Ryan Leahy's baseball journey is as complex as any you've heard of. He started as a player, making his way to the L.A. Angels, when he was diagnosed with recurring thyroid cancer. Not letting the illness define him, Leahy won the Angels' 2008 Courage Award and was friends with BU's Pete Frates, whose ALS diagnosis brought New Englanders together. Leahy has gone on to scout for MLB and found Recruiting Edge, a consultancy for students looking to get an honest assessment and the best match for their baseball careers.

In this episode Morehead State University Baseball Coach Mik Aoki shares his experiences in transformational coaching, building culture and how to give those you lead the best chance for success as people, students and players. With a pedigree encompassing more than 450 collegiate wins and more than 50 draft picks by Major League organizations, Mik Aoki is now in his third year as head baseball coach at Morehead State. Aoki (A-Oh-key) led the baseball program at Notre Dame for nine seasons after serving as the head coach at Boston College for four campaigns. He also held the head coaching spot at Columbia. Forty of his players over his time as a head coach have been named all-conference. Aoki piloted the Irish to 248 wins while seeing 26 of his student-athletes drafted into MLB organizations, including a first-round pick. Four of his players went on to stints with Major League teams, including current Notre Dame alums Caven Biggio (Toronto) and Trey Mancini (Baltimore). In addition to on-field success, Aoki's Notre Dame clubs raised more than $75,000 for charity from 2014-19, including awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease). In 2018 and 2019, the baseball team won “The Trophy” at ND for the team most committed to community service. In 2018, his team alone logged more than 1,000 hours of community service. His teams also consistently turned in 3.0 or better team grade point averages. Aoki has been a strong advocate for the Pete Frates #3 Fund since the diagnosis of his former outfielder, Pete Frates, with ALS in 2012. Frates was a freshman at Boston College during Aoki's first season as BC and served as team captain on the 2007 Eagles squad which was Aoki's first as head coach. Since Frates' diagnosis and ultimate death from ALS, Aoki has helped raise thousands for the foundation to help offset his medical costs and fund research for a cure to ALS. In this Coaching Matters Group Coaching and Podcast Sponsored By Fundraising University, Coach Aoki will discuss Transformational vs. Transactional Coaching: Using Sport To Teach Life The Coaching Matters Podcast is brought to you by Fundraising University and Brian Cain Peak Performance. Dozens of people kicked off Ice Bucket Challenge month in Massachusetts by pouring a bucket of ice over their heads on Friday. WBZ NewsRadio's Suzanne Sausville Reports:
In this special episode I share my chat with ALS Ice Bucket Challenge co-founder Pat Quinn who inspired millions before losing his battle to ALS. Pat Quinn was the last of three ALS warriors, Anthony Senerchia, Pete Frates and Pat Quinn to be the first to accelerate the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge while living with ALS. Pat from Yonkers , New York passed away at 37 in November 2020 after a heroic, seven year battle. He fought with positivity and courage and inspired me and all who knew him. Pat helped generate awareness and raise more than $220 million around the world for ALS research through the Ice Bucket Challenge. The campaign had over 20 million videos being created and shared around the world. Pat changed the trajectory of the ALS fight forever. He inspired millions to get involved and care about people who are living with ALS. Even now, his words are inspiring others to face adversity with grace and grit. In this episode you'll hear a partial interview that Pat and I were in the midst of preparing before he passed away. You'll wanna hear his powerful words on how to handle adversity and live our precious lives out. I also catch up with Fernando Vieira CEO of ALS Therapy Development Institute on how the Ice Bucket Challenge advanced ALS research. I'm so grateful to have this message to share with you. Thank you for listening, sharing and creating ALS awareness. Pat would be so grateful as well. On this episode of the Global News podcast Whatever Happened To…?, journalist Erica Vella revisits the story of the ice bucket challenge. In 2014, social media feeds were flooded with videos of people showering themselves in ice cold water; the goal was to raise awareness and money for ALS. Julie Frates’ husband, Pete Frates, was one of the co-creators. “Our good friend Pat Quinn, who has ALS and lives in New York, he was challenged and in that challenge, he also named one of Pete's good friends,” she said. “Pete saw it immediately and thought, okay … everyone's got to get on this right away and I remember sitting down that night at dinner and he directed all of us to go on Facebook and just continually start challenging people and sharing it.” The campaign went viral; celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Fallon and Bill Gates joined in on the dare and globally over $220 million dollars was raised. “It was unfathomable,” she said. “It was shocking for us and it was shocking for everyone in the medical community. Everyone who had spent their whole career trying to research this disease; it was kind of like such a huge windfall. It was amazing and overwhelming and completely hard to grasp.” Pete was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2012. The disease weakens muscles and impairs physical functioning. There is no known cure. Erica Vella speaks with the family that started the viral campaign to see what has happened since 2014 and endeavors to answer; did it lead to any positive change? Remembering Paul Volcker, Dr. Margaret Lawrence, Pete FratesPaul Volcker was the Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1979 to 1987. At a time when inflation was extremely high, he committed to raising interest rates to tame inflation. Although it brought on a mild recession, his strategy worked and he restored balance to the economy. Despite being denied admission to medical school by her alma mater Cornell, Dr. Margaret Lawrence graduated from Columbia and worked with Dr. Benjamin Spock. She became America’s first African-American child psychologist. Pete Frates was the Boston College baseball player who contracted amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - Lou Gehrig’s disease- but he went on to devise the ice bucket challenge to raise awareness and funds to combat the disease.

THEN, they talk about the NFL officiating that still affects the outcomes of games. Like the Patriots games. Lynchie says the league will have to fix it AGAIN. Hank is a conspiracy theorist and doesn't think the league cares. All they want is for the masses to be talking about the NFL! Mike told a funny story about an interview with former Patriots' coach with Ron Meyer and how he accidentally got a big scoop.....that wasn't really a scoop. You'll have to listen. Bob then talked about chasing Meyer in a cab. The guys had some good Natalie Jacobson talk about when she and Mike were part of the legendary channel 5 newscast. Oh.....ever wonder how Bob came up with the phrase "Why can't we get players like that?" You'll find out! Lastly, the guys pay tribute to Pete Frates, the former Boston College baseball star who died this week after a courageous battle with ALS. Pete raised hundreds of millions of dollars for ALS research and is a real hero!

ALS is going to take my son away. I have grieved and my family has grieved every day for seven and a half years. We know what the outcome is, but you cannot speak about this journey without acknowledging the gifts we have also been given. -Nancy Frates You've heard of The Ice Bucket Challenge, right? This is the story of how it came about. On March 13, 2012 Nancy Frates accompanied her son Pete to a doctor's appointment. Only 27 years old, he had been a superb, lifelong athlete. In fact, Pete had played professional baseball in Europe following his graduation from Boston College. Now living in Boston and making his way in the insurance industry, Pete had been hit in the wrist by a fastball in a summer league and thought he had a pinched nerve. When the doctor said tests confirmed he had ALS, Petes' mother Nancy admits: “I didn't know what ALS was. I just knew it was bad.” Also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, after the famous New York Yankees baseball player who died of the disease in 1941, ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. There is no treatment and no cure for ALS and the average patient lives 2-5 years after diagnosis. During that time, muscles are rendered useless and ALS is 100% fatal. No one would have blamed Nancy Frates if she shut herself in a dark room and cried for days, weeks, or even months, but that is not what Peter wanted. Instead, he gathered his family and his friends and formed team Frate Train. Using the power of social media, Pete showed the world what ALS was doing to him and was determined to raise awareness and money for research. Pete is the inspiration for The Ice Bucket Challenge, a worldwide fundraising phenomenon that raised 220 million dollars for the ALS Foundation and its global partners. Married and the father of a 5 year old daughter named Lucy, Pete Frates is still alive, experiencing daily moments of joy his daughter and loved ones bring him. His mother remains steadfast in her love for her son and her passion to find a cure she knows will not come in time for him. “My husband and I cry, but we also cry tears of joy because look at what this child of ours has done. Look at the people he has inspired. We are filled with immense pride.” Listen to Nancy's story for a master class in the power of mother love. #icebucketchallenge @BWME #storybehindhersuccess #16LifeLessons #mydoveproductions

Episode 64 is time for my annual Father's Day episode. Though I do this every year, it's not the same every year. Because of a few things going on with people around me and people I'm talking to, this episode kind of caught me by surprise with the direction it took.Unscripted. You got that part of the title of the podcast, right?I almost wrote out a script for this episode, believe it or not. I think if I had, and maybe even did that every day for a week, it would be quite different each time. So, this episode is almost like one of those really cool "long, single takes" that they talk about when you watch a Criterion Collection version of some film. So, unscripted, I went into this episode... and, sure, it shows. But, maybe the pure honesty of it is beneficial because of that? That's what I will tell myself anyway.I recorded this episode (just to document this here) the week that Big Papi (former major leaguer / future hall of famer David Ortiz) was shot in what was an alleged murder attempt. As I talked briefly about him, and how much this all affected me, it led me into a discussion about heroes. I quickly moved from "celebrity" type heroes to real life, (not-so-average) "average Joe" heroes. This had me reminiscing about some of my very recent guests (Rob Gorski from Ep. 61, Bill Protzmann from Ep. 62 and Jon Bailey who will be on Ep. 65). This also dove-tailed into my thinking of some of the other issues and people that have been on my mind a lot for quite some time now.Cancer has always been my "hot button disease", for a lack of a better way to say that. Obviously, I guess, since it took my Dad away from me nearly 29 years ago. But, for maybe two years or so now, I have really been puzzled by this disease I started hearing more and more about: ALS. I don't know anybody personally that has been stricken by this horrifically untethered disease. Yet. But, I have started to follow some of them on social media, and have started to feel more connected to people with ALS (or pALS) because of that. So, it has started to confuse and anger me all the more. So, as I was talking about heroes, I mentioned Pete Frates, the man who the 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge was created because of. Remember that? I also mentioned Brian Wallach. Brian and his wife created iamals.org after Brian was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 37. I honestly cannot even tell you how I stumbled into Brian via Twitter some time ago, but it happened and I am so grateful that it did.In the past few months I have really started to educate myself more and more on ALS and made a point to do what I can to help spread the word and hopefully get even more people active in the fight. I hope that others will get inspired to do whatever they can to help in the fight and the search for treatment and an eventual cure for ALS.I went very kumbaya in this episode. I can't help it. When I start thinking about some of the things that ail this world and all of us living on it, I tend to go to this place. So, I talked about how easy it can be for us to be better. To be more kind. To be more loving. To make changes in the life of that guy over there... or that woman sitting there near you. Yes... that one. Oh, and that other one too. And, hey -- when you do something nice for that guy, guess what? The chances are he may do something nice for that other guy over there. And then both of those guys might be even extra cool while they are at work. And maybe they come into contact with anywhere from 5 to 105 people while they are working. So, all of those people might get an extra boost. Do you see where I'm going with this?I hope you like this little episode. I really do feel like it may contain a little something for everyone. So, in that vein: won't you share it around? I feel like it's the end of Ghostbusters 2 and we're all covered in that slime and we just need to lock arms and sing "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher" to make the world better. Or maybe the end of Scrooged when they sing "Put A... Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/daddyunscripted. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We are taking a little detour from our usual format to bring you this very special episode. We hosted a conversation between the illustrious sports reporters Gordon Edes and Steve Buckley with arguably the most well know Presidential Historian in the world - Doris Kearns Goodwin. With the 2018 Red Sox World Series Trophy in the room, we talked, sang and celebrated Red Sox Baseball while raising money for the amazing Pete Frates Family Foundation. We would bet that most of you listening either participated in or at least heard of the Ice Bucket challenge. Started by Pete Frates who was struck with ALS a few years ago, with his parents John and Nancy and the millions of people who took part in the challenge, the foundation has raised a ¼ of a billion dollars to fight ALS, which is just astounding. We were truly honored to have John and Nancy Frates join us on that Sunday evening to say a few words as well as Red Sox great Sam Horn, Red Sox Poet Laureate Dick Flavin and the Sox Fenway Park organist Josh Kantor. It was a special night, made all the more wonderful not only by the money raised but the gathering of friends and family.
BJ and Joan visit Fenway Park for the star-studded launch party for "The Ice Bucket Challenge: Pete Frates and the Fight Against ALS," a new book by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge. We learn firsthand how several generations of a family facing a terrifying disease come together to make a permanent difference in the world.

When Nancy Frates' son, Pete, was diagnosed with ALS in 2012, she was confused. Pete was a 27-year-old athlete and the only people she'd ever known with this disease were elderly already. Ever since that life-changing moment, she and her family have found their sense of purpose in working tirelessly to raise awareness about ALS and to stimulate funding for research. Pete Frates inspired the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which quickly became a viral fundraising phenomenon. Nancy talks to us about her family, the ways her own life has changed, and how the Ice Bucket Challenge was able to raise well over 200 million dollars.
