Welcome to The Nick Taylor Horror Show! Today, we have a dynamic duo, Director Anthony DiBlasi, and his wife, actress Natalie Victoria, joining us.  After graduating from Emerson College and moving to Los Angeles, Anthony became a protégé of Clive Barker and worked alongside him on films like Midnight Meat Train and 2009's Book of Blood.  Anthony made his directorial debut with the psychological thriller Dread, based on a Clive Barker short story. One of Anthony's most acclaimed films was Last Shift, released by Magnolia Pictures in 2015. His filmography also includes the psychological thriller Extremity from 2018. Now let's talk about Anthony's Wife, Natalie Victoria. Beginning her career in theater, Natalie has earned awards and recognition for her acting and writing. Natalie has acted in various features, short films, and stage plays, including the comedy "Deadheads," and the cult classic horror film Last Shift.  Natalie stars in Anthony's latest release Malum, which is actually a remake of Last Shift.  The film follows a rookie police officer as she uncovers the eerie connection between her father's death and a vicious cult during her shift at a decommissioned police station. As the lone officer on duty, she finds herself in the midst of terrifying paranormal events while learning the shocking truth about her family's history with the cult. In our conversation today, we discuss the importance of building trust with actors, crafting horror based on personal fears, and Anthony's 10 years working with Clive Barker. Here for your listening pleasure are Natalie Victoria and Anthony DiBlasi. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Anthony DiBlasi.   Make Hell a safe space.  I've talked with people at length about how horror can be substantially more demanding on actors because it requires the most intense emotions. For this reason, horror directors need to take particularly great care of their actors. Anthony mentioned that it's essential for directors to shield their actors from on-set turmoil, especially time constraints. By ensuring your actors are cocooned from such pressures, even at the cost of other departments, you provide them with the environment necessary for a stellar performance.   Forge an emotional connection to your actors.  Anthony also stressed the significance of establishing genuine emotional connections with your actors.  It's the director's job to uncover the emotional truth that resonates with the actor for each scene. Rather than rudely prying them for emotionally intimate details of their life, Anthony stated that he would often reveal intimate and vulnerable details about himself and how he related to a scene to enable them to open up. Art often requires vulnerability; if you want your actors to go to dark places, you have to be willing to go there first.  Find out how your actors like to work. Further, Anthony and Natalie underlined the importance of understanding your actor's preferred way of working and direction style. Encourage them to share past directing experiences, both good and bad. Every actor is different, and tuning into their specific needs will mold you into a more versatile director.   Create a repository When it came to the creation of Malum, Anthony revealed how various elements - dreams, sketches, vague concepts - had been incorporated into the film.  Fortunately, his habit of consistently jotting down ideas, no matter how undeveloped, provided a wealth of material, or 'firewood' as David Lynch would say, all of which was at his disposal during the scriptwriting process. As a result, Anthony strongly encourages the use of note-taking apps (like Evernote and Notion), as they can be game changers. Amassing your thoughts over time can make facing that blank page far less daunting.   Thank you for listening! Don't forget to subscribe.  ----- Produced by Simpler Media

Remakes and reimagining's get a bad rap. Though there have been many lousy ones (people still puzzle over Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot “Psycho” remake) there's also many that are now classics.   John Carpenter's "The Thing", David Cronenberg's "The Fly", Philip Kaufman's "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", Gore Verbinski's "The Ring, William Malone's "House on Haunted Hill" and Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead". All inspired takes on classic films. What makes these examples work whereas others (here's looking at you Elm street remake) feel like tired retreads? It seems like it has a lot to do with a filmmaker who has a new lens to see the story through. Carpenter didn't just rely on the special effects (though they sure are special) for his take of “The Thing”, Cronenberg wasn't content to just rely on a cooler looking fly, Kaufman knew it would take more than bigger body snatcher crowds. You get where we're going with this. There's a connection between the filmmaker and the material for all these films that's evident in the movies themselves.  Our guest today can be added to the list of filmmakers whose reimagining works because there is a clear connection between the filmmaker and the world he's creating. PLOT TWIST… he's reimagining his own movie. In 2014, a film about a rookie cop's night at a soon-to-be-shuttered police station that becomes a descent into hell became a sleeper hit. The film was “Last Shift” and it has just been reimagined in the form of the new film “Malum” by its creator, our guest in this episode, writer/director Anthony DiBlasi. When I asked him about returning to the world he created with “Last Shift”, Anthony told me “I think the remakes that work are the ones that are really treated like reimaginings. They took the core of what was cool with the original and expanded on it. Almost as if it were a sequel to the original. What Aliens did for Alien. That's what we wanted to do with Malum. Explore what we couldn't in the first one because of resources, but also dive deeper into a mythology we barely touched on in the original. Build on the elements that work while also improving on the ones that didn't.” Anthony also delves into the years he worked closely with horror icon Clive Barker, how dealing with MPAA interference and studio meddling is basically trial by fire and adapting one of Barker's stories for his film “Dread”. Our talk with Anthony is a proper deep dive covering all his genre films so we will be dropping it in two parts. So remember, nothing is what it seems and the darkness is going to be staring right back at you while we explore the work of Anthony DiBlasi. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Working on a tiny budget didn't allow director Anthony DiBlasi and co-writer Scott Polley to do everything they wanted when making the 2014 film “Last Shift” but they never imagined that there would be a return to that same world less than 10 years later. A new production company called Welcome Villain launched with producer Luke LeBeau pitching the duo on the idea of revisiting “Last Shift” — this time with a bigger budget, which would allow them to tell a bigger story. DiBlasi debated if he wanted to make an extension of the first film or just reimagine the movie under slightly different circumstances while also keeping everything in the movie rather than some parts that were purposefully left on cutting room floor due to budget restraints. DiBlasi settled on the latter, especially with the chance to remake the film with audiences also finally being able to see his movie in theaters. The setup was nearly the same as the original except this time the rookie police officer babysitting a decommissioned police station actually chose her assignment because she desperately wants to know more about her family's history and the ties her father had to a demon worshipping cult that allegedly died alongside him one year earlier yet seems eerily still very much alive. In the second part of our two part series, Rewind of the Living Dead will stay out of holding and keep the laptop shut as we review the 2023 reimagining called “Malum”…Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell

MALUM sees director Anthony DiBlasi reimagining his 2014 film LAST SHIFT, where a rookie cop undergoes some supernatural hazing on her first night in a decommissioned police station. Almost a decade later, DiBlasi, with the backing of Welcome Villain Films, expands on the story, introducing more lore and gore to wonderfully deranged effect, sending this claustrophobic thriller into a surreal excursion through demonic realms. When Jessica Loren (Jessica Sula) volunteers to work her first shift at a decommissioned police station, infamously the place where her hero cop father Will (Eric Olson) gunned down his fellow officers, she reveals secrets regarding his last case: a rescue of teenage girls from a murderous cult. Let's just say the cult isn't too happy. Let's also just say that they know where Jessica works. This movie's a stellar one-location chiller. It's a haunted house featuring gnarly special effects, anchored by a lead who tries to remain poised despite the barrage of murderers and demonic shit flying her way. DiBlasi confidently moves his camera through the narrowest corridors, lighting our journey with, often, nothing but a flashlight and a prayer. The tension builds and the secrets unfurl at just the right pace to a fantastically fucked conclusion. This is 93/7% grade horror, lean and mean, but not without its cheeky winks to camera. I dig this. --------------------------- Closing Song: "Son the Father" - Fucked Up --------------------------- Review THE MOVIES on Apple Podcasts & I'll read it on the next episode! --------------------------- Follow Daniel on: Twitter - @TheMovies_Pod Instagram - @themoviespod Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/Daniel_Berrios/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

WWE look out! While the Podcast was attending the Cenobite Panel at Texas Frightmare Weekend 2018, actor Doug Bradley let the crowd know that he would be joining a wrestling promotion sometime in the near future. He didn't elaborate on it any further at the time, but we were all very curious to know where this was going. The wait is over as horror website Bloody Disgusting recently let it out of the bag that the Hellraiserstar has joined the wrestling promotion known as Blackcraft Wrestling. He's playing a role known as “The Preacher” who is the general manager of the promotion. According to a fan who attended the show Burning Bridges, Bradley was quoted as saying a familiar Hellraiser-esque line, but with a twist that only Doug could come up with: “We have such fights to show you!” I love it! I've attached some pictures that were taken at the event showing Bradley cutting promos in the ring: Also, don't forget to visit Blackcraft Wrestling's official site where you can watch a promo video they've made for the character. https://blackcraftwrestling.com/ Thanks to Bloody Disgusting and Blackcraft Wrestling Blog Post at: http://www.clivebarkercast.com/2018/08/29/doug-bradley-joins-wrestling-promotion/      Over the summer it was reported that a Nightbreed TV series would be coming to the small screen via the SyFy channel, but nothing else has been said on the subject since. Yesterday, Bloody Disgustingreported a tweet from the writer of the series Josh Stolberg that confirms the return of Decker.   "Good Ol' Buttonface. I'll be playing with him this Fall."   I'm not all that surprised that Decker is returning considering how the movie ended. I'd love to see director David Cronenberg return to play the character with Ashberry as his devoted disciple. We'll keep you posted as more news is made available. Thanks to Josh Stolberg and Bloody Disgusting. Original Blog Post: http://www.clivebarkercast.com/2018/08/30/dr-decker-will-return-for-nightbreed-tv-series-according-to-writer/   It's always a treat to see Doug Bradley in anything he does, from his Spinechillers, to the Wrong Turnmovies, the Book of Blood, short films, Star Wars games (Shadow of Revan) and now LORE. Earlier today he posted this on his official Facebook page: "I recently got to spend some time in Prague, filming an episode about Burke and Hare for the new season of Lore, coming October 19th." You can see Doug in the second season trailer in a scene from the Burke and Hare episode— where it looks to me by his appearance that he'll be playing Dr. Robert Knox— once again playing a wise and aged surgeon, a dignified profession shared with another character he played in a famous Horror franchise before, if I'm not mistaken. Lore started out as a podcast developed by Aaron Mahnke and now it's a show on Amazon Video. The second season will premiere on October 19, 2018 Original Blog Post http://www.clivebarkercast.com/2018/08/30/doug-bradley-will-star-in-episode-of-lore/   It's been over a year since Hellraiser box creator Simon Sayce's passing, but we've learned today that his work continues to live on in a new movie called Extremity. Sayce's contributions to the film are the masks that are worn by the film's villains. The film is also directed by Anthony Diblasi who adapted Clive Barker's Dread for the big screen. He had these positive words to say about Simon's work,“There are several ‘hero' masks in the film, which the villains wear,” says DiBlasi. “These things look amazing on camera.” Check this one out from the trailer: From the EW report: Extremity stars Dana Christina (Wynonna Earp) as a young woman named Allison who signs up for a trip to an extreme haunt called Perdition in the hope of exorcising her demons. Checkout the trailer below: https://ew.com/movies/2018/08/31/extremity-trailer/ Thanks to Ben Warren and EW. Original Blog Post http://www.clivebarkercast.com/2018/08/31/simon-sayce-news-2/

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Folks may not be aware of director/writer/editor Anthony DiBlasi but he's been fairly prolific in the horror genre these past six years. Having made his debut with a Clive Barker based movie, Dread, which was part of the After Dark 8 Films to Die For circuit run, he followed that up with Cassadaga, a serial killer film with a supernatural twist, and the 2013 horror film Missionary. Now his latest, Last Shift, after a successful run on the festival circuit, was released this year on VOD. Second generation cop, Jessica Loren, on her first day on the job, is to babysit the closing of the old precinct building waiting for the hazmat folks to take away the confiscated drugs and other chemical related evidence. Yet unbeknownst to her, this night will not be like any night she has ever experienced before. Her father had been killed during a shoot out with a murderous cult some time before and now the past may be coming back to haunt her. The film, besides being directed and co-written by DiBlasi, was also edited by him. With its one location shoot, the film's claustrophobic sense permeates the screen. Your co-hosts take a look at the film and give their opinions on the movie. DiBlasi may be an up-and-coming talent that may have already arrived without many folks knowing it yet.
