Kristen Ulmer is a thought leader, master facilitator and fear/anxiety expert. Her education comes from practical, real- world experience, starting with being a mogul specialist on the US Ski Team. Kristen then became more notoriously recognized as the best female big mountain extreme skier in the world, a status she kept for 12 years. Known for big cliff jumps and you-fall-you die descents, she became sponsored by the likes of Red Bull, Ralph Lauren, and Nikon, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame September of 2019. Her mastery of other danger sports such as paragliding, ice and rock climbing, and adventure mountain biking also gained her the outdoor industry vote as most extreme “fearless” woman athlete in North America. After retiring in 2003, she spent the next 15 years studying Zen Buddhism. Her current work as a facilitator and teacher is the culmination of her decades-long experiences becoming intimate with fear. In this episode, Kristen and I explore: -Kristen's view that fear underlies other emotions such as anxiety, anger, sadness, and excitement. -Kristen's own unhealthy relationship to fear, and when extreme behaviors turn into unhealthy addictions. -How to be "intimate" with fear versus trying to conquer it or understand it intellectually. -Seeing fear as "person" who needs to be accepted and validated (versus controlled). -Re-imagining anxiety, PTSD, and mental health through Kristen's paradigm of understanding fear. -How fear gets conditioned in childhood. -How meditation and spirituality can inadvertently interfere with feeling fear. -Non-resistance and "being in love" with our emotions. -How our culture reinforces resistance and distraction from our emotions. -How Kristen's model compares and contrasts with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). -Noticing your resistance patterns as the first step to being "intimate" with fear. -The four levels of working with fear. -Getting into "flow" with fear. In this episode Nicole and Sarah host Kristen Ulmer. Kristen is a high performance facilitator and fear/anxiety expert who draws from her tenure as the Hall of Fame most ‘fearless' woman extreme skier in the world for 12 years, from studying Zen for 15 years, and from facilitating over ten thousand clients on the subjects of fear, anxiety and achieving flow states.Kristen grew up in Henniker, New Hampshire skiing at Pat's Peak. Kristen loved skiing from a very young age, but did not get serious about skiing until age 16.  Kristen went to college in Utah and starting skiing moguls. Although she had almost no formal ski training, she made the US Ski Team!  She could not afford to stay on the US Ski Team, so she switched over to big mountain extreme skiing and filming in movies. Kristen tell us more about film skiing and the film skiing industry. Kristen has filmed 24 ski movies with producers like Warren Miller and Teton Gravity.  Kristen was the one female skier in this very male dominated industry.  Kristen tells us about her addiction to fear (her poor parents!) that came out of her ski experiences. An experience at Burning Man (an arts festival in the desert), inspired Kristen to quit her ski media career.  She started a mindset only ski camp led by a zen master (who she then studied with for 15 years). There is a camp session coming up at the end of March in Alta, Utah. Kristen's book, The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won't Work and What to Do Instead  is a great place to start navigating your own relationship with fears (not conquering them!).  The magic comes from the belief that we are not trying to avoid fear, but instead change our relationship with fear.Keep up with the Latest from KristenWebsite: https://kristenulmer.comArt of Fear Ski CampTed Talk: https://youtu.be/MLDeef-YolYInstagram: https://instagram.com/kristen.ulmerFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ulmer.kristen/Please Help Support our Podcast:We have a full list of great ski books for kids!Check out the Ski Pack at www.puremountainfun.com and use code SKIMOMS2023 for 20% off your orderJoin the Ski Moms Fun Community!Follow us on Apple Podcasts and please rate and share with a friend!Join the Ski Moms Fun Community! Kristen was also voted the most fearless woman athlete in North America, by the outdoor industry, beating out all other women athletes (specially women extreme athletes). She is the author of: The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What to Do Instead. A book which radically challenges existing norms about this misunderstood emotion. At 12:08 Kristen shares the first 3 (of four) levels to becoming intimate with fear. "See fear as a person, like a roommate in your life. You know, if you're in resistance to that roommate, you're going to have issues at home - right - and home being your body. If you accept that, ok they're going to be a part of my life, there's nothing I can do about it, ya know, it's a step in the right direction... but it's still offensive to fear. The third level, is where it gets really interesting, cause now you're no longer dealing with your fear intellectually, you're now dealing with it emotionally and physically, as you embrace your fear. Now, imagine if you embrace the roommate, you're no longer in your head, you're no longer thinking, you're now in your body, and having a physical experience."The Fearless Women Podcastfearlesswomenpodcast@gmail.comThe Beacon AgencySponsors:BDCLockheed MartinExport Development Canada

We all feel fear,  but what do you do when it comes over you? For many the answer is to let it drive your actions and how you approach your life. But what if you could feel the fear, understand its place in your life, and still make strides towards your goals? You can!   There are two books that have been instrumental in how I talk about and think about fear. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert and The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What To Do Instead by Kristen Ulmer. In both, the authors share ways to approach fear without losing your drive or passion.    In Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert writes a letter to fear. She lets fear know that he can come along on the ride with creativity, but that he’s there as an observer only. He doesn’t get to talk, share an opinion, mess with the music, and most importantly, he’s not allowed to drive.    Isn’t it amazing to think about talking to your fears in this way? Acknowledge that they exist but then remind them who is boss and what their role is in your life?    I think that is so empowering and it’s helped me to rethink the role of fear in my life and my business. Listen as I share my insights about The Art of Fear as well and why I use both of these books with my own coaching clients. I’m also sharing my tips on approaching fear with a healthy respect and perspective.    “So many times in my own life, fear was the driver.” Dr. Errin Weisman   In this episode: [01:20] We are talking about fear today. #59 The Art of Fear with Kristen Ulmer (Expert Extreme Skier - Author - Speaker) EXPERT SESSION: voted as most extreme “fearless” woman athlete in North America, beating all danger-sports stars she was the best female big mountain extreme skier in the world, a status she kept for 12 years. Author of The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What to Do Instead. We dive into what the art of fear is and how athletes can utilize a new outlook on it... acknowledging, embrace and befriending fear. "Fear is not the problem in our lives, it’s our avoidance/resistance of fear that is the problem. If you become unwilling to feel or even acknowledge it, and put fear in the basement–a habit that is almost universally supported by society, that emotion will then start to sabotage your life in devastating ways that are either obvious, or covert. This habit has gotten so rampant, in fact, that today almost every problem we have is now tied in some way to our avoidance/resistance of fear. Taking fear out of the basement with caring and consideration, however, not only resolves these problems, but allows us a chance to access whole mind thinking, where anything can become possible." #shiftintofear #beyondathletic Full show notes @ https://beyondathletic.com/59

If there is one woman who has had an up-close-and-personal relationship with fear, it’s Kristen Ulmer. At 20, Kristen was skiing for the love of it and in jeans. By 23, she was on the US moguls ski team, starred in the first of 20 extreme skiing movies and was named the ski media as best woman big mountain extreme skier in the world (a ‘title’ she held for 12 years). This is a woman who came face to face with fear, in life-and-death situations, regularly and she developed a very intimate relationship with it. However it was only towards the end of her career, as injuries, illness and PTSD took their toll, she began to realise her relationship with fear wasn’t healthy and that it has caused or contributed to many of these problems. And so she began an in-depth study and obsession with fear. Fast forward to now and she’s the author of a book called 'The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What To Do Instead'. The premise behind it is that conquering, mastering, and trying to overcome fear doesn’t work and instead, we need to learn to embrace our fear and listen to it (rather than trying to ignore it or quieten it down). Mark and Michael speak with Kristen Ulmer. For more than a decade she was considered the best female extreme skier in the world who also survived her participation in paragliding, ice and rock climbing, kiteboarding, and adventure mountain biking—she rode across India in 1991. After retiring from — or at least dialing back her commitment to — extreme sport she spent 15 years studying Zen, teaching the mindset of optimal sports performance, flow states, embracing change, and emotional intelligence, often using skiing as the means. She is the author of “The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What to Do Instead” and still pushing at the edge of her own potential.

Shannon met former Kristen Ulmer at the Spartan Race in Lake Tahoe. Kristen is the author of The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What to Do Instead. In this episode she shares her journey with fear and discusses how we deal with fear. Kristen Ulmer started out as a professional athlete, she was the best female big mountain extreme skier in the world, a status she kept for 12 years. She risked her life on a pair of skis, jumping off cliffs and skiing “you fall you die” descents. Kristen was voted “Most Fearless Woman in America” by the outdoor industry beating women in all sports and disciplines, not just skiing.  While Kristen felt fearless, she realized after looking under her everyday reality that fear was with her in every single moment of every day and in every decision she made. She came to this realization after retiring her ski career in 2003 and studying with a Zen master for 15 years. Kristen started off as a mindset sports coach and currently is a fear specialist. Now Kristen’s whole world is talking about and thinking about fear. When Kristen retired, it wasn’t because her career was over; it was because she got to the point where she hated skiing. Every time winter would roll around she would cringe. Kristen started getting injured more and she had PTSD from seeing a lot of her friends die in the mountains and having many near death experiences herself. She was exhausted all the time and felt that there was something really wrong. So Kristen quit her ski career and set out to find out what was wrong. This is when she met the Zen master with whom she studied with for 15 years. Within the first ten minutes of working with her Zen master, Kristen discovered that she had been repressing her fear for years in order to ski the way that she wanted. Repressing your fear only works for about ten years then things begin to go south. Kristen started working with other athletes, and found they were underperforming due to their repressed fear. She also worked with people dealing with depression, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, and insomnia, discovering that repressing fear caused these problems too. Kristen realized that she needed to declare herself a fear specialist and write a book.  In a fear exercise, Kristen asked Shannon to talk to her like Kristen is Shannon’s fear. Kristen points out that fear is a huge part of our lives and with us everyday, in everything that we do, and how we treat our fear is ultimately how we treat our self. It’s important to have the best relationship with fear and it’s important how we talk to our fear. How do you talk to your fear? Do you tell it to go away? Do you tell it you hate it? Do you ignore it? If you hate your fear, how does that make fear feel? Darkness is not the opposite of light, it is just the absence of light. “Those who are unaware they are walking in darkness will never see the light.” –Bruce Lee If we see fear as a dark voice, then that is how it will appear. If we try to crush fear, push it away, conquer it, lock it away in the basement and throw away the key, then fear will come out in a very dark way. How would you feel if you were locked in the basement? Fear will not be denied. If you repress it, fear will come out as anger, sadness, or depression. It is a bad idea to repress fear, but it is something many of us do, and our fear comes out in a dark way. Fighting your fear creates a war in your subconscious. It is an exhausting war that you cannot win because fear is a part of life. Take Action: First, change your language surrounding fear. Instead of saying “Fear and anxiety is a problem in my life,” you should say, “Because I’m unwilling to deal with my fear and anxiety in an honest way that has become a problem in my life.” Second, have a fear practice: Identify where the discomfort is in your body. Recognize that it’s normal and natural to feel fear. Notice if you have any resistance to your fear. Can you lower your resistance? For 30 seconds feel your fear. Feel that discomfort without trying to get rid of it. “Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the ability to act in the presence of fear.” – Bruce Lee #AAHA (Awesome Asians and Hapas) Kristen nominated her friend Bill Tai who is her kiteboarding buddy. Bill Tai is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a fantastic kiteboarder. Tai is the Founding Chairman of Treasure Data, board director of BitFury and Voxer, seed investor in Canva, Color Genomics, Tweetdeck/Twitter, Wish.com, and Zoom Video, and Adjunct Professor of Innovation & Economic Development at Curtin University. He just started ACTAI, which is a group that brings together entrepreneurs, innovators, athletes, artists, tech heads, and thought leaders supporting causes around the world. Bill Tai, officially from the Bruce Lee Podcast, you’re awesome! #BruceLeeMoment  Kristen shares her #BruceLeeMoment: “Of course everyone knows who Bruce Lee is, I’m no exception. I am really drawn to his quotes, the second I hear a quote of his it just goes into my soul. I think of “Be water my friend. Water can flow.” Which your dad said. When I think of flow, I think of water, I think of myself as a hose. And I have these droplets of water coming into, through, and out of my life. These droplets of water are fear, anger, joy, love, a thought, a belief, they all come into, through, and out of my life just influencing me. I remember one time I was invited to compete in this very prestigious competition to see who the best female/male skier in the world was. And I didn’t want to do it, I just wanted to make movies. I felt obligated to go though because they were paying me to be there, but I felt even more obligated to win the thing, if I didn’t win this thing it would be humiliating. It was the best of two runs and after the first run I was not winning. I just rode the chairlift, I had two hours before my next run and I was feeling frustrated. That was a droplet of water. I was embarrassed, that was a droplet of water. I was afraid, of looking like a fool, I felt like a fraud. That I was pulling the wool over these guys’ eyes, maybe I’m not the best. I had all these really unpleasant, uncomfortable [feelings], fear of failure, coming into, through [me]. But because I was in flow with them because they were like water droplets, they were coming into my eyes and motivating me and helping me come alive and be more sharp. By the time two hours passed, and I got in the gate again, I went and skied this run that I jumped off a 70ft cliff. I took 4th overall for the men out of 120 men, and of course won for the women. It was this incredible moment where I was completely in flow with all these unpleasant experiences not resisting any of them and they all helped me be amazing for my second run." Team, when I was in Squaw Valley for the Spartan World Championships, I had the honor of meeting Kristen Ulmer who, for 12 consecutive years, was the world's top female big mountain extreme skiier. (My dream job!) From Wikipedia: Ulmer was on the US Ski Team for moguls in 1991. She also starred in over 20 ski movies, and was called by the ski media the best woman big mountain extreme skier in the world from 1990-2001. In 1997 Ulmer was also voted in a Powder Magazine ski industry survey to be the best overall female skier in the world, beating even Olympic gold medalists. She was known for jumping off up to 70-foot cliffs, throwing flips, and for ski mountaineering feats such as the first female ski decent of Wyoming's Grand Teton in 1997. An avid rock and ice climber, paraglider pilot, adventure cyclist, and kiteboarder, Ulmer was also voted by the outdoor industry in a 2000 Women's Sports and Fitness Magazine poll to be the most extreme woman athlete in North America, beating women in all sports disciplines not just skiing. She retired from professional athletics in 2003. Kristen has since written a book, The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won't Work and What To Do Instead.  So I could not pass up the opportunity to walk with her and ask her to share her story and big mountain wisdom with all of us. On a personal note, I'm really looking forward to staying friends with Kristen.  And I'm definitely looking forward to joining her on the slopes! Every Mogul Matters! Kristen Ulmer spent 15 years as a professional extreme skier, holding the title as the world's best female extreme skier for 12 of those years. Little did she know at the time she was “locking Fear in the basement.” Now, as the only known fear specialist in the world, Ulmer helps us learn how to “stop being afraid of being afraid.” To do that, she's launched a whole movement around how to have an honest relationship with Fear. Using “Shift” (her Art of Fear method), she personifies Fear, teaching us how to face and embrace this universal emotion. With a healthy dose of curiosity and some learned skills, we can access Fear and all our emotions without pushing them away. According to Ulmer, we tend to blame our problems on anger, stress, depression, and anxiety. Yet, from her experience both as an athlete and as a fear expert, she's come to see all these emotions rooted in Fear. Rather than repressing Fear, we should treat it as we would a child, giving it proper care and attention. Otherwise, we are almost sure to have physical breakdowns and emotional traumas. Left undealt with, Fear can rob all of us--even the best of athletes--of good health, excitement, energy, and an overall sense of joy. So, the answer lies in learning to meet Fear on neutral ground, not assigning it good or bad labels. Then, rather than exhausting ourselves trying to control the emotion, we must channel our efforts toward controlling our responses to Fear. In practical terms, Ulmer tells us Fear is a state of discomfort in our bodies. So, as we practice doing simple body scans, we'll learn where Fear tends to reside in our bodies. Then, when we find it, Ulmer tells us to turn towards Fear, giving it our full attention. In other words, we must give ourselves permission to feel Fear. In our society, rather than using Fear for fight or flight, we've learned to fight or flee the Fear itself. In a bold claim, Ulmer says treating symptoms such as PTSD, looping anxieties, insomnia, and depression only exacerbates the problems. Instead, she proposes using the following three-pronged approach: Get to know your patterns around Fear. Look for what Fear motivates you to do. Rather than resist it, learn to merge with your Fear. Recognize Fear is completely natural. “The more you allow Fear to speak, the less it will have to say, the less of a hold it will have on you. It's that simple.” Learn how to feel Fear. Deal with emotions emotionally. Ulmer proposes we “have a love affair with Fear.” Like falling in love, this highly emotional experience begins with showing commitment. This process will bring Fear into sharp focus, allowing it to heighten our awareness. Ulmer assures us, “The best way to feel alive is to go out and do something that scares you. What will follow is pleasure from learning and growing.” BUY The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won't Work and What to Do Instead Work with Kristen Music Credit
