Jeff Marx, VP and Treasurer of large global chemical manufacturing company Hexion, reveals how anyone in finance can land their dream job. His method is to encourage anyone in finance to adopt a method called “the finance passport”. Rather than chasing “shiny titles that look good on LinkedIn” anyone in FP&A should consider the concept of a “finance journey” to become an all-round player. This means taking a trip through Treasury, tax, audit, and investor relations to be rounded and be able to talk confidently about all aspects of finance, improving your impact on whichever role you are in, but is especially powerful for anyone with CFO ambitions. “I've had roles in internal audit, financial planning and analysis, controllership” says Jeff revealing how this journey has transformed his mindset. In this episode Jeff talks to Paul Barnhurst about: Understanding the finance passport and how to adopt this shift in your career Moving from a promotion-based to a growth-based mindset in finance The difference between a finance “athlete” and a finance “specialist” How Treasury and FP&A can work most effectively together to drive business efficiency His favorite Excel formula Why ability to communicate effectively remains the best advice for anyone in FP&A Watch the full show on YouTube. On the surface, the two are opposites -- the introverted QB from the Midwest, the outgoing Cajun from down the bayou. Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom each week with a review of one of the region's many theatrical offerings. Today, she's spotlighting the new production of Avenue Q at the Community College of Baltimore County's Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre.Avenue Q is an American musical in two acts, featuring music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, and a book by Jeff Whitty. The coming-of-age satire tells the story of a hapless recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a rundown New York City apartment located on the titular Avenue Q, in an edgy part of town. While drawing lessons from the realities of his new neighborhood -- and shedding the idealism of his youth -- he and his new-found friends face the challenges of finding work, love and a purpose in life.Originally conceived as a TV series, Avenue Q opened on Broadway in July 2003 and won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Since its 6-year Broadway run of more than 2500 performances, it has been picked up for two national tours and a variety of international productions. The Cockpit in Court production at CCBC in Essex is directed by Todd Starkey, and continues through Sunday, July 1. Karina Deniké is a vocalist and songwriter from the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in Cambridge, England to Czech dissident artists, Deniké spent her early years performing street theatre throughout Europe, Northern Africa, and India. Upon settling in Oakland, California at age 12, she immersed herself in the vibrant local arts and music scenes of the area, soaking in everything from punk shows at the legendary 924 Gilman to the talents of jazz/soul greats Jon Hendricks, Fred Marshall (Vince Guaraldi, Chet Baker), and Sugar Pie Desanto. At age 18 she released her first album with the dual female fronted Dance Hall Crashers, and at 22 she was signed to major labels MCA and Warner/Discovery. Deniké has made a lifelong study of the finer nuances of vocals, harmony, and performance, moving fluidly from intimate torch song chanteuse to soul singer to punk powerhouse. From pop music to jazz to modern composers' works, she has lent her voice, arrangements, and compositions to more than 30 records, soundtracks, and countless national and international performances, and is an active member of the Bay Area music scenes. After extensive and fruitful collaborative work, Karina Deniké is excited to present the first album entirely focused on her unique compositional voice. "The writing for this album, Under Glass, began when I fell in love with a beautiful Farfisa chord organ. A charming, quirky wooden toy whose big reedy sound fully transported me to another time. I immediately wrote the song 'Musee Mecanique', a 1930’s inspired love ditty with a nod to my dear San Francisco and her stunning shores." Under Glass was released April 14, 2015 and features Deniké's six piece band and an impressive list of additional talent. Centered around power vocal performances and ornamented with an unusually rich collection of vintage sounds — including the chord organ, bass clarinet, Fender VI baritone guitar, vibraphone, and celeste — Under Glass features some of the Bay Area’s finest musicians and composers: Aaron Novik (Tzadik Records, PortoFranco Records), Michael McIntosh (Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project, the Cottontails), James Frazier, Eric Garland (Mads Tolling, Donavon), and Lily Taylor (Pour Le Corps Records). The album also highlights guests Deston Berry and Alex Dessert (Hepcat), Ralph Carney (Tom Waits, B-52's), Brigid Dawson (Thee Oh Sees), Ara Anderson (Tin Hat, OK GO), and Meric Long (The Dodos). With nods to doo wop drama, crackly records, Motown beats, girl group harmonies, 60's soundtracks, and Eastern European Lullabies, Under Glass is both strikingly original and warmly nostalgic. Its 12 reflective songs are filled with tales of female aviators, love, memory, and personal and regional history, firmly rooted in the musical worlds and seaside city Karina Denike calls home. Deniké has recorded with Dance Hall Crashers (MCA), NOFX (Epitaph), Tony Sly/No Use for a Name (Fat Wreck Chords), Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project (Smog Veil), and Hepcat (Hellcat), among others. She has shared bills with artists including The Pretenders, Fiona Apple, Beck, The Ramones, Thee Oh Sees, and Aimee Mann and performed at prestigious venues and events around the world, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), the Reading Festival (UK), the Warped tour, and the Fillmore. Recently, she contributed the acclaimed opening track to The Songs of Tony Sly; A Tribute (Fat Wreck Chords), was the guest music director for the SF Bay Area's Undercover Presents Series tribute to Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited (hosted by The Contemporary Jewish Museum of San Francisco), contributed lead vocals and vocal production to the album Home Street Home: The sHit Musical (written by Fat Mike of NOFX, and Tony Award winner/Avenue Q co-writer Jeff Marx), contributed a song to the 20th Century Fox film This Means War featuring Reese Witherspoon, and performed at the opening party for the world renowned art festival dOCUMENTA 2012, in Kassel, Germany.

Bonus Episode #5: If Yo Yo Ma is the cello star of the classical world, I'm going to say that Peter Sachon is the cello star of the musical theatre world. Not only has he played on such wonderful shows (and recordings) as the recent Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof, Off Broadway's A Man of No Importance and The Thing About Men, and the magically delicious The Light in the Piazza, but he's an entrepreneur as well.Peter hatched the idea to approach a handful of composers/orchestrators/musical directors and ask them each to contribute an original cello piece to a program he called The Cello Project, which he performed in March 2005 at Symphony Space, courtesy of The New Voices Collective. (Some of the composers represented on that bill were Stephen Schwartz, Michael John La Chiusa, Bruce Coughlin, Steve Marzullo, and myself.)The evening was such a success that he followed it up with The Cello Project II roughly a year later, adding Stephen Flaherty, Ricky Ian Gordon, Jeff Marx, Andrew Lippa and Ted Sperling (among others) to the list of contributors. The music was wonderful, and the playing was virtuosic. (Not to mention, he's pretty easy on the eyes.)On today's bonus episode (and just to be clear, bonus episode means that the featured song does NOT appear in my published songbook), Peter plays my contribution to The Cello Project, "Vouloir," written for cello and piano. Recorded 5/5/06.
