What happened to Timothy Leary? One minute, he was an anti-establishment rebel, spending ten years in prison after advocating for the "turn on, tune in, drop out" drug liberation culture of the '70s; the next, he was a government narc, informing on the same people he hooked in. One possible explanation lies in his exciting, deeply idiosyncratic relationship with Swiss-born Joanna Harcourt-Smith, the subject of Errol Morris' latest documentary My Psychedelic Love Story (which hits Showtime this weekend). Centered entirely on Harcourt-Smith's side of the story, Morris' latest doc is playful and intriguing in all the ways you'd expect of his interrogative, interview-centric approach to documentary filmmaking. It certainly helps, of course, that frequent collaborator Paul Leonard-Morgan is along for the ride, painting between the lines of Harcourt-Smith's lively, charming investigation of her own past, as much a mystery to her as it is to the audience. Was she really a CIA spy, a Mata Hari figure meant to take down one of the government's greatest counterculture nuisances? Or was she a lost, naive girl looking for the ride of a lifetime? Leonard-Morgan (no stranger to this podcast; we talked to him earlier this year about Amazon's Tales from the Loop) weaves an intricate blend of synths, driving strings, and percussion through Morris' kaleidoscopic, montage-heavy approach to Harcourt-Smith's story. Luckily, we managed to catch him in the final weeks of preparing the score to talk to us about working with Morris, the engaging mysteries of the film's subject, and the logistical complexities about recording live music during a global pandemic. Susun Weed interviews Joanna Harcourt Smith in 2014 discussing her life and her recent memoir. Joann was born in 1946 high up in a the Mountains of Switzerland. She grew up in Paris and went to school in France. She described her book "Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary" as the love of her life. It took her 30 years to digest and compost the experiences she wrote about. She lived for 40 years in the US where she has learned to love herself and others. Joanna Harcourt Smith passed away on October 11, 2020 at her home in Sante Fe, New Mexico from breast cancer. She was 74 years old.

I’m always longing for somebody I can have a good conversation with. And just doing it in prison wasn’t enough…It was impossible. And in a sense, I love that.”“They stripsearched me because I was the paramour of the good doctor. But it was clear to me that the best place to hide the drugs was my ‘innie’ belly-button. If I ever encountered compassion it was from someone who was serving these people. And I wondered why that is. And this man said to me, 'Well, you see, the very, very rich have to kill compassion in their children. Every child is born innately compassionate, but they have to kill compassion in their children so that they don't give it [great wealth] away.' I mean, how could we own most of what is if we had compassion?” “Human beings have a right to change their consciousness, and it is unconscionable and absolutely wrong for any government or any person to stand in the way of someone choosing to change their consciousness.” “Once the System has you in their clutches there are no laws.” “A lot of times myth is stronger than reality. But today's program is a little different in that instead of featuring just one speaker we have an audio collage that includes Allen Ginsberg, Ram Das, and Laura Huxley. A finer collection of psychedelic elders you would be hard-pressed to find. First of all is a rare recording of a telephone interview of Allen Ginsberg by then “High Times” editor, Peter Gorman. When Gorman asked for a story about Timothy Leary, Ginsberg tells of the time that Leary came to his New York apartment to meet Jack Kerouac and they took psilocybin together Next is a brief conversation that Peter has with Ram Das during which we learn some more of the background of the early days at Millbrook and the interesting series of events that led up to going there. The last segment is another Peter Gorman interview, this time with Laura Huxley in which she tells of some of her own experiences with LSD.
