JJ Williams is the third-generation of his family in the wine business out of Red Mountain – one of the world’s premier viticultural areas outside of Richland, WA. But before the wine business, his family first put down roots in the Mid-Columbia region to work at Hanford. During the Manhattan Project, Williams’s great grandfather worked at the site, and then his grandfather worked on what’s called the Fast Flux Test Facility. It’s September now and crush is on – meaning that all the grapes are coming in to be pressed and fermented into wine. Williams recently got the distinction of being named in Wine Enthusiast’s 40 under 40. We sit down with him in our remote studio on the campus of Washington State University Tri-Cities.

In this episode we interview longtime Background Investigation Division supervisor JJ Williams who witnessed the downfall of LAPD hiring over 20 years. He retired in 2022. We're publishing it as a special episode for the podcast.  In August 2022, the LAPD chief reported that the department was unable to hire the promised number of recruits in hiring year 2021-2022. The recruitment numbers continue to fall in hiring year 2022-2023. The LAPD had 10,000 officers in 2013. They now have 9250 officers. The department is unable to stem the flow of officers leaving the department and can't hire enough to make up for their losses. A very fruit forward wine but with this wonderful savory component making it complex but still approachable You can purchase the 2015 which is the current release here   Mansion Creek Cellars VIÑA ESPAÑOLA 2014 - priced around $37. This wine is a blend of Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Counoise  Nose: Black fruit and cedar It’s dry, full bodied, medium acidity and tannins with flavors of black plum, basamic, black olives, mushrooms and a hint of spice on the finish. Very unique blend, less fruit driven and more savory which is not what we expected You can purchase this wine here   Mansion Creek Cellars Red Dog 2015 - priced around $47.  A blend of 70% Tinta Cão, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Grenache-Syrah Nose is very floral with violets and rose a hint of black fruit It’s also dry, full body with medium acidity and medium plus tannins and flavors of black plum, leather and violets The texture of this wine is amazing, the tannins are very smooth and refine It's very complex and powerful in intensity but with these beautiful floral notes. We have not had a wine quite like this before, unique and special You can purchase this wine here    

I was lucky enough to watch Rhys Williams' career close up as I was at Loughborough University with him. Rhys has recently finished his career as an athlete when he hung up his spikes in June this year - but what a career it has been. The Cardiff AAC athlete and son of rugby union's JJ Williams has achieved the feat of becoming European Champion at every level from U18 through to Senior, as well as picking up the full complement of European Senior medals; beginning with a bronze in 2006, silver in 2010, before becoming European Champion in 2012. He competed for Wales at two Commonwealth Games, finishing 4th in Melbourne, and before going one better and claiming the bronze medal in 2010. He competed for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics, making the semi-final, with a semi-final place also achieved at the 2005 and 2013 World Championships. Not only has Rhys been a phenomenal athlete but also an incredible human being and I wish him all the very best for his life after the track.
