TSN's Frankie Corrado shares his thoughts on the Memorial Cup and the Kitchener Rangers, Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, Mitch Marner blocking shots, and Zach Werenski winning his first Norris Trophy.
Lots to cover this week including, of course, a wrap from the Memorial Cup in Kelowna where the OHL won its third straight tournament title. And could anyone really touch the Kitchener Rangers this year? Plus, next year's tournament hosts -- the Guelph Storm -- get some bad news as defenseman Quinn Beauchesne bolts for the NCAA. If a guy is turning down a guaranteed opportunity to play in the Memorial Cup, what does this tell us about the CHL versus the NCAA? The winds of change also continue to blow through Niagara and Owen Sound, the Soo are planning some upgrades, the Brantford Bulldogs are looking for their next head coach, and Farwell and Dan have some thoughts about proposed changes to the Memorial Cup format. If league executives are listening, there's one proposed change that should be dismissed immediately. The OHL Podcast is supported by Draft Kings Sportsbook. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Finally, Dregs gave us his Stanley Cup Final preview, locked in his championship pick, and provided the latest on the Oilers' coaching search. A lot of people thought the Kitchener Rangers had the team to win the Ontario Hockey League this season, but did anyone really expect a Finals sweep? The Rangers brought their brooms to Barrie and finished the playoffs with a tidy record of 16-2. Dan and Farwell have thoughts on the series itself and the playoffs that were, before moving into other issues including the defection of Ethan Belchetz to the NCAA and the arrival of private equity funding in the OHL (via Owen Sound). While the mood is decidedly 'woe is Windsor' with the looming loss of Belchetz and Nesbitt to U.S. college programs, fans are upbeat at the Bayshore as the new ownership group strikes all the right notes. Farwell and Dan might not be dancing to the music, though. Finally, though it's been said many times, many ways, we'd really like to see better behaviour in the arena. For the fourth time in five years, the Kitchener Rangers and Windsor Spitfires renewed their playoff rivalry. And for the third straight year, the ending was the same. The guys break down a West final that was as close as five games could get, but one in which Windsor just couldn't get over the top. Again. Meantime, over in the East, we finally got a Game 7! But nobody expected that when Brantford was up 3-1 in the series, did they?? Off the ice, there are big rumours in the OHL's smallest market as the Owen Sound Attack are about to be sold. At least part of them. We think. The rumour mill continues to grind in the OHL and it turns out the Attack may not be the only team on the market. Plus, Kade O'Rourke will not be granted exceptional status and the guys have some news about the upcoming OHL and Import drafts. You're in the right place to get it all. He shares stories about learning to channel his intensity, the legendary 1994 Eastern Conference Final, winning three championships with three different coaches, and the art of delivering clean, devastating hits while never finishing a season as a minus player.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] - Scott Stevens joins as the latest guest on NHL Wraparound Hall of Fame Edition, introduced as perhaps the greatest open-ice hitter ever.[01:00] - The modern fighting phenomenon: why players have to fight after clean hits today versus Stevens' era when hitting was just part of the game.[03:00] - Stevens' philosophy on clean hits: turning your cheek and letting opponents take penalties rather than engaging after legal contact.[04:00] - The Nick Foligno-Brendan Smith fight after the Connor Bedard hit in New Jersey - automatic response to clean contact.[05:00] - Junior hockey glory: winning the Memorial Cup with the Kitchener Rangers and wearing number three before switching to the iconic number four.[06:00] - The number evolution: three in Washington, two in St. Louis, and finally four in New Jersey (Kenny Daneyko had three).[07:00] - NHL debut magic: first goal on first shot against Eddie Mio and the Rangers at Madison Square Garden with his parents watching.[08:00] - Brian Murray's pivotal advice: channeling emotion to stay on the ice more and finding the fine art of playing on the edge without crossing it.[09:00] - Penalty minute transformation: from 200+ PIMs four times in first 12 seasons to barely exceeding 100 in final 10 years.[10:00] - The mentorship of Brian Engblom: sitting together before every game, studying opponents' tendencies, learning what to watch for on every forward.[12:00] - Leadership philosophy: leading by example, not with words - showing up ready to practice and compete every single day.[13:00] - Practice intensity: hitting teammates with their heads down when upset, making sure everyone knew winning mattered above all else.[14:00] - The difficult St. Louis departure: holding out after signing as a free agent, buying and selling houses, having a newborn and 16-month-old.[15:00] - Lou Lamoriello's class: picking up the family at the airport with car seats, making sure they were comfortable and settled in New Jersey.[16:00] - The awkward captaincy transition: taking the "C" from Bruce Driver and asking for his continued help with organization and scheduling.[18:00] - Group Two free agency explained: the stunning compensation system and how David Poile chose not to match Washington's offer.[19:00] - The Brendan Shanahan equalization: becoming the compensation award over Curtis Joseph and Rod Brind'Amour during Canada Cup training camp.[21:00] - The 1994 Eastern Conference Final: that Devils team as potentially the best personnel-wise, just not ready to win yet.[23:00] - The 1995 championship run: learning from 1994's pain, getting better through the playoffs, and feeling invincible against Detroit in the sweep.[25:00] - Learning from losses: gaining experience from mistakes and using that hurt to take the next step as a team and individuals.[26:00] - Three coaches, three Cups: Jacques Lemaire's revolutionary systems teaching, feeling like a kid learning positioning and stick detail.[27:00] - The Lemaire revelation: learning more in year 13 than all previous years combined, understanding two-on-ones and positional play.[28:00] - Larry Robinson's gutsy late-season takeover: Lou...
It may still be early, but a couple of perennial Western Conference heavyweights are headed in opposite directions as the Windsor Spitfires surge and the London Knights struggle. Speaking of Western Conference heavyweights, what's going on back in Finland that's keeping Oscar Hemming from playing with the Kitchener Rangers? Farwell and Dan also do a deep dive into the CHL Team of the Century, giving you the scoop on a new documentary coming out later this month while talking about some big teams from the past that had to be in consideration for the title. And don't forget our weekly Wraparound as we check in on every market, plus the Prospect of the Week that focuses on an NHL draft eligible player that caught our eye. The NHL has a long history of players who have made their mark as open-ice hitters, perhaps none who delivered more punishment than Scott Stevens. The 2007 Hall of Fame inductee joins Neil and Vic to talk playing style, leadership and captaincy and winning three Stanley Cups in New Jersey under three different head coaches.IN THIS EPISODE:[01:44] - Neil opens about one of his pet peeves: a player having to answer for delivering a big hit. As Stevens shares, it's a far cry from when he played.[04:06] - Neil takes Scott back to his days as a Ranger...a Kitchener Ranger, where he had his number 3 retired. That number followed him to Washington, then changed when he went to St. Louis and, later, New Jersey.[06:07] - First NHL Game, October 6, 1982.[06:54] - Highly emotional in his early years in the NHL, Stevens shares his turning point took where learned he could maintain his intensity and keep his emotions more in check.[09:34] - Scott's mentors upon his arrival in Washington in 1982.[11:09] - Captain's have varying leadership styles. For Stevens, it was always less about words and more about setting examples through action.[13:11] - After spending his first eight seasons in Washington, Stevens signed as a free agent in St. Louis in 1990 only to be awarded to New Jersey as compensation for the Blues signing Brendan Shanahan a year later.[15:08] - The acclimation to new teammates in New Jersey and assuming the Devils captaincy in his second season with the team.[16:46] - Neil explains the Group I/Group II free agency in that era which left Stevens future in the hands of an arbitrator. Scott also notes the emotions waiting for the decision to come down.[20:16] - As captain of the three New Jersey Cup winners in 1995, 2000 and 2003, was the best Devils team ever one that did not capture a title?[22:19] - The first Cup in 1995 following a half-season lockout.[24:37] - Stevens comments on the three different head coaches behind the bench for those Stanley Cup wins.[30:31] - In each of those championship seasons, a signature hit was delivered to players with their heads down. According to Stevens, it was that physical play which helped the other parts of his game.[31:55] - Considering the ferocity of Stevens open-ice hits, the number of elbowing penalties he incurred in a 22-season career might surprise you.[34:03] - A little comic relief.[35:55] - The first-ever Devil to have his number retired.[37:25] - Neil wraps up the interview revealing to Scott that they actually had a common defense partner at different points in their careers.[39:47] - Closing words on the Scott Stevens interview.X: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/NHL Wraparound Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/#NHLWraparound #ShortShifts #NYCentric #StanleyCupdate #NeilSmith #VicMorren #NHL #CelebritySeries #HallofFameEdition #ScottStevens #WashingtonCapitals #St.LouisBlues #NewJerseyDevils #EddieShore #RedHorner #BillBarilko #LeoBoivin #JacobTrouba #ConnorBedard #NickFoligno #BrendanSmith #KitchenerRangers #KenDaneyko #MylesO'Connor #LouLamoriello #BobbyOrr #AlMacInnis #EdMio #BryanMurray #SteveYzerman #RodLangway #BrianEngblom #CraigLaughlin #DougJarvis #MikeGartner #BruceDriver #BrendanShanahan #CurtisJoseph #RodBrind'Amour #DavidPoile #AdamGraves #JasonArnott #DetroitRedWings #DallasStars #AnaheimDucks #MarkMessier #JacquesLemaire #LarryRobinson #JacquesCaron #RobbieFtorek #PatBurns #BobbyCarpenter #SlavaKozlov #EricLindros #PaulKariya #TheThreeStooges #DaytonGems #DwightSchofield #WayneGretzky #BernieParent #RonFrancis #JimGregory #TorontoMapleLeafs

Critics claimed we'd never see the day, but ground has been broken on a new arena for Sudbury. The guys have a discussion and offer a condition for the move to new digs in the Nickel City. Meantime, an arena just as old as Sudbury's is going to get some new additions as the Kitchener Rangers install a "Level of Legacy." And if you thought the USHL was going down with a whimper as the OHL talks about "aggressive expansion," well, you haven't been listening to USHL Commissioner Glenn Hefferan. Farwell and Dan also have a look at every market in the league with the weekly Wraparound, which hints at some surprises and raises some concerns. And speaking of concerns, why are fans in Ottawa worried about the coaching of their unbeaten team?? Plus, your first Prospects of the Week this season and a story that connects an OHL player from 75 years ago with an OHL player on the ice today. We've got all of this for you this week, plus stories about broken down Zambonis and references to Carrot Top. And we all know that there's only one place you're getting content like this. The Detroit Red Wings offseason changes have already begun, with more potentially on the way. Tune in as we're joined by Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit (and Winged Wheel Podcast contributor) on this episode, opening by discussing the report that Todd McLellan, Steve Yzerman, and the Red Wings have moved on from goaltending coach Alex Westlund, and how this relates to Hockeytown's issues in net over the years: can new coaching help, or is the rotating group of Cam Talbot, Petr Mrazek, Alex Lyon, and others to blame? How does this affect Sebastian Cossa coming up (with Trey Augustine a ways away) (3:40)? Next, Max offers his thoughts on Steve Yzerman's biggest holes and offseason tasks to help the Red Wings roster: what support does Detroit need for Dylan Larkin, Patrick Kane, Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, and Marco Kasper at forward - like Mitch Marner or Nikolaj Ehlers? Do they need to prioritize a defenseman to help Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson - like Gavrikov? Can Nate Danielson, Carter Mazur, Axel Sandin Pellikka, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, or others be the answer (9:35)? After that, a comprehensive NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs update, including Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson in a lively bench brawl between Washington and Montreal, the Leafs dominating Tkachuk's Senators, the Lightning and Panthers trading majors (and Cooper and Maurice exchanging banter) in the Battle of Florida, Connor Hellebuyck collapsing for the Winnipeg Jets, TNT not calling games in person, & plenty more (29:25). We then get into our 2025 NHL Draft Prospect Profile on Cameron Reid: can the Kitchener Rangers defenseman be of interest for the Red Wings, or is someone like Aitcheson or Smith for attractive for Steve Yzerman and Detroit, who will want more size (1:02:45)? All of that and plenty more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:12:20) - enjoy! It's time for a reset. A reminder. A mission statement. Now more than three years and more than 500 episodes into this podcast, it has evolved into a place where OHL fans can engage, interact, and grow their interest in the league. In order to do that, though, we need the access to the people involved in the game. We've always had that, until we didn't. And when that access changed this week, Farwell took it personally. So, brace yourself for a no-holds-barred response to the London Knights going against league policy and barring media access to their team before a game. You'll get some in-depth insight into broadcasting, owning mistakes, how Farwell feels about arriving at this place with an OHL team, and his hopes for moving forward. Can you handle the truth? Our weekly Wraparound is chock full of interesting info about every team, we'll talk about those annoying homers, and there's a team hoping to negotiate a contract extension with its coach. Plus, our Prospects of the Week! So, basically, everything you'd expect from your premiere source for OHL information. The OHL Podcast is supported by Draft Kings Sportsbook.
