In this episode of The Art Biz, host Alyson Stanfield talks with author and artist Alyson Sheldrake. Every month for ten years, Alyson Sheldrake has published Snapshot!, an extensive digital magazine that promotes her work, her husband's photography, and local businesses. The most recent edition was 128 pages! In her words, Snapshot! covers art, photography, books, reviews, events, interviews, rescue dogs, authors, and news about the beautiful Algarve in Portugal. That's a lot of territory, and, as you'll see, she has plenty of story ideas for future content. Writing, designing, and publishing the magazine is not a grind for Alyson. She loves doing it, referring to it as “The newsletter that thinks it's a magazine.” It's a comfortable way to market for her that just so happens to reach about 17,000 people with each edition. Key takeaway: through the magazine, Alyson promotes others who, in turn, help promote the magazine and her art.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, self-esteem is a confidence and satisfaction in oneself. It's a realistic respect or a favorable impression of oneself, a view of ones' accomplishments, capabilities, values and perceived success in the ability to live up to them. A healthy self-esteem reflects positively on our wellbeing. But, when we have low self-esteem, it can be destructive to our lives, our relationships, our health and wellbeing; it can be a painful existence. Sociologist Morris Rosenberg developed a self-esteem measure, (known by the acronym RSES) that's used widely in social science research. It uses a 0-30 scale where any score below 15 is indicative of problems with self-esteem. It's no secret that many of us suffer from low self-esteem. It's not only based on our own opinions and beliefs but can be an accumulation of our experiences and people who impact our lives, from our family to friends and professional relationships. Self-esteem can also suffer as we lose the roles we fulfilled throughout our lives, for example, when we leave our professions, our children leave our home, we lose a spouse, we lose a person we've been caring for, especially an older parent. Clarissa Burt understands the destructive impact poor self-esteem can have on well being. She embarked on a journey to examine the roots and devise an action plan so that anyone can rebuild their self-esteem in order to become the confident person they were meant to be. You deserve to Look good and Feel Good, Right Now!!. Whether or not you have a healthy self-esteem, I guarantee that merely listening to Clarissa Burt will have you experiencing an energy level that will have you feeling transformed.

Cory Doctorow is one of the earliest adopters of the Creative Commons License for his works. He and his science fiction novels play with this emerging era of creative cynicism. Should you spend your time churning out broad, general content to fill keyword gaps? Or should you hone in on what your business does best — niche content? The answer can transform your business into a content publishing powerhouse. Brian Morrissey, Founder of The Rebooting, joined me on the SEJ Show to share his publishing experiences, help you navigate the virtual fork in the road, and unlock the key to transforming your business into a sustainable growth machine. One of the things that I love most about what's happening in publishing now is that more people are publishing expert-level content. It's amazing.–Brian Morrissey, 25:35 We're seeing a shift to experts. It's incredibly important. It opens up publishing.–Brian Morrissey, 23:06 The ability to talk about things like monthly recurring revenue, annual recurring revenue, the ability to earn royalties off of your published work, whether it's a painting or a pixelization or an article or a book, it's kind of interesting it's something that we haven't had yet.–Loren Baker, 1:09:23 [00:00] - A little history about Brian. [44:13] - Why media can be an excellent business. [48:58] - Advice for ecommerce content marketing. [52:52] - Brian's take on the New York Times acquiring Wirecutter. [55:37] - The gateway to more revenue for publishers. [57:49] - Are people willing to pay for scarcity? [59:28] - Brian's take on content creators. [1:05:35] - Where is Web3 taking the world of publishing? Resources mentioned: The Rebooting - https://therebooting.substack.com/ Everyone went crazy for social and Facebook and tried to master that algorithm, and they sort of left behind like the original algorithm of the Internet, which was SEO. –Brian Morrissey, 46:40 If you start investing in publishing and writing today about your industry in your space, you can be the leader of your industry within a matter of years, even sooner. –Loren Baker, 20:00 The Internet's kind of broken our brains – we weren't meant to like to have this much information and try to make sense of it. There is this move to go back to scarcity, and I think part of the newsletter attraction is that they're typically scarce. –Brian Morrissey, 16:41 For more content like this, subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/searchenginejournal Are you looking to keep up with current and effective digital marketing today? Show Summary How do we learn lessons from the past? How can we leave behind our global problems and create a new era for humanity? What are the technologies and behaviors we need to adapt to make sustainable change, and how do we bring all that back to the people who can take action to change the world? These are the questions polymath tech Futurist Adah Parris has been grappling with in the face of the challenges we have today. In this episode of the Boldy Now show, Adah shines a light on these questions and gives us ways to recognize new patterns that can lead to a better future.    Learn More: ●     Website: https://http://bold.ly/ (bold.ly) ●     Bold.ly YOU App: https://bold.ly/you (https://bold.ly/you) ●     Digital Magazine: https://proofzine.com (https://proofzine.com) ●     Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheBoldlyNOWShow (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheBoldlyNOWShow) ●     Podcast: https://boldly-now.captivate.fm/listen (https://boldly-now.captivate.fm/listen) ●     Link Tree: http://linktr.ee/bold.lynow (http://linktr.ee/bold.lynow) ●     Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/boldlynow (https://www.facebook.com/boldlynow) ●     Twitter: https://twitter.com/boldlynow (https://twitter.com/boldlynow) ●     Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bold.lynow/ (https://www.instagram.com/bold.lynow/)   Full Show Notes The episode starts with a discussion on what it means to be a futurist. Adah gives a detailed insight into the term and how she came to be recognized as one. A futurist systematically explores the present to predict the future while considering the past. However, a futurist doesn't just have to be a mere predictor of patterns. The real task of a Futurist is to create stories that can help humanity pull into a better future. Adah is also a systems thinker. Her framework “Cyborg Shamanism” provides a lens through which we can look at the world and decode everything that happens around us. Cyborg Shamanism consists of five phases:  1. Leave – First Phase: How do we leave these problems/ old ways behind? 2. Breathe – Second Phase: How can we remove these tensions in the system to create a hypothesis for change? 3. Grow – Third Phase: What are the tools/technologies/rituals/behaviors to try to make this true? (i.e., How to stress test it) 4. Flow – Fourth Phase: Thinking long-term, what type of answers make it sustainable? 5. Ground – Fifth Phase: How do we ground that down to create a sense of kinship? All living systems are self-operating mechanisms. But, we always learn some lessons in one world that can be brought into the other. Binaries create competition and division. Whether it's spirituality, philosophy, physics, mechanics, or metaphysics, bringing different worlds together can help humanity cooperate rather than compete. Today, we need new technologies that are capitalistic but still provide a positive impact on humanity and the world. We need businesses that operate less like machines and more as living organisms. There's a lot to learn from nature. We can replicate how nature creates no waste. Perhaps a new hierarchy of needs would be appropriate in which the base level is “We” rather than “I." The rules of the game have already been broken by COVID. It's the right time to shift and change and create new, better and sustainable technologies. The same can be said about our political systems. We are still using a 100-200 years old top-down authoritarian approach to manage countries. Our politics is politics of divide and conquer. However, borders have become more fluid in this digital day and age. Organizations have become more influential like we see different organizations taking steps about vaccine passports. Humanity needs to figure...

“Demand utopia!” That's the tagline for a new digital magazine based in Eugene, Oregon. Solarpunk Magazine will focus on optimistic ideas about the future. What if humans came together to solve the climate crisis? What if people from marginalized groups all felt safe in society? The solarpunk genre imagines creative answers to these questions. Solarpunk Magazine will feature fiction, poetry, essays and interviews that fit into this relatively new genre. The editorial team raised $27,306 on Kickstarter and is currently reviewing submissions for its first issue, due out in January. We hear from co-editors-in-chief Justine Norton-Kertson and Briana Castagnozzi about their plans for the magazine and what solarpunk means to them.
