Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the life & career of Dennis Quaid. Perhaps best known for his roles as Jack Hall in The Day After Tomorrow (2004), Jimmy Morris in The Rookie (2002), and Cap Rooney in Any Given Sunday (1999), Quaid has been stocking up leading man roles since the 70s. Joined once again by Lauren Hopkins Price, we discuss his musical abilities on and off screen as the lead singer of The Sharks, the incredible number of real-life portrayals we've seen from him over the years, how he has transformed his project choice in the last decade, and why his charisma lends well to understated roles. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.
Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
Dogs are Smarter than People podcastWe've started a series of paid and free posts and podcast episodes about writing bestsellers. Our first post about this is here. To see them all just look up “hit novel” or “bestselling” in the search bar.Whew. Blah. Blah. Blah. Right? Not a bestselling way to start a podcast episode. What's a better way?Well, according to Jack Hall who wrote Hit Lit, “In most bestsellers, there's a central character who sets off on a journey that takes her from rustic America into turbulent urban landscapes, where her agrarian values either help her succeed or doom her to failure. Almost as often, the heroes of bestsellers make an exodus in the opposite direction, from the pressures of cities to the bucolic countryside.”Think the Epic of Gilgamesh.Think the Wizard of Oz.Think Star Wars.Think Twilight.Think Outlander.Jason Hellerman for NoFilmSchool writes, “The "fish out of water" idiom refers to a character who is removed from their normal day to day and has to catch up with their new outlook on the world. This writing trope is very popular in TV pilot episodes, action movies, and across almost any genre.“If the character adapts fast to the new environment, it's said they are like ‘a duck takes to water.'"You might be a city girl in the country or a country boy in the city or just a Hallmark Christmas movie character, but there's something that resonates in that trope, something that makes a bestseller.Hall takes it a bit deeper saying that it's about mythic identities. We see it in elections. The midwestern dad VP choice. The hillbilly boy done good VP choice. The outsider. The insider. We create myths where every single person in the middle of America is a part of “Heartland” full of “hardworking blue-collar” peeps.“Red state vs blue state. Working-class vs corporate elite. Virtuous vs decadent,” Hall writes. These polarities become mythic, gigantic, and they popularize stereotypes and polarize views.“While we all know these labels are bogus, they are so ingrained in our sense of national identity that we reflexively embrace them even as we discount their accuracy,” Hall writes.Books that argue both sides of these polarities and tensions? They tend to be the bestsellers.DOG TIP OF THE PODDon't be afraid to explore new experiences to make the best story of your life that you can!RANDOM THOUGHT LINKShttps://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/airline-news/2024/09/21/mouse-airplane-meal-emergency-landing/75324632007https://shepherdexpress.com/puzzles/news-of-the-weird/news-of-the-weird-week-of-october-3-2024SHOUT OUT!The music we've clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. Filmmaker Edgar Barens works with the Humane Prison Hospice Project to highlight the need for compassionate end-of-life programs in the US. prison system. According to Baren's bio on the Humane Prison Hospice Project website, his “Academy Award-nominated (2014) documentary, Prison Terminal, has screened in more than 60 prisons and at more than 80 colleges, universities, and community centers. Edgar takes great satisfaction in his ability to tackle large-scale problems within the American criminal justice system and present them on a very personal level so that the destructive impact of a dysfunctional correctional system can be made more palpable to the viewer.” His next film Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall chronicled the journey of inmate Jack Hall and his inmate brothers who were part of Jack's care team up to and through his death. Edgar witnessed incredible acts of kindness and compassion during his time with Jack and his hospice team. As the world becomes more and more interconnected and tech-driven one thing is clear, data is king. Beyond what your favorite food is or how you like to dress, data in the 21st century can be an almost complete picture of who you are. With enough data on someone, you can begin to influence them and with our reliance on technology it is more important than it has ever been to have ethical tech companies and that wouldn't be possible without all the people that work in them. Today we are joined by Jack Hall from HuntSource. HuntSource is a partner for tech companies that helps them identify and hire the best talent in Cyber Security, Data Intelligence, and Analytics. Jack is here to tell us about the company and how things got started!

Diteci la vostra, interagiremo con voi in chat live! Episode Topic: Jack HallWe begin with "Jack Hall," an old ballad that has its origins in the early eighteenth century. It begins as a narrative of the life of a convicted criminal who was executed at Tyburn Tree in 1707, but then mutates across time, with recordings by Irish and American artists like the Dubliners and Johnny Cash. We will ask what each of these versions contribute to the evolving tradition of the song, and how it became so widely known.Featured Speakers: Ian Newman, Professor in the English Department and Fellow of the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies and of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, University of Notre DameRev. It is past midnight and Guy and Tim are hanging on by a thread. The boiz are split between Auckland, (where Tim has a full house with a new puppy and a baby visiting and you better believe he's cooking big dinners at 2pm) and Arrowtown (where Guy is with his dad, reciting vegetables to Guy's mum to figure out what to cook for dinner). Ethan from Bangkok nails the tone of the project, we've got huge The Male Gayz fandom and a big fan of the boys who listens while commuting on their push bike. Louisiana Tim is a scary look-a-likey observed by Brandon and Jack Hall is writing from August 18 2020 and asking for Monty Senior to get on the pod.
