Heather Baker, Founding Director of the Institute for Vocal Advancement, explains how gestures enhance vocal training by providing an additional modality for the brain to learn new vocal skills. She explores the connection between gestures and the brain, sharing examples of personalised and meaningful gestures. KEY TAKEAWAYS 1) Cognitive and Neuroscience Aspects: Heather has found that gesture can serve as an additional input for the brain, which helps in understanding and solidifying vocal training. This mixed modality input (combining visual, kinesthetic, and auditory cues) enhances learning and performance. 2) Impact on Vocal Folds and Articulation: Gesture can directly influence what happens at the larynx and vocal folds, as well as affect articulation. By using specific gestures, singers can be guided to achieve better vocal production and coordination. For example, certain gestures can help with airflow, pitch accuracy, and the overall sound quality. 3) Personalization and Metaphor: By creating their own gestures to mimic the sound or sensation they are aiming for, students can make a stronger connection between the gesture and the vocal task. 4) External Focus of Attention: External focus of attention (such as focusing on a gesture) can enhance the internal mechanism of vocal production. By focusing on the gesture, singers can indirectly improve their vocal coordination and performance. 5) Observing and Performing Gestures: While observing a gesture can be minimally effective, actively performing the gesture is more impactful. For instance, observing a conductor's gesture can influence how singers breathe and perform. 6) Gesture Selection: Selecting the right gesture for a specific vocal task is crucial. Different gestures can help with different aspects of singing, such as airflow, pitch accuracy, or creating a certain sound quality. It's important to find the gesture that best mimics the desired vocal outcome. BEST MOMENTS "Observing gesture can impact the way singers breathe and produce sound" "Performing the gesture oneself is more effective than just observing" "Gesture is something I have always used in my teaching" EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: www.thesingingteacher.biz www.vocaladvancement.com Social Media: www.facebook.com/heatherbakersingingstudios www.instagram.com/heatherbakersingingstudios www.YouTube.com/the.singingteacher www.TikTok.com/the.singingteacher Relevant Links & Mentions: Kerrie Obert: www.ObertVoiceStudios.com Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.59 Top Tongue Tips for Boosting High Frequency Energy with Kerrie Obert Julia Nafisi: https://julianafisi.com/ Jenna Brown: https://www.jennabrownmezzo.co.uk/ Lisa Popeil: https://www.popeil.com/ Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.155 & 156: Building Neurodiversity-Inclusive Voice Studios with Dr Shannon Coates The work of Konstantin Stanislavski The work of Arthur Lessac Chris Johnson Vocal Coach: https://chrisjohnsonvocalcoach.com/ Chris Johnson Teach Voice: https://www.teachvoice.com/ Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.109 Mastering ‘Acting Through Song' Techniques to Elevate Musical Theatre Performance with Louisa Morgan Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.40 Integrated Skills: Teaching Singing to Dancers with Jennie Morton BAST Book A Call ABOUT THE GUEST Heather Baker, a Contemporary Voice Teacher in Northern England, is the Founding Director of the Institute for Vocal Advancement (IVA) and an IVA Ambassador. If you're like many vocal coaches, you've probably used the metaphor of a balloon filling up with air to illustrate proper breathing techniques to your students. But does this type of imagery make sense to everyone?According to this episode's guest, vocal health specialist Jenna Brown, a more effective technique is to let students take an active role in creating images that resonate with them during your singing lessons. Using this “symbolic modeling” technique not only builds a stronger rapport between teacher and student but can also offer shortcuts to learning. In her chat with Tom and Heather, Jenna delves into what she's discovered as both a voice researcher and vocal coach. She examines the different types of imagery teachers can use in their classes and the effectiveness of using multiple forms of imagery. In this episode, you'll learn:(6:00) Why singing and teaching professionally led Jenna to become a MA voice pedagogy student researching ways of teaching students better.(9:18) How science, the arts, and relationships all play a part in imagery and voice(11:31) What imagery in voice lessons looks like(14:24) Why adopting a multi-modal approach to imagery can be useful for making learning connections.(16:01) Why most teachers tend to use “stock imagery” in their lessons — and how we can make these images more personal to students(18:45) How Jenna helps students discover the singing images that resonate most with them(22:55) When (and if) teachers should impose their own understanding of how the voice works onto a lesson(24:35) The challenges of personalizing imagery when teaching large classes — and the common experiences singers can have with their voices(27:38) How teachers can help students learn faster by building a shared language of personalized metaphors(30:49) The negative side of using imagery — how metaphors can lead to confusion and misinterpretation for some students(34:52) How science is regarding imagery now(39:36) Why students need to develop a toolbox of skills to adapt to the changing needs of their voices(42:40) How voice teachers can use imagery in their classes without realizing it(45:30) The importance of seeing every student in your class as an individual — and how to adapt your lessons to their personal experiences You can find Jenna at Bristol Voice Care and her website. In this episode, we're interviewing Jenna Brown, one of the experts that we're partnering with for our 12-week Intuitive Healing program, In Sync. We've personally worked with Jenna throughout our own healing journeys, and when we made the choice to step into her energy and we surrendered to this deeper work, we experienced monumental shifts - quicker than we ever thought possible. Jenna specializes in helping you reconnect with your intuition, deconstruct old paradigms that are no longer serving you, re-engage with your inner child, and embark into shadow work through many different methods, including hypnotherapy, NLP timeline therapy, and subconscious reprogramming. Her own personal shifts came after she had a near-death experience while pregnant with her third baby. Are you willing to stop assuming that you know anything about anyone else’s experience until you have given them space to tell you? In today’s episode I talk with Jenna Brown from love over fear wellness. Jenna is a change maker. A space holder. An eloquent, warm, vibrant presence that I am so glad exists in the world. In today’s episode Jenna talks about how full spectrum doula work = trauma informed care Trauma is really death by a thousand cuts – it’s not in one event, and for many, many people it’s interwoven with daily traumas. Some of the things we talk about in today’s episode are: being trans non binary in the birth world why pregnancy and birth is not a celebration for everyone and how do we support people through pregnancy, birth, identity death and other forms of rebirth, death and loss not making assumptions about people, and truly leaning into individual led care how triggers are invitations for healing 00.09 the assumption that recipients of care will tell us about their gender, sexuality or past abuse 14.10 using a non-assumption approach 19.00 Why the rhetoric of “trust your instincts and your body in birth” doesn’t work for some people 21:33 the body as a harbinger as trauma – walking around in a suit of your own trauma as a trans person 31:15 why not everyone who is pregnant is a woman 38:00 How learning about gender and sexuality and attraction teaches you something about yourself 41:00 Some basic stats about discrimination of trans people 43:48 How systems use shame to influence behaviour 51:40 using a safety plan for your self-care so that you don’t get stressed and then get stuck in inaction. 55:00 redefining being an ally Permission to be dynamic and need different things in different moments How love and a desire for compassion and enriching our lives with diversity is the killer for fear Jenna Brown: loveoverfearwellness.com IG and FB handle: @loveoverfearwellness Jenna’s book: Queer and Pregnant journal https://www.amazon.com/Queer-Pregnant-Mx-Jenna-Brown/dp/1798226324/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3GS2OO7H9SY8P&keywords=queer+%2B+pregnant&qid=1553903742&s=gateway&sprefix=queer+%2B+pre%2Caps%2C157&sr=8-1 Glossary for providers: https://www.lgbthealtheducation.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Glossary-2018-English-update-1.pdf Resource for inclusive birth professionals, includes many links to continued education opportunities: http://www.birthforeverybody.org/ One story, of many: https://www.autostraddle.com/bearing-life-with-and-alongside-on-masculinity-pregnancy-and-medical-trauma-438219/#comments
