Oh my gosh I love this movie! A typical monster movie posing as a live story. It reminds me of that midern film where the guy meets the hot brunette and it turns out she's like an octopus under a curse. Makes me miss my ex wife. She was hot like that but also a monster sometimes. This lady is a mermaid. In part two I'll get more into that. Welcome to Episode 9 in our "Speaking with the Dead" series, an episode bathed in the eerie glow of All Hallows' Eve and seeped in the nectar of otherworldly wisdom.Materializing before us today is Marjorie Cameron (April 23, 1922 – July 24, 1995), also as known as the Scarlet Woman of Thelema. She is the enigmatic sorceress of the silver screen, the muse and mystical partner to Jack Parsons in the infamous Babylon Working, and a self-proclaimed Thelemic witch. As we light the proverbial jack-o'-lanterns to guide us, Cameron unravels the essence of her sensual, disturbing, and undeniably taboo-breaking artistic creations. She takes us on a bewitching journey through her psychedelic vision quests, her roles in "Wormwood Star", "Night Tide" (in which she acted alongside Dennis Hopper), and "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome", in which she played herself - the Scarlet Woman, an earthly echo of the ethereal Babalon. So, dear witches, warlocks, and wanderers of the arcane, incline your seats to a comfortable position, and fasten your witchy seatbelts for this rocket-feuled Halloween special. Allow the mysteries of this liminal night to unfold as Marjorie Cameron leads us through the twilight spaces between sacred and profane, in another mesmerizing episode of "The Wildwood Witch" podcast.Resources:"Wormwood Star the Magickal Life of Marjorie Cameron" by Spencer Kansa.Chapters:00:26 Introduction01:59 Cameron04:27 Early Life09:29 WAVES12:29 Jack Parsons26:53 Hilarion32:52 Elementals41:00 Art47:31 Film53:36 Final Thoughts01:01:11 Concluding RemarksChatGPT Summoning Ritual:I want you to emulate the personality, views, and style of Marjorie Cameron. ABOUT HONEY GENTRY:Honey Gentry is a singer, songwriter and producer based in London, UK. Inspired by mythology, cinema, and self-help books in equal measure, the former screenwriting student prides herself on her worldbuilding.Born and raised in London, Honey Gentry had music fans for parents. “Music soundtracked everything – Friday night car journeys to Dad's, or weekday mornings getting ready to club classics and disco hits on mum's radio,” she reflects. Her dad's music taste informed her music education as much as her mum's love for pop: “Dad was introducing us to Kate Bush and No Doubt, later Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.” Her own taste was developing – she was a teenage fan of My Chemical Romance and Nine Inch Nails as much as Marina and the Diamonds or Lady Gaga. She mellowed as she approached her late teens – “I saw The Pierces on the Jools Holland show and their sound enchanted me; I went on to see them live in London a few times after that,” she says of the folk-pop duo, who inspired her to dive deeper into the worlds of Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Joan Baez and Janis Ian. Later, Lana Del Rey would place the final piece in the puzzle, inspiring Honey to perform as well as write. “What Lana gave me that most other artists hadn't before that: extraverted aspirations for such an introverted singer. It was OK for an artist like me to aspire to be known – it didn't mean I had to change who I was.”After school, she started her writing journey pursuing screenwriting, enrolling in film school at the age of 19. “It was during those years that, although I enjoyed what I was doing with film, I realised I couldn't leave music behind,” she reflects. Upon graduating, she turned her attention almost immediately to music, painstakingly teaching herself how to produce and record at home, recording at night whilst working full time in admin jobs to pay the bills and fund her music. Those early recordings and demos led her to meet Ruben Elbrond-Palmer, who would co-write and produce Moonlight EP (2018) and Dreamlover EP (2019): “once we started work on the early Honey Gentry demos, I knew I had found the sound I wanted to pursue. He just immediately understood what I was trying to achieve and made my early sound what it was.”After Moonlight and Dreamlover, Honey Gentry took over as sole writer and producer for her debut, HG (2020): “It started entirely as a practical thing – we were in the early stages lockdown and I didn't want to pause on the work I'd been doing on writing my next body of work.” By August 2020, the period of isolation had led Honey to emerge blinking into the late summer with her first album: HG, which was released digitally on 22 September 2020, and followed by a crowdfunded vinyl pressing. The follow-up to HG saw Honey take a deeper dive into production and sampling – the title track opens with a quote from the film, Night Tide (1961) which seems to perfectly reintroduce the artist: But I'd like you to know me better… I'm not afraid of that. The album glimmers with synths and electric pianos, soundtracking reflections on mortality (Summer Air), power struggles (Let You Win), desire to escape (Take Me Somewhere) and domesticity (Peaches).Different Water, the latest offering from Honey Gentry, is out now. Diving deeper into her sound as a producer, she also uses the three track EP to reflect on interstellar space, childhood, ageing, and straying from your own self for the people you love. Under Taurus, the lead single from the EP, is named after the Louise Glück poem of the same name. “With Under Taurus, I really wanted to use the imagery from her poem – someone pointing out something in the night sky that we just can't see with our own eyes – to explore what it means to change too much for others – saying we want or see something...

Former TCM Underground chief programmer Millie De Chirico joins us to talk about her book, "TCM Underground: 50 Must-See Films from the World of Classic Cult and Late-Night Cinema." She also helps us get through our TCM Underground withdrawals that we've all been going through since Turner Classic Movies cancelled the Friday night cult movie cavalcade in February. First, Millie and the OMFYS crew discuss a trio of way underground short films from Curtis Harrington and Kenneth Anger (RIP): THE WORMWOOD STAR (1956), INAUGURATION OF THE PLEASURE DOME (1956), and INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER (1969). Millie and Cory shed a lot of light on the occult art scene of 1950s Los Angeles, and one of its central figures, the bewitching (maybe literally!) Marjorie Cameron, and Philena's "TikTok Report" shows us that people are still very afraid of these movies, which is a good thing. Curtis Harrington, who directed WORMWOOD STAR and stars in PLEASURE DOME, sticks around for our feature, his haunting zero-budget horror film, NIGHT TIDE (1961). Dennis Hopper plays a sailor drawn to a sideshow mermaid (Lindy Lawson) who might just be the real thing. Marjorie Cameron also appears as The Water Witch plus bongos by Chaino. There is a big SPOILER WARNING! on this one because we DESTROY THE ENDING. We usually edit this stuff out but the spoilery bits may help people understand NIGHT TIDE and the conversation is just too fun to end up on the virtual editing room floor. At least Bob thinks so, and he's usually the spoiler police. If you haven't seen NIGHT SIDE stop listening at the 1:13 mark of this episode and skip ahead to the weed recs four minutes later (1:17). Both of our featured filmmakers, Kenneth Anger and Curtis Harrington, are LGBTQ+, so please consider this our ACCIDENTAL PRIDE EPISODE. Love is love. The PhilenApocalypse as foretold by prophecy is finally upon us! Philena Franklin has taken over OLD MOVIES FOR YOUNG STONERS and has transformed it in NEW MOVIES FOR OLD STONERS! Both movies are in color and both have synchronized sound! No silents! No subtitles! One of these movies is even from THIS CENTURY!!! Can OMFYS survive this brush with modernity??? Listen and find out! First, Philena shows us what it was like to grow up in the Franklin household with MIDNIGHT MADNESS (1980), a movie she claims her dad, OMFYS co-host Greg Franklin, made her watch repeatedly during her formative years. David Naughton (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON), Eddie Deezen (GREASE), Maggie Roswell (THE SIMPSONS), and Stephen Furst (ANIMAL HOUSE) star in this wacky scavenger hunt comedy produced by Disney (although you wouldn't know it from the opening credits). The Mouse kept their name off of this one. It's also Michael J. Fox's first film, which probably helped the studio recoup their losses from it on the home video market once Family Ties hit. Then, Philena takes us to 2013--just 10 years ago!--for WARM BODIES, a zombified retelling of Romeo and Juliet with Nicholas Hoult from RENFIELD as a rotting zombie searching who finds true love, and John Malkovich in the Lord Capulet role. I'd wanna say it's the first movie featured on OMFYS with CGI effects, but there might've been some video toaster action going on in LOST HIGHWAY (1997) from our "In Cold Bud" episode. We also talk about the WGA strike and what musical artists are torturing the poor, starving writers on the picket line. Hope you enjoy all the newness but we promise to get back to black and white with our next episode where we will be joined by longtime TCM Underground programmer Millie De Chirico for Curtis Harrington's NIGHT TIDE (1961) with Dennis Hopper + Kenneth Anger's (RIP) occult short, INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER (1969). Welcome listeners to the 21st episode of Anechoic Chamber, once again bringing you unique reportage from the thriving margins of art and culture. Our guest this time is the British sound artist Scanner, known by his human alias Robin Rimbaud. With a staggering number of live actions and recordings to his credit, Scanner's oft-cited and controversial claim to fame has been his usage of intercepted communications and conversations as the raw material with which to build music dramas with an intense poignancy and personal relevance. This practice is, however, just one point of reference in a large body of work that deals with what the artist has called a “archaeology of loss” documenting the ghosts and all-too-quickly forgotten ephemera of the information age. Scanner's enthusiasm for such led to the co-formation of the notable record label Ash International, one of the key labels to fuse esoteric or paranormal interests with aesthetic impression from the hard sciences. His own work has been applied to all kinds of installation environments and contexts, and to collaborations with artists from DJ Spooky to Mike Kelley, and has even earned the endorsement of the late Gilles Deleuze. He has created permanent installations in everything from Riga airport to a Paris morgue, has scored the first virtual reality ballet for the Dutch National Ballet, and also scored a piece in Trafalgar Square for 1,000 dancers. With a restlessness that has extended to his private practice of writing a daily diary entry since he was 12 years old, we at Anechoic Chamber are fortunate to steal some rare moments of his free time. all selections provided by Sacnner, from the following releases (mostly) available to stream / download at https://scanner.bandcamp.com/: - "Sound for Spaces" - "Play Along" - "Mass Observation (Expanded)" - "Esprits de Paris (with Mike Kelley)" - "Electronic Garden" - "Reason by Heart, Sleep by Twilight" - also featured Scanner remix of Scorn "Night Tide," from "Ellipsis" remix album additional artist links: www.scannerdot.com Anechoic Chamber Links: host website | www.thomasbeywilliambailey.net donate via Paypal: tbwb@protonmail.com

Swartz, in their book, The A to Z of Old Time Radio, noted that the program differed from most others in its genre: "It was a more hard-boiled program than many of the other private detective shows of the time, containing few quips or quaint characters." The program first aired 17 June 1947 on NBC radio under the title The New Adventures of Philip Marlowe, with Van Heflin playing Marlowe. The show was a summer replacement for Bob Hope. The first episode adapted Chandler's short story "Red Wind". The NBC series ended 9 September 1947. In 1948, the series moved to CBS, where it was called The Adventure of Philip Marlowe, with Gerald Mohr playing Marlowe. This series also began with an adaptation of "Red Wind", using a script different from the NBC adaptation. By 1949, it had the largest audience in radio. The CBS version ran for 114 episodes. That series ran 26 September 1948 – 29 September 1950. We focus on noted genre filmmaker, Curtis Harrington on the podcast this time. We start off with his first feature, 1961's Night Tide, starring a very young Dennis Hopper as a young sailor that falls in love with a mysterious woman who seems to leave a trail of bodies in her wake. We follow that up with 1973's The Killing Kind which features a bravura performance by John Savage as Terry, the son of legendary actress Ann Southern. Terry is finally out of prison for a horrific crime, and is finding his head full of thoughts of revenge. These are very different films, but both are compelling and worth searching out. The Killing Kind, in particular, was truly a revelation, but is packed with problematic moments and a list of trigger-warnings as long a mermaid's tail.Send us your thoughts on the show and recommendations for future episodes to flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com.
