On Friday, A'ndre chatted with Dr. Lindsay Chervinsky, a presidential historian and Executive Director of the George Washington Presidential Library, to explore President Jimmy Carter's presidential and post-presidential foreign policy legacy following his passing at age 100. The discussion began by addressing public reactions to Carter's death and why the dichotomy of a “failed presidency but outstanding post-presidency” is misleading. Dr. Chervinsky highlighted Carter's foreign policy achievements, including the Camp David Accords, normalization of relations with China, handling of the Cold War, and the Panama Canal Treaty, as well as Carter's difficulties in dealing with the Iranian Hostage Crisis and inflation. They examined Carter's presidency in the context of the geopolitical landscape of the late 1970s and his approach to diplomacy, contrasting his administration with the subsequent Reagan era. The conversation also touched on Carter's post-presidential influence on foreign policy through the Carter Center and drew parallels between his legacy redefinition and that of John Quincy Adams.

What does it look like to rise to the occasion on the most public of stages? How do you inspire those around you to believe in a common cause, or to take steps that benefit the whole even at the expense of the self? In his new book, MEETING THE MOMENT: Inspiring Presidential Leadership that Transformed America (SUNY Press; November 1, 2024) William Haldeman, with experience serving two presidencies (Bush and Obama), looks at six US presidents across party lines and eras, detailing the crucial points in history when their leadership abilities were on full display-the instances when they leveraged their wisdom and lived experience to inspire, memorialize, challenge, dare, or in one case, with recent resonance, simply retire. In the telling, Haldeman explores well-known events and reinvigorates them, looking at them through the lens of courage and leadership. Eight score and one year ago, Lincoln gave a brief speech in rural Pennsylvania, but what led him to that moment? Why was Jefferson confident the US was ready to acquire land from west of the Mississippi to the Rockies? And perhaps most relevant to our current moment, what gave Washington the strength to walk away from power at a time when the founders' archetype of leadership, Kings, would never consider doing so? How do these stories from centuries past show us what leadership looks like in the 21st century? Whether one aspires to political office or simply to improve their ability to lead and serve those around them, MEETING THE MOMENT is an indispensable look at the skills needed to unify and inspire under the most challenging of circumstances.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Presidential Historian Predicts Joe Biden Ranks as the Worst President of All Time

It is through the lens of history that the actions and decisions of our leaders are truly seen and understood. In response to a recent grading on U.S. Presidents, presidential historian and Ronald Reagan biographer, Craig Shirly, shared unsettling sentiments in connection to the present Head of State, Joe Biden. The survey, conducted by the scholars of Presidential Greatness Project, surprisingly ranked President Biden over Reagan, seeding him as the 14th greatest president in US history. The notion did not sit well with Shirley, who expressed distaste and dismissed the analysts as having a left-leaning inclination. In direct reaction to the survey's outcome, Shirley, the accomplished author of 'The Search for Reagan' and a soon-to-be-published biography on President Trump, replied with fervor and dared to forecast the historical judgement of Biden. According to him, the judgement of impartial historians, in the fullness of time, will place Biden as the least effective among all American Presidents, a prediction drenched more in concern than in annoyance. While expressing his disdain towards the study's results, the Reagan biographer voiced that the notion of Biden being a distinguished president was an absurdity. He asked rhetorically, 'Can we highlight one sphere where his success sparkles, except for budget consumption?' It was pointed out that the task of squandering resources, in his view, does not take immense skill or brilliance.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
