Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2022 50:37

Ready to shine a light on the ultimate rock'n'roll band? Well, break out the cheap stuff and get those taxes in order because Now Hear This is taking a journey into the depraved south of France to deep dive into the Rolling Stones atmospheric masterpiece: Exile On Main Street. This torn and frayed offering of drunken stomps and trademark Jagger/Richards balls-out fury is held in high esteem by most...but has it always been that way? To answer that question, Paul is joined by the incomparable musician/singer/songwriter Luther Russell (Those Pretty Wrongs, The Bootheels) to uncover the history behind this iconic album, and get some rocks off in the process. LEGENDARY ARTIST RUBY MAZUR SIGNS WITH COSMIC WIRE FOR DEBUT CANVAS & NFT GALLERY, A 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF HIS FAMOUS ‘MOUTH & TONGUE' FROM THE ROLLING STONES' ‘TUMBLING DICE' RECORD SLEEVE! Culture-shifting painter, Ruby Mazur, is revisiting his iconic 1971 ‘Mouth & Tongue' symbol from The Rolling Stones' ‘Tumbling Dice' record sleeve to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its creation. Ruby will show 13 derivative pieces of the ‘Mouth & Tongue' that continue to embody the spirit of rock n' roll at the Holle Fine Arts Gallery on Maui in collaboration with Cosmic Wire; a cutting edge and revolutionary hybrid art exhibit displaying both digital NFTs and physical canvas of the works. Adding to the immersive gallery experience on July 2nd will be a new experience, with live music by Falling Doves and a surprise NFT for event patrons as they mingle with Ruby and other influencers from the island. A percentage of the NFT proceeds go to LET ME HELP, a New York based charity in support of The American Cancer Society, Anti-Bullying, Broadway Heros, Covid-19 Relief and Prostate Cancer. Ever since earning a Grammy nomination for designing the ‘CrowFoot' album art in the 1960's, Ruby Mazur has been asked to illustrate and communicate the musical message of the world's most famous performers. Capturing pivotal moments and cementing trends, Ruby has worked on over 3,000 album covers for artists like Elton John, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughn, Van Morrison, Jim Croce, Jimmy Buffet and B.B. King or with record labels like Paramount, Atlantic, and Warner Bros. The paintings and works are inspired by Ruby's outrageous rock n' roll days and his second life in Maui, conveying the wild and dynamic music scene with the humility of the island way of life. “Going digital with Cosmic Wire on my paintings with these new NFTs is like the “Old World” going into the new frontier of the “New World” of Art” commented Ruby, “This is an exciting new experience, merging both worlds where I can dip my brush into paint with one stroke and it goes almost instantly around the world.” Futurist publishing and technology company, Cosmic Wire, specializes in protecting and monetizing the world's most valuable IP, traversing the now trillion dollar blockchain industry since its 300% market increase from 2019-2020. Understanding the potential of NFTs to enable artists to sell and own their work directly, Cosmic Wire is focused on fair agreements, direct rewards, and downstream residuals and payments via their proprietary Licensing and Publishing model. The artworks will be authenticated and protected using proprietary and unique technology from Cosmic Wire partners, REV3AL Technology and NCODED, disruptive multi-factor authentication and encryption technology that shows the authentic creation of the work and protects it from being counterfeited in the digital space. The holistic multi-media company will be producing and publishing a number of exciting projects over the coming months while also founding a clean energy solution specifically focused on the environmental impact of the crypto industry and secure digital archive to protect humanity's most valuable artistic assets. One of the most enigmatic individuals (or groups?) within the electronic scene, Traumprinz has amassed one of the most dedicated legions of fans in the game. The catch? Allie is joined by Jochem to discuss the German electronic label, Giegling. It’s difficult to put into words the emotions thread together throughout their releases. For one of the label’s founders, Konstantin, when trying to describe this evocative feeling, he notes: “It's a resonance of being…of being in a certain time, with certain people. It's something immaterial, but something true, something worth living for.” Listen to hear our favorite tracks, and a few of our favorite mixes/sets are in the show notes. Opening Monologues. The Excruciating MSM Holding Pattern. Downbeat Democrats pinned between the desolate Mueller Summary and the pending release of the fuller Mueller Report. At the moment, they have nothing to go on. Thus they watch helplessly as they lose control of The Narrative and further brace themselves for Devin Nunes' upcoming criminal referrals. Meanwhile, Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announces her departure from the Department of Homeland Security. President Trump, planning a "tougher direction" on border security, asked today for Nielsen's resignation. We sample Trump's commentary on border issues from his Friday speech in Las Vegas, after having visited the wall near Calexico, California. Lieutenant General Todd Semonite, chief of the Army Corps of Engineers, describes progress and plans for the construction of 450 miles of new border wall by December 2020. We outline Trump's sterling maneuver to install 750 more border agents at ports of entry, a mechanism for snarling border traffic at the direct expense of Mexico. De facto border closure? The Great Avocado Crisis. Plus, we review nice new numbers from the growing MAGA Economy as Trump hits 51% approvals. Lowest unemployment in 50 years and continued solid wage growth for the Middle Class. Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zHvJTDgPM8 In this lesson, I bring to Dan my Epiphone ES-335 Pro with its upgraded pedals (courtesy of Pedro Martins - Brighton Guitar Repairs, https://guitarrepairsbrighton.com/), my PRS and my pedalboard. I spent quite a lot of this lesson without the camera rolling looking at these pedals and checking out my Gibson J45 which Pedro has also done an excellent job of setting up. We then set the camera rolling, which is a new video camera that I hope will improve the quality of the picture, and I ask Dan to go through some of the sounds which I should be aiming for in an upcoming gig my band and I are doing for my friend's 50th birthday. As always, much of what Dan tells me is stuffed with loads of gems and nuggets and a lot of the general rationale behind music over time and a consideration of what was available then. At just before 36 mins in, we swap my PRS for my Epiphone ES-335 with the Iron Gear Blues Engines (http://www.irongear.co.uk/irongear_pickups_006.htm). Dan gives it a go, but unhelpfully it's in Open G for my Stones parts. I show Dan what I do for Tumbling Dice and Jumpin Jack Flash and we look at the sound which the new pickups give it - pretty much straight away gaining a good tone for those songs. While Dan explains about effects and technologies over time I re-tune the guitar to standard tuning and finally Dan gives it a proper play to hear the different sounds available to it. It seems like a very impressive improvement to this guitar and I couldn't recommend Pedro Martins' work strongly enough. All the best, Dan and Gary https://tunein-toneup.com/ https://soundcloud.com/tunein-toneup

This episode’s guest is Kyle Simenson, a marketing consultant who noted that ‘When marketing is good, you can’t see it.’ His comment instantly brought questions of malevolent and benevolent use of marketing data along with intention and the lines marketers draw when considering the uses of behavioral sciences. Kyle’s work in digital strategy is particularly relevant in a world where big data can generate highly-tailored messages and can incorporate nudges that appeal to the unconscious mind of the customers. We talked about, on some levels, marketing is entirely behavioral. POC and SEM. Automation tools that observe the dynamics of human behavior. We discussed books from “Predictably Irrational” to the “Undoing Project” to Tim Ferriss’ book, “Tribe of Mentors” and they inspire Kyle to deliver insights to his clients. Our conversation also uncovered that Kyle is a not-so-in-the-closet Rolling Stones fan and “Tumbling Dice” would be his theme song. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it.

Since I've now reached show #11, I thought that I'd better introduce a little more order into the show. Therefore, I have now divided the show into several sections: Rumblings - I discuss anything that has recently caught my attention in the world of boardgames and miniature wargames. Boardgame Ballyhoo - I review a boardgame that I have recently played Wargames Rules Ruminations - I review one or more sets of rules for wargaming with miniatures. This is usually themed for a particular period/genre each week. Musings about Miniatures - I review a range of figures. These are usually figures that can be used with the rules reviewed in the 'Ruminations' section of the show.   In this, episode 11 of the Meeples & Miniatures podcast, the main topic is wargaming the Vietnam war. I discuss two rulesets for gaming the conflict: "Charlie Company" & "FNG", and then review what miniatures can be used to game this conflict in 28mm.   The Show: 00:00 - Intro 02:00 - Rumblings. This week I discuss news of releases from North Star, HLBS, Tumbling Dice and Hasslefree. 08:00 - Boardgame Ballyhoo. This time, I review the boardgame 'Hive'. 12:25 - Wargames Rules Ruminations. Review of rules for wargaming Vietnam with miniatures. 13:40 - Review of 'Charlie Company' by RAFM 25:25 - Review of 'FNG' by Two Hour Wargames 43:40 - Musings about Miniatures. 28mm figures and vehicles for gaming Vietnam. 64:00 - Closing comments   I hope that you find the show useful, informative and entertaining.
