ABOUT LESLIE HARVEY Leslie Harvey is a family travel writer who publishes the blog Trips With Tykes. She co-hosts both the Disney Deciphered and Disneyland with Kids podcasts and is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Follow Leslie on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. TIPS FOR VISITING LAKE TAHOE Lake Tahoe covers a huge area between California and Nevada. If you were to drive all the way around the lake it would take a solid two hours. There are so many different towns and scenes around the lake. The Nevada side of the lake has more of your party scene with the casinos and big resorts. While the California side and part of the North side of the lake on the Nevada side are the more family-friendly areas. If you have never been to Lake Tahoe before the towns of Truckee, Kings Beach and Tahoe City are great spots to find reasonably-priced lodging. Especially if you are going with kids. The town of Kings Beach is located right along the water at the north end of the lake and is a great destination for a winter vacation. There are a lot of great vacation rentals and it is in a great location to be able to easily get to a lot of different ski resorts. Northstar Ski Resort is a great place to take kids skiing. The resort has a great ski school as well as tubing, an ice rink and even a daycare for non-skiing kids. Diamond Peak Ski Resort is also a great resort to take kids skiing. It’s not as well known but one big plus about this resort for families is that the kids ski free! Summer is the most popular time for vacationers to visit Lake Tahoe. If you want to go in the warm months, the lake will be warmest from late July to early August. Though the lake is most crowded in the summer months there are ways to avoid major crowded areas. If you are looking to really avoid crowds and maybe get better deals on lodging, the month of September will be your best bet. It will not be as crowded as the summer months but it is usually still decently warm and prices will go down being that it is out of peak season. Though the water is mostly too cold to really swim in, you can rent a boat and explore, go kayaking, fishing, take cruise tours, etc. Off the lake there are some great hiking areas and the ski resort trails actually turn into mountain biking trails if you are like to do that. Driving times can be a little tricky both in the summer with the crowds and the winter with the weather. You really need to be prepared to rearrange your plans in the winter if you are relying on driving places. Depending on the weather, roads do close quite often and it is not just smaller roads that will close but highways too. You will really want to keep that in mind when you are planning a winter vacation to Lake Tahoe. If you are planning to go this winter you really want to do your research for Covid restrictions. Make sure that things will work for you and you will be comfortable going. Some ski resorts you will require reservations. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Leslie recommends that if you have younger kids you should really think about buying gender neutral clothing, especially if you have boys and girls. Ski gear is so expensive and buying neutral colors will make it easier to pass them down to your younger kids or even to cousins. Getting the most out of the gear seeing as kids grow out of clothing so fast. MENTIONED ON THE PODCAST First Timer’s Guide to Lake Tahoe Northstar Ski Resort Diamond Peak Ski Resort The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe

ABOUT LESLIE HARVEY Leslie Harvey writes the family travel blog Trips With Tykesand also co-hosts the Disney planning podcast Disney Deciphered. Follow Leslie on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter. DISNEYLAND HOLIDAYS TIPS If you are planning on visiting Disneyland for the holidays, the best time seems to be in early December and during the week if you can. There seems to be a good lull in visitors at this time after the decorations are first put up and when holiday school breaks start. The Sip and Savor Pass is a great idea for families that plan to try several different food items. You recieve 8 tickets for different food items and you don’t have to use them all in one day. But try to plan what you use your tickets for to get the most value out of your tickets. Due to the weather, shows and fireworks can be cancelled so try not to plan your entire visit on these events since there is a possibility that they could get cancelled. Be sure to check crowd calendars when you plan your trip. If you do decide to go during peak season be sure to get there as soon as the park opens (or earlier) because they will close entry to the park if they reach a certain capacity. This can happen as early as mid-day in some seasons. The Disneyland app is a great help and you should make sure at least one of your party has it downloaded. The app will tell you when rides are closed, even if only temporarily. This can save you a long walk to a ride you would like to experience when the ride was closed down. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Leslie loves her Skechers GO walks and a pair of North Face Aphrodite pants. You can call it the City by the Bay, Fog City, SF, San Fran...just don't call it Frisco. This week we are chatting with Leslie Harvey from Trips with Tykes to get her best tips for exploring San Francisco with kids. ON THE PODCAST 032: Chatting with Tamara from Nashville 055: Nashville food tour 2:50 Nashville food scene 7:00 Grand Ole Opry 9:41 Union Station Hotel 12:01 Welcoming back Leslie Harvey 13:30 How long to spend in San Francisco 15:12 Must do sites in San Francisco 17:15 Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf 18:39 Getting to the city from the airport 20:03 Getting around the city 21:36 Walt Disney Family Museum 22:38 Best time of year to visit 23:25 Day trips from San Francisco 25:50 Distance to Disneyland 30:56 Best hotels for families 35:00 Best restaurants for families 38:38 Budget tips 41:29 Best place to take a family photo 43:55 Final tips 45:28 Leslie's favorite travel gear 47:55 Tip of the week ABOUT LESLIE HARVEY Leslie Harvey publishes Trips With Tykes, a family travel blog that focuses on the joys and challenges of travel with babies, toddlers, and young kids. Her travel passions include all things Disney as well as air travel, even in spite of her constant battles with the TSA over her toddler's juice box. Leslie is a former attorney and mother of two children, ages 8 and 3. She's originally from Alabama but now calls the San Francisco Bay Area home. Follow Leslie on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Google +. TIPS FOR EXPLORING SAN FRANCISCO WITH KIDS You need at least three days to visit San Francisco and you can easily spend up to a week. Must see sites in San Francisco include: Lombard Street, Alcatraz, Ferry Building, Pier 39, Alamo Square (with the Painted Ladies from Full House), Golden Gate Park, Walt Disney Family Museum, and Chinatown You must book tickets for the boat to Alcatraz in advance Pier 39 (where the sea lions are) / Fisherman's Wharf is very touristy so it is worth a visit but don't plan on spending all your time there The Aquarium by the Bay is a great way to learn about the local ecosystem If you drive, get an app to find parking but it would be best to leave the car at home and use public transportation To get from the airport, you can take a BART train to Union Square but if you are staying elsewhere, you may want to take an Uber or Lyft. It is about a 30-minute drive without too much traffic. Use public transportation in the city and if you want to get out of the city, you can rent a car for the day from an office in the system The cable car is used as a tourist attraction and not as much for reliable transportation Summer is the foggiest but September is the sunniest and warmest so fall is the best time to come. Winter is the rainy season. Best day trips from San Francisco include Sonoma or Napa, Muir Woods, Monterey, or the East Bay like Oakland Disneyland is a 5-6 hour drive from San Francisco Hotels are centered in Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. Union Square is more centrally located. You need to watch the convention schedule because when large conventions come into town hotels sell out and are extremely expensive (check the Moscone Convention Center schedule). The Westin St. Francis is expensive but you can find deals if you travel off peak. The Fairmont on top Nob Hill is also great with a fun tiki bar. If you use Airbnb, be careful about what neighborhood you choose. Check the San Francisco Chronicle's top 100 restaurant list for fine dining options. Good dining options for kids: Yank Sing dim sum Burritos in the Mission District Ethnic food Food trucks (Off the Grid has pop up locations) There are many free things to do in San Francisco Do the math on CityPass or GoCard to see if it will pay for itself Using the sharing economy (Uber, Lyft, etc) to save money Limit how many museums you do as they are expensive Be prepared that you may need to walk a lot of hills and plan your route accordingly BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Take a photo with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background from the scenic overlook across the bridge (if you head north to Sausalito) Another great spot to take a family photo would be at the Chinatown Gate, in Alamo Park, or at the corner of Haight & Ashbury FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Leslie wears a pair of black Mary Jane-style Crocs when she visits San Francisco. Just don't wear sneakers or you will look like a tourist. TIP OF THE WEEK The fog in San Francisco makes it feel much colder than you think it will be. Be sure to bring a raincoat but also something thicker and dress in layers. Her travel passions include all things Disney as well as air travel, even in spite of her constant battles with the TSA over her toddler's juice box. Leslie is a former attorney and mother of two children, ages 7 and 2. She's originally from Alabama but now calls the San Francisco Bay Area home. You can follow Leslie on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and Google+.   TOP DISNEYLAND TRAVEL TIPS Disneyland is much smaller than Disney World, making for a very different vacation experience and getting from park to park is much easier in Disneyland  There are two parks -- Disneyland Park and California Adventure Some rides are different -- such as Pirates of the Caribbean (Disneyland is better) and Splash Mountain (Disney World is better) Disneyland has the old Fast Pass system, not Fast Pass + currently at Disney World At Disneyland you can purchase them on the day of your visit at the machines at the park There are three hotels at Disneyland: Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier and Grand Californian, and none are true "value" resorts Paradise Pier will be the least expensive option but even in high season, the hotels usually top out at $400-500 per night The Grand Californian is the most upscale and has its own entrance into the park Leslie's favorite hotel is the original Disneyland Hotel because of its theming, history and Disney tours Kim really likes the Grand Californian but has also had a great stay at Paradise Pier Paradise Pier has the best character meal with the Surf's Up breakfast There are many options for staying off-site but are just across the street and easy to get to If you stay on-site, you get early entry, which is even more important at Disneyland than it is at Disney World because it gets so overcrowded There is a private entrance for hotel guests from the Grand Californian, but it can actually slow you down on very crowded weekends On holiday weekends you need to get there 30-40 minutes before rope drop Plan on spending three days in Disneyland The parks are always crowded but mid-September, early-December (between Thanksgiving and Christmas), January and February (outside of holiday weekends) are the best times to visit. However, some rides may be closed due to refurbishment during these times Leslie recommends the Blue Bayou for a special date night meal -- make a reservation in advance and request a table by the water To save money, book a budget hotel off-property and if you go on a whim, use Hotel Tonight to find good last-minute deals Leslie recommends buying tickets from Park Savers, who is a third-party reseller that offers discounts Buy Disney gift cards at a discount, such as buying them at Target with your RedCard and get 5% off and then use them at the parks Plan on leaving your hotel 45 minutes before opening to get through the bag check and past rope drops If you have young kids, use Rider Switch to get a pass that you can use anytime in the day and save them for when the rides are the longest or use them with your thrill rides multiple times BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO The classic spot would be in front of Sleeping Beauty's castle. Leslie also recommends going back to Critter Country near Splash Mountain for the meet and greet with Winnie-the-Pooh characters. She also likes the scenery in Carsland in California Adventure. Kim also recommends Mickey's House in Toontown. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Leslie really likes Skechers Go Walk sneakers and packs in layers as the weather is variable in Southern California. APP OF THE WEEK Kim recommends three options for Disneyland wait time apps: Mousewait with user generated content for wait times, Lines by Touring Plans which is helpful if you sign up for a touring plan, and the official Disneyland Park app with the most accurate wait times and information.
