Originally published in November of 2016, Zach Betonte and Simone Barros are joined by Supporting Characters host, Bill Ackerman to discuss John Lee Hancock’s psychological horror film, “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death” originally released in 1971. The trio consider the film’s distinctive rhythms, ambiguous structure and its possible interpretations and the performative range of Zohra Lampert as the titular character.
Christine Makepeace (The Feminine Critique Podcast) joins me to discuss her books and more recent horror movie inspired poetry. We also look at another two films from the list starting with the critically claimed, let alone truly random "Let's Scare Jessica To Death". Christine also helps to scratch another De Palma movie off the list, with his Hitchcock homage "Sisters". All this plus porn parodies, Christine shares her favourite "Twilight Zone" episodes and the joy of 90's horror plus much more!
As winter approaches, Mary, Scott and Dave settle in to the Deep Dark Lounge for the evening to watch and talk about the under-appreciated 1971 film, "Let's Scare Jessica to Death." They manage to break their cycle of giving every movie a three shot-glass rating, (Dave thinks it should have been 2 and 1/2) and at least ONE of them enjoys the cocktail pairing, which is appropriately named, the "Asylum".For your sipping pleasure, here is the "Asylum Cocktail": 1/2 oz grenadine 1 ounce Pernod 1 ounce gin "old-fashioned" glass Pour slowly, in this order -- grenadine, Pernod, gin -- into an Old-Fashioned glass. Add 2 or 3 ice cubes; serve with stirring rod. Best to let the ice melt a bit before stirring so you can watch the pretty pictures the Pernod makes as it clouds up.

Leave your insanity at the door, because this week we've got Chris Colohan, singer of many of the best hardcore bands of the last 20 years (CURSED, LEFT FOR DEAD, SECT, BURNING LOVE, and more) to discuss the 1971 cult classic LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH. One of my favorite movie nuances, especially in horror movies, is the soundtrack. A good score can elevate even the worst movie,(which I discovered just recently). This week, I'm queening out on some surprisingly effective and somewhat obscure soundtracks, and especially the early use of synths in movies like "Let's Scare Jessica to Death" and my newest slasher obsession. Movies Discussed: Don't Go to Sleep (1982) Hereditary (2018) Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) Final Exam (1981) The House on Sorority Row (1983) The Deadly Intruder (1985) He Knows You're Alone (1980) Halloween (2018) Tourist Trap (1979) Carrie (1976) Blood Rage (1987) Get in touch! The title "Let's Scare Jessica to Death" tells you almost nothing about the 1971 hippie vampire cult classic except that someone named Jessica is being frightened repeatedly. But all you really need to know is that the titular role is played by a captivating Zohra Lampert, who gives a gripping and wildly nuanced performance both as the mentally unstable Jessica and as, I assume, herself in a handful of zany Goya commercials from the 80's. The movie this time around is Let's Scare Jessica To Death which was Becca's choice. If you listened to the last episode you may know she actually picked The Begotten but as explained in this episode we will tell you why it was changed at the last minute. The gang talks about the spooky vibe of Let's Scare Jessica To Death and its origins of what it was meant to be in the beginning. Becca complains about the “mole” that is depicted in the film while John Morgan Neal complains about bandages. What is one of Richard's biggest fears? What were Richard's thoughts? What grade did he give it? Find out this and more on this episode of The Assignment: Horror Podcast.
John Hancock is known for many films that could not be more different from each other. His first feature, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, is a cult horror classic. Bang the Drum Slowly, a baseball sports drama, featured a young Robert DeNiro as a catcher with a terminal illness. And the holiday classic Prancer is well, ya know, a holiday classic. Hancock has also directed numerous plays, television shows, commercials and many other notable films, most recently the independent drama The Looking Glass which was filmed in Northern Indiana. Paul Nelson talks with John about his childhood days romping through the fruit farm his family owned near LaPorte as well as his long career in film and television. We learn a little about independent filmmaking and some of his personal preferences when tackling a media project. This is a must listen episode for anyone with a passion for filmmaking and storytelling as well as those who want to know more about Indiana's notable alumni.

On this week's episode of The Scream Squad, we close our January with a bite, diving into three films that explore characters who believe they are vampires. First up, Nicolas Cage's whacked out performance in Vampire's Kiss dives into mental illness, yuppie culture and male entitlement. Then, George Romero's personal favorite, Martin, explores isolation and the decline of American Industry with a strange boy who believe he is a vampire in a dying Pittsburgh. Finally, a cult classic, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, which takes a look at vampires and mental illness from a female perspective. Plus, if given the chance, would Jamie and Chico become immortal? Movie Meltdown - Episode 338 This week we talk comedy, road trips and lots and lots of horror with comedian Derek Sheen. And while we figure out just where he took a left turn into a time hole, we also discuss... black and white monster movies, Phantasm, immediate descent into madness, Zacherle, Shock Waves, bag pipes, Scott Mosier, what is the marketability of this movie, Tom Savini, a car is essentially a bathroom without a toilet, Slumber Party Massacre, I just feel like there's something in the film that's going to manifest itself in the room, Zelda Rubinstein, the world was yours, John Carpenter, Maniac, Tales From The Crypt, Don't Look Now, White of the Eye, I've always wanted to be on-stage, you found a bunch of reels of 8mm can and this is what happened, Sleepaway Camp, the biggest horror now is trust, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, From Beyond, self-aware horror, Chris Hardwick, Friday the 13th, The Devil's Rain, I shouldn't be playing this in my house... something malevolent is in the film - and I don't like it, Demons, having faith in the filmmaker, When a Stranger Calls, Asylum, Mondo Cane, having perfect pitch, understanding isolation, Black Christmas, The Witch, Matthew Fox, Powerball winners, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, he's a giant baby man, people are trying too hard to create content, The Accused, you're given the gift of doubt, Basket Case, it's all about the eyes, horror and suspense are very different, Leatherface on his downtime, what scares people is the unknown, Bone Tomahawk, this sad gorgeous cadenza, it's like a long-form Ramones video, Beyond the Door, crippling stage fright, there was no other distraction... other then the darkness, if you walk into it as a horror movie - it's going to break your brain, Martha Splatterhead, The Sentinel, compartmentalization, Forensic Files, what scares people is what's beyond the veil, Kill List, horror is dread, full of self-loathing, well I have to go to bed now, making chili out of people, an STD metaphor, the Serbian porn industry, it was just more claustrophobic to be watching movies like that knowing that the entire world was asleep, reconciling grief, Brewster's Millions, they confuse murder with horror, Anthony Jeselnik, you can't have a zombie apocalypse, at least I'm not filled with demons, B.o.B's theory, there isn't any alone time, weirdly titillated, birthing torsos, whistling past the graveyard, the closet door slowly opening, when you leave the theater it makes you look at every single person on the street, the Eyes Wide Shut syndrome, filled with asbestos, blood and gravity, when you remove reason completely... that's where horror comes in. Spoiler Alert: Some end of the movie spoilers for Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, Session 9... oh and Derek completely destroys the myth of a zombie apocalypse. You have been warned! "Give me something that permeates the very fabric of my belief system." For more of Derek's comedy, records and tour dates, go to: http://derektime.com/
This week we discuss a cavalcade of horror as we discuss THREE movies!
We're looking at the 1971 film Let's Scare Jessica to Death. Directed by John D Hancock and based on a screenplay by Lee Kalcheim, the film tells the tale of Jessica (Zohra Lampert) a woman who's back from an asylum and spending some quiet time in the country.
