Art has a unique ability to transcend language, evoke emotion, and bring people together across cultural divides. This idea is embodied in the work of Samra Bashir, whose glass paintings celebrate the rich traditions of South Asian and Islamic art while inviting a broader audience into their intricate beauty. Samra's journey as an artist began as a personal escape—something she turned to during challenging times. But over the years, her work evolved into something much larger. Through her use of glass paint and light, she has built not just an art practice, but also a powerful means of storytelling, connection, and cultural education. In this episode of The Art Biz, host Alyson Stanfield talks with Samra about: How her creative journey started and what led her to glass painting. The role of light in her work and why it's an essential element. How she uses art to foster community and bridge cultural gaps. The importance of stepping out from behind the screen and sharing art in real-life spaces. Samra's story is a reminder that art doesn't just exist in isolation—it thrives in conversation, connection, and shared experiences. 01:50 Samra's Early Inspirations 02:28 Reviving Her Art in the U.S.04:05 Samra's Cultural Heritage and How It Shows Up in Her Work 08:42 Building an Audience and Overcoming Challenges11:37 Balancing Multiple Roles and Art 18:47 The Importance of Community and Teaching Workshops22:43 Connecting Through Art and Overcoming Barriers 26:08 Practical Tips for Artists to Engage with Community 36:50 Conclusion and Practical Applications for You
In this episode of The Art Biz, host Alyson Stanfield talks with author and artist Alyson Sheldrake. Every month for ten years, Alyson Sheldrake has published Snapshot!, an extensive digital magazine that promotes her work, her husband's photography, and local businesses. The most recent edition was 128 pages! In her words, Snapshot! covers art, photography, books, reviews, events, interviews, rescue dogs, authors, and news about the beautiful Algarve in Portugal. That's a lot of territory, and, as you'll see, she has plenty of story ideas for future content. Writing, designing, and publishing the magazine is not a grind for Alyson. She loves doing it, referring to it as “The newsletter that thinks it's a magazine.” It's a comfortable way to market for her that just so happens to reach about 17,000 people with each edition. Key takeaway: through the magazine, Alyson promotes others who, in turn, help promote the magazine and her art.

In this inspiring episode of the "Happy AF Show," host Phil Gerbyshak sits down with Jason Kotecki, an artist, author, and professional speaker known for his new book "Must Be Nice: Your Guide to Growing Beyond the Compare Game." They dive into a conversation full of insights, laughter, and practical advice on focusing your marketing efforts, the power of serving others, and overcoming the pitfalls of comparison.Key Takeaways:* Focusing Your Marketing with a Fishing Analogy:* Jason shares valuable advice from the late Shan Stevenson on marketing: Focus on your target audience like selecting a specific fish to catch. However, be open to serendipitous opportunities, akin to "different fish jumping in your boat."* Serving the Helpers:* Targeting "helpers" in sectors like healthcare, education, and law enforcement, Jason discusses how his message helps manage burnout and encourages self-care, emphasizing service over compensation.* The Must Be Nice Syndrome:* The core of Jason's book and our conversation revolves around transcending the "must be nice" mindset, which stems from comparing ourselves to others' highlights, and instead recognizing and leveraging our unique talents.* Integrating Talents to Stand Out:* Jason underscores the importance of combining skills (a talent stack) to create a unique offering. He shares his journey from separating his art from his speaking to integrating them, greatly enhancing his impact.* Avoiding the Comparison Game:* A significant portion of the discussion is devoted to strategies for avoiding the pitfalls of comparison, particularly in the context of social media, and focusing on our personal growth and contributions.5 Quotes:* On Marketing Focus: "When you're fishing, you need to pick what kind of fish you're going for and then put a specific type of bait to catch that fish. And if a different fish jumps in your boat, you're allowed to eat it." – Jason Kotecki* On Serving Helpers: "Our message resonates the most with helpers... reminding people of why they do what they do, encourage them, inspire them, give them some tips for managing the burnout." – Jason Kotecki* On the Must Be Nice Syndrome: "Must be nice is a phrase we've all said... but if you actually dive deep into your 'must be nice,' you will be on that stage and people will be in the audience saying, 'must be nice to be him/her.'" – Jason Kotecki* On Talent Stacks: "Instead of being the best in the world at something, we just need to pair some complementary talents together and be in the top 20%." – Jason Kotecki* On Avoiding Comparison: "Don't compare your everyday to someone else's highlight reel... remember, that's what it is." – Jason KoteckiJason and Phil's conversation is a masterclass in looking beyond superficial comparisons to find and nurture our unique strengths. By focusing on helping others, leveraging our talents, and remembering that everyone's highlight reel is just a part of their story, we can create a fulfilling path for ourselves and make a genuine impact.Call to Action:Grab your copy of "Must Be Nice" to explore deeper insights and strategies shared by Jason Kotecki. You know the beloved children's classic Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day? Today we talk with the amazing author, Judith Viorst! Judith shares her warmth, wisdom + cheeky humor about what it’s like to write books across genres for more than six decades – and what it was like not getting published for her first three decades! In honor of national poetry month, Judith will read an excerpt from her “decades series” most recent is her book Nearing Ninety: And Other Comedies of Late Life. Judith’s perspective on the joys + tribulations of life will remind you that laughter is truly the best medicine, at any age, to live an inspired life. SHOW NOTES: As a young girl, Judith began writing as poetry felt like a natural second language to her. Her first piece was published in her 30s. Say yes and we'll figure it out. Advice from her husband before being published for the first time. The capacity for child-like wonder lives inside a lot of us, even as we get to be a middle-aged person. [click to tweet!] Remaining playful is something you cultivate. Judith's first children's book The Tenth Good Thing About Barney was inspired by a conversation with her young son about death. Get a copy of it here. Her original publisher turned down Alexander and the Terrible Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day which has sold more than 4 million copies. Get a copy of it here. Inspired by the characters in The Secret Garden, Judith creates characters that are "hard-likes": not easily likable but always redeemable by the end. Judith shares her personal life through her writing, highlighting the ways people are more connected than they're different. "When nobody reads this book, and nobody likes this book, please remind me of the joy I had writing it and how proud I am of it."– Judith to her husband when submitting the manuscript of Necessary Losses. This book went on to be on the New York Times bestseller list for almost two years. Get a copy of it here. Judith's latest book, Nearing Ninety, is a collection of poetry from her "decades" series. These include Hard to be Hip Over Thirty, How Did I Get to be Forty, Forever Fifty, Suddenly Sixty, I’m Too Young to be Seventy, Unexpectedly Eighty. Judith reads her favorite poem from Nearing Ninety "My Legacy". What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Reliable. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? [She's been asking herself the same questions for 20 years and will call us when she has the answer!] 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? I can't count my husband because he'd be my #1 date even after 60 years. I wouldn't mind seeing my mother and asking her all the questions I was too dumb to ask her when she was alive. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Listen to people's stories, don't gossip, enjoy their joys, sympathize with their sorrows and be trustworthy of their secrets. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Don't; be so dumb and self-absorbed. Open your eyes. Look around a little more and stop worrying about what your hair looks like. 7. The Best Of The Onion Juice Podcast (Part 2) - Episode #171 Ladies and gentleman, it’s time to say goodbye to the Onion Juice Podcast. No, these tears are not from ACTUAL onion juice. It’s because this marks the end of an era. THANK YOU for helping me take something weird and make it popular. Of course, the podcast itself isn’t going anywhere. Just the name. So join me after the new year for the very first episode of Agent Rise with Neil Mathweg. But for now, enjoy the conclusion of the best of the Onion Juice Podcast! Do not put attraction above sphere or chase If you take a close look at who is liking and sharing your content online, you will find that less than 50% of your sphere of influence are the ones on Facebook or Youtube. Across all of my media platforms, most of the likes and comments come from photographers, videographers, and foodies. I love those guys, but they are not the ones who will be referring me or sending me leads. After over a year of hosting the I Love Madison Show, I JUST got two POSSIBLE leads that may turn into business. If I was relying on ILM for all my business, I would be starving. The vast majority of the clients I have worked with come from my chase pillar and my sphere of influence. If you don’t have a database, that’s where you need to start. An excel spreadsheet and a mailing list. Simple. That time I told you to “Get Angry!” You have an enemy that does not want you to succeed! That enemy only has power as long as you let fear run your life. That enemy wants to steal, kill and destroy everything that you are working on, and he uses fear to do it! To overcome that, it requires to get angry at the enemy (not at each other, mind you), call him out and strip him of his power! If that sounds like I’m preaching, good! You know best where fear has been given free reign in your life or business. Maybe it’s hiring a coach, or hitting a sales goal. As you eliminate fear, your confidence grows, and your way of thinking starts to shift. Are you working in excellence? I know there are STILL areas in your life and business where you are not doing all that you can do, you are not working in excellence. How do I know this? Because there are areas in MY life where I am taking the same approach. It’s not just a real estate thing, it’s a human thing. Often, we rest when we could be sowing seeds. Just because you sent an email or posted a new ad on Facebook does not mean you are done. Ask yourself, what do you want your “harvest” to look like? What do you need it to look like to see your life vision realized? Whatever picture you have in your head, you have to sow seeds accordingly and harvest accordingly. Remember to ALWAYS be yourself For real estate agents struggling to market themselves and attract more customers, Jason Kotecki said on Episode 109 that the key to success is to be your unique, authentic self. Instead of only thinking of yourself as an agent, remember that you are also an artist, and artists use their art to attract people. You’re thinking “dude, I can’t paint, and singing is an ABSOLUTE NO,” so how does that work? Jason reminded me that being yourself, allowing your personality and humor to shine is the best way to build relationships. “If you are watching and copying another person’s approach, chances are you are a second-rate version of the person you are copying, instead of a first-rate version of yourself,” he said. Take your JOB seriously, but don’t take YOURSELF so seriously. [2:44] Don’t let your attraction become your distraction [9:00] Dealing with the fear of success [19:26] Don’t sleep during the harvest! Today Jason Kotecki, artist, speaker + author, is here to help us combat what he calls adult-itis, or being stressed out, boring and no fun. Jason will help us rekindle our childlike spirit. Join us to harness the magic of being a kid + see the benefits it could have in your work and life. SHOW NOTES: "Enthusiasm is important because it gives you the energy to start + overcome early failures." Growing up, it's so important to have people who believe in you. Notice something good about him + tell him about it. Every once in a while, we need someone to tell us what we are good at. It's amazing what you can learn + how quickly when you try something new you are interested in. Get a tinker project. You don't need a reason, sometimes your heart has a reason to do something that your head doesn't yet understand. Do something that sounds fun; let it naturally rekindle some of your curiosity and playfulness. Tinkering - work on something in an unskilled or experimental manner. As adults we're too afraid of looking silly. Be willing to experiment and not put pressure on the out come. Just because you fail doesn't make you a failure, it makes you human. that is how you grow. Give yourself permission to try little things + see where they go. To make a difference you don't have to be superhuman, you just need to be brave + courageous 20 seconds at a time. As adults, we don't want to look foolish or silly and it really limits our potential. How can we breath joyful vibrancy into our lives when we are feeling beat down? Think back to something you did as a kid, that you loved. Buy a pack of baseball cards, go into an old candy shop with $10, watch Scooby Doo - whatever. There is a lot of magic in looking back at something that gave you joy. You're meant for something amazing. Go after that. Jason talks about the importance of creating white space. On Ep. #69, Juliette Funt discussed this topic in greater depth. Check it out here. JASON KOTECKI'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Path I read it and wrote my mission statement from it in college and still use it today. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I was an off-the-charts dreamer when I was a kid; always imaginative. I'm more cynical now, from the bumps and bruises. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? One or two paintings, my originals that mean something to me. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My wife. She is my best friend. We could talk about nothing we could talk about anything. If I was stranded somewhere, or looking at something beautiful, I would just want to be there with her. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Be yourself, everyone else is taken. - Oscar Wilde 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Don't worry so much. It's going to be different than you think, but it's going to be even better. Stay persistent and keep working. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Don't settle for the life you have been told to live, create the one you were made for. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. It is a little bit crazy when I think about the fact that I have been recording for the OJ podcast for nearly three years! Episode 156 will officially be the three-year mark, but I wanted to use this episode (150) to share a few of the life lessons that I have learned recently! I have been learning some amazing things about mindset, so I hope you will find these things as inspirational and life-changing as I have! Thanks for listening, you can expect more ear-guzzling awesomeness in the future! 64 Gifts Recently, my wife and I attended the Escape Adulthood Summit, hosted by Jason Kotecki from Escape Adulthood. Jason’s mission is to annihilate Adultitis and help people create better lives and businesses. During the summit, Jason brought up the idea of the Crayola box crayon box that had 64 different colors (yes, the one with the crayon sharpener!). If you had that box as a kid, you were considered super cool! Instead of crayons, Jason asked each person in attendance to write down 64 gifts or talents that we had. The skills could be simple, usually small talents we take for granted. After writing down a list of 64 of my talents or skills, I have to say I felt pretty good! This was a powerful reminder to me, and I think it could be for you as well! I wanna know, what 64 things are you good at? You can’t fill a moving cup! You have heard the phrase “I need to fill my cup.” Many of you realize that you are all poured out, and you need to recharge, but you don’t slow down long enough to let that happen. If you need to fill your cup, make sure you are finding the time to rest. After all, you can’t fill a moving cup! I’m telling for a friend I think people need to share more inspiring stories of kindness, but the problem is, it’s hard to do something kind for another person, then tell the story. It feels like bragging, right? Sure. That doesn’t change the fact that we need to spread more kindness. You know the phrase “I’m asking for a friend,” usually brought up when something is embarrassing? What if we started “telling for a friend” when someone does something kind? Make somebody’s day by being kind to them, or inspire new acts of kindness by “telling for a friend.” Your 99-year old self wrote you a letter Have you ever written yourself a letter? I recently participated in an exercise where I wrote to myself from the perspective of my 99-year old self! What would that guy say? What would he regret not doing? For me, the 99-year old talked about consistency with my current projects and encouraged me to stay the course. He’s a wise guy! I am learning to heed his advice! If you want the same experience, write me a letter (to yourself), and mail it to me, and after six months, I will print it out and send it to you! Fear is a liar Here is a simple truth: Fear is a liar. I used to struggle with anxiety and fear. It riddled my life to the point where I was taking medication to try and fix it, to no avail. I did not see a change in my anxiety until a friend taught me to take authority of that fear, and command it to leave! Fear comes from the enemy, but I have the authority, as do you, to rise above that fear and realize it is just a clever lie. What fears are riddling your life and stealing your joy? You don’t have to settle...I didn’t, and my life is absolutely better as a result! If you want to hear more of my story, I would love to share, and inspire you on towards a life without fear! Outline of this great episode [0:45] It’s almost the 3 year mark for the OJ, and I want to talk to you about what I have been learning! David had previously visited Madison a few years ago in the middle of winter. At that time, he had no interest in moving to here. Three years and one glorious August day later, David found himself loving everything Madison has to offer. He said he loves how electric the place feels, the fact that people are always out and about doing things around the city. From participating in local sports leagues to trying new restaurants with friends, there is always a sense of energy and endless things to do. David initially connected in Madison through a local church connection and now says he would love to see the rest of his family move to Madison. When Chris asked what his favorite thing in Madison is, David said: “Just being here.” Cure adultitis with Neil Mathweg and Jason Kotecki Neil’s featured guest this week is Jason Kotecki, an artist, author, and speaker who started a company called Escape Adulthood. Neil and Jason talk about why finding “your tribe” is so important and how establishing these fun connections can improve the quality of your life. Jason also talks about a concept he calls a tinker project. The idea started after Jason realized he had not created any artwork for more than a year, so he set out to create 100 pieces of art. He didn’t focus on monetizing the project, he just created because he loves art. Jason said, “Oftentimes, our heart has reasons that our head takes a while to understand.” Neil shared that the I Love Madison show originally started out as a tinker project, inspired by Jason Kotecki. We always hear people say, “Act your age!” But what does that really mean? What is someone who is 41 supposed to act like that's different than someone who is 40? We are told we have to grow up, but that can come with some dangerous consequences. When we try to “grow up” we lose the ability to take chances. We become afraid of the world. Adults don't play in the rain, they cower under umbrellas to escape the little drops of water from falling on us. We begin to follow rules because that's what we were always told to do. There's no reason for me to wait 30 minutes after eating before I swim. It has no science behind it, and yet many people still believe it's true. We follow so many rules blindly, and it may be time to start letting it go. So many people suffer from what Jason Kotecki refers to as Adultitis. We need to stop trying so hard to be safe adults, and start living like curious children who aren't afraid to dream. No one wants to be on their deathbed and look back at all the opportunities they missed because they were too afraid. On this episode of Creative Warriors we are joined by Jason Kotecki, author of Penguins Can't Fly, to discuss the problems associated with Adultitis. He goes into deep details about how adults hold themselves back, and become too afraid to even dream about a better world. Download this episode today to see how you can change your mind frame and start to live like a child again! WARRIOR OF FAITH “To live life without fully experiencing it seems like a colossal waste of time.” -Jason Kotecki Highlights - Fear of regret becomes more painful than the fear of trying something new. Life isn't a dress rehearsal. Do things for a reason, not because you've always done it. Adultitis means we lose the ability to dream and the curiosity we had as kids. There's a difference between being childish and being childlike. Look at things from a child's point of view. If a dream is realistic, it's not a dream - it's a to do. Don't be too careful or you'll never have anything awesome happen to you. This is the last episode in the Happiness Series. We have been taught to believe that we can not choose to be happy because happiness is something that can only be earned – that's not true. We can take hold of happiness any time we choose. Happiness is an attitude, and attitude is a choice. “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” –Viktor Frankl Over the past several weeks, we had leading experts from a wide array of industries share, confirm, and reiterate simple truths about happiness, fulfillment, and impact. Sheryl O'Loughlin had a phenomenal job, great career, and great potential – all of the success we might imagine for ourselves. However, it came at a great cost… one that nearly took her life. Sheryl taught us how truly powerful our choice to be happy can be. Ep. 53 – How Happiness & Love Help Entrepreneurs & Businesses Succeed – with Sheryl O'Loughlin. JP Sears joined us for two hilarious and ultra spiritual episodes. He helped us laugh, but he also offered insight about cultivating our greatness, belief, and rejoicing in small victories. Ep. 54 – Allow Yourself to Choose a Happier Mindset – with JP Sears Ep. 55 – How to Cultivate Your Greatness & Happiness – with JP Sears Doug Kisgen challenged us to rethink happiness, and in doing so accomplish great things by living a life of virtue (which means to do the common uncommonly well). He wasn't talking about scaling, hustling, or grinding – he was talking about love, patience, prudence, and justice. Ep. 56 – Rethink Happiness & Live a Life of Authentic Joy – with Doug Kisgen Jason Kotecki revealed the epidemic of adultitis, and encouraged us to engage in our childlike nature from time to time. Children are creative, insightful, speak their minds, and love unconditionally… can we do that? This episode is part of the Happiness Series. We have been taught to believe that we can not choose to be happy because happiness is something that can only be earned – that's not true, and I hope these amazing entrepreneurs will help you choose to find happiness. Doing so will give you an advantage in business, relationships, and life in general. Jason Kotecki is an artist, author, professional speaker, and entrepreneur. He and his wife founded Escape Adulthood in 2000 (and later The Cure Adultitis Institute) with one goal: annihilate Adultitis. Jason and his wife envisioned an ideal version of adulthood, but the “real world” didn't live up to it. Bitterness and cynicism are rampant – excitement and enthusiasm are elusive. Why? They realized that most of us lose something in the transition from childhood to adulthood: curiosity, delight, and the ability to dream big. However, the most successful entrepreneurs – the Musks and Jobs of the world – never lose these super powers. Escaping Adulthood isn't about ditching responsibilities to rediscover fun. It's about remembering what we once knew as kids so that we can improve our lives, our relationships, and our businesses. How do you bring more fun into the workplace in a productive way, without being branded the crazy misfit? How do you become a more fun parent and raise your children with discipline? How do you find time for yourself when you're a caregiver? Don't get caught living a paint-by-numbers life – we are made for more. The beauty of adulthood is freedom and choice, so live freely and make your own choices! If you want a crash course in productive fun, you can attend the 2017 Escape Adulthood Summit. You can also join their http://escapeadulthood.com/blog/community (free community of insiders) and find a ton of awesome escape tools, and so much more, over on EscapeAdulthood.com. -- Don't be a podcast junkie… Resources: Connect with Jason: Facebook Instagram Pinterest Twitter YouTube Escape Adulthood: EscapeAdulthood.com FREE Insider Community Escape Tools 2017 Escape Adulthood Summit -- We are also brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. Jason Kotecki (@escapeadulthood on twitter) joins host Craig Price to discuss Adultitis. Who wouldn't want to be a kid? We all would but growing up has a way of ending that. Thankfully, Jason is there to put a stop to Adultitis, a common ailment in adults that makes them take life too seriously. Of course, after taking the online quiz to see if he suffered from adultitis, it was not unexpected that Craig would have Stage 2 Adultitis: an aggressive and pervasive form of the disease. Together, Jason and Craig discuss how Jason's latest book "Penguins Can't Fly +39 Other Rules That Don't Exist" can help those that suffer from Adultitis. They talk about eating dessert first, Jason's desire, yet reluctance to buy redshoes due to Adultitis as well as random things like why Craig's wife makes him sleep on certain sides of the bed at hotels, stormtrooper armor, digital art and much more. In his enlightening book, Jason uncovers some of the most useless rules so you can shift perspective and start seeing the world with wonder once again. You can learn more about Jason and his book at http://rulesthatdontexist.com or just go and buy his book (out TODAY!) on Amazon. Todays guest taps into something on a daily basis that we also talk about on a daily basis. The connection between being an adult and the child we once were. You see, as we discuss on Join Up Dots there was once a time in our life, when we free and able to dream big. We could sleep well at night, and wake up rested, ready for another day of big dreams, fantasy lives, and well being a kid. And our guest came to the same realisation although from a slightly different route. You see our guest left college and along with his wife entered the “real world” and quickly noticed a few things. Like the fact that a shocking number of grown-ups are inflicted with Adultitis. They looked around and thought, “Hey, kids don't ever seem to be very stressed out – what do they know that we don't?” As they say " The “Adulthood” we encourage people to escape from is the one they create for themselves when they assume childhood is nothing more than a stage of life, a hermetically-sealed portion of their past. It is the Adulthood with all the stupid rules, the one that demands we always do the safe and prudent thing, that we earn play through hard work, and that we must always, without exception, take ourselves way too seriously. Yeah, that's the Adulthood that sucks. This desire for escape is not new. But too often our attempts are limited to cheap thrills, strong drinks, or mindless entertainment. We believe there's a better way." Well lets find out what that better way is, because I feel they have already got believer in me. So its with delight that we get to bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr Jason Kotecki
Escape adulthood is the rallying cry that energizes Kim and Jason Kotecki and empowers their delightful community of fellow rebels fighting against adultitis.
