Jennie Monness is joining me this week to break down the difference between developmentally normal (and healthy!) anxiety and signs that your child may need additional support—and how you can adjust your parenting approach to effectively support both. Together we explore: Why our instinct to remove discomfort may actually make anxiety worse—and what to do instead. How to support children with separation anxiety, and the surprising stressors that often go unnoticed during transitions. Utilizing strategies to help your child feel more grounded, like routines, visual schedules, and previewing. The difference between information gathering and reassurance seeking behaviors in children - and how knowing this difference can impact which parenting tool you use to best support them. Dr. Sarah's simple “anxiety formula” that helps you know exactly where to focus your support. How to get to the root of your child's fear, when it isn't so obvious to decode and identify for parents. Play therapy techniques and somatic work you can use to explore the fears that are hard for your child to talk about or that they are avoiding outside of playful environments. Whether your child is anxious about school drop-off, starting something new, or just seems to struggle with big feelings, this conversation will help you feel more empowered to support them—without needing to rescue them from every hard emotion. We all know that children are the greatest blessings in life. They truly are. Raising them, however, can be quite a challenge for us parents. We want to protect them, mold them, and encourage them to be the best people they can be. But how do we do that without being too permissive or too authoritarian? Many parents struggle to find parenting methods that work for them and their children, especially when generations before us parented so differently. Maybe you're trying to break family cycles that you learned and want to do things differently with your kids. Maybe you want to parent with better boundaries and with more respect. If this is you and you're looking for ways to connect more with your children and parent with compassion, you're going to love today's guest, Janet Lansbury. Who is Janet Lansbury? Janet Lansbury is a former actress and model, and her passion for parent education began when she became a mother and sought guidance from infant expert Magda Gerber. Deeply inspired and grateful for her wisdom, Janet began training with Magda professionally. For the last 20 years, she has taught RIE parenting classes in Los Angeles and has served on the Board of Directors of Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) since 1995. Janet is privileged to support hundreds of thousands of parents across the globe, sharing insights gained through her parenting classes and personal experiences as a mother of three. In 2009, Janet created her parent education blog, JanetLansbury.com, and she later published two best-selling books, Elevating Child Care: A Guide to Respectful Parenting and No Bad Kids: Toddler Discipline Without Shame. In 2015, Janet launched her podcast, Unruffled, which is the top-ranking parenting podcast about respectful parenting from Wondery. Janet encourages parents and childcare professionals to perceive babies as unique, capable human beings with natural abilities to learn without being taught, develop motor and cognitive skills, communicate, face age-appropriate struggles, initiate and direct independent play for extended periods, and much more. My Thoughts Janet Lansbury is someone that I have admired in the baby and parenting industry for years. Her work has impacted me and so many others (including many of my clients) with our parenting and how we think about our children, boundaries, discipline, and more. Hearing her share her personal story and her overall thoughts on respectful parenting was inspiring. I have been interested for a while in learning more about RIE and the work that Janet does, but after this episode, I may just take a course myself. Stay tuned! If you would like a healthier relationship with your child and want to discover a different way of parenting that can blossom your own parenting skills, I highly recommend listening to this episode and learning more about Janet's work. I believe you will leave inspired, too. Then flew internationally and lived out of suitcases for the first 4 years of my kids life. Worked with a midwife in Santa Rosa. Was in a birth center- went into labor Monday eve. Used nitrous for pain. Transferred to a hospital Thursday night. Had a c- section Friday at 9:30 am. Hospital water heater broken. No shower. Janet Lansbury is a huge resource from my psychologist on how to transfer my psychological growth onto parenting. Kids are not giving us a hard time, rather they are having a hard time. I get complimented regularly on being a “good mom” which I attribute to my own emotional/ mindfulness/ empathetic self growth and work I was a sick kid with allergies and specialists. I applied all my gut health knowledge onto my kiddo. She is super healthy. No allergies. Well regulated. I was asked by her preschool to give a little all to the other parents on how to feed the kids so they could be more regulated ( easier for teachers) I'm now working on helping my daughters school with food and how to nourish the kids so they can focus and be regulated. I have a food and mood coaching program for parents and professionals. “Un- hijack your ( and your kids) brain from foods that make u”you feel off and dis-regulated) crave foods that make you feel on and regulated. When mistakes are judged, shamed and connected to child's worth + belonging (conditional teaching):✔️Kids learn to feel shame when they naturally struggle✔️Kids learn that conflict is binary: good/bad, right/wrong✔️Kids hold in their feelings + needs out of fear of shame✔️Kids are more likely to lie, blame, + defend to feel safeWhen mistakes neutrally explored and NOT connected to child's worth + belonging (unconditional teaching):✨Kids learn to feel safe when they struggle and grow✨Kids learn that conflict can be a safe place to learn✨Kids learn their + others' needs + feelings matter✨Kids are more likely to communicate, empathize + innovateGah! On the show this week Amy and Aly go into more of the common parenting decisions and what they have chosen to do so far. They talk about topics like posting kids on social media, following parenting philosophies, swearing in front of kids, screen time, and toddler leashes. Some topics are not just divisive between Amy and Aly, but also between them and their partners. Amy talks about her tendency towards RIE parenting and mentions following Janet Lansbury and Dr. Becky. Aly shares an interesting philosophy towards swearing in front of kids and how it actually plays out with a 2-year-old.

Review of the week: THE ONLY PODCAST I RELIGIOUSLY LISTEN TO This podcast saved my motherhood! I read all of Janet Lansbury's books prior to my first daughter and told myself I can do this…then when my second was born (daughter had just turned 3), I started to fall apart. I found this podcast…and [went] down the amazing rabbit hole of this podcast. They dive into incredible topics, things I am thinking of, they read and discuss books I've read or are in my to-read list…I just cannot say enough good things about this podcast and these women. I listen while doing laundry, walking, making dinner…wherever I can. The mamas are like having coffee with best friends–they keep SO REAL. And during the pandemic–bless you girls. This time is so challenging, sometimes I feel like I am barely getting by–but they make me laugh because they remind you that everyone is going through this thing called life and motherhood–even now. Crying is the single biggest reason why people are hesitant to work on improving sleep with their children. And I get it! Just because I'm a sleep consultant does not mean that I relish making children cry. BUT I do think that as a whole, our society has gone a little (or a LOT!) overboard on never letting children cry. In this newest episode I'll be sharing 4 main re-frames for how we think about crying. PLUS don't forget to join my FREE 3 Day Crying Challenge. Want to make a sleep change but scared of tears? Should we believe that using consequences, threats, shame, isolation etc. is the best way to teach + prepare kids for adulthood? NO! Today's Q&A explores how we can bravely work to believe that our kids grow best from our CONNECTION, not our CONTROL. Though our instinct tells us to fix, stop or punish their big feelings + challenging behaviors, practicing powers beyond control with our kids creates a sense of security for them that allows their brains to learn + our relationship to flourish. Can we do this everyday and every moment? We loved connecting with Rachel of the 3 in 30 podcast about supporting our older siblings when a new baby comes into the family! From Rachel's show notes:For all you mamas of one out there, what do you envision when you imagine adding a second baby to your family? And for all of your mamas of multiple out there, what do you remember about adding a second baby to your family? My guests on the podcast today are Hannah and Kelty, the twin sisters and founders of the parenting movement Upbringing. They said this to me and it resonated so deeply that I just had to write it down. Kelty said: “I thought [adding another baby] would mean more love, more snuggles, more squidgy little feet, more laughter, more connection. And it definitely did add all of that! But I didn't realize all the other more things that would happen. More crying, more anxiety, more stress, more messes, more juggling, and more divide and conquer existence with my partner…” Doesn't that sound about right?Adding a new baby to your family, whether it's your first baby or your fifth, always comes with a lot of emotions and change--all the highs and lows! And that is why today's guests Hannah and Kelty are so passionate about helping families to ease this transition and why they have created an online course called Right From the Start, which supports parents during the first year of a baby's life. Our Right From The Start baby video course and community is now OPEN for enrollment! The duties tied to being a mom are endless! We often feel like we don't have enough of ourselves to go around and that we aren't giving each child as much quality time as we desire. However, quality time doesn't have to be hours together, focused on each other.
