This month's commentary podcast has Bruce and Alex ripping through Cubanate's unrelenting "Cyberia", a combination of industrial guitars and contemporary electronic production that's just as furious and engaging as it was in 1994. We're talking Phil Barry's guitar technique, the holy terror of Marc Heal's voice, and how the record manages to deliver a constant stream of tight club tracks while never falling prey to the chaos it rides the edge of.
Balkan Cyberia: Cold War Computing, Bulgarian Modernisation, and the Information Age Behind the Iron Curtain (MIT Press, 2023) examines the history of the computer industry in socialist Bulgaria. Combining the histories of technology and political economy with that of the Cold War and the modern Balkans, Balkan Cyberia challenges the notions of backwardness, the importance of small states in large geopolitical systems, the nature of the Iron Curtain, and the concept of 1989 as a convenient end-point in the history of communism. By drawing on Bulgarian, Indian, and Russian archives, as well as a range of interviews, this work reveals how a small Balkan state used its unique advantages to gain major markets, and in the process transform its political thinking. A local and a global story at the same time, the story of the Bulgarian computer offers unique insights into the history of the twentieth century information age. Max Pearson presents a collection of this week's Witness History episodes from the BBC World Service. We hear about Cyberia - the first commercial internet café which opened in London in 1994. Director of the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford, Professor Vicki Nash, talks us through other notable landmarks in the internet's history. Plus how the Covid N95 mask was invented by a scientist from Taiwan in 1992.Also how Brazilian theologian Leonardo Boff was punished for his writing on liberation theology. Staying with Brazil, we hear how poor rural workers occupied land owned by the rich, resulting in violent clashes in 1980.And the world's first global seed vault, buried deep inside a mountain on an Arctic island.Contributors: Eva Pascoe – a founder of Cyberia internet café Prof Vicki Nash – Director of the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford Peter Tsai – inventor of N95 mask Leonardo Boff – Brazilian theologian Maria Salete Campigotto – Landless Workers Movement protestor Dr Cary Fowler – founder of Doomsday seed vault(Photo: People using Cyberia in 1994. We chat with Eva Pascoe, co-founder of Cyberia, Britain's first internet cafe. We explore the birth of Cyberia, a 1994 innovation that transformed the digital world. Cyberia wasn't just a tech hub; it was a hotspot for celebrities like David Bowie, Kylie Minogue and Mick Jagger, and it was famed for their Sunday morning post-rave LAN parties and gaming basement. 22 Ideas About The Future: https://tinyurl.com/yb8ayc8z CybrSalon Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@CybrSalon/videos Please visit our amazing sponsors and help to support the show: Bitmap Books https://www.bitmapbooks.com/ Check out PCBWay at https://pcbway.com for all your PCB needs Thanks to our latest Patreon backers, in the Hall of Fame this week: Just Great Ideas Today, Dylan Sainsbury, John Lundy We need your help to ensure the future of the podcast, if you'd like to help us with running costs, equipment and hosting, please consider supporting us on Patreon: https://theretrohour.com/support/ https://www.patreon.com/retrohour Get your Retro Hour merchandise: https://bit.ly/33OWBKd Join our Discord channel: https://discord.gg/GQw8qp8 Website: http://theretrohour.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theretrohour/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/retrohouruk Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/retrohouruk/ Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/theretrohour Upcoming events we'll be at: Retro Messa: https://retromessa.no/en/ Amiga38 Germany - https://www.amigaevent.de/WB.html Show notes: Gex is back: https://tinyurl.com/2s35jwy8 Antstream coming to XBox: https://tinyurl.com/2z23z79z Funfair Inc for Commodore 64: https://tinyurl.com/4sphkajc Burn Master, Game Boy cart reader/writer: https://tinyurl.com/4etffk86

You Bought It You Name It .

Here we are in 2022 navigating cancel culture, Brexit, identity politics, war in Europe. How did we get here? Did we miss something? Robert Carlyle, who played the wildcard Begbie in the '90s hit Trainspotting, is here to show us that we did. That the world we live in was shaped by the forgotten decade: the 1990s. From Hong Kong to Moscow, Cool Britannia to No Frills flights, we travel back in time to key moments in the '90s that reverberate today in unexpected ways. Episode 4: Internet As a new bill goes through parliament that hopes to ensure online safety, Robert Carlyle takes us back to a time when the internet seemed like a force for good, an online utopia where friends could re-unite. But, as he reminds us, the 90s was also the decade that witnessed the first prosecution for cyberstalking and when the term trolling was coined. Professors Helen McCarthy and John Naughton take us back to the days of AltaVista, Ask Jeeves and the cyber-cafe. We hear from Keith Teare, one of the people behind the world's first cyber-cafe called Cyberia, who explains why they never made a profit, despite having coffee shops across the world and online dating site. Producer: Stephen Hughes Sound Designer/Composer: Phil Channell Consultant: Professor Helen McCarthy
This is a preview of a bonus episode. To listen to the entire episode, subscribe at : www.patreon.com/10kpostspodcast. ----more---- This week we're going back to Cyberia to talk about Lain's current adventures. In "Infonography", The God of the Wired explains more about Lain's purpose in the Wired, suggesting that she is simply a conduit to his rule over the world (women once again doing emotional labour!). We also find out how Lain exists as "software" and in that way, she is designed to constantly be posting and making people mad for reasons they don't quite understand. Also the weird alien shows up again and it's never explained. Great!
The Tony Award-Winning SAN FRANCISCO MIME TROUPE Debuts a NEW Activist Adaptation of the Dickens Classic as a Radio Play A RED CAROL An Activist Adaptation of the Dickens Classic Written and Directed by Michael Gene Sullivan Begins streaming FREE on Fri. Nov. 26, 2021 - Jan. 9, 2022 (donations accepted) For the first time the SF Mime Troupe presents a Holiday Audio offering with a worker's take on the Dicken's classic in A Red Carol. With its particular blend of activism, comedy, music, and passion the SFMT's labor-oriented adaptation of Dickens "A Christmas Carol” reclaims this revolutionary classic as a story not of the redemption of one bad man, but as the never-ending story of all of us making the world a more progressive place. In A Red Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a corporate banker, busy foreclosing on the hapless masses. Bob Cratchit and his beleaguered family live in a chilly tent in an anonymous homeless encampment. The ghost of Christmas future sports a flowing black robe of taped-together trash bags and plastic sheeting. Tiny Tim dies. At least that's how the SF Mime Troupe's resident playwright, Michael Gene Sullivan, has reimagined A Red Carol for the troubled 21st century. A Christmas Carol” has become “the closest thing to a modern myth that we have. It wasn't much of a stretch to place Charles Dickens' Victorian classic into today's Covid-19 world. And that, as Sullivan would be the first to tell you, is exactly the point. Dickens' novella was written in the heart of the “Hungry '40s,” a time of labor unrest, unemployment and starvation across 19th-century Europe. The gap between rich and poor was wide - and getting ever wider. With the limited release of A Red Carol, the San Francisco Mime Troupe hopes it will become an annual alternative holiday tradition for the workers of the world. For more information visit www.sfmt.org or call 415-285-1717. CRITICS SAY “The play, in its skewering of America's social ills—racism, corporate greed, the plight of the working class—is so funny, and so well acted by the Troupe, including longtime ensemble members Velina Brown, Keiko Shimosato-Carreiro and Brian Rivera , that it comes to life even without visuals and minus the appreciative laughter of a sun-soaked audience. The second half of “The Mystery of the Missing Worker” airs Aug. 29.” SF Examiner - July 6, 2020 “As a spoof of serials past, it's solid, quick-witted, and sets the bar high for subsequent episodes, which will satirize other radio-drama templates—namely adventure, horror, and science fiction." KQED - July 8, 2020 _____________________________________________________ MICHAEL GENE SULLIVAN Actor, Director, Teacher, and Resident Playwright Michael Gene Sullivan has performed in, written, and/or directed over thirty SFMT productions.

Podcast: Long Now: Seminars About Long-term Thinking (LS 48 · TOP 0.5% )Episode: Niall Ferguson: Networks and PowerRelease date: 2018-12-13“This time is different.” Historians: “Ha.” “The Net is net beneficial.” Historian Niall Ferguson: “Globalization is in crisis. Populism is on the march. Authoritarian states are ascendant. Technology meanwhile marches inexorably ahead, threatening to render most human beings redundant or immortal or both. How do we make sense of all this?” Ferguson analyzes the structure and prospects of “Cyberia” as yet another round in the endless battle between hierarchy and networks that has wrought spasms of innovation and chaos throughout history. He examines those previous rounds (including all that was set in motion by the printing press) in light of the current paradoxes of radical networking enabled by digital technology being the engine of massive hierarchical companies (Facebook, Amazon, Google, Twitter, and their equivalents in China) and exploited by populists and authoritarians around the world. He puts the fundamental question this way: “Is our age likely to repeat the experience of the period after 1500, when the printing revolution unleashed wave after wave of revolution? Will the new networks liberate us from the shackles of the administrative state as the revolutionary networks of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries freed our ancestors from the shackles of spiritual and temporal hierarchy? Or will the established hierarchies of our time succeed more quickly than their imperial predecessors in co-opting the networks, and enlist them in their ancient vice of waging war?” Niall Ferguson is currently a senior research fellow at Jesus College, Oxford, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and visiting professor at the New College of the Humanities. His books include The Square and the Tower: Networks and Power, from the Freemasons to Facebook (2018); Civilization: The West and the Rest (2012); and The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World (2009).

For this episode, I sit down with Anokhi, an architect and a new media artist who recently curated a show named "Cyberia" at TIFA Working Studios, Pune. We talk about how is it that the digital realm and the space in virtual reality have invaded our day to day life and how they are bound to collide and become the same at some point. Anokhi also helps us understand what are the most out-there examples of this happening in contemporary culture. Eva Pascoe came to London from her native Poland to study human-computer interaction and psychology. In 1994, she founded Cyberia, possibly the world's first Internet cafe, which was described by Wired magazine as “the most fashionable cafe in '90s London”. Backed by Mick Jagger, and visited, unexpectedly, by Bill Gates, Cyberia became a hub for first-time users of the Internet, especially women, and a growing arts tech scene. In this podcast, Eva remembers those heady days, how Cyberia expanded to a dozen international branches before she sold the business, and how it was almost as hard to find a decent cup of coffee in London back then as it was to get Internet access.
Do our digital tools have encoded within them some of the most destructive and de-humanizing aspects of our society — the notion that a person is no more than what she buys, or how well he plays according the conventional rules of mainstream success? It's a provocative point, which Douglas Rushkoff is well qualified to make. He's the bestselling author of 20 books, many of them exploring the frontiers of computer culture — from Cyberia and Media Virus in the mid-90s, to the recent Throwing Rocks at The Google Bus. His new book, Team Human, is a manifesto for a post-digital society and a celebration of human connection. Sitting outside the 5th & Elm Coffee located on campus, Lion Around discussed all the best coffee shops in the Copper Country. Both Monica and Gina are regular-ish coffee drinkers, who believe that coffee is beneficial to keep students functioning during their college careers. Geliche started drinking coffee within the last two to three years, while Freeman picked up the habit her senior year of high school. Due to their caffeine habits, the Lion Around hosts have scoured the Copper Country for coffee shops during the past three years. Favoring the unique aspects of the local shops more than the pre-packaged chain stores, the list they formed does not have Biggby Coffee on it, nor does it have the on-campus coffee shops located on Michigan Tech and Finlandia’s campuses. Freeman and Geliche decided it would be important to discuss things like; price for a plain old cup of joe, specialty drinks, food menu, distance from campus, personal suggestions, study ability, hours and unique aspects of the shop. HOUGHTON COFFEE SHOPS Starting with Houghton, which has the most local coffee shops, the first shop discussed is 5th & Elm. Originally started in Calumet, on the corner of 5th and Elm, the shop has two and half locations, one in Calumet, one in Houghton and a small shop located on Finlandia’s campus. While Houghton may not be the primary location, it tends to be the one that drives the most traffic. Freeman and Geliche praised the food menu at the shop, which is stocked with different sandwiches, salads, wraps and breakfast items. Freeman mentioned that it is the only place she knows of in the local area that sells matcha green tea for anyone who needs a caffeine buzz but doesn’t necessarily enjoy coffee. Also, in Houghton is the Bookworm, Cyberia and Steep & Brew. The Bookworm is located at the split in the road that takes drivers into downtown Houghton. The shop sells used books, meats and ice cream, outside of coffee. Bookworm is also one of the local shops that offers a punch card when you purchase their beverages. Freeman and Geliche suggest stopping by Cyberia to buy their coffee shakes or blended drinks. Cyberia offers various discounts throughout the year, for example in fall if you wear Ugg boots, customers can knock a percentage off their drink. The shop also offers free cereal after a certain time if customers come in wearing their pajamas. Outside of the fun perks, Cyberia has a quiet atmosphere for students to study in. Steep & Brew is the final coffee shop in Houghton, and is the only local coffee shop that has a drive through. What it makes up for in drive through-ness, it lacks in inside space, since it is a part of an antique/resale place. HANCOCK COFFEE SHOPS KC Bonkers is Hancock’s premiere coffee shop. While also selling coffee, customers can come in and shop for toys as well. Freeman and Geliche love to go grab a coffee and play the games that customers are able to play when they come in. Geliche suggests buying a Bonker Bubbler, a carbonated drink that customers can choose the flavoring for, as well as unicorn milk (cream) and clouds (whipped cream). In the coffee vein, Freeman suggests getting the Kablooey, which is a mocha with spices in it, so if customers have a low spice tolerance, Freeman suggests not getting that. Originally aired tuesday 12th of may 2009. Ghosthack from Germany is producing electronic music for over 4 years now, started first with Downtempo/Trip Hop stuff and found in 2007 with dubstep his electronic genre of choice. In 2008 he got his first releases published on Shift Recordings, featuring his tunes "Wired" and "Cyberia" on two compilations. In April 2009 his first 3 Track EP got released on Dubfront Records, another one will follow in June 2009. Ghosthack's sound is pretty dark, futuristic, glitchy and heavily inspired by cyberpunk stuff. "Imagine scorching through deep space incapsulated in a cargo ship that's currently under attack from mecha-aliens, and you start to get a feeling for the sound of the Ghosthack." My cyber friends, let us avoid the crunchpunks by plugging this filthy jack into the back of our elbows... Here we are: absorbed within the placentaverse of this vegan dopplersphere.
Winner of the Media Ecology Association's first Neil Postman award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity, Dr. Douglas Rushkoff is an author, teacher, and documentarian who focuses on the ways people, cultures, and institutions create, share, and influence each other's values. He is Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at CUNY/Queens, technology and media commentator for CNN, digital literacy advocate for Codecademy.com and a lecturer on media, technology, culture and economics around the world. His new book, Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity, argues that we have failed to build the distributed economy that digital networks are capable of fostering, and instead doubled down on the industrial age mandate of growth above all. His previous best-selling books on media and popular culture have been translated to over thirty languages. They include Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now, Program or Be Programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age, a followup to his Frontline documentary, Digital Nation, and Life Inc, an analysis of the corporate spectacle, which was also made into a short, award-winning film. His other books include Cyberia, Media Virus, Playing the Future, Nothing Sacred: The Truth about Judaism, Get Back in the Box: Innovation from the Inside Out and Coercion, winner of the Marshall Mcluhan Award for best media book. Rushkoff also wrote the acclaimed novels Ecstasy Club and Exit Strategy and graphic novel, Club Zero-G. He wrote the graphic novels Testament and A.D.D., for Vertigo. He has written and hosted three award-winning PBS Frontline documentaries – The Merchants of Cool looked at the influence of corporations on youth culture, The Persuaders, about the cluttered landscape of marketing, and new efforts to overcome consumer resistance, and Digital Nation, about life on the virtual frontier. Most recently, he made Generation Like, an exploration of teens, marketers, and social media. He has been awarded a Fullbright Scholarship, and Senior Fellowships by the Markle Foundation, the Center for Global Communications, and the International University of Japan. He served as an Advisor to the United Nations Commission on World Culture and regularly appears on TV shows from NBC Nightly News and Larry King to the Colbert Report and Bill Maher. He developed the Electronic Oracle software series for HarperCollins Interactive. In this episode, we talk about how he sees the purpose of Judaism is to help one transcend Judaism, the psycho-social peril of living in the digital now, and how the new media empires has failed to build the distributed economy that digital networks are capable of fostering, and instead doubled down on the industrial age mandate of growth above all. I got to talk to one of my heroes, and this show made it possible. Thanks, OTBR listeners. You make it all possible. Enjoy!

Tom explains some DJ Master T science. [Editorial note: As with many things in the original edition of Cyberia the naming is incorrect. It is in fact 5-MeO not MAO something like Steve Jobbs (sic).] Heron provides some narration to the comic book project and his early experiences with computers. Tom hasn't alienated a group of listeners. Some experiences have impacted Tom's life. They discuss the monopoly of Amazon versus men getting together. Heron starts a topic on people who have problems dealing with stress. Tom explores death as a natural part of life. These dirty CEOs with throat cancer. Heron needs to fight for his ideas. Saying long numbers sucks. Facebook has been manipulating you, duh. Tom takes a different direction to his Australia departure to show the multiple dimensionality to the whole experience. They explore angry people and how they exist in the professional world. How about that different narrative of Fox News? They wander into adoption as a topic. They discuss moving frequently and consider Independence Day.

Welcome to episode #400 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. For the 400th episode of this podcast series, I wanted to have a serious and in-depth conversation with someone who I consider to be one of the brightest minds when it comes to digital, media and technology. That's Douglas Rushkoff. The timing could not have been more perfect, because he is back with a new documentary that recently aired on Frontline titled, Generation Like. You will be doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't take the time to watch it (it's streaming for free online). Rushkoff's latest book is called, Present Shock, and he has ten-plus other best-selling books on new media and pop culture (including: Program Or Be Programmed, Life Inc., Cyberia, Media Virus, Playing the Future, Nothing Sacred: The Truth about Judaism, Get Back in the Box: Innovation from the Inside Out and Coercion, winner of the Marshall Mcluhan Award for best media book). He does tons of teaching and public speaking, but also makes time to produce and write documentaries like Generation Like (along with The Merchants of Cool, The Persuaders, Digital_Nation). If that weren't enough, Douglas Rushkoff has written two series of graphic novels for Vertigo called, Testament and A.D.D.. I'm always honored that he takes the time to have these types of conversations with me, and we decided to deep dive into some of the bigger themes of this documentary, and what it means to society, as a whole. Lastly, thank you very much for listening to my podcast. I put out these shows, because having these conversations make me better (and hopefully smarter)> The fact that thousands of people - every week - enjoy them right along with me is a true privilege. I'm not one to celebrate milestones and the like, but thank you for being a part of my journey to discover. Enjoy the conversation... Black Hat Briefings, Japan 2005 [Audio] Presentations from the security conference
"Has your network ever been hacked, and all you have to show for your investigative efforts is an IP address belonging to an ISP in Irkutsk? Are you tired of receiving e-mails from Citibank that resolve to Muscovite IP addresses? Would you like to hack the Kremlin? Or do you think that the Kremlin has probably owned you first? Maybe you just think that Anna Kournikova is hot. If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then you need an introduction to the Gulag Archipelago of the Internet, the Cyberia of interconnected networks, Russia. Do not let the persistent challenges of crossing international boundaries intimidate you any longer. In this briefing, we will follow several real-world scenarios back to Russia, and you will learn valuable strategies for taking your investigations and operations one big geographical step further. A brief introduction to Russia will be followed by 1,000 traceroutes over the frozen tundra described in detail, along with an explanation of the relationship between cyber and terrestrial geography. Information will be provided on Russian hacker groups and law enforcement personnel, as well as a personal interview with the top Russian cyber cop, conducted in Russian and translated for this briefing. Quick: name one significant advantage that Russian hackers have over you. They can read your language, but you cannot read theirs! Since most Westerners cannot read Russian, the secrets of Russian hacking are largely unknown to Westerners. You will receive a short primer on the Russian language, to include network security terminology, software translation tools, and cross-cultural social engineering faux-pas (this method will apply to cracking other foreign languages as well). Hacking in a Foreign Language details a four-step plan for crossing international frontiers in cyberspace. First, you must learn something about the Tribe: in this case, the chess players and the cosmonauts. Second, you must study their cyber Terrain. We will examine the open source information and then try to create our own network map using traceroutes. Third, we will look at the Techniques that the adversary employs. And fourth, we will conquer Translation. The goal is to level the playing field for those who do not speak a foreign language. This briefing paves the way for amateur and professional hackers to move beyond their lonely linguistic and cultural orbit in order to do battle on far-away Internet terrain. Kenneth Geers (CISSP, M.A. University of Washington, 1997) has worked for many years as a programmer, Web developer, translator, and analyst. The oddest job he had was working on the John F. Kennedy Assassination Review Board (don't ask). He also waited tables in Luxembourg , harvested grapes in the Middle East, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, was bitten by a deadly spider in Zanzibar and made Trappist beer at 3 AM in the Rochefort monastery. Mr. Geers is the author of "Cyber Jihad: Computer Networks as a Battle Ground in the Middle East"; "Hacking in a Foreign Language: A Network Security Guide to Russia"; and "Sex, Lies, and Cyberspace: Behind Saudi Arabia's National Firewall". He loves his wife Jeanne, and daughters Isabelle, Sophie and Juliet."
