Liquefied natural gas (“LNG”) technology has enabled the United States to become the world’s largest exporter of natural gas in recent years, boosting our allies’ energy security and our own domestic economy and trade balance. Some estimates show that U.S. LNG export capacity will almost double over the next several years as facilities currently under construction come online. But LNG has met opposition from those concerned about its environmental impacts – including the Biden Administration, which announced a “pause” on approvals of LNG exports earlier this year. The clash has made its way into the courts: In July 2024, a federal trial judge stayed the administration’s policy, and in August, the D.C. Circuit rescinded FERC’s previous authorization of two LNG projects on the Texas coast due to alleged deficiencies in its environmental analysis. Our panel of experts will discuss these recent policies and rulings, along with the broader implications of American LNG for energy security and international environmental efforts.Featuring: Gabriel Collins, Baker Botts Fellow in Energy & Environmental Regulatory Affairs, Baker Institute for Public Policy, Rice UniversitySpencer Churchill, Associate, Winston & Strawn LLPModerator: Daniel G. The Biden administration in January announced a pause in reviewing export permits for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in order to better understand the impacts that the United States' world-leading LNG exports will have on domestic natural gas prices, climate change, and environmental equity. Could the pause threaten the U.S.'s position as the world's top LNG supplier? Charlie Riedl, executive director of the Center for LNG, speaks to the the national security implications of the administration's pause – U.S. LNG was instrumental in Europe's pivot away from Russian gas in the wake of the Ukraine invasion – and says the regulatory action has prompted concerns among European allies and buyers regarding the reliability of the United States as an energy supplier. The economic and environmental impacts of LNG exports have been studied and restudied, says Riedl, who sees election-year politics prompting the announced review.  Given today's record-low prices for natural gas in the U.S. and the projected impact of the Environmental Protection Agency's recently finalized methane emissions-monitoring rules, the outcome of the new review should be a net positive for the industry, he suggests.Support the show

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a hydrocarbon gas consisting primarily of propane, butane, or a mixture of both. Because it produces lower greenhouse gas emissions than traditional solid fuels, there's increasing demand for LPG across the world. In fact, some governments have implemented policies and initiatives to promote the use of LPG to reduce air pollution and improve public health. This increased demand puts the onus on storage terminals to use their capacity as efficiently as possible, by optimizing inventory management and safety. This can be achieved by integrating non-contacting radar level gauges into tank gauging systems. Control's editor-in-chief, Len Vermillion, spoke with Tomas Hasselgren, manager of global business development at Emerson, about the challenges of LPG tank gauging, and the benefits that can be achieved by using non-contacting radar level gauges rather than traditional level measurement technology.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - David Keane, senior vice president for policy and corporate affairs for NextDecade, spoke to students about careers in the energy industry at Rally in the Valley 2.0.The networking event, hosted by the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation and held at the Brownsville Events Center, connected high school students from Brownsville ISD with prominent industry partners offering student internship opportunities. NextDecade owns Rio Grande LNG, which is building a  liquefied natural gas export terminal at the Port of Brownsville. “This $18.4 billion project is the largest greenfield - and when I say Greenfield there's never been an industrial facility on this particular site - energy project financing in US history, highlighting the significant role that liquefied natural gas will play in the global energy transition now and for many years to come,” Keane said.“At full capacity, Rio Grande LNG will produce 27 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually, which is enough natural gas to heat 34 million homes a year.”“But what exactly is LNG?” Keane asked. “It is, essentially, cooled methane or natural gas, which is the same form of heat that you currently have if you have it in your house. Once liquefied, it is stored in specially designed tanks and transported on special ships to customers around the world.”Keane then discussed another of NextDecade's subsidiaries.Next Carbon Solutions aims to address carbon change concerns by capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide during the liquefaction process. CCS or carbon capture and sequestration is a revolutionary technology that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Keane said.“Rio Grande LNG, with the implementation of CCS, aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90%. And we actually think we can get to about 95%. Through our proprietary CCS process we have obtained nine patents and are also in discussions with global companies to offer our CCS services globally.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service to read the full story. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Mozambique has started exporting liquefied natural gas for the first time, in a move the country's President Filipe Nyusi has described as historic. The gas has been produced at an off-shore plant run by Italian energy firm Eni, but British oil giant BP has the purchasing rights over it. Mozambique hopes to become one of the world's biggest exporters of natural gas, following its discovery in the northern Cabo Delgado province in 2010. The government believes the discovery of gas will boost the economy, but Mr. Nyusi says Mozambique would continue to focus on traditional activities such as agriculture, fishing, and tourism, to achieve development.

To the twin certainties of death and taxes, the energy investor might add increased US exports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Energy independence. It's a simple idea where a country produces more energy than it consumes. Achieving it, however, is a different story. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2020, the U.S. https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/us-energy-facts/#:~:text=Total%20energy%20production%20declined%20by,primary%20energy%20production%20in%202020. (produced 95.75 quads) (a common unit of measure for energy resources) and consumed 92.94 quads — so, technically, we were energy independent that year. But we also export some of that energy, requiring us to import things like oil and other petroleum products each year. So, in that sense, we can't claim total energy independence. Countries in Europe are learning this lesson the hard way as they try to eliminate their dependence on Russia for energy sources like liquefied natural gas. Russia invading Ukraine brought the issue into the spotlight. Because there is limited access to natural gas in Europe, the European Union needs outside sources. In this episode of The Bull & The Bear, I'm going to share an energy trend I've discovered and how you can find profit from it. WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued yet another extension to its suspension of hours of service for commercial vehicles in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In a May 13 notice, FMCSA announced that the exemption will now expire on June 14, 2020. The original emergency declaration granting relief from hours-of-service requirements was issued March 13 and was initially set to expire April 12. In April, that expiration date was extended to May 15, and the hours-of-service waiver has now been extended for another month. The FMCSA's declaration provides for regulatory relief for commercial motor vehicles transporting the following: Medical supplies and equipment related to the testing, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. Supplies and equipment necessary for community safety, sanitation and prevention of community transmission of COVID-19 such as masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, soap and disinfectants. Food, paper products and other groceries for emergency restocking of distribution centers or stores. Immediate precursor raw materials — such as paper, plastic or alcohol — that are required and to be used for the manufacture of essential items. Fuel. Liquefied gases to be used in refrigeration or cooling systems. Equipment, supplies and persons necessary to establish and manage temporary housing, quarantine and isolation facilities related to COVID-19. Persons designated by federal, state or local authorities for medical, isolation or quarantine purposes. Persons necessary to provide other medical or emergency services. The expanded and extended declaration stipulates that direct assistance does not include routine commercial deliveries, including mixed loads with a nominal quantity of qualifying emergency relief added to obtain the benefits of the emergency declaration. To ensure continued safety on the nation's roadways, the emergency declaration stipulates that once a driver has completed his or her delivery, the driver must receive a minimum of 10 hours off duty if transporting property, eight hours if transporting passengers. WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued an extension to its unprecedented suspension of hours of service for commercial vehicles. The agency also extended the qualifying supplies to include liquefied gases to be used in refrigeration or cooling systems. The original emergency declaration granting relief from hours-of-service requirements was issued March 13 and was initially set to expire on April 12. The agency's release states that “because emergency conditions have not abated” the relief will continue.
