We often underestimate the importance of sleep and how “horror sleep” can negatively affect all aspects of our lives. One of the major hindrances to good sleep is airway complications, but maxillomandibular advancement surgical interventions may be the answer. To help us in our exploration of the impact of airway deficiency on temporomandibular disorders (TMD), we are joined today by the jaw and airway expert, Dr. Christian Andy Loetscher, DDS, MS. In this episode, Dr. Andy explains how a compromised airway leads to TMD complications, with technical examples of the exact causes of TMD. He also describes how regular deep sleep can eradicate most problems, how premolar removals help, and the best practices for TMD treatments. You'll learn about assessing and preparing patients for maxillomandibular advancement surgery, Dr. Andy's process for these surgeries, and receive some helpful resources on the value and power of good sleep, plus a whole lot more! Tune in today.Key Points From This Episode:The relationship between airways and TMD. How a compromised airway causes TMD issues. The importance of deep sleep.  Best practices for TMD treatments. Getting technical about the exact causes of TMD. How premolar removal works as an effective treatment. His maxillomandibular advancement surgery process post-diagnosis. Examples of some of his more complicated cases. The relapses he sees in his patients and his outcomes regarding nerve issues. Some helpful resources on sleeping.   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Dr. Christian Andy Loetscher on LinkedIn — linkedin.com/in/atlantaoralsurgery  Dr. Christian Andy Loetscher on X — twitter.com/OralSurgeryATL Dr. Christian Andy Loetscher Email —  jawimplant@aol.com  Atlanta Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implant Center — jawimplant.com ‘Sleep Prosthodontics: A New Vision for Dentistry' — id.cdeworld.com/courses/4684-sleep-prosthodontics-a-new-vision-for-dentistry ‘The Sleeping Brain: Harnessing the Power of the Glymphatic System through Lifestyle Choices' — mdpi.com/2076-3425/10/11/868  Why We Sleep — amazon.com/Why-We-Sleep-Unlocking-Dreams/dp/1501144316 The Matt Walker Podcast — sleepdiplomat.com/podcast  ‘Dr. Matt Walker: The Science & Practice of Perfecting Your Sleep' — youtu.be/gbQFSMayJxk   Dr. Jeffrey S. Lack of sleep can affect multiple facets in both our physical and mental health. Studies have linked sleep deprivation to weight gain, chemical imbalances, thinking of food as a reward, and slower mental processes. It has been proven over and over that getting better rest is integral to lowering stress and increasing our ability to function in optimum health. But how do we actually achieve better sleep? Having struggled to get adequate sleep myself, this topic touches me personally. I've researched and worked to improve my own rest, and learned a lot of information, tips and ideas revolving around sleep. In this episode, I share them with you, including several physiological factors. I discuss ideas and tips for changing our thought processes around rest, correcting mistakes we might be making regarding sleep, and implementing ways to increase our restorative sleep. I hope the information I share helps each of you sleep more and function better. “Without enough sleep, we tend to be more irritable and our brains just don't function as well… We make more mistakes, things take longer to do and we are just not as bright and as capable as we can be. However, even though we know all that, most of us continue not to get enough sleep.” – Dr. Sara Dill What You'll LearnSleep linked to various diseases, especially obesity Overeating and sleep deprivation Listening to your body Signs you're not getting enough sleep How to get more rest Changing how you think about sleep Mistakes we make regarding rest Ideas and tips for improving sleep Contact Info and Recommended ResourcesBook: https://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Sleep-Unlocking-Dreams/dp/1501144316 (Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams) by Matthew Walker, PhD Oura Ring:  https://ouraring.com/ (ouraring.com)  Podcast Episodes:https://www.saradill.com/blog/e26 (How to Beat Burnout) https://www.saradill.com/blog/e25 (How to Drop Your Manual) https://www.saradill.com/blog/e18 (Thought Work: The Most Important Work You Can Ever Do) https://www.saradill.com/blog/e3 (Believing New Things) Connect with Sara Dill, MD, The Doctor's CoachWebsite: https://www.saradill.com/ (saradill.com) Work with me: https://www.saradill.com/coaching (saradill.com/coaching) It's not too late to join my Physicians Only Small Coaching Group! The Factual: credibility grading of news articles/stories. 2:33 The Factual's history, its mission and ethos, its process of evaluating articles/stories, and the technology behind it. 6:25 Iona on Areo and the foundation of all good commentary—the facts. Opinion/commentary vs. news reporting. Arjun: The Factual's algorithm and AI tries to ensure that commentary is scored according to how well-grounded in fact it is. 9:00 How the technology behind The Factual works and the methodology of assigning rankings to the four different categories that The Factual rates to come up with an overall credibility score for a piece. 13:51 The conflation of credibility with popularity in science and news. The “herd mentality” in news. Plus: why The Factual's algorithm can't tell you if something is true or false, only if a piece has characteristics that mark it as credible and factual—it provides a rubric, with rules of thumb, applicable with or without the algorithm. Ultimately: no easy answers to big issues in the news. 19:59 A discussion of the adversarial nature of politics—does this give it an advantage over (mostly popular) science because everything is “subjected to a ferocious scrutiny” (Iona) by political opponents with vested interests? Pros and cons of this. Challenging popular narratives in science and politics. Adversarialism in politics and journalism. 24:49 Arjun's father and the simple, core principle of The Factual's algorithm: read multiple sources/viewpoints. Give people the tools to decide for themselves. The Factual's commenting methodology. How to cure polarisation. 29:42 The perils of internet discourse in the social media age: Facebook comments and the end of friendships and the flaws of the Twitter algorithm. An age of polarisation and bitter division, online and offline. How can The Factual help us move beyond this? 34:20 Why are people interested in the news? Why is knowing the news and reading good journalism good for people? Where did Arjun's interest in the news come from? Why reading the news should be enjoyable rather than anxiety/anger-inducing. Why news shouldn't take over your life. The Factual's business model. 41:23 Metric obsession and how The Factual is different. 45:21 Arjun's colleague Alex and the importance of double-checking and questioning the algorithm. 47:07 The erosion of free speech—big tech algorithms, social media, and censorship. How we all engage in curation and why curation is better than censorship. How best to deal with cranks and mis/disinformation—and how the tech giants get it wrong. The poisoning of discourse by cancel culture and how social media enables cancel culture. 1:00:34 Polarisation and the continual subdivision of people into smaller and smaller groups and the effects of all this on public discourse. Twitter is NOT representative of the world. Why a multiplicity of platforms is good and why we must learn how to best use them. 1:04:43 How does Arjun think news might be consumed in the future, or how does he hope it will be consumed? 1:09:09 Last words and outro.
