Psychic Temple is the extended-family project of Chris Schlarb, the proprietor of the retro-chic Big Ego studio in Long Beach, California. Chris is an old friend of mine, going back to the turn of the century when I lived for a brief period time in Long Beach. This episode is being released shortly after the announcement of the dissolution of Psychic Temple, which is addressed during a quick follow-up call at the top of the show. This episode was engineered by Chris Schlarb at Big Ego in the summer of 2023. Chris shares with me about his musical background, his creative endeavors, and some of his work-for-hire as a record producer, including the final Psychic Temple album, Doggie Paddlin' Through the Cosmic Consciousness. The portrait of Chris Schlarb for this episode was hand-drawn by Jack Habegger. Low Profile is supported by YOU at patreon.com/LowProfile. Producing this show costs time and money! Mike's singular and very personal musical style seeks to blur the lines between song and solo, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. The press says this approach is “…beguilingly atmospheric…” (Time Out New York) and that “Baggetta's music is quietly transgressive… Even when he plays a lot of notes, his playing can sound almost static, as though ideas were being snagged out of thin air.” (Hartford Courant) Baggetta's most recent release is the album Everywhen We Go, his second album with drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Mike Watt on the BIG EGO label. He also leads the band mssv, is a post-genre power trio featuring the iconoclastic rhythm team of drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Mike Watt. They have just released their self-titled debut studio album, Main Steam Stop Valve, on BIG EGO Records, following up 2020's Live Flowers album on Striped Light Records, recorded live in Philadelphia, PA and Northampton, MA (with special guest J Mascis), as well as 3 limited edition 7” releases recorded solely over quarantine, featuring guest artists Petra Haden and Nels Cline. After completing their first full US tour in spring 2022 mssv recorded their second full length album for release next year. This band grew out of Baggetta's first album for BIG EGO, Wall of Flowers, which featured a reimagining of his music alongside bassist Mike Watt and drummer Jim Keltner. Baggetta has had the pleasure to work all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fear will stop you in your tracks, but what if you could make friends with fear? Here's 3 things you can do today… Kim McMillen discovered, “When I loved myself enough I began to see that my ego is part of my soul. With this shift in perception it lost its stridency and paranoia, and it could do its job.” Rich Joshi from Power Thoughts Meditation Club wrote this, "The Ego's role is to protect you, but it takes itself too seriously at times." (Karen England) @RishaJoshi @PowerThoughtsMeditationClub The next time your ego is triggered by fear, take a look at your E.G.O. by evolving and growing… Evolving and Growing Our E.G.O. YOUR E.G.O. Ask yourself... 1. E: Emergency or Experience? 2. G: Get or Receive? 3. O: Open or Closed? When you do this, it will no longer be about ego, but you'll say to yourself, "IGO"... :) Keep growing. Keep going, my dear. Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. JOURNAL (Daily Action To Engage yourself.) TODAY'S SACRED S.O.L. So, is having a big ego good or bad? It depends on what's important to you. There are several advantages to having a big ego: 1. A big ego can lead to big success. You're unlikely to ever become a national level politician, a CEO, or succeed in any highly competitive field without a big ego. Big egos love to outdo the competition. So, an ego can be invaluable when the competition is fierce. 2. A big ego can be helpful in overcoming obstacles. Those with big egos are so often so pleased with themselves that they don't allow silly obstacles to stand in their way. They think they can do anything, so why would an obstacle be a significant issue? A big ego can allow you to set huge goals and believe that you can achieve them. The unreasonable level of confidence that often accompanies a big ego can be an asset. However, the news isn't all positive. There are also disadvantages to having a big ego: 1.You're often too concerned about the opinions of others. While some people with big egos couldn't care less what others think, others are obsessed with the opinions of others. A big ego can suffer big pain when it's not appreciated as much as it thinks it should be. 2.You're never satisfied. An ego is a hungry beast that's never full. You can't do enough to satisfy a big ego. It always wants more. Whether it's power, money, attention, or praise, it can't get enough. Those with big egos never experience peace. 3.It can be detrimental to those around you. Your ego can harm the people around you, which is the biggest reason why many people avoid egotistical people. When you're focused on yourself and satisfying your ego, others are just a means to an end. 4.Your ego can blind you to the truth. Your ego lies to you. You can't see the truth, because your ego greatly influences your perception. 5.Your ego can make you afraid of failure. An overactive ego likes to protect itself. It's your ego that makes you uncomfortable when you want to try something new. It's your ego that tries to stop you from talking to the beautiful woman or the handsome man. Your ego can be a good thing, or a negative thing, depending on the situation. Your ego can make you sensitive to failure or overconfident in your abilities. Your ego can drive you to be successful, but it can also harm those you care about the most. Be aware of your ego and how it influences your behavior and your goals. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wayne-weathersby/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wayne-weathersby/support
So many people seem to be offended by the fact that women are showing up louder, taking up more space, and caring less. How unfortunate. Women have been told for so long to be sweet and docile and for many of us that's never been our truth. We deserve to have egos, be respected, and be heard. And it should not be a problem Men and Women could peacefully coexist and maybe even get some things accomplished if we weren't always fighting about roles and whos who. We are US. Don't be threatened, take notes.
Julie & Adrian have the chisme on relationships & why they're all driven by one's own ego. Lauren London was on Angie Martinez's IRL podcast talking about why she may never get married again because relationships are "ego driven & not pure". So of course we had to share our thoughts. The Pop Culture Pop Up has chisme on Constance Wu sharing that she tried to end her life after her viral tweets about her show being picked up for another season, the broadway drama of the century revolving around Beanie Feldstein & Lea Michelle, & Jada Pinkett Smith had an affair with Marc Anthony. What if a psychic said you'd never make it in music? In this episode, Jim Infantino — songwriter, Jim's Big Ego frontman, and novelist — tells us what happened next, along with stories from the early days and the road, the bubble-world of the creative mindset, a very special carriage house located in the Paris of the '90s, surprise studio visits from Aimee Mann, and how knowing your Friends from your 'Friends' can make all the difference.
