We talk about the Holacracy management system, why your website needs frequent testing and monitoring, and how to analyze the traffic coming to your website. --- Create a Holacracy to Empower Your People with Dennis Van Der Heijden Our guest is Dennis Van Der Heijden, the founder and CEO and head of global happiness at Convert.com. Convert helps you test all your ideas, whether you're a marketer looking for advanced targeting and rich reports or a conversion rate optimization CRO expert looking for a robust platform. Welcome to the show, Dennis. Thank you, Steve. Happy to be here. Happy New Year. Well, we are well into the new year. I'm not happy to be here, I'm sorry. All right. I think the only reason I heard it this way because I had a friend when I was a child and he kept wishing Happy New Year in August whenever we met. It was his birthday. And I thought, well, maybe he's not alone, but he is. He's really the only one. All right. Well, glad to have you here. And I'm very curious about your story. How did you start Convert? How does one launch a software company? How does that even work? I think the best launches, I think, are similar to how I started, frustration and urgent need. So I was running a software business, generating software leads for software companies, had a lead generation site, and then there was a small crisis in 2008, people might remember vividly, and that kind of dried up all my leads at that time. Investments were pretty much on hold for most people for the first six months of that, or the last six months of that year. I just moved to Mexico with my little baby and the site couldn't fail, it was my only income, and I didn't look forward to picking up Spanish as fast as that and work for somebody else. So the only thing I could imagine is like, well, if I have half the traffic, I need double the lead. So I don't know how that's called, but I just need to do a better job with what I have. And we build a plugin for WordPress and that worked. We've really personalized every page on the site depending on the keywords that people use at that time. Now it's called personalization. That was 12 years ago. And the person that built that plugin for $50 eventually became nearly a 50% shareholder of my company, a CTO. So if I have a website and it starts converting, then I just download your software and it starts converting? How does that? Software doesn't really do anything. So garbage in, garbage out in that sense. What it does is just to give a very simple idea of what people use it for. If you're a DHL and you're curious if that man on your homepage should be a woman, fitting the culture where you're now launching, you might want to change that and see if that's true for that particular country. And so, you use our software or something similar, you change that image inside our tool which launches on top of your site without people knowing, and then you measure both images at the same time and we'll tell you which one is the better one to pick. So, that's the idea comes from the customer and the tool does it, the math to do the statistics, and then the results. And you can take that learning to the next question that you have in your business. So, it's basically, that's what you call A-B testing. You have two options and whichever works best, you keep that and then you look for another test and you keep testing. So, a typical site owner, how many A/B tests do they have to run to get an efficient site? I know that's a very general question, but magnitude-wise, is it like 20 tests, is it2,000 tests? What is it? Just to have an idea, at this moment today, when you're listening to this, Amazon is running 1,000 tests that day. Just to get an idea of the scale. Booking.com, similar. Etsy, similar.

According to the world happiness report The United States ranks 16th as happiest country worldwide-globally Just behind Ireland, Germany, and Canada And sitting in first place-take a guess?  nope! its Finland. Crazy right!? Who knew Want to know whos in last place? Well get back to that.  Honestly just by doing the research and data analysis for this podcast, its generated enough motivation, happiness,, and gratitude for the rest of the year! Because I know what no freedom looks like, Ive seen it, Ive experienced it, and Ive fought for it. Fighting for freedom, happiness, gratitude or your personal goals all require a strong mindset and self awareness. One of the factors that stood out to me when measuring a country's happiness index was, they look for life expectancy, gdp, social support, but this one really stood out to me.  It was The freedom to make life choices.- they measure that The freedom to make life choices- freely!  Then I was like oh ok, that must mean afghanistan must be in last place. It was close, but zimbabwe sits in last place for happiness. As of 2021. $253 a month. And only 30% of the population works.  First thing that came to my mind was, damn. I know how bad afghanistan is, I know how bad peru is, but I couldn't imagine how bad zimbabwe is right now. I always say this, “it could always be worse” and its true, life is perception. Change the way you think and it'll change daily in a positive manner.

Joan shares insights from her book including: time affluence and how to use it for caregiver self-care; how to bookend your day with happiness, the Matthew Effect, how to avoid the social media scorecard and how happiness is about what we manufacture not about what we acquire. 2. "If you can measure it, you can manage it. I used to say that for years. And  now I say if you can measure it, you can better understand it. If you can better understand it, you can make better decisions." Matt Phelan.    Matt Phelan, co-founder of the Happiness Index, and I talk about how The Happiness Index provides organisations with an index of people's emotions. Emotions are data points that give you a better understanding of how your people feel so you can make better decisions. Matt says they are providing people with data to achieve emotional intelligence (EQ) at scale. We talk about how emotional data is four dimensional (4-D) and Matt takes me through an example of this using the interview process. Matt shares some of the evidence to support the business case for happiness at work. We chat about employee engagement, how happiness is associated with energy, that relationships are the number one driver of happiness at work and the impact of discrimination in the workplace. We also cover biases, belief systems, ignorance and incompetence as well as Matt's book 'Freedom to be Human'.    Matthew Phelan is a co-founder and the Head of Global Happiness at The Happiness Index. He is on a mission to improve the way organisations treat people. He co-founded a global data and digital marketing agency before leaving the business after a trade sale and focussing entirely on The Happiness Index. Happiness & Horse Business - Why all businesses should Prioritise Happiness. We all want to be happy.... but despite the pursuit of happiness so many of us find ourselves falling short or thinking it's unachievable. We have removed emotions from work and business. Choosing to push through, stay silent or think we aren't allowed to be happy in our jobs! And for many of us entrepreneurs we often start our business with the desire that we want our life to be more fulfilled (or at least I did)! In this episode, I talk with Matt Phelan, co-founder of the happiness index. Who as Head of Global Happiness, entrepreneur, marketer, Matt who grew up on a farm and understands the challenges of entrepreneurs, corporate business and also rural business! Having collated, studied and researched the data behind what makes people happy and whether it matters in business, Matt took what was his philosophy and is on a mission to improve business for all. In his new book “Freedom to be Happy” Matt brings together philosophers, scientists and practitioners to make a business case for happiness and why it makes good business sense. In the Equine Industry, it's hard! Physically, mentally and emotionally and while we are often great at reading what our horses are telling us, but humans???? Well we are great at masking it, sweeping how we feel away and ignoring it! It's time to stop! It matters, If we are happier, we will run better businesses, our clients will be happier, if we focus on staff happiness our horses will be better looked after! It's not just a philosophy! The Data backs it up! Things were not going well for Neil Pasricha (@NeilPasricha). He came home from work one day, and his wife told him she no longer loved him. Around that same time, Neil's best friend committed suicide. Neil needed something to lift his spirits. Something to remind him, every day, that there was something good in the world. That’s when Neil started his blog, 1,000 Awesome Things. At the end of each day, he wrote about one little awesome thing from life. Today, Neil has written several awesome books, including The Book of Awesome and Awesome is Everywhere. His blog, 1,000 Awesome Things was named Best Blog in the World two years in a row from International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, Neil is the Director of The Institute of Global Happiness, and he has a fantastic podcast called 3 Books, on which he’s interviewed titans such as Judy Blume, Malcolm Gladwell, and David Sedaris. Neil’s new book is You Are Awesome, and it’s all about resilience. In this conversation, you’ll learn: Neil says "You never know when you're making art, who in your own personal life is going to resonate with it.” What surprised Neil about the difference between running a blog, and a podcast. Neil also says "no one should be embarrassed of any book ever.” What is “book shame,” and why does Neil feel it should be wiped off the face of the planet. Neil also says "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” (And he admits he stole that from Game of Thrones). Hear the fascinating science behind how reading cultivates emotional intelligence. Listener Showcase June designs patterns for really cool crocheted figurines. I’ve seen them. Mike Wood welcomes 7-time author and speaker Neil Pasricha to the WorkHuman Radio Podcast this week. Neil runs the Institute for Global Happiness and in his latest book, You Are Awesome, he shares practical tips for building resilience and bringing positivity back to work and life. A Happy Experiment Neil relates how a failing marriage and a friend in crisis inspired him to create a blog to cheer himself up. He started 1000AwesomeThings.com where he posted one positive thing every day. His blog became a viral hit and won him the Best Blog In The World award. This led to him writing his first book and his first TED Talk. Mike comments that his little daily dose of positivity set his entire career. Neil agrees and explains that his blog experiment became his connective tissue and social circle. You Can’t Win Anxiety, depression and suicide rates are spiking, Neil points out. We’re more connected than ever before, yet we’re lonelier. We should be happy yet we feel worse than ever! This is confusing since we live in the best time ever to be alive. Neil believes that resilience is the muscle we all need to build today. Mike says that as technology has advanced making us more connected, we’re more reminded of what we don’t have. We’re not just keeping up with the neighbors anymore, we’re trying to keep up with everybody, and that’s a fight we can never win. Neil adds that this sense of endless failure contributes to driving up our anxiety. Bringing Positivity Back to Work What can we do to bring positivity back to work, Mike asks. Neil replies that we spend most of our time at work, but we’re the least happy there. Our employees want to be engaged in meaningful work that challenges them and that they’re passionate about. The problem is that we’re drained of energy: we have a low resilience mindset and we stimulate ourselves with caffeine to get through the day. The solution is simple, Neil says. Simple daily activities, like taking a walk, keeping a gratitude journal, or doing a random act of kindness, can drive a positive mindset. He invites leaders to take his free 20 for 20 Challenge with their teams. You will create a happiness habit that will not only impact your team, but will yield positive business results.  Resources GlobalHappiness.org Neil.blog

If you are a new leader, I will tell you, be yourself. Be your best self. Bring your excitement. Bring your enthusiasm. Love your job. Make sure you know what you're doing. Tell everyone what you're doing, and everything will sort itself out. – Neil Pasricha   Hi everyone! In today's episode, we talk about how to get back up when life knocks you down. This is the episode where we learn practical strategies about failure. We often talk about success, about over-achievement, disruption, innovation, but we rarely talk enough about when life really kicks us in the gut and how to get back up and keep moving.   Our amazing guest today is Neil Pasricha. Neil is a New York Times Best-Selling Author of The Happiness Equation, The Book of Awesome, and he's got a new book coming out called Back to Awesome, where he talks all about failure – what do we do with it, how do we become more resilient to move forward in our lives.   Neil is currently the director of the Institute of Global Happiness. He has a popular TED talk with over 3 million views. He has an amazing podcast called 3 Books with Neil Pasricha, which won an award as one of Apple's Best of 2018 Podcasts.   Neil is an all-around great guy, a down-to-earth human, and I'm really excited for all of you to listen in.         A Benign Envy You, as the leader, have to be the most excited person in the room. People can only match your level of vision, your level of enthusiasm, your level of commitment. Whatever you show them that you are willing to do, that is setting a high bar that people can aspire to and it creates inside them a benign envy. There's two kinds of envy. One is called malicious envy – that's the negative envy, something like jealousy. The other is called benign envy, which is actually something that we all want. It means that you're surrounded by someone you consider a role model, and it improves your own behavior and your own drive. Find your small pond One of the things I do whenever I'm going through failure or through a loss is I find small ponds. What does that mean? When I was at Harvard Business School, I was lucky enough to have lunch with the dean one day, the retired dean of HBS. He was like, “How's school going?” I'm like, “Bad. I'm stressed, school's really hard, I'm up late every night studying, and all the big, fancy companies are coming to campus… Not only are we supposed to do homework every night, but we're also supposed to have beer with people we don't know and apply for these jobs that we probably won't get…” You know what the dean said to me? He's like, “Oh man, that's terrible. Well why don't you just leave the beach?” “What beach? What are you talking about?” “Well right now you're standing on the edge of the beach, like there's a fence. If you look inside the beach, there's like 10 bathing beauties, but there's a thousand people like you outside the fence. The odds of you landing one…are super small.” “So what am I supposed to do?” “Leave the beach. Go find the broken companies, the bankrupt companies, the companies going through a hard time…If you can call them up, if you can work your way inside, if you can take a lower level position, then you will get unbelievable opportunities, because you'll be working something in there. You will be given a lot of responsibility, promoted, taken seriously in meetings, and they will want to hear from you and your learning will vastly accelerate.” So I did that. Neil's Advice “Don't take advice.” That would be my advice. Often when we're asking for advice, we're really looking for an alibi. We're looking to confirm something we already have inside ourselves. That's why some resonate, some do not. When it's resonating with you, it's something you already believe. The people you're asking are telling you the thing you want them to tell you, because you have something inside yourself. You can look at the most common advice of all – it all contradicts. ”Actions speak louder the words” OR “The pen is mightier than the sword” – which one is it? Is it “The early bird catches the worm,” or is it “good things come to those who wait”? Which one is it? You can't find objectively true advice that applies in any case. I'm so excited to announce the first ever Women's Global Happiness Day, which I'm launching on October 18, 2018! This has been a dream of mine for some time, and we're now holding events in over 80 cities on six continents! There's already an International Happiness Day, but we need Women's Global Happiness Day because there are a number of specific reasons for women's unhappiness and lack of thriving that are different from that of men. And so I created this international event to address some of the issues that face women in particular, for women to come together to announce that they are worthy of happiness and that their happiness is within their control, and to provide them with actionable tools that they can put into practice to start increasing their own happiness. If you would like to participate, you have a few options. You can sign up to attend an event hosted by someone else, and if there is one in your area we'll match you up with the host. You can sign up to host an event, and we provide you with all the info and curriculum that you'll need. For more info on these two options, go to the Participate page at [www.womenshappy.com]. Or, you can join an online event that I will be leading! For more information about this, go to the Free Webinar page at [www.womenshappy.com]. The free webinar that I'll be leading will be Thursday, October 18, at 7:00 pm ET (that's New York time). It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to iTunes and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! And please spread the word and help our community grow! Thank you so much spending your time with me! And if you aren't following me already, you can find me on Instagram and Facebook, and click here to receive my newsletter. May you live purposefully, may you love yourself, and may you love life. Bye for now!

Happiness may be an inalienable right, but there are 565 MILLION web pages, and 175,000 products on Amazon helping people find it, giving a not-so-subtle impression that something is missing.  Our increasing problems with depression and substance abuse reinforce that impression.  Gretchen Martens is a woman of many talents – anthropologist, coach, educator and even improve comedy performer, as well as entrepreneur and business developer -  who is taking a new approach to this whole problem – at least for America.   She has recently returned from a trip to Bhutan, Epicenter of the Global Happiness Movement, where she went to find some new skills and approaches that can help turn this tidal wave of unhappiness around.  Bhutan is a tiny country with huge ideas, but as the Dahli Lama has said, 'If you think you are too small to make a difference, try spending the night with a mosquito”. She spent 2 weeks traveling the country, observing and learning.  She looked to see if they truly did seem happier - and they did - and then started looking into how they did this.  Although she has spent a lot of time in her career teaching people to be happier, she did indeed come back with new skills and is eager to share them and hopefully spread more happiness in this country - something that seems sorely needed given all the recent episodes of blatant hostility we have seenin our own citizens.   It doesn't have to be that way!!!   In addition to her speaking and her forthcoming books, she has applied her diverse talents to some things she offers freely to the public – like her daily happiness messages and items on her facebook page, and you will learn how to access them while listening to this program, so keep a pen and paper handy for that and any other notes you may want to take about new approaches to a happier life.
