This week features two films centered on a group of hikers encountering a backwoods killer in the mountains executed to quite different results. DON'T GO IN THE WOODS (1981) is one of the infamous video nasties banned in the UK during the 1980s. Did it deserve it? We then focus on a slasher film that has gained its reputation over time, JUST BEFORE DAWN (1981) directed by Jeff Lieberman.

On this episode of the podcast Phillip is joined by author Jennifer Upton and A.C. Nicholas to discuss Mario Bava's Black Sabbath (Both the Italian version and the AIP version.). A.C. and Jennifer start the show by reading some facts about the movie. Then Phillip reads the general information about Black Sabbath. Warren and Constance head up to a rural land in deep Oregon because Warren has just been handed a deed to a plot of land. They take their friends up to the remote forest area for a weekend "Outing" of drinking full bottles of wine and listening to Blondie. Once there and night falls, it becomes obvious that they aren't alone. An old farmhouse less than a mile from them is home to a humble family that doesn't take kindly to strangers. Moreover, they warn that the very presence of Warren and his friends will "raise the devil" Is this simply hyperbole? Or is there a true demon stalking these woods? Warren and Constance will soon find out!

Sometimes when you make a funny podcast about schlocky movies, you run across a movie that is...kinda perfect? Maybe the most underrated slasher ever? If you've wanted to hear a whole new style of riffing and song-construction, pointing death and black metal toward a glorious New Dark Age, this is it. It's one of the most important records to come out this year, and issues the same challenge issued by Serpent Column -- to make metal that parts the swirling wind and fog, bringing forth a higher, more abundant mode of life. And with that out of the way, we're onto Finland: Sammas' Equinox took four years refining their eccentric, esoteric-pagan black metal before releasing a full-length, and The Black Metal Guy is stoked to see how it turned out. We talk over the record's formidable high points, and meditate on the balance between wizard and warrior aesthetics. The second half of the show sees The Death Metal Guy at full Death Metal Guy. He leads off with Insalubrity's foul breed of brutal death, full of pinch harmonics and slippery trem. The Black Metal Guy has been learning to listen to this sort of thing -- but will this one be a bridge too far?? To close out, TDMG brings a sick new find we can all agree on: sombre Swedish death metal about tanks. Often when an artist who isn't a conventional DJ curates a mix, the result is a refreshing selection that doesn’t attempt to make the listener move or engage, but simply sit back and listen. Especially so, in the case of Goa-based singer-songwriter Aditi Veena aka Ditty, who exhibits intimacy and ingenuousness as fundamental features in her music. Consequently, her mix for Wild City comes as an invitation to dig into her personal influences and pleasures. The mix kicks off with ‘Picture a Vacuum’, the opening track to Kate Tempest’s Mercury Prize-nominated ‘Let Them Eat Chaos’. The spoken word piece harkens to Ditty’s own album opener ‘Food City’ from her recently released ‘Poetry Ceylon’. Paying little attention to the process of mixing itself, Ditty instead focuses on building a dynamic listening experience through her selections – catching us off-guard as she follows up her 2017 mellow lo-fi work on ‘Maybe’ (ft. Jayant Manchanda aka Deadcat) with the hard rap of Saul William’s ‘Horn Of The Click-Bike’. Further in the mix, Ditty provides a cinematic narrative of emotions with the hopeful melancholia of Sonnymoon’s ‘Just Before Dawn’ preceding the victorious indie electronica of Broadcast’s ‘Tender Buttons’.
