This week features two films centered on a group of hikers encountering a backwoods killer in the mountains executed to quite different results. DON'T GO IN THE WOODS (1981) is one of the infamous video nasties banned in the UK during the 1980s. Did it deserve it? We then focus on a slasher film that has gained its reputation over time, JUST BEFORE DAWN (1981) directed by Jeff Lieberman.

It's No More Room In Hell #44On this episode Mr. Venom, Mike, & Derek are packing up the van and headed to the woods to cover a couple of movies that released in the wake of Deliverance; RITUALS (1977) & JUST BEFORE DAWN (1981). Derek finally watched X, Mike watched mostly non-horror stuff, & Venom watched some lackluster titles. It's merits as a horror movie are substantial, whether it's the first-rate cast, composer Brad Fidel's spooky and sparse score, or the expertly utilized and gorgeously photographed outdoor locations.

Do you hear that whistle in the wind? It could be the harbinger of your doom! Episode 183 of Dead Air brings us the 1981 slasher Just Before Dawn! Warren and Constance head up to a rural land in deep Oregon because Warren has just been handed a deed to a plot of land. They take their friends up to the remote forest area for a weekend "Outing" of drinking full bottles of wine and listening to Blondie. Once there and night falls, it becomes obvious that they aren't alone. An old farmhouse less than a mile from them is home to a humble family that doesn't take kindly to strangers. Moreover, they warn that the very presence of Warren and his friends will "raise the devil" Is this simply hyperbole? Or is there a true demon stalking these woods? Warren and Constance will soon find out!

An analysis of Just Before Dawn, a horror movie from 1981.

We're talking about this throwback band this episode. We're also talking about a classic Hillbilly Horror / Slasher movie called Just Before Dawn [...]

This episode, Mike and Marty took the podcast out into the woods, for a fun camping trip and then things started to go horribly wrong.  We look at two films which follow in the footsteps of many previous films but perhaps most obviously, John Boorman's 1972 classic Deliverance.  The first we look at is Rituals from 1977.  Starring Hal Holbrook and a small group of very talented actors, and featuring a really top notch script, this was a truly delightful surprise.  It is a grueling experience as the viewer follows a group of doctors who are on an expedition to "The Cauldron" and run into something in the woods that clearly wants them to leave.  We follow that up with 1981's Just Before Dawn, directed by Jeff Lieberman who gave us the only "killer earthworm" film we've ever seen, Squirm.  Chris Lemmon and Gregg Henry are the leaders of a group of young people who intend to explore a remote forest area, despite the ominous warnings of both the creepy locals and the resident park ranger, played by the wonderful George Kennedy.
