Heather Baker, Founding Director of the Institute for Vocal Advancement, explains how gestures enhance vocal training by providing an additional modality for the brain to learn new vocal skills. She explores the connection between gestures and the brain, sharing examples of personalised and meaningful gestures. KEY TAKEAWAYS 1) Cognitive and Neuroscience Aspects: Heather has found that gesture can serve as an additional input for the brain, which helps in understanding and solidifying vocal training. This mixed modality input (combining visual, kinesthetic, and auditory cues) enhances learning and performance. 2) Impact on Vocal Folds and Articulation: Gesture can directly influence what happens at the larynx and vocal folds, as well as affect articulation. By using specific gestures, singers can be guided to achieve better vocal production and coordination. For example, certain gestures can help with airflow, pitch accuracy, and the overall sound quality. 3) Personalization and Metaphor: By creating their own gestures to mimic the sound or sensation they are aiming for, students can make a stronger connection between the gesture and the vocal task. 4) External Focus of Attention: External focus of attention (such as focusing on a gesture) can enhance the internal mechanism of vocal production. By focusing on the gesture, singers can indirectly improve their vocal coordination and performance. 5) Observing and Performing Gestures: While observing a gesture can be minimally effective, actively performing the gesture is more impactful. For instance, observing a conductor's gesture can influence how singers breathe and perform. 6) Gesture Selection: Selecting the right gesture for a specific vocal task is crucial. Different gestures can help with different aspects of singing, such as airflow, pitch accuracy, or creating a certain sound quality. It's important to find the gesture that best mimics the desired vocal outcome. BEST MOMENTS "Observing gesture can impact the way singers breathe and produce sound" "Performing the gesture oneself is more effective than just observing" "Gesture is something I have always used in my teaching" EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: www.thesingingteacher.biz www.vocaladvancement.com Social Media: www.facebook.com/heatherbakersingingstudios www.instagram.com/heatherbakersingingstudios www.YouTube.com/the.singingteacher www.TikTok.com/the.singingteacher Relevant Links & Mentions: Kerrie Obert: www.ObertVoiceStudios.com Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.59 Top Tongue Tips for Boosting High Frequency Energy with Kerrie Obert Julia Nafisi: https://julianafisi.com/ Jenna Brown: https://www.jennabrownmezzo.co.uk/ Lisa Popeil: https://www.popeil.com/ Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.155 & 156: Building Neurodiversity-Inclusive Voice Studios with Dr Shannon Coates The work of Konstantin Stanislavski The work of Arthur Lessac Chris Johnson Vocal Coach: https://chrisjohnsonvocalcoach.com/ Chris Johnson Teach Voice: https://www.teachvoice.com/ Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.109 Mastering ‘Acting Through Song' Techniques to Elevate Musical Theatre Performance with Louisa Morgan Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.40 Integrated Skills: Teaching Singing to Dancers with Jennie Morton BAST Book A Call ABOUT THE GUEST Heather Baker, a Contemporary Voice Teacher in Northern England, is the Founding Director of the Institute for Vocal Advancement (IVA) and an IVA Ambassador. In this episode, I share some of the key things you will need to know or consider to prepare yourself to freebirth. 1. Educate Yourself Extensively: Podcast, books, courses, being part of a program like mine (6 - Month of Group Mentoring) where you can get guided support My book recommendation and quick guide is: Home Birth On Your Own Terms: A How-To Guide For Birthing Unassisted by Heather Baker. If you are trying to purchase in Australia send me a DM on Instagram or email me and I will let you know where you can access a copy. 2. Mindset, mindset, Mindset Mindset is one of the biggest ways to talk yourself out of birth at home, or a freebirth, with fears popping up, old birth stories that need answering popping up from time to time causing doubt or worry, or not being prepared in a positive way to handle the pain of labour. You want to have a strong foundation and work through all of those challenges before you go into birth with your homebirth/ freebirth baby. Starting with a strong foundation gives you the best chance at success for a homebirth. 3. Create a Birth Plan and Emergency Plan: Going through the process of creating a birth and transfer plan means that you understand some of the interventions available and how to accept or decline them understanding the path that those choices could lead to. If you are not sure where to start with this, you could do this with your birth doula, midwife (if planning an assisted birth) or book in a session with me to create this plan for yourself. 4. Gather Necessary Supplies: I referred to a previous podcast episode that takes you through all the supplies you could want and need for a freebirth. You can listen to this podcast episode here. As voice coaches, we need to properly assess our students' voices before we can devise effective lesson plans for them. But what happens when you get a student who can't match the pitch you want them to sing? It's an issue that comes up a lot in our chat box. Many voice teachers wonder if these students are “tone deaf.” They worry their students can't recognize different notes or sing tunes accurately. This creates a lot of stress when they try to understand the student's issues and come up with proper exercises. When this happens, it's important to have the right teaching tools ready to help students sing in tune. In this episode, IVA co-founder and mentor teacher Heather Baker shares the “pitching tools” she collected after encountering many “tone deaf” students in her classroom.Join us as Heather reveals why the term “tone deaf” is such a misconception. You'll also learn what the research says about pitch recognition and formation — and how popular video games can help students improve their pitching skills! In this episode, you'll learn:Why the term “tone deaf” is so inaccurate 12:20What “amusia,” the neurodevelopmental disorder that affects perception and production of musical sounds, really is — and why it isn't a problem for most voice teachers 13:22Why only listening to different pitches doesn't help many “tone deaf” people match pitch 16:14How growing up in musical or non-musical environments affects your ability to match pitch 20:18 What the phrase “practice makes permanent” means when developing motor functions 21:30Why listening to recordings of your own singing voice makes recreating notes easier 24:03 Why accurately demonstrating singing techniques in front of students is so important 26:41 How to pinpoint where a student's pitching issues come from 30:07What research says about taking the time to form a mental representation of a desired pitch before producing the pitch 32:42 How the brain interprets feedback to create a more accurate pitch 36:56Why nursery rhymes are used so often when training the brain to sing 38:53 How playing the singing version of the “Guitar Hero” video game can improve pitching 40:40Learn more about Heather's insights into music instruction by subscribing to the Vocal Advancement Podcast.About the Institute for Vocal AdvancementHeather's teaching tools are only the start of what you'll gain when you join the IVA community. VayetzeGenesis 28:10–32:3The Unexpected BlessingJoin is for our Shabbat Service with Jacob Lane with worship with Celso Ruiz and Heather Baker! What does obedience look like? Obeying the Father never turns out the way we think it will. Jacob fell in love with Rachel because of her outward beauty, but perhaps Leah was actually the bride Yahweh chose for Jacob. After the deception of Laban, what if Jacob had stopped and said, “Ok Yahweh, you sent me here to get a wife, now I have one, is this what YOU intended?” When we assume we know what the Father is doing, determine what obedience looks like to us, and fix something so rigidly in our minds thinking, “This is the only way my obedience will work out…” We can miss His will and wander around the wilderness for a while. Especially if you have a “mission” - a thing you heard from Him. Something you have been praying for or waiting on and you have it all mapped out in your mind - this is how it will look… don't be surprised when you see Le'ah and not Rachel. It never turns out how we thought, but it always turns out how He said it would. Hola! In episode 16, Love & Lending, our cohosts and expert guest, Mrs. Heather Baker, discuss if it is wise to lend money to family and friends. They also examine what advice they would give to someone who is struggling financially but wants to support a loved one financially. Lastly, they share how to approach a loved one who owes you money but has not paid you back. This can be a messy and hard topic for many, but someone needs to talk about it.
Mark your calendars! The REACH Columbus Take a Seat fundraiser is coming up soon.
Join us live for our Shabbat service, with worship lead by Celso Ruiz and Heather Baker and the Torah Portion by Bill Cloud. Ki Tavo Deuteronomy 26:1 – 29:8 God made a promise to Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, and later told him, “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.' With the promise came the responsibility for Abraham to keep the covenant God made with him and his descendants. Perhaps he was chosen because God had confidence that he would keep the covenant and would teach his children to do the same. Consider Isaac's devotion to his father and to God in that he willingly consented to let Abraham's servant find a bride for him. Isaac, later, had a son named Jacob who was a temperate man and also had respect for what was holy - like the birthright. The point is that like Abraham, we must teach the next generation to be obedient to the Almighty in all their ways. Parents must pay attention to the details and teach them to their children. Children must respect their parents and walk in submission and obedience. With this comes blessing, prosperity and continuity of the covenant, but when this breaks down in a family, the result is eventually carelessness, disregard, disrespect and disobedience. When this develops within enough families, the nation and Body at large suffers. So the question before us today is, What will our children inherit from us? If you are enjoying this live stream, PLEASE consider sending in an offering, tithe, or donation to help us continue spread the gospel free from Jacob's Tent. We work hard to make sure this is an enjoyable experience to our online community, but it doesn't come without a price. Give online via the Jacobs Tent app, our website, or text any amount to 84321 to support this ministry. Yahweh bless you and keep you! Shalom.
Heather Baker of AY Magazine and Arkansas Money and Politics joins Morning Mayhem to talk about all the events going on this weekend.
This week's story is about a soldier who was injured, neglected, and then died after there was an order issued to watch over him. Instead, his body was left in his room to decompose for days before anyone cared enough to check on him. This is the story of private Caleb 'Smitty' Smither.According to Heather Baker, her son, private second class Caleb grant Smither from Texas. He had a fascination for the military. It's what led him to joining the army and going through jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia. he then joined the 82nd airborne out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, upon graduating from jump school.Caleb was known as Smitty by his friends and served with the E company 37th brigade engineer battalion second brigade combat team after spending seven weeks and four days at Fort Bragg. Caleb was found dead in his barracks room on January 21st, 2020. He was only 19-years-old. He spent his final moments alone and in agony from a head wound.Caleb died of bacterial meningitis. This was after he hit his head on a radiator earlier in January, 2020. He was working on a military vehicle when the accident occurred. Heather Baker, and her attorney blamed Caleb's death on medical malpractice at the Womack army medical center and his fellow soldiers who were supposed to look after Caleb. One soldier claimed to have checked on Caleb on January the 19th. And he said Caleb was fine. He later admitted that he had lied and never checked on Caleb. Caleb texted regularly until January the 15th when his phone went silent. Heather believes her son died on the 15th, which is why all phone activity ceased. Another soldier smelled Caleb's decaying body, but never checked his room to investigate. What I find so troubling about Caleb's death is the meningitis ruling. If you do any research on meningitis or if you've had it, you realize that it is contagious. If Caleb truly died from it, then how come no one else contracted it? According to Heather, there was no quarantine and no other soldiers were tested for it. If the military cared so much for its troops, then why wouldn't anyone else be tested? I don't think I will ever have to say Heather's title again. It's testing my brain, tongue and Invisalign (dizzy emoji!). Her title is long and her passion for TPS is enormous! So glad Zepf Center friend Larry Smith connected us so Heather can talk about an upcoming community event for TPS, and a nice little preview of the 2022/23 school year. First up! The meeting for the Waterville amphitheater was...overcrowded, so postponed. And, I need to apply an Ed Sheeran song analogy to some things you love, that won't stop arising.

Are you trying to create brand awareness? Generate leads? And develop an overall marketing strategy that increases the value of the business so it can sell for more? This week on Build Value By Choice, Nana is joined by marketing experts Heather Baker Steele and Randi Skinner. Find out how Heather and Randi help business owners increase the value of the business to meet their goals through marketing strategy. KEY TAKEAWAYS One of the greatest misconceptions business owners have is that their marketing tool doesn’t work. It’s more likely that your strategy is either focusing on the wrong objective or the wrong audience. It’s not the tool that’s wrong, it’s everything leading up to that point. A mistake business owners make is to try to appeal to everyone with your marketing and only do it for a short time. Randi and Heather would tell them to take a step back and target a more specific group for a longer period of time. You should spend time defining your brand persona and audience persona. Step one of their five step process is to look at what your vision for your organization is. What does the next five to ten years look like? Are you looking to increase in size? Are you looking to sell? etc. Essentially, why does the business exist and what is your role in it? Step two is about clarifying what value is for a business owner. There is market value but what is the value of the business to you as an owner? It’s a question of internal value versus market value. Step three is about creating vision informed business goals, what do you need to be achieving to reach those goals. Step four is analyzing the metrics, looking at those internal and external numbers to do with budgets and client retention etc. Step five is what are your benchmarks and your goals, and working out how can you best fulfill those? As a business you need to embody your values from the top to the bottom. If that doesn’t happen authentically then it can hurt your brand. A large business such as Walmart can probably get away with it, but as a small business you need to show that you practice what you preach. Welcome back to part 2 of our mayhem in Miami! Did you guys catch our new official song for the podcast? We are so excited to have Heather Baker, Music Director and guitarist for Olivia Rodrigo, produce this song for us. She is insanely talented and you check out more of her work below. We've also provided you the lyrics should you want to see those too. This week, we wrap up our story about our weekend in Miami. Humbling, is an understatement. There was one off-beat experience after another. Everything from nicknames, absurd food orders, Barbara Streisand, and double body suits. You do NOT want to miss this one. Enjoy the show! - Talkaholic - Humble & Hungry Podcast theme song lyrics Pressed Lips and a crowd to please, so hot but got mouths to feed. 3-2- let's go, pick up the call sis, let's roll. Make it rain like we're from the tropics, drip-drop, hot gossip, and wine lips A-B-Let's see… are you ready? So Hungry… There's no need to talk about it, You really know we're all about it, and when you go we go, all all all, all in. There's only one way to talk about it, shootin' shit like a talkaholic, and where we go, you go…. ready, set, let's go… Stay hungry. - Producer/Engineer: Heather Baker Vocalist: Moa Munoz Mixer: Alexia Stratton Lyrics by co-Written with Andy Lara - Heather Baker is a producer and musical director based out of Los Angeles, CA. A discussion about all things licensure in recreation therapy with one of the licensure co-chairs from the Nova Scotia Therapeutic Recreation Association.
On todays show I chat with artist and birthkeeper, Amy, about her three births. It was never a question that she would birth her babies in the safety and comfort of her home; having an innate trust in her body, Amy went on to have two powerful, life-changing experiences, utilising midwifery care. When she called in her third baby, she never felt the need to contact anyone and intuitively went down the path to freebirth. She shares the real and raw emotions she felt during an unexpected quick labour, the challenge but total wonderment of birthing her baby en caul, plus some great insight into “Lotus Birth”. But if you're Heather Baker, co-owner of Twist and Shake ice cream shop in Elyria, you know it takes more than a few delicious toppings to create a winning treat. You need a name that sells, and in this case, the Unicorn Fart was born! During the ice cream “off season,” Baker is a teacher with Elyria Schools. She joins us for some sweet-treat fun on this episode of Petey Podcast!

She's a lifelong creative -- having spent time acting, directing, and working a 12 year career in design and tech. Originally from the US, Heather now proudly calls Australia home. Heather and I connected after she reached out to me just before the pandemic, and we've become firm friends over the past year. In this episode we explore her personal creative living story, her experience working as the manager of a design team for Cricket Australia, four ways she loves to talk back to the inner critic, her journey to finding her creative purpose, launching her business amidst a global pandemic and lots more.
