In today's Best of Episode, we feature Dr. Gillian Mandich. Dr. Gillian is a happiness researcher, public speaker, and the founder of The International Happiness Institute of Health Science Research. Gillian believes that happiness is a practice, not a destination, and, through her keynote speeches, workshops, and courses, she helps people become healthier and happier by encouraging them to adopt simple habits and practices that have been scientifically proven to increase happiness and produce a greater sense of fulfillment and well-being.In this episode, you'll hear from Gillian Mandich on:(00:33:33) The meaning of happiness. Gillian defines happiness as the experience of joy, contentment, and positive well-being combined with the sense that your life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile. However, she points out that happiness means different things to different people and stresses the importance of developing an awareness of what makes you happy and making an effort to do more of what you love and less of what you hate.(00:50:07) Overriding the brain's natural negativity bias. She explains that practicing gratitude is one of the most powerful ways to train your brain to focus on the positive rather than dwell on the negative. She also suggests keeping a gratitude journal and even a gratitude jar to heighten your appreciation of all the good things in your life.(01:06:21) Creating small bursts of joy. According to Gillian's research, the small moments of joy in our daily lives, rather than the big occasions such as birthdays, graduations, and vacations, bring us the most happiness. So, her tip for living a consistently happy life is to create small bursts of joy throughout the day by doing simple things, like calling a friend or going for a walk. (01:30:12) Taking control. She talks about the benefits of focusing your attention on the areas of your life over which you have control. Plus, she emphasizes the importance of accepting the fact that bad things happen and understanding that it's impossible to be happy all the time. (01:51:10) Learning to see the world through the lens of awe. Gillian describes a recent experience of awe that made her change the way she saw the world. She suggests seeking solace and inspiration in beauty and nature by taking the time to look up at the stars or gaze at a beautiful sunset.

Although grief is an extremely painful event no one in their right mind would ever choose to go through...good CAN come out of it. Grief is one of the most powerful teachers you can learn from. Learn all you can to gain the treasures grief offers! This episode is a must listen. Our host, Nkechi Nwafor-Robinson, sits down with Dr. Gillian Mandich, an award-winning, internationally recognized happiness researcher, speaker, educator, and author. With Nkechi having recently lost her dad, suddenly, the episode could not have been better timed. She engages with Dr. Gillian on the topic of happiness and grief, exploring how and where they intersect. This is a very rewarding discussion, rich with punch points, great tips, and whole lot of grace and understanding. Dr. Gillian reminds us that while suffering unimaginable grief, can be all-encompassing, sometimes it isn't the only emotion we feel. There is a range. There is a symphony at play. This is not something we should feel guilty about, but recognize that it is a personal journey for each of us and it can be a beautiful one if we allow it. “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.” Romans 5:3-4 NLT If this episode resonates with you, then remember... Dr. Mandich is a scientist on a mission to help people live their happiest life. I'm a published researcher; two-time TEDx speaker; the founder of The International Happiness Institute of Health Science Research; and you can often find me in the media on shows such as The Social, Marilyn Denis, Breakfast Television, and The Morning Show. Dr. Mandich was the lead speaker for an event that I hosted for Venture Sinai, a charity that raises funds for vital research at the Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute at Sinai Health System in Toronto, Ontario. The event took place over Zoom during the COVID pandemic in June of 2020. She was such a dynamic and engaging speaker and her talk was well researched and delivered in a way that was easily understood and useful. The feedback that we received from our members and donors was stellar. There were pearls of wisdom imparted that could be used in our everyday lives that I still follow. Dr. Mandich exudes such positive energy and is an absolute pleasure to listen and learn from. I highly recommend hiring her as a speaker for groups of any size. I will be having her speak again at another event that I am organizing. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/evinweiss/support

Today, on the best fitness podcast, I invited back Dr. Gillian Mandich, Canada's Happiness Doctor. We spoke about the sobering truth that this Pandemic has shifted the happiness quotient across the globe. And although I was hoping for an answer of how we can all improve our emotions at this time and perhaps lean towards happiness, the reality is bleak... However, Dr. Gillian speaks about how we can take simple things and support our mental health, and how creating community in times like these, is the greatest, scientifically proven way to boost your immune system. In today's episode you will learn: How staying connected with one or two people over the phone, can boost your mood and make you feel connected. How finding news from credible sources and avoiding binge watching news is important for your mental health. How self compassion and self care is really important; even if self care right now is doing nothing and watching netflix and chill How to do the 3-3-3 exercise: That this simple exercise can help mitigate anxiety and help you find gratitude when it might seem difficult right now. We could all use a little happiness right about now and in this episode we share stories and science that will help you cultivate happiness. We spend a lot of time discussing how connecting with family, and friends is an important pre determinant for happiness and how reconnecting with community, nature, and ourself we can tap into reserves of primal happiness that humans enjoyed until modern day distractions and expectations we put on ourself and others. We also discuss how having a shared sense of camaraderie and struggle increases happiness. Gillian has a white paper coming out Friday March 20th on happiness in the workplace. Enjoy the show! Combating loneliness, Why Picasso can charge infinite amounts for a painting, Finding true happiness, Sharing your message on stage, Boldly asking for what you want, Making big pivots when you’re scared, THESE ARE THEMES OF MY CONVERSATION WITH DR. GILLIAN MANDICH. Dr. Gillian Mandich has a PhD from Western University in Health Science, and her primary areas of research are happiness and health. She is the founder of The International Happiness Institute of Health Science Research; co-lead investigator of The Canadian Happiness At Work Study; is a part of the Meant2Prevent research team at SickKids; appears regularly in the media on shows such as The Social, Marilyn Denis, Breakfast Television, The Morning Show, and CBC. When I invited Dr. Gillian Mandich to come on the show, I envisioned chatting about How Entrepreneurs Can Cultivate MORE Happiness in their lives, but this conversation is that PLUS so much more. I was first introduced to Gillian when I stumbled upon her podcast 7 or 8 years ago, The Holistic Health Diaries. I was a keen listener and have been following her journey on Instagram ever since… gotta love the power of social media. Fast forward to 2020 and Gillian and I were able to sit down together and record this episode at my studio in Toronto, over coffee. This episode is a little bit lengthier so listen in 2 chunks if you must, but do not miss a beat. Gillian shares her beautiful story of building out her personal brand, getting her phD, and the many paths that she’s walked to find her place in the world today as a happiness researcher. In this episode we cover so much… How to pitch yourself to the media & land a spot on ted talk stage, even if you’ve never spoken publicly before! The time in her life when she was saying yes to too many things & feeling pulled in a million directions (& what she did about it) A Prescription for loneliness if you’re a solo entrepreneur or just lacking connection in your life The one thing that we could ALL benefit from scheduling into your day, that you’re probably not making ANY time for right now. https://www.instagram.com/gillianmandich/

In this episode, we will listen in to Gillian Mandich, Happiness Expert as she animatedly and happily shared her knowledge about truths on happiness. She opened the show relating her recently earned a doctoral degree in Health Sciences and the researches she did refer to human being's most sought after “need for happiness.” Are you one who complains about just anything and everything? Even how much you try to convince yourself you don't seem to find a silver lining in all the chaos that's happening around? Well then, stop and listen in to hear Gillian's practical tips to everyday happiness. Yes, it's possible and doable. And you will be surprised to find out the often obvious but taken for granted facts about your happiness. As the topic is about happiness, Gillian also discussed the need for social connections and meaningful relationships. Another thing is the need for meditation specifically the one she practices herself, and that is yoga. Learn to delve more into her personal life experience about it and how it contributed massively to her well-being and to yours, too. Connecting with a Higher being is also part of her agenda. You should look forward to hearing all the logical reasons for that. Not satisfied with what she already shared with you, she goes on to tell you the one actionable step to your happiness and health. Are you ready? Because Dr. Doctor Gillian Mandich is. What You Will Discover In This Episode: Happiness is an everyday practice and not a short-term goal How you should focus on yourself and what makes you happy There's a so-called term called “dark side happiness” which crushes down true happiness Happiness is 50% genetic, 10% environment and 40% skill based activity -- Want to know my secret weapon when it comes to mortgages? https://streetwisemortgages.com/ Join our community here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/953421031472329/ Go here for all show notes: https://www.tahani.ca/fire-podcast/

Welcome to JoeVolunteer Radio! This is your weekly dose of inspiration, of humans helping other humans beings and showing you that this place is really a great place to live. It's all about HUMAN KINDNESS. This is part two of our episode with Gillian Mandich "The Happiness Doctor". We go deeper, talk more about the science of kindness and happiness. This is more of the "prescription" episode--how to actually BE happier and Kinder. It is such a pleasure and so much fun to know how the mind works in situations like this. Open and listen to this show, get inspired, know yourself better, and lead a better life! Thank you! Your hosts: Chip Franks--the founder of JoeVolunteer. Husband, dad, author, and entrepreneur. Welcome to JoeVolunteer Radio! This is your weekly dose of inspiration, of humans helping other humans beings and showing you that this place is really a great place to live. It's all about HUMAN KINDNESS. WOW!!! This episode is with Gillian Mandich, a happiness researcher at Western University in Ontario, Canada. We talked about the actual science behind happiness. You can find out about her, and sign up for her e-book on how to be happier at www.GillianMandich.com. We KNOW we feel good when we help others, and now we get to know why that is. Gillian took us behind why that happens. If you want to know how to be happier, and you want to be the type of person who shows more kindness, then there are actual scientifically PROVEN ways to make it happen. We geeked out a bit. We talked about dopamine, seratonin and other chemical cocktails going on in our system when kindness and happiness occur. When Gillian talked about the kindest thing someone had done for her, we were able to go "behind the curtain," to see what happened in her mind--and the mind of the doer--to show how it affects us as human beings. What's cool is that the giver and receiver of the A-OK (act of kindness) aren't the only ones that benefit! We also talked about what you can do to actually increase your happiness, and had a serious conversation about getting out of depression, and what to do if you feel you don't have any happiness. It was enlightening to say the least. We love that we get to introduce you to Gillian Mandich! Your hosts: Chip Franks--the founder of JoeVolunteer. Husband, dad, author, and entrepreneur. Tim Wambach--founder of the Keep on Keeping On Foundation. Public speaker, husband, and soon-to-be dad. Like the show? Give us a review on iTunes!
Gillian Mandich knows happiness is a science. She's actually well on her way to getting her PhD in Happiness. Yes, it’s real and it’s no laughing matter. In fact, happiness deeply effects your health. If you’re trying to lose weight, or lower cholesterol, actually going out and taking the steps to enjoy yourself might be better than even hitting the gym. And think happiness and sadness are on the same spectrum and mutually exclusive? Guess again.
