For nearly a decade, Donald Trump and his political allies have made it clear that one of their primary goals is mass deportation of undocumented people living in the U.S. After the election, this rhetoric is set to become a policy reality, affecting millions of people across all sectors of society. While Trump and right-wing conservatives have proudly embraced an anti-immigration stance, it's important to recognize that Republicans aren't the only party that set the stage for mass deportations. Over the years, Democrats have also shifted rightward on immigration, increasingly echoing the foundational principles of conservative immigration policies. After all, there's a reason President Obama earned the nickname "Deporter-in-Chief": 3 million people were deported during his presidency. As questions arise about what mass deportations will look like under a Trump administration, many wonder how it will differ from the current system. In our latest episode, host Kai Wright speaks with Jasmine Garsd, NPR's immigration correspondent and the host of The Last Cup, as well as Ronnie James, director of national community engagement for the UndocuBlack Network, an organization that supports Black migrants who are either currently or formerly undocumented. They explore how both parties have mishandled immigration over the years, the myths and misconceptions that shape immigration policy, the economic impacts of mass deportations, and what these policies could actually look like in practice. James also shares how people can get involved in efforts to push back against these policies. Tell us what you think. We're @noteswithkai on Instagram and X (Twitter). Email us at notes@wnyc.org. Lionel Messi is considered one of soccer's greatest players, but has faced backlash in his home country of Argentina. We discuss his career, why World Cup glory has eluded him, and his relationship to his homeland with Jasmine Garsd, a correspondent with NPR and host of The Last Cup, a podcast about the player.
With the World Cup upon us, we want to introduce you to a new podcast from NPR and Futuro Studios: “The Last Cup,” a podcast series about soccer and the immigrant experience. Lionel Messi is known as the best soccer player of his generation, but there's one dream he's never achieved: winning a World Cup. Host Jasmine Garsd tells the story of Messi as a young immigrant who left Argentina on his way to soccer stardom. Now, he faces his last chance to win a World Cup - and the respect of his home country. Leaving your country, the search for success, and the dream of returning one day; Garsd sets out to explore these themes in her own life as an Argentine immigrant in the U.S. What does home mean when you are so far away, for so long?

This week we're bringing you something special from our friends at NPR and Futuro Media: the first episode of the podcast, The Last Cup. From his earliest goals on the soccer fields of his hometown in Argentina to his arrival at Spain's Barça Football Club, host Jasmine Garsd follows the journey of a gifted kid who would go on to become one of the best soccer players ever. In Argentina, where the national sport is a fierce obsession, Lionel Messi was the one that got away. As Garsd retraces Messi's early career, she examines the consequences of Argentina's devastating economic crisis of 2001, how it shaped Messi's path, and what it meant for her own life.
La Brega introduces The Last Cup, a limited series about soccer and the immigrant experience — from NPR and Futuro Studios. Lionel Messi is known as the best soccer player of his generation, but there's one dream he's never achieved: winning a World Cup for Argentina, the country he left decades ago. Reporter Jasmine Garsd asks, what does home mean when you are so far away, for so long? To listen to the full series in English or Spanish, follow along here or subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
With the disappointment of the 2010 World Cup behind them, Argentines are hopeful that Lionel Messi might break their losing streak at the 2011 Copa America, the largest tournament in South America. Messi is prepared to give his all, looking for a way to deliver a victory for his home country. Meanwhile, host Jasmine Garsd makes the long journey back to Argentina after many years away and faces an unexpected tragedy. The Last Cup is a dual language limited series from NPR and Futuro Studios. All episodes will be released in English and Spanish. Listen to the Spanish versions here.

They call him a 21st-century god of soccer. One of the all time greats. A king. But Lionel Messi's crown is still missing one big jewel: a World Cup trophy for his home country, Argentina. In this episode, host Brittany Luse explores Messi's long road to a World Cup victory with Jasmine Garsd, host of NPR's new podcast The Last Cup. Along the way, they go into how immigration, race and class coil around the world of international soccer. Then, Brittany goes on a gastronomic journey with food columnist Illyanna Maisonet, whose new cookbook Diasporican weaves in diasporic influences with Puerto Rico's Indigenous, African and European culinary traditions. Oscar and Emmy winning director TJ Martin discusses growing up with parents who were in a pioneering rock band in early ‘80s Seattle, making movies about beer pong, Tina Turner and a high school football team in Memphis, along with his process and goals of storytelling. If you want to prep for or follow up after listening with TJ's work, a good start would be “Last Cup”, “Undefeated”, “LA92” and “Tina”. This episode is meant for a mature audience, and there are discussions of assault and trauma. New day. New week. New month. It must mean a new podcast as I deliver ALL that's happening in the world of sports as Episode 176 is served. On deck: (3:59) Countdown to Super Bowl LV has begun, with a lead up into the big game. I'll explain Tampa's real shot to win based on only one theme. The Deshaun Watson standoff continues. Who is new Coach David Culley? Why not Eric Bieniemy? If I'm the Jets, why I WOULDN'T trade for Watson? The Matthew Stafford for Jared Goff deal. Wait! What? How many #1 picks is Stafford worth? The second retirement of Jason Witten. And what's next for Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh? (35:00) Both the NBA & NHL have a quandary when it comes to rescheduling postponed games on their schedule? What are the plans for both leagues to make up these games? I'll take a look around the Association, including Lakers-Celtics, Nets-Wizards and more. (45:24) Bringing you up to speed on the latest rankings in college basketball. Who's trending north? South? (46:59) I spend a minute on the NBA on discussions about a possible All Star Game in Atlanta come March. Really? (56:06) Some MLB Hot Stove cooking as I delve into the MLB discord with the players on pushing the season up a month, the universal DH for expanded playoffs. Free agent signings (JT Realmuto & Didi Gregorius), trades (Steven Matz to Toronto, which opens up a possibility of the Mets bringing in Trevor Bauer. Two words: BUYER BEWARE! Also, the Nolan Arenado trade to St. Louis. FOR WHO?) The departure of Masahiro Tanaka and retirement of Daniel Murphy. The Hall of Fame committee vs. Curt Schilling. And Scott Rolen a Hall of Famer? SERIOUSLY? (1:22:56) Plus, my Hero and Zero of the Week.
