[originally published on Patreon Today I go through the life and times of Immanuel Velikovsky, one of the most interesting figures in recent times. I discuss the importance of Freud to Velikovsky's works, and the main themes of Worlds in Collision. I discuss Einstein's relationship to Velikovsky, and Velikovsky's network of followers. While this is probably not the final word on Velikovsky, I think I come to a pretty grounded explanation of how and why the Velikovsky affair got so out of hand, and why Catastrophists and New Chronologists all seem to be spooks and occultists. He came upon his innovative thesis in retirement when he noticed anatomical "fascia" on the coverings of stones that resembled bodily organs. His radically unconventional interpretation of stones as body parts and organs of giants has been backed up, he says, by several catscans and DNA analyses. Roger has a background in chemistry, and explains his views on the complex transformations from organic flesh to hardened stone with reference to well-known chemical processes. Extraordinary photographs are presented throughout this interview. Body parts and whole creatures are exhibited. Especially abundant in his examples, Roger says, are the remains of arteries and veins, and many instances show the transformed traces of blood in iron-rich areas of the Earth's "geology". Naturally, conventional geological science entirely rejects his findings, as he entirely discounts their premises. Roger also discounts conventional and most alternative histories and archaeologies as well, asserting, for instance, that the head of the Sphinx is a real head, like other objects long understood to have been sculpted, or partially sculpted, from stone outcrops. Deriving part of his cosmic history from Immanuel Velikovsky, Roger Spurr also considers the Book of Revelations to tell of our past, not just the future, and correlates his findings with myths around the world. Gnostic views of Gaia, Jesus, and the forces of darkness also richly inform his presentation. Notwithstanding the controversial nature of his beliefs, Roger encourages research in this area and a free exchange of ideas. Roger's work can be found at Mudfossils.com, and his Youtube channel, Mudfossil University.

E7: Imre Lakatos on what persuades scientists to risk their careers

Oddly Influenced

Lakatos in a nutshellScientists join research programmes. Research programmes are characterized by a small hard core of 2-5 postulates that guide development of theories and experiments. The hard core is not questioned from within the research programme. To be progressive, a research program must produce a series of dramatic ("novel") predictions that are confirmed by experiment. This is in contrast to the mainstream account of science, which emphasizes that it's rational to believe in a theory only if its predictions are not (yet) refuted. Lakatos's argument is that real scientists don't abandon beliefs because they're refuted. Indeed, "theories grow in a sea of anomalies, and counterexamples are merrily ignored."While anomalies or counterexamples are generally shelved to deal with later, some are too telling to ignore. Scientists react by producing an protective belt of auxiliary hypotheses. Those are of two sorts:The good kind are theories in their own right that also lead to novel predictions and confirmations."ad hoc" hypotheses are those purely created to defend the research programme, to explain away counterexamples. They don't lead to useful predictions.Note that you can't tell from the outside which category a protective theory falls into. That's discovered over time. Unlike the hard core, parts of the protective belt can be dropped or replaced.A research programme is degenerating if:it does not lead to stunning new predictions (at least occasionally...);all its bold predictions are falsified; andit does not grow in steps which "follow the spirit of the programme". That most likely means that it's no longer building by finding implications of its hard core. Instead, the researchers spend their time constructing ad hoc protective theories.A research programme can recover from degenerating and become progressive again. The wikipedia article has more detail. It's pretty good as of this episode's publication date.ReferencesThe standard reference is Lakatos's Philosophical Papers, Volume 1: The Methodology of Scientific Research Programmes, 1978, Currie & Worrell (editors). I personally found a series of Lakatos's transcribed lectures more useful for this episode. They're in For and Against Method: Including Lakatos's Lectures on Scientific Method and the Lakatos-Feyerabend Correspondence, 1995, Motterlini (editor). Lakatos and Feyerabend were both friends and sparring partners with very different views about science. Unfortunately, Feyerabend didn't save most of Lakatos's letters, and Feyerabend's letters tend more toward gossip than debate about issues. It's quite a loss, given that Lakatos died young (age 51).I don't mention it in the podcast, but Lakatos's Proofs and Refutations: The Logic of Mathematical Discovery, 1976, Worrall and Zaher (editors) is a wonderful book. It's a series of fictional conversations between a teacher and his students that recapitulates the history of Euler's polyhedron formula, V-E+F=2.  As with his later Methodology did for science, Lakatos demonstrates that mathematics isn't just a steady accumulation of knowledge. Mathematicians don't just play the definition-theorem-proof game; they also use techniques like "monster barring". You'll be surprised by how entertaining it is.Immanuel Velikovsky, Worlds in Collision, (first edition, 1950). Science and Pseudoscience is based on an in-depth filmed conversation between Howard Burton and Michael Gordin, Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Princeton University. This thought-provoking, extensive conversation examines the strange case of Immanuel Velikovsky, author of the bestselling book “Worlds in Collision” that managed to provocatively combine unbridled scientific speculation with ancient myth, as a way of probing the often-problematic boundary between science and pseudoscience. By all accounts, Velikovsky was a decidedly curious character. The notorious Russian-born doctor-turned psychoanalyst-turned astronomer-historian-autodidact not only had a flair for writing and boatloads of charisma and energy, he also was on record for making a couple of concrete predictions of his radical new theory of the solar system that turned out, much to the dismay of the authorities of the day, to actually be correct. Wal Thornhill got his degree in physics from Melbourne University. He says that much of his inspiration came from Immanuel Velikovsky’s book, Worlds in Collision. Wal was invited to attend one of Velikovsky’s conferences in Ontario in 1974, and he began to question the nature of gravity. His ideas have sparked the interest of scientists, engineers, and astronomers, and I expect that they will pique the interest of our listeners, as well. Enjoy!

The 14th century B.C.E. pharaoh Akhnaten is remembered for his radical abandonment of the multiple gods of Egypt in favor of just one: the sun god Aten. Akhnaten’s heresy ended with his death when traditional beliefs were quickly reestablished and Akhnaten’s name literally chiseled out of Egyptian history. Sigmund Freud’s “Moses and Monotheism” opined that Moses might have been an Egyptian priest of Akhnaten, and Immanuel Velikovsky, a once-popular but fanciful historian, suggested in his book “Oedipus and Akhnaton,” that a garbled memory of Akhnaten’s reign was the source of the Greek tragedy “Oedipus the King.” The American composer Philip Glass credits both those authors among the inspirations for his opera “Akhnaten,” which premiered on today’s date in 1984 at the Staatstheaer in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1984, the Stuttgart opera was undergoing renovations, so the premiere was moved to a much smaller hall, with a much smaller orchestra pit. Rather than scrimp on other instruments, Philip Glass simply made a virtue of necessity and omitted the entire violin section from his score. The role of Akhnaten is sung by a counter-tenor, whose high voice provides a striking contrast to the a low, dark timbre of the Glass’s violin-less orchestration.

Dr. Heather Lynn – The Anunnaki Connection: Sumerian Gods, Alien DNA & The Fate of HumanityAired Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM ESTRegular listeners to Destination Unlimited have heard me discuss my childhood in the 1950’s and 60’s and my fascination with both science and spirituality. When I was thirteen, an uncle, who was also a mystic, gave me a copy of a book entitled, Worlds in Collision. Written by independent scholar and psychoanalyst, Immanuel Velikovsky, the book, based upon comparative mythology, postulated that around 1500 BCE the planet that we know as Venus was ejected from Jupiter as a comet like object. Transiting close to Earth, he speculated that it affected our world’s axis and orbit, resulting in the catastrophes documented in early mythologies and religions. His thesis was rejected by the scientific community but led to a fascination with what actually happened that caused disparate cultures from around the world to share stories with common themes. In 1976, Zecharia Sitchin published a book entitled The 12th Planet, the first in a series of books sharing his thesis that human origins were the result of “ancient astronauts” visiting the earth. He attributed the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the Anunnaki, a race of extraterrestrials from a planet beyond Neptune called Nibiru. His work was based upon interpretations of Sumerian texts and also comparative mythology. His work was also criticized by main street science, especially astronomers, until his death in 2010. In 2016, The American Astronomical Society published a study in its journal that there may just be a distant “giant” planet in the Kuiper Belt that would make it the ninth planet. Could this correspond with the planet in Sitchin’s theory? Might there be some truth in his thesis that would explain the similarities in ancient myths?Returning to join me on Destination Unlimited this week is author, historian, and renegade archaeologist, Dr. Heather Lynn. A professor of humanities by day and ardent truth-seeker by night, Heather is on a mission to uncover and share the lost wisdom of antiquity, challenging the accepted narrative found in our history books. Author of multiple books and articles on fringe topics ranging from history to philosophy, Heather’s research includes hidden history, ancient mysteries, mythology, the occult, symbolism, paleocontact, and consciousness. We start a new deep dive into another book, Immanuel Velikovsky's Earth in Upheaval. Unlike his earlier, very controversial book "Worlds in Collision", which sought to tie ancient myth and legend together with ancient texts and oral traditions found around the world into a coherent narrative of global cataclysm, Upheaval has no myth, no legend, no lore. Instead, it is packed full of geological observations by some of the world's most renowned scientists and geologists. It paints a clear picture of a catastrophic past that is written into every feature of the planet. This is the first of a series of episodes where we will be focusing on the material in this excellent book. Also, we tried a little experiment with this episode....we streamed the audio of the show live to our Discord chat members, who got to hear some of the inside baseball of producing the podcast, and of course the banter between the breaks. The irrational response of American astronomers resulting in a modern-day ‘book burning’ taught him to be skeptical of expert opinions. Wal has achieved a broad synthesis of ideas he calls ‘THE ELECTRIC UNIVERSE,’ in collaboration with David Talbott. It was first presented at a world conference in Portland, Oregon, on January 1997. [This is a slightly edited repost of an essay from my old LiveJournal] A friend recently complained about how many people lack the basic skill of believing arguments. That is, if you have a valid argument for something, then you should accept the conclusion. Even if the conclusion is unpopular, or inconvenient, or you don’t like it. He envisioned an art of rationality that would make people believe something after it had been proven to them. And I nodded my head, because it sounded reasonable enough, and it wasn’t until a few hours later that I thought about it again and went “Wait, no, that would be a terrible idea.” I don’t think I’m overselling myself too much to expect that I could argue circles around the average uneducated person. Like I mean that on most topics, I could demolish their position and make them look like an idiot. Reduce them to some form of “Look, everything you say fits together and I can’t explain why you’re wrong, I just know you are!” Or, more plausibly, “Shut up I don’t want to talk about this!” And there are people who can argue circles around me. Maybe not on every topic, but on topics where they are experts and have spent their whole lives honing their arguments. When I was young I used to read pseudohistory books; Immanuel Velikovsky’s Ages in Chaos is a good example of the best this genre has to offer. I read it and it seemed so obviously correct, so perfect, that I could barely bring myself to bother to search out rebuttals. And then I read the rebuttals, and they were so obviously correct, so devastating, that I couldn’t believe I had ever been so dumb as to believe Velikovsky. And then I read the rebuttals to the rebuttals, and they were so obviously correct that I felt silly for ever doubting.

Join Greg Carlwood of The Higherside Chats as he talks about the advanced knowledge of the Dogon Tribe of Africa, the work of Immanuel Velikovsky, and comparative cosmology with guest, Laird Scranton. We've seen enough from mainstream academia to know their interest lies not in the pursuit of knowledge wherever it leads, but rather in the preservation of pre-approved paradigms with a variety of so-called experts in place to thoroughly shut down any wild theories, healthy speculation, or god forbid actual evidence that suggests these narrow views must be widened. Whether we're discussing the advanced cosmology of an African tribe that rivals modern science, or complex mythologies from the past about our solar system that defy everything NASA says it knows, we find, through the grace of alternative researchers, that the official answers are deeply and purposefully flawed. 4:30 Made popular by the work of Robert Temple and Carl Sagan, the Dogon Tribe of Africa is a modern-day primitive tribe that acts as a great entry point to the study of ancient African cultures and ancient creation mysteries. With ritual practices similar to Judaism, cultural civic practices like those in ancient Egypt, and a symbolic system of cosmology similar to ancient Buddhism, their culture serves as an umbrella, or a cross-roads for several different ancient traditions. 14:20 As an English major and a software engineer, Laird's linguistic and symbolic perspectives were critical tools in helping him unravel the Dogon systems. As a researcher in the field of comparative cosmology, his focus is comparing how different ancient cultures understand the same symbolic concept or myth. One advantage in the way the Dogon system has been established, is that words don't carry just one meaning, instead they carry multiple meanings. In the ancient mindset, when talking about processes of creation, they are essentially talking about three things simultaneously, which are how the universe formed, how matter forms, and how the reproduction process works. These three processes are seen to be so fundamentally similar to each other that they use a single progression of symbols to simultaneously describe all three. 22:30 Continuing on with the discussion about the change in the length of the calendar year, Greg and Laird discuss the possibility of a more sinister plot afoot. Laird contends there was a physical change on Earth that effected the length of the year around that time. He corroborates his stance with supporting evidence including the tracking of solar eclipses dating back to 709 b.c. that conflict with credible sources citing cosmic events with contradicting dates. Other interesting pieces of evidence to support the theory that a major event on Earth occurred are the sudden unexplained change at the rate in which plants absorb ions, major dramatic climate change the affected agriculture, and evidence of major volcanic eruptions. 32:30 Because of the huge gap in knowledge from when events occurred and when they were recorded, finding a line of continuity can be a bit tricky. As Laird points out, in his book "Point of Origin" the use of various facets of language, and symbols found throughout other ancient cultures played a key role in his research of the ancient Turkish site Gobekli Tepe. 41:45 Imparting relevant knowledge to the Dogon tribe about agriculture and the structure of reality is understandably justified. Greg and Laird peel back the onion of outer space and explore the incentive to educate the Dogon on the Sirius constellations. A parallelism between the three symbolic processes of creation includes the egg. Following this idea, Laird walk us through the macro and microcosm vortices that correlate to one another and serve as the Dogon's explanation for the creation of the universe. 56:10 After expressing such an interest in cosmologies and the mindset of ancient cultures, Greg and Laird discuss the possibility of going down the...

Surrounded by controversy even before its publication in 1950, Immanuel Velikovsky’s Worlds in Collisionintroduced the provocative theory that Venus began as a brilliant comet ejected by Jupiter around 1600 BCE, wreaking chaos on Mars and Earth as it roamed through our solar system prior to settling into its current orbit. Immediately dismissed without any investigation and subject to vicious attacks, Velikovsky’s theory is now poised for reexamination in light of recent astronomical and archaeological findings. Exploring the key points of Velikovsky’s theories, Laird Scranton presents evidence from recent space probe missions to show that Venus still exhibits cometlike properties, such as its atmospheric composition, and could be a young planet. Reviewing the widespread cometlike descriptions of Venus from 1500 BCE to 750 BCE as well as Velikovsky’s observation that no records of Venus exist prior to 1600 BCE, Scranton reveals recently translated ancient texts from China, Korea, and Japan that further uphold Velikovsky’s theories. Examining evidence of major geomagnetic and climate-change events around 1500 BCE and 750 BCE, corresponding with close passes of the comet Venus and its impact with Mars, the author offers scientific explanations for many disputed aspects of Velikovsky’s theories, such as how Venus transformed from a comet into an orbiting planet. By updating this unresolved controversy with new scientific evidence, Scranton helps us to understand how it was that Worlds in Collision was the one book found open on Albert Einstein’s desk at the time of his death.Laird Scranton,  an independent software designer, has studied ancient myth, language, and cosmology since 1997. The author of several books, including The Science of the Dogon, he has been a lecturer at Colgate University and lives in Albany, New York.

Focusing on Cold War America from the late 1940s to the late 1970s, The Pseudo-Science Wars: Immanuel Velikovsky and the Birth of the Modern Fringe (University of Chicago Press, 2012) traces the transformations of science at the margins that were stimulated by Immanuel Velikovsky, “the first grand wizard of the Universal Order of Mass Pseudo-Scholarship” and a Russian-born psychoanalyst whose Worlds in Collision triggered an epistemic avalanche among members of the American scientific community. Gordin tracks the surprising relationships of Velikovsky and his work, from Zionism to Creationism, and from Freud to Einstein. It becomes a story of competing attitudes toward historical evidence, as the scientific orthodoxy reacted to threats from the margins and those on the margins sought to preserve their own orthodoxy on the fringes. Gordin’s book is a multi-layered modern history of problem of scientific demarcation as well as a fascinating read. Host: Chris Mooney Before the "complementary and alternative medicine" fad, and before UFO craze, lived a man whom you might call the first modern pseudoscientist. His name was Immanuel Velikovsky. He had a strange theory about a comet—that turned out to be Venus—shaping the course of human history. He tangled with Carl Sagan about it—and with the scientific community about it. And then, he was mostly forgotten. But no longer, because Princeton historian of science Michael Gordin has tracked down Velikovsky's personal papers. In his book The Pseudoscience Wars: Immanuel Velikovsky and the Birth of the Modern Fringe, Gordin uses Velikovsky's example to show how he laid the groundwork for other pseudosciences-it's kind of like they followed in his footsteps. Michael Gordin is professor of history at Princeton University and director of the program in Russian and Eurasian Studies. He has written widely in the history of science with a focus on the Soviet Union and the early nuclear age. The Pseudoscience Wars is his fourth book.

Episode 4. Michael Tsarion talks about the occult history of Ireland. Born in Ireland Michael Tsarion, an expert on the occult histories of Ireland and America, has made the deepest researches into the comparative mythologies of the world and into his own country's ancient and mysterious Celtic Tradition. His presentations on Atlantis and the origins of evil have been acclaimed by veterans in the field of paranormal research. In the tradition of Comyns Beaumont, Ignatius Donnelly, Immanuel Velikovsky, William Bramley and Erich von Daniken, Michael considers the consequences to civilization of extra-terrestrial involvement and seeks to clarify many of the quandaries that other "visitation" experts have overlooked. He also looks at the orchestrated chaos of modern times and reveals how the political and military machinations of the present have their roots in the ancient past. As well as stating the problems, Michael also furnishes us with solutions to the moral and social predicaments that have beset humankind for millennia. Lois Schadewald's interest in both science and pseudoscience rubbed off on her from her brilliant brother Robert J. Schadewald, a prolific author and debater. When Bob died a decade ago he left behind a legacy of published essays and book chapters, as well as much unpublished material including a complete manuscript on the history of the Flat Earth movement. Lois has seen to the publication of many of these pieces in the collection Worlds of their Own: A Brief History of Misguided Ideas; Creationism, Flat-Earthism, Energy Scams, and the Velikovsky Affair. In this episode of Point of Inquiry, Robert M. Price asks Lois to outline some of her brother's research in Flat Earth and Hollow Earth "science" as well as to relate some stories of his association with important "alternative science" figures like catastrophist Immanuel Velikovsky. Schadewald talks about her brother's unique approach to dealing with promoters of pseudoscience, and what he gained from it. She discusses the timeline of Bob's research interests and how he eventually made his way to studying creationism.   Lois Schadewald is Professor of Chemistry at Normandale Community College in Minnesota, where she is also active with the Minnesota Atheists.   Robert J. Schadewald (1943-2000) was a widely published science writer. His articles dealing with unorthodoxies of science and scholarship appeared in Science 80, Smithsonian, Technology Illustrated, and Skeptical Inquirer among others. He was a contributing author to six books, including The History of Science and Religion in the Western Tradition: An Encyclopedia (Garland Publishing, 2000). From 1986 until the mid-1990s, he served on the board of directors of the National Center for Science Education, including two years as president. He attended seven national creationism conferences, interviewed Immanuel Velikovsky, investigated perpetual motion machines, and was thrown out of the Flat Earth Society for having spherical tendencies. Bob was nationally recognized as an expert on creationism, perpetual motion, and flat Earthism.
