The Chiefs are closing in on the end of organized team activities and on today's SportsBeat KC, The Star's daily sports podcast, we hear from the coordinators. Special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Dave Toub doesn't like the new rule that will allow the ball to be placed at the 25 with a fair catch inside the 25. Also, Toub provides updates on players the Chiefs could use at return positions. Matt Nagy is back at offensive coordinator, a position he held with the Chiefs in 2016 and 2017 before becoming head coach of the Chicago Bears. He tells us what might be different about the offense this season. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo coached up several rookies last season and faces that prospect again. He tells us who has made good early impressions. Story link: The Chiefs want to ‘stay aggressive' after this NFL rule change. Why that's a mistake Learn more about your ad choices. May was better than April for the Royals, but not good enough to get the team out of last place in the AL Central. The Royals head into June with a 17-39 record, one of two in baseball to not reach the 20-victory plateau. What were the highlights and low points for the month? On today's SportsBeat KC, The Star's daily sports podcast, beat writer Jaylon Thompson and editor Scott Chasen break it down and look ahead to June. One thought: As good as Salvador Perez and Zack Greinke were in May, the Royals need some of their younger players to step up in a more consistent way. DeAndre Hopkins has been among the top NFL wide receivers in his career, and he's available after his release by the Arizona Cardinals last week. What are the chances Hopkins joins the Chiefs? According to beat writer Jesse Newell, the case against landing in Kansas City has more checks than the case for Hopkins joining Patrick Mahomes and company. Newell lays out his reason on today's SportsBeat KC, The Star's daily sports podcast. Also discussed: Why the Chiefs are planning to enter the 2023 season without a fullback for the first time in Andy Reid's tenure. You'll also hear from new left tackle Donovan Smith, who spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before signing with the Chiefs. Not a good weekend for Kansas City's soccer teams. Sporting KC got trounced in its first game against expansion team Saint Louis City, and the KC Current dropped its fourth straight, and second this week, to Racing Louisville. Both teams have been fighting uphill battles throughout the season, and they've shown signs of solid play. Before Sporting's loss it had going 2-0-1 and the Current posted a three-game winning streak earlier this season. On today's SportsBeat KC, The Star's daily sports podcast, beat writer Daniel Sperry drills down on the recent results but also looks at the big picture and examines what needs to happen for both to realize their playoff aspiration. The AFC Championship Game is set and it's on repeat. The Chiefs will play host to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday with the winner headed to the Super Bowl. The meetings between these teams over the past two seasons have been close, all decided by a field goal. The problem for the Chiefs is they've lost all of them, even after holding a lead in the fourth quarter in every game. Patrick Mahomes vs. Joe Burrow is the headliner, but there are plenty of other intriguing matchups in this one, and we spend the rest of the week talking about them. But today's show is dedicated to the Chiefs' Divisional Round playoff victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Chiefs have won 18 playoff games in 63 seasons as a franchise. We're not about to overlook one. After the Chiefs' 27-20 victory, beat writers Jesse Newell and Herbie Teope discussed the game and the big news that emerged from it, Mahomes' ankle injury. He missed a series–Chad Henne drove the Chiefs 98 yards for a touchdown–but returned to lead the victory. All signs appear good for Mahomes to play against the Bengals and we'll learn more about his health this week. The Chiefs outgained the Houston Texans 502 yards to 219, held an overwhelming advantage in first downs (33-18) and controlled the ball for 10 minutes longer than their hosts. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 20 straight passes in Sunday's game at NRG Stadium. So why the Chiefs need overtime to record a 30-24 victory over a team that dropped to 1-12-1 this season? Let's count the ways: Two fumbles, 10 penalties and a missed field goal and extra point, for starters. The Chiefs bumbled enough to keep the game close. But in the end they found a way to get it done. A big play by the defense, forcing and recovering a fumble, and Jerick McKinnon's 26-yard touchdown run in overtime made the difference. On today's SportsBeat KC podcast, we cover it all with columnist Vahe Gregorian and beat writer Herbie Teope. This wasn't a championship performance from the Chiefs, but it was good enough to clinch their seventh straight AFC West title. And in the end, that's the most important takeaway for a team that nearly gave it away twice. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The good news first. In defeating the Denver Broncos on Sunday, the Chiefs improved to 10-3 and won their 14th straight over the AFC West rival. The final score was 34-28. But the Chiefs led this game 27-0 and seemed on their way to a blowout victory. Three Patrick Mahomes interceptions and some shaky defense brought Denver back into the game. On today's SportsBeat KC podcast, Star columnist Sam McDowell and beat writer Jesse Newell break down the game's ebbs and flows. What tells us more about their Chiefs; jumping to the big lead, or losing nearly all of it. The show started as a SportsBeat Live broadcast about 30 minutes after the game. For the first time since 2003, Kansas State is playing in a Big 12 Championship Game. The Wildcats can only hope this one will go as well. Two decades ago, K-State throttled then top-ranked Oklahoma at Arrowhead Stadium. This time, the opponent is undefeated TCU angling for a spot in the College Football Playoff. The game is Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex. In between those games, Kansas State picked up another Big 12 championship, in 2012, but there wasn't a title game then. Jeff Gueldner started on a Kansas Jayhawks NCAA champion team, and today you hear his insights on the KU pre- and post-game broadcasts. In between? Enough to fill a book about life experiences that required strength and perseverance through difficult times. In “Without You: A Story About Thanks and Appreciation,” Gueldner writes about the challenges he's faced in the years after his playing career, including battling back from Stage Four carcinoma cancer at age 41. “I was asked by my doctors at the time if I would be willing to counsel others who had a similar type of cancer, and I did,” Gueldner said on SportsBeat KC, The Star's daily sports podcast. “That kind of got the wheels turning. Can I help other people? Can I share my story?” He does, and Gueldner shares his approach to confronting other life obstacles like divorce and failed business ventures along the way. Of course there's basketball. As a sophomore, Gueldner became a starter for the Danny Manning-led 1988 team 20 games into a season that was headed nowhere. KU was being asked about NIT dates for Allen Field House. But fortunes soon changed for the team coached by Larry Brown. A few weeks later, the Jayhawks defeated Oklahoma at Kemper Arena to win the national title. “People started to find their role and assume their role,” Gueldner said. “I was able to guard people and not screw up.” The program's fourth NCAA championship, the second for Coach Bill Self, was captured in April as Kansas overcame the largest halftime deficit to win a title game. From the first play, things were different for the Kansas City Chiefs this week. Tampa Bay fumbled away the opening kickoff, the Chiefs got a Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce touchdown pass two plays later and they were on their way to a 41-31 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After the game, Star reporters and columnists on site talked about the victory with host Blair Kerkhoff. It was an all-around solid effort from a team coming off its worst game a week earlier in the loss at Indianapolis. Sunday, the offensive line was especially good, leading a running game that produced a season-best 189 yards. Mahomes and Kelce had milestone moments. L'Jarius Sneed contributed a big strip sack. The Bucs hardly used their rushing offense and were held to three yards on the ground. Enjoy the conversation, which started as a SportsBeat Live. Story link: Past Super Bowl loss? The first game of the MLB season's second quarter ended like the final game of the first for the Royals: A loss after gaining a sizable lead. Sunday it happened against the Minnesota Twins, when the Royals lost 7-6, squandering a six-run lead after seven innings. On Monday, the Royals jumped on Arizona for four first-inning runs but couldn't make it hold up in a 9-5 loss. So it's five straight losses and tied for last place in the AL Central for the Royals. Frustrations mount, but are there any quick fixes? It may be time to charge a rebuilding process with some younger players at the expense of veterans like first baseman Carlos Santana. Beat writer Lynn Worthy and columnists Vahe Gregorian and Sam McDowell share their thoughts on what may be in store for the Royals. The show started as a SportsBeat Live. Royals' record after 40 games since 2018 (excluding shortened 2020 season) 2022: 14-26 2021: 18-22 (74-88 final record) 2019: 14-26 (59-103) 2018: 13-27 (58-104) Story links: Royals start fast but can't keep pace as Zack Greinke gives up 7 in loss at Arizona Royals' 7-6 loss to the Twins may have been a breaking point for Kansas City fans Learn more about your ad choices. It's racing weekend in Kansas City, and Kansas Speedway will be the site of three races: the Dutch Boy 150 ARCA race and Heart of America 200 trucks run on Saturday and NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400 on Sunday. It's the first time since 2019 that a scheduled spring-racing event at Kansas Speedway will not be directly affected by the pandemic. On today's episode of The Star's SportsBeat KC podcast, we chat with veteran sportswriter Randy Covitz, who has covered every Cup race at Kansas since the track's inaugural season in 2001. He previews Sunday's marquee race and discusses the impact of the new Next Gen cars. After a break, Kansas Speedway president Pat Warren talks about how the track and NASCAR have battled through the previous two years of disruptions, delays and limited fans. The Royals can't find any momentum. Last week, after a 7-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, they were hammered 10-0 the next day. After taking the first game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, the Royals dropped the second game and lost the series on Monday. Lack of clutch hitting continues to be the biggest issue. Slugger Salvador Perez seems to be coming out of his malaise with two hits in each of his last three games, raising his batting average by nearly 40 points. But Whit Merrifield continues to be mired in a season-long slump. On today's SportsBeat KC podcast, we sort through it all with beat writer Lynn Worthy and columnist Sam McDowell. Plenty went wrong for the Royals last weekend in Seattle, where the Mariners swept a three-game series and extended the Royals' losing streak to four. On today's SportsBeat KC podcast, beat writer Lynn Worthy and columnists Sam McDowell and Vahe Gregorian discuss how the Royals can alter the course. You'll also hear from right fielder Whit Merrifield, who had a frank discussion about his slump and why he believes he and the Royals are close to turning things around. It's a busy week in sports with the NBA Playoffs, the end of hockey's regular season, baseball, golf, tennis, auto racing. And the biggest event of them all — the NFL Draft. The three-day event begins Thursday and the Chiefs enter as one of the busiest teams with 12 selections. Will they use them all, trade up for position, trade down for more picks? The draft also signals something of a pivot point for the Chiefs, who are restocking a team that has lost several impact players from the previous season. Each of the draft's three days should bring plenty of drama for the Chiefs, and on today's SportsBeat KC podcast, beat writer Herbie Teope breaks it down and projects what he believes what will happen with the team's two first-round picks.
