Why does discussing the overlooked 1991 classic “Dead Again” feel like we’re living a past life? Maybe it’s the shock of seeing young Sir Kenneth Branagh (attempting a weird American accent) and Dame Emma Thompson. Maybe it’s Sir Derek Jacobi making us wonder if that stutter is an “I, Claudius” reference. Maybe it’s the whole romantic fantasy thing, with a Hitchcockian past intruding on a 1990s present. Episode 070: King Lear by William Shakespeare Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Paul Prescott Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. The poet Percy Shelley called King Lear “the most perfect specimen of the dramatic art existing in the world”. It is a prodigious play in every sense. There are ten major roles, it has multiple significant plot lines, an elemental stormy setting, intense domestic conflict, and acts of war and violence which roll on with a propulsive tragic energy and conjure a challenging philosophical vision. As we record this episode a new production directed by and starring Sir Kenneth Branagh arrives in London's West End. I am very pleased to be joined in this episode by Paul Prescott, who is an academic, writer and theatre practitioner specialising in Shakespearean drama.

“A Haunting in Venice,” the latest cinematic adaptation featuring novelist Agatha Christie's fictional detective Hercule Poirot, starring and directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh, includes another unforgettable score by multiple award-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. But unlike most of her other groundbreaking work, this score features a more “classical” approach — a creative decision stemming all the way back to Hildur's childhood!“Having grown up reading Agatha Christie and Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes and all these classics, I had a really strong feeling for how I felt like this genre should be approached. And how I felt like it should not be approached. And [its] quite the opposite to most of my work, where I'm quite explorative of sounds and instrumentation and building instruments or building sample worlds or found sounds. I feel like the whodunit should really just be a classical form (laughs) that should not be tampered with.”—Hildur Guðnadóttir, Composer, “A Haunting in Venice”Our guest host, music journalist Jon Burlingame, returns to the Dolby Institute Podcast to speak with Hildur about her work on this film as well as her vast knowledge of music history from this period.Be sure to check out A Haunting in Venice, now in theaters, in Dolby Atmos® where available. Please subscribe to The Dolby Institute Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Aaaaaaaaaaaand we're back – back to basics, back to the three amigos. Just three friends talking all things movies. In this week's episode, Raf, Rod and Jordan clear the air to catch up on all things television, movies and whatever else is on their minds – and trust me, if Rod's part of that group, it's a doozy. The trio dive into some of their recent letterboxd watches, from Raf's venture into Ti West's slasher X to Rod's Peruvian getaway Without Saying Goodbye (I'll leave it to Rod to pronounce it correctly in Spanish) to Jordan's Oscar jump into Sir Kenneth Branagh's Belfast. Maybe there isn't enough interesting films to go around anymore – we're in that slump in the release schedule where duds roam the cinemas and we turn to TV. From Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to Midnight Mass and The Gilded Age, maybe it's time to realize that television takes the cake over the cinema. Also – pop culture isn't left hanging – from Rachel Zegler's Oscar drama to NBA legend Kareem Abdul Jabaar weighing in on cinema…there isn't a shortage of the going-ons of the world. Heck, we stumble onto how trailers just ruin everything (we're looking at you Taylor Swift and Where the Crawdads Sing) how maybe all future films will end up being 90% CGI and if HBO guilted themselves in renewing whatever was that Sex in the City reboot. I guess the conversation rules over quality – right? Also, for those Rod stans, this episode has 2-3 patented Rod Rants so, don't forget your popcorn for this episode of Layered Butter.Preshow:Kareem Abdul Jabaar's disappointing films of 2021https://kareem.substack.com/p/the-3-most-disappointing-movies-of?token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjo1MDIxOTc1MCwicG9zdF9pZCI6NTA3MDUyNDMsIl8iOiJBSms2WCIsImlhdCI6MTY0NzkxMjczMCwiZXhwIjoxNjQ3OTE2MzMwLCJpc3MiOiJwdWItNDgyODU2Iiwic3ViIjoicG9zdC1yZWFjdGlvbiJ9.K53fgebVnTaUbdyloNfXx0WkTu2PSSLwjxS97Mdb9KM&s=rRachel Zegler is attending the Oscars after all.https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/rachel-zegler-oscars-presenter-ticket-exclusive-1235116461/YouTuber Chris Stuckmann breaks records for his crowdsourced first full-length picturehttps://deadline.com/2022/03/chris-stuckmann-horror-movie-kickstarter-record-shelby-oaks-1234983058/Media We've Watched (Our Film Club)RodWithout Saying Goodbyehttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt14404596/The Gilded Agehttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt4406178/JordanThe Marvelous Mrs. Maiselhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt5788792/Turning Redhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt8097030/Belfasthttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt12789558/RafMidnight Masshttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt10574558/Freshhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt13403046/Xhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt13560574/Winning Timehttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt10244600/

Your Stupid Minds returns to its alternating YA theme with a book adaptation that Miramax and Disney had big hopes for, and then was dumped on Disney+ in the middle of the pandemic without so much as a $20 premium to watch it. It's 2020's Artemis Fowl, directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh. Artemis Fowl II (Ferdia Shaw) is a super smart smarmy super genius whose mom is dead and dad (Artemis Fowl I, played by Colin Farrell) keeps leaving for long stretches of time for strange and sexy adventures. But one of dad's adventures puts him in hot water with a mysterious fairy (who looks like Ronan the Accuser) who kidnaps the dad and demands Artemis II give them the Aculos, an egg-shaped MacGuffin that has a bunch of power and stuff. Can Artemis save his dad? Using an elaborate heist-like plan and high charisma buff? Yeah.

On this week's episode of the Curzon Film Podcast we speak to Moonlight director, Barry Jenkins, about his new film, If Beale Street Could Talk, and we discuss All Is True with none other than Sir Kenneth Branagh. We start with If Beale Street Could Talk. Adapted from the novel by celebrated author, James Baldwin, it follows the romance between Fonny and Tish, two young lovers living in 1970s Harlem, New York. Their love is tested to its limits when Fonny is wrongly imprisoned, and the fight for justice takes a heavy toll on the young couple's lives. Once again taking social realist material and blending it with a poetic eye, Jenkins' film simply glows off the screen.Later in the episode we look at Sir Kenneth Branagh's All Is True, which tells the little known story of Sir William Shakespeare's humble retirement. Written by Ben Elton and directed by Sir Kenneth, this is a new take on Shakespeare that collects together the cream of British acting talent (including Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Judi Dench) and is shot with an elegance and beauty, as well as a pitched honesty, that is a tribute to the Bard.Discussing the films this week are Kelly Powell, Ella Kemp, Jake Cunningham and Steven RyderFollow the team on Social Media:@ks_powell - Kelly@jakehcunningham - Jake@irma_pep - Steven@efekemp - EllaProduced by Jake CunninghamEdited by Mark Towers Hosted on Acast.
