Kristen Ulmer is a thought leader, master facilitator and fear/anxiety expert. Her education comes from practical, real- world experience, starting with being a mogul specialist on the US Ski Team. Kristen then became more notoriously recognized as the best female big mountain extreme skier in the world, a status she kept for 12 years. Known for big cliff jumps and you-fall-you die descents, she became sponsored by the likes of Red Bull, Ralph Lauren, and Nikon, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame September of 2019. Her mastery of other danger sports such as paragliding, ice and rock climbing, and adventure mountain biking also gained her the outdoor industry vote as most extreme “fearless” woman athlete in North America. After retiring in 2003, she spent the next 15 years studying Zen Buddhism. Her current work as a facilitator and teacher is the culmination of her decades-long experiences becoming intimate with fear. In this episode, Kristen and I explore: -Kristen's view that fear underlies other emotions such as anxiety, anger, sadness, and excitement. -Kristen's own unhealthy relationship to fear, and when extreme behaviors turn into unhealthy addictions. -How to be "intimate" with fear versus trying to conquer it or understand it intellectually. -Seeing fear as "person" who needs to be accepted and validated (versus controlled). -Re-imagining anxiety, PTSD, and mental health through Kristen's paradigm of understanding fear. -How fear gets conditioned in childhood. -How meditation and spirituality can inadvertently interfere with feeling fear. -Non-resistance and "being in love" with our emotions. -How our culture reinforces resistance and distraction from our emotions. -How Kristen's model compares and contrasts with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). -Noticing your resistance patterns as the first step to being "intimate" with fear. -The four levels of working with fear. -Getting into "flow" with fear. In this episode Nicole and Sarah host Kristen Ulmer. Kristen is a high performance facilitator and fear/anxiety expert who draws from her tenure as the Hall of Fame most ‘fearless' woman extreme skier in the world for 12 years, from studying Zen for 15 years, and from facilitating over ten thousand clients on the subjects of fear, anxiety and achieving flow states.Kristen grew up in Henniker, New Hampshire skiing at Pat's Peak. Kristen loved skiing from a very young age, but did not get serious about skiing until age 16.  Kristen went to college in Utah and starting skiing moguls. Although she had almost no formal ski training, she made the US Ski Team!  She could not afford to stay on the US Ski Team, so she switched over to big mountain extreme skiing and filming in movies. Kristen tell us more about film skiing and the film skiing industry. Kristen has filmed 24 ski movies with producers like Warren Miller and Teton Gravity.  Kristen was the one female skier in this very male dominated industry.  Kristen tells us about her addiction to fear (her poor parents!) that came out of her ski experiences. An experience at Burning Man (an arts festival in the desert), inspired Kristen to quit her ski media career.  She started a mindset only ski camp led by a zen master (who she then studied with for 15 years). There is a camp session coming up at the end of March in Alta, Utah. Kristen's book, The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won't Work and What to Do Instead  is a great place to start navigating your own relationship with fears (not conquering them!).  The magic comes from the belief that we are not trying to avoid fear, but instead change our relationship with fear.Keep up with the Latest from KristenWebsite: https://kristenulmer.comArt of Fear Ski CampTed Talk: https://youtu.be/MLDeef-YolYInstagram: https://instagram.com/kristen.ulmerFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ulmer.kristen/Please Help Support our Podcast:We have a full list of great ski books for kids!Check out the Ski Pack at www.puremountainfun.com and use code SKIMOMS2023 for 20% off your orderJoin the Ski Moms Fun Community!Follow us on Apple Podcasts and please rate and share with a friend!Join the Ski Moms Fun Community! A New Hampshire native, Ulmer discovered skiing as a young girl, skipping school to hit the slopes at lunch time. Friends told her about skiing in Utah. Her mom found a $40 one-way airline ticket. And she headed west, making Salt Lake City her home. She spent every waking moment skiing the bumps at Snowbird. Her breakthrough came after an all-day drive out I-80 to California, sleeping overnight freezing in her car in a ski area parking lot, then hucking herself off a huge cliff doing a trick she had never attempted. She didn't know it at the time, but she had found fear, embraced it and danced with fear to become one of the world's most well known big mountain skiers and film stars, with her image beaming from the covers of ski magazines.Today, Ulmer is a thought leader, high performance facilitator, and fear/anxiety expert who draws from her tenure as the best woman extreme skier in the world, studying Zen and from facilitating thousands of clients. What is it about fear that oftentimes defines what we do, or don't do? What does it take to become fearless (Ulmer says it isn't possible, so don't try). And how can we improve our lives, and our skiing, if we simply embrace fear?Ulmer still lives in the Salt Lake City foothills and channels her energy into helping others. Her book, The Art of Fear, is a fascinating look into how you, as a business leader, skier or everyday human, can embrace fear. Her on-snow camps (which, by the way, sell out) counsel skiers and riders on how they, too, can embrace fear to improve their skiing. She's worked with the likes of free solo climber Alex Hannawald to big wave surfer Laird Hamilton. But she also loves working with everyday skiers and riders - just like you and I!Kristen Ulmer is one of the truly fascinating figures in the landscape of Utah skiing. This episode of Last Chair is a fascinating insight into a Hall of Fame skier whose understanding of embracing fear has shaped her life and the lives of those around her.How did you get into skiing?I grew up in New Hampshire in a small town - Pat's Peak ski area, 700 vertical feet. I grew up in a house that was built in 1786 and it hadn't been remodeled. Now think about that for a sec. I just went skiing with my girlfriends because that's what they did. And then right around age 15, 16, I became really into skiing and I would skip out of school to go skiing during lunch breaks. And then I finally got caught my senior year. I almost didn't get to graduate because I had so many detentions from skipping school to go skiing. But I skied in jeans until I was 20 years old. What motivated you to get into skiing as a career?I had absolutely no goals whatsoever, and this is probably one of the strangest things about my ski career. I also was like the last person to be chosen for elementary and high school, not just soccer, but sports teams - like I was not athletic at all, and I just was obsessed with skiing when I moved to Snowbird in Utah. I started hanging out with a bunch of people that were competing in moguls, and I just wanted to hang out with them and go on road trips. So that's why I started competing. What does it mean to be fearless?People misunderstand people they admire who do incredibly scary things, whether it be skiing or people who run the world or, you know, businessmen and women - people that take incredible risks in any way, shape or form. We have this perception and this ideology that these people are fearless and that is not the case. Nobody's fearless. When I first became a fear expert, I Googled it and I realized that there's no other people out there that are willing to call themselves fear experts because we assume that people that are fear experts, A, are fearless and B, can teach other people how to be fearless. And I am neither of those. Nobody's fearless. It's not only impossible, but it's undesirable.Did you feel fear when you hucked that first cliff in front of the cameras?Well, you'd think that fear would be going through somebody's mind. A book which radically challenges existing norms about this misunderstood emotion. At 12:08 Kristen shares the first 3 (of four) levels to becoming intimate with fear. "See fear as a person, like a roommate in your life. You know, if you're in resistance to that roommate, you're going to have issues at home - right - and home being your body. If you accept that, ok they're going to be a part of my life, there's nothing I can do about it, ya know, it's a step in the right direction... but it's still offensive to fear. The third level, is where it gets really interesting, cause now you're no longer dealing with your fear intellectually, you're now dealing with it emotionally and physically, as you embrace your fear. Now, imagine if you embrace the roommate, you're no longer in your head, you're no longer thinking, you're now in your body, and having a physical experience."The Fearless Women Podcastfearlesswomenpodcast@gmail.comThe Beacon AgencySponsors:BDCLockheed MartinExport Development Canada

We all feel fear,  but what do you do when it comes over you? For many the answer is to let it drive your actions and how you approach your life. But what if you could feel the fear, understand its place in your life, and still make strides towards your goals? You can!   There are two books that have been instrumental in how I talk about and think about fear. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert and The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What To Do Instead by Kristen Ulmer. In both, the authors share ways to approach fear without losing your drive or passion.    In Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert writes a letter to fear. She lets fear know that he can come along on the ride with creativity, but that he’s there as an observer only. He doesn’t get to talk, share an opinion, mess with the music, and most importantly, he’s not allowed to drive.    Isn’t it amazing to think about talking to your fears in this way? Acknowledge that they exist but then remind them who is boss and what their role is in your life?    I think that is so empowering and it’s helped me to rethink the role of fear in my life and my business. Listen as I share my insights about The Art of Fear as well and why I use both of these books with my own coaching clients. I’m also sharing my tips on approaching fear with a healthy respect and perspective.    “So many times in my own life, fear was the driver.” Dr. Errin Weisman   In this episode: [01:20] We are talking about fear today.
