a “zealous level of control”. Is the criticism justified? Or is a bossy woman inevitably a bitch? Also, is wolf whistling the worst, the three million dollar wedding that ended up in court, and why International Happiness Day is a crock. Plus, if you hate your body, and you aren’t convinced by the “body positivity movement” it’s time to embrace "body neutrality". And a listener in an open plan office is on the brink of insanity, what should she do? Happy International Happiness Day or 25 Bad Apples does spoil the bunch Another journal entry in an ongoing series of sometime comedic reflections of life as recorded by Jan Landy for Jan Landy on 03/22/2016 while driving in my car from where I am to where I am going or wherever I happen to be when inspiration hits me to record another podcast. These are my thoughts that I am documenting for myself so that if I ever find the time in the future to go back into the past to remember what I was thinking at the time, I will be able to listen to them. This constantly changing podcast usually short and to the point produced and recorded by Jan Landy presents Jan Landy's thoughts and ramblings at the time of the recording. Ever changing, humorous, thought provoking, inspiring and sometimes informative. It is a mixture of comedy, positive thoughts and, on rare occasions will offer information on where SoundBroker.com has been and where it is going. If you like to laugh, stay motivated and keep abreast of the latest adventures of Jan Landy and SoundBroker.com, this podcast is worth a listen.
Filmmaker Adam Shell discusses Pursuing Happiness, his inspiring new documentary. What is the secret to actually finding happiness? The film follows Shell and producer Nicholas Kraft across the country where they talk to remarkable people who radiate genuine happiness. Every story shows a different struggle and a different triumph as artists, public servants, parents, and dreamers show the world what makes them happy – and how that happiness has a remarkable impact on the people and their communities. Featuring testimony from experts in the field of mindfulness, psychology, art, sociology, religion, and cultural studies, Pursuing Happiness brought Shell into contact with the worldwide happiness movement. After successful screenings at several film festivals (which lead to an appearance for Shell at the United Nations and on The Today Show), the film is scheduled to open in select theatres on March 20, designated as International Happiness Day, and will be released on demand and streaming services throughout 2016. Shell and Kraft also worked together on two previous documentaries, Put the Camera on Me and Finding Kraftland.
Are you happy and what makes you happy? It's a serious question and one that documentarian asked people all over the USA for his new film 'Pursuing Happiness.' Shell spoke on the arduous process it took to finding and interviewing over 400 people, editing together a cohesive documentary film, and answers the question: are you happy? 'Pursuing Happiness' will be out on March 20th, International Happiness Day.
