Herlinda Heras and Kevin McGee Kevin McGee from Anderson Valley Brewing Company joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. AVBC is the official brewery of the 2024 Great Dickens Christmas Fair at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Kevin McGee has been on this show a few times, most recently this episode on May 2, 2024. Anderson Valley Brewing Company has been in business for 37 years. Their entire property is now licensed as a beer tasting room. There is a disc golf course on the site now. They like to offer an experience a little more memorable than just drinking a beer. His family bought the company in 2019 and they also relaunched the Healdsburg Beer Company. Visit Russian River Brewing Co. on 4th St. and at their Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for hours, menus and beers on tap. Kevin tried making wine at home but without success. His wife suggested he try beer, so he changed his business plan in 2007. At the time it was hard to sell the beer, but Guy Fieri's restaurant was one of the first customers. AVBC was the first brewery to use only solar energy. They also have a completely self-contained water system that draws water from wells on the property and returns all their used water to the ground on site. The Great Dickens Christmas Fair This year AVBC is the official brewery of the Great Dickens Christmas Fair at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, from November 23 through December 22, from 10am-6pm.

Bad news keeps coming for craft beerA commenter online noted, "I thought they were the good guys," when discussing a recent round of massive layoffs at Tilray-owned breweries. We did too. Good guys or not, when breweries are owned by a huge corporation most (all?) of the emotional attachment is removed from ownership. Where a family-owned brewery may push through tough times and try to keep people working, for better or worse, a large corporation has no interest in such tomfoolery. Plus, when you merge several breweries you're definitely going to have some duplication of duties in the workforce. And with that said Tilray cleaned house at 10 Barrel, Sweetwater, and Terrapin. No one was safe with Terrapin laying off brewery co-founder Spike Buckowski and President Dustin Watts. The entire Innovation Brewing team at 10 Barrel was let go, and several salespeople across all three breweries. This news always sucks, but this one hit us close to home with many of our friends impacted. In other news... Anderson Valley Brewing is for sale. President and CEO Kevin McGee joined us in March (Beer Guys Radio Ep. 408) and everything seemed great then. His plan was for the brewery to be a multi-generational venture. Looks like those plans have changed. The insane costs of attending an NFL gameAccording to data from bookies.com taking your family of 4 to an NFL game could cost you nearly $2,000 (including beers) if you're going to see the Lions. Their numbers include the cheapest tickets, parking, food, sodas, and beer. If you want a more affordable experience you better be a Jaguars fan. See all the data here.We can't take much more over here, y'all. We need some good news for beer. Well, at least we have beer.Cheers!TimThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! This morning the McGrail Inquiry has been hearing evidence from the Chief Minister. The former Police Commissioner Ian McGrail has accused Fabian Picardo of forcing him to leave the force early after investigating Mr Picardo's business partner and close friend. Mr Picardo has told the Inquiry his relationship with the former Police Commissioner changed following the incident in Spanish waters that led to two deaths. The CM's evidence is that Mr McGrail had to leave his job because there was a “catastrosphic loss of confidence” in him.If you have ever had to call for an ambulance, your call would have gone through the Gibraltar Fire & Rescue Service. But after 20 years the service has been handed over to the GHA along with a new dispatch system. Your call will now be managed by GHA dispatchers and Clinicians. To tell us more we welcomed GHA Director General, Kevin McGee to the studio. And, have you ever considered a career in Banking? Anderson Valley Brewing Co. CEO Kevin McGee joins Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke sitting in for Steve Jaxon, and Herlinda Heras. The last time Kevin was on Brew Ha Ha was this episode from last November. Also, AVBC brewmaster Fal Allen has been on Brew Ha Ha many times. His last appearance was this episode in September 2023. Tara Nurin is also in the studio today for the live Brew Ha Ha radio show, and her part of the conversation is on this podcast episode. Wellness and mental health is an important topic in the brewing industry, especially after the uncertainty and stress of the last few years. Listen to Tara Nurin speaking about that today, on this podcast episode. Under the new owners of AVBC, the company expanded its suite of mental health benefits for employees. They also have opened pathways for people to have access to therapy. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Their first tasting is the Black Light, 95 calories, and it is black like a stout even if it is a light. It won the European Beer Star Award, another silver medal two years ago and it won the Brussels Beer Challenge last year. They love this beer. It's great to have a new beer that is so successful. There weren't a lot of good light craft beers. They started with the intention of making a good tasting beer and it happened to be light, at 3.8% ABV. It gets its black color from black rice, not from blackened malt as usual with dark beers. This was Fal Allen's invention. He also wanted to make a Pilsner, which is The Pilsner under ABVC's label. Summer Solstice is another periodic beer that has some devoted fans. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Anderson Valley Brewing Co has been practicing sustainable brewing for long before Kevin became CEO. They use only water drawn from wells on their property and they return all their used water to the ground. It is a zero-effluent operation. Visit Homerun Pizza, home of the Knuckleball! Fresh pizza dough made from scratch daily, la pizza è deliziosa! They expect about 3000 people at the Booneville Beer Fest on Sat. May 4, May the fourth be with you, Star Wars fans. Exploring the Future of Beer and Beyond with Anderson Valley BrewingAnderson Valley Brewing president and CEO Kevin McGee joins us this week to discuss NA beer, FOMO, keeping it classic, and sustainability. The world of beer is constantly evolving, and we dive into some of the exciting trends and hidden gems that are shaping the industry. NA Beer Stats and Future: A Sobering RiseNon-alcoholic (NA) beers are no longer the afterthought at the party. Thanks to a growing health-conscious population and innovative brewing techniques, NA beers are experiencing a surge in popularity. The global NA beer market is expected to reach a staggering $40 billion by 2033. This trend suggests a future where delicious, alcohol-free options are readily available for everyone. But others aren't impressed with NA beer's growth, so is it "the next big thing," or not?Beer Solera: A History Steeped in TraditionFor a taste of history, let's explore the Solera method. This unique aging process involves stacking partially filled barrels, blending aged and young beer to create complex flavors. Imagine a family recipe passed down through generations, each adding their own twist – that's the essence of Solera!Surviving & Thriving in Beer Today: Beyond the HypeBut the craft beer scene isn't just about chasing trends. In a saturated market, breweries need to focus on building a loyal customer base and focusing on some key points like quality and consistency. As the beer market becomes saturated with choices, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is losing its MO. If the latest big pastry stout or juicy and hazy IPA has another bigger and juicier and hazier release the next week, then we aren't really missing anything if we miss one. Wild One-Offs Are Good For One Time, But Consistency is King. Limited-edition releases can be exciting, but breweries that consistently deliver quality beers are the ones that stand the test of time.Evolution: More Than Just The BeerThe craft beer scene is about more than just the beverage itself. It's about fostering a culture of community, creativity, and exploration. Let's celebrate the stories behind the beers, the passion of the brewers, and the ever-evolving landscape of this fascinating industry.Decoding Boontling & Anderson Valley's Sustainability EffortsEver heard of Boontling? It's a nearly extinct language spoken by the indigenous people of the Anderson Valley region. The brewery honors this heritaThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! This week's Brewbound Podcast features two on location interviews from the California Craft Beer Summit in Sacramento. Then, Full Circle owner Arthur Moye explores plans for the Speakeasy brand, which his company acquired a year ago, and how he's executing a house-of-brands strategy with those craft brands and Sonoma Cider. Plus, the Brewbound team discusses Sazerac's planned acquisition of ready-to-drink cocktail maker BuzzBallz, Tilray's ambitious innovation strategy and Sheehan's continued distributor sell off. The show also features a game of Another Round or Tabbing on whether mango is the flavor of 2024.

Herlinda Heras and Kevin McGee Kevin McGee, President and CEO of Anderson Valley Brewing Co, AVBC, joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha. The foundation of brewery dates to 35 years ago. It is the world's first solar powered brewery. Kevin explains how they recently streamlined their lineup of IPAs, including their classic west coast IPA, Hop Ottin'. They are tasting the Coastal Ale which is a partnership with the Surfrider foundation. Anderson Valley Brewing Co. will be taking over the ale stands at the Dickens Christmas Village in the Cow Palace in San Francisco. They will be pouring 11 different beers. Some of them are seasonal, like the Winter Solstice beer. Herlinda describes the fun and excitement at the Dickens Christmas Village, including old fashioned Victorian games and a fencing school. There are character actors and skillful character portrayals of Charles Dickens himself as well as many characters from the story A Christmas Carol. They perform plays and there is tea time, to do a proper British tea and also a Sherlock Holmes mystery attraction too. Boontling The name of one of their beers, Baal Hornin' means good drinking in Boontling, the local dialect. Since 1997, every year Anderson Valley Brewing Co. has hosted the Booneville Beer Festival. Proceeds going to hyper-local charities, within 10 or 20 miles of the brewery. Over the years they have raised over 1.8 million dollars. The next Beer Fest is Saturday, May 4, 2024. If you visit Booneville, don't try to drive home too late in the day. The road is perilous, but there are lots of lodging opportunities around. The next tasting is the Winter Solstice beer. It is rich tasting and at 6.9% ABV it is stronger than the easy drinking varieties. Beer plus deer = beer, hence Barkley the mascot of Anderson Valley Brewing Co., a bear with antlers.

On the couch tonight: Cherise Charleswell, author of Real Talk Tips: Laugh-Out-Loud Pointers and Suggestions for the Morally Challenged, Socially Inept, & the People Who Love Them and Comedian Kevin McGee.
