What You'll Learn in This Episode:· How the pandemic has accelerated a fourth industrial revolution· Why prosumers' favorability of Big Tech companies has increased during the pandemic· How the way we view tech has evolved from important to essential· Ways that prosumers want Big Tech companies to be held more accountable How is it that, despite intense scrutiny and criticism in recent years, Big Tech companies such as Amazon, Google and Facebook have seen their favorability drastically improve among consumers? In a word, it's the pandemic, according to Sebastien Houdusse, chief strategy officer of BETC Paris. As everyone isolated within their homes, technology was the thread that kept us cheerful, entertained, informed and connected, he says.A guest on this month's episode, Sebastian authored the latest edition of Havas Group's Prosumer Report. Called “Tech Forward, Why The Tech Trial Won't Happen,” the report is rooted in an expansive study of 16,000 people across 32 markets and asks whether or not these companies can maintain this newfound public support. In this episode, we take a deep dive into the implications of this report and what it all means for consumers, with a discussion moderated by Red Havas' Pattie Sullivan, joined by Sebastien and Jeremy Dale, CMO of Likewize. “We were actually very surprised by the data at first,” says Sebastien. “But when you think about it, Big Tech actually helped us amid the pandemic to stay connected with our loved ones, to stay entertained, and to continue to work, shop, teach, and learn. At a time where some governments were seen as failing, trust in tech was rising. We already knew that tech was useful in our daily life. But thanks to the pandemic, we realized that we couldn't live without it.” Says Jeremy, “We know we're living in the fourth industrial revolution, where the speed of change is like nothing we've ever seen before. The pandemic has just accelerated that change even more, and I don't think we will ever entirely go back to the way we were before.”While it may seem that we have become overly reliant on technology, consumers have widely expressed that tech innovations have improved their lives. Regardless, many consumers insist on holding tech companies accountable for the collateral damage they cause.“80 percent of our prosumer sample think that tech giants have acquired too much power in our society,” says Sebastien. “They say these companies should treat their employees better, should support local businesses in the countries they are settled in, and should practice sustainability.”The episode wraps with Red Havas VP Ellen Mallernee Barnes firing off a new set of questions for Red Questionnaire guest Nigel Hughes, managing director at Red Havas UK. Their conversation covers a myriad of topics from current guilty pleasure (The royal family) to how he describes his job to his own family (it's not so easy!) to the book he's currently rereading (“The Fame Formula: How Hollywood's Fixers, Fakers And Star Makers Created The Celebrity Industry").The latter traces the origins of the public relations industry, men who stepped out of the circus life carrying the legacy of P.T. Barnum and applied it liberally to vaudeville and the movies. Says Nigel, “If you tell somebody they can't do it, they'll want to do it. For publicists, that's one of the oldest tricks in the books.”Give “Red Sky Fuel for Thought” a listen, and subscribe to the show on iTunes, Spotify or your favorite podcasting app. Don't forget to rate and review to help more people find us!Connect with Red Havas: Also mentioned on this episode:· Sodajerker On Songwriting· The Fame Formula· Lack of lorry drivers in UK leads to empty shelves and uncertain futures· Piers Morgan and Louis Theroux lead celebrations as Emma Raducanu wins US open: ‘Pure class' Follow Red Havas for a daily dose of comms news:· Twitter· Facebook· Instagram· LinkedIn Subscribe:Don't forget to subscribe to the show using your favorite podcasting app.· iTunes· Spotify What did you love? This week’s guest is Jeremy Dale, one of the original co-founders of the OTRO the football media platform, who has had a marketing career working for some of the world’s most famous companies. He was former VP of Worldwide retail for Microsoft, won a BAFTA for the launch of Pokemon and led Motorola’s Product (RED) Campaign in collaboration with Oprah and Bono, the latter of whom he claims gave him the inspiration for his new book, The Punk Rock of Business. Jeremy was listed in Total Films 100 Most Influential People in the Movies (between Tom Cruise and Matt Damon), not bad for someone who started as an accountant for Tarmac.
The technology revolution has changed everything around us. In a world full of many levels of disruption we cannot apply old ways to think and feel and operate at work. We need new mindsets and frameworks to work together. The idea came up from working with Bono (U2) when building the Red products with Motorola and Bono.It is a great framework for thinking about the new world we are facing with a population hoping, expecting and open to very new ways of working. This mentality exudes self-confidence and curiosity because a great deal of the knowledge we need is available online. The Punk rock mentality best illustrates this as the movement called into questions assumptions around how music should be created. Through a set of stories from Bono and the Red program for solving AIDS in Africa Jeremy talks about parts of the eight principles of Punk Rock that are needed in today and tomorrows world.

Jeremy Dale is co-founder of OTRO, former VP of Worldwide retail for Microsoft and led Motorola's Product (RED) Campaign in collaboration with Oprah and Bono. Dale is the punk rocker of business a name he earned from Bono for his efforts at Motorola. We discuss how to take non reckless risks, why companies are killing great ideas with endless bureaucracy, and why having a cause will define your business success. (And how to do it right)
“Marketing is the balance of the irrational and the rational.” Someone that would utter this truth would naturally have some ideas that are out of the box. Drawing on his career at Microsoft and Motorola, Jeremy Dale has gathered stories on what makes a standout business — from authenticity to causes — in his new book The Punk Rock of Business. We discussed all of this and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Jeremy Dale Jeremy Dale is the author of The Punk Rock of Business: Applying a Punk Rock Attitude in the Modern Business Era. He has over 20 years' experience in the Consumer Electronics industry, and until 2017 he was Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's worldwide retail channel. Prior to that, he was CMO at Motorola during the RAZR heyday. Jeremy is now CEO of an exciting start-up business in the global football and entertainment sector where he is applying his philosophy. Jeremy owns a BAFTA for the launch of Pokemon, he was named 35th in the UK's Marketing Power 100, and he was listed in Total Films 100 Most Influential People in the Movies (between Tom Cruise and Matt Damon). Jeremy rarely admits that he trained as an accountant before expanding into sales, marketing and business leadership. Jeremy loves all sports. Episode Highlights Why punk? “Too often people in business are concerned with conservatism. Those in the punk movement were the real entrepreneurs. They redefined everything.” Redefining at a time of redefinition. "The age that we're in now — the fourth industrial revolution — is exciting but it can be scary as well.” First, causes are key. You have to know what you stand for. Jeremy shared his experience at Microsoft. "It was all about people reaching their potential. That can be your north star in everything.” “I always aim for being remarkable.” Remarkable is a magic word. It’s doing something so amazing that people have to remark on it. Elvis was right. “Look after your fans and the rest will take care of itself.” Once again, words matter. Fan culture helps us amplify our traditional relationships with our customers. What brand has made Jeremy smile recently? Jeremy shared a story about a conductor on Southwest Trains in the UK that added some much-needed levity to a recent trip. If Jeremy Dale hadn’t spent the last eight years as a vice president of Microsoft Corp., people might dismiss his new book, The Punk Rock of Business: Applying a Punk Rock Attitude in the Modern Business Era, as a flight of fancy. But Punk Rock and successful businesses have much more in common than you might imagine, starting with authenticity and a refusal to conform. Coincidentally, Jeremy’s interview from London with host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart comes on the very day that Jeremy is officially launching his latest venture – Otro, a global digital club for soccer fans that is designed from the ground up to be a Punk Rock business. It's the return of everyone's favorite Helsinki native, Sampsa Granstrom, back to talk more comics! Sampsa and Wendi discuss what they're reading and watching lately (She Hulk, Gotham Academy, Batgirl, Wicked and Divine and more), discuss the merits of limited series, and then get into some reviews. They discuss 3 books from Steve Niles' new imprint, Black Mask Studios. "Critical Hit" (Matt Miner, Jonathan Brandon Sawyer), "Pirhouette" (Mark Miller, Carlos Granda) and "Last Born" (Patrick Meaney, Eric Zawadzki). Upon typing this, Wendi now realizes that is Mark MILLER, not MILLAR and feels kinda silly. They also dissect "World War Kaiju" from 01 Publishing, written by Josh Finney, art by Patrick McEvoy. Wendi absolutely despised one of these books and very much loved another, so listen to find out! And please consider contributing to the fund for our late friend, Jeremy Dale, to help his family cover funeral expenses. www.gofundme.com/jeremydale
