Kate's an old pal from our days at Word magazine. She was on the staff for six years before heading off to the New Statesman and has just put out a collection of the sizzling and revelatory profiles she wrote for us, them and the Observer about a particular sector of the musical landscape for whom she's always carried a torch. As she wonders in ‘Men Of A Certain Age: My Encounters with Rock Royalty', “how is it that in the presence of wrinkly rock stars twice my age I sometimes think I'm meeting … me?” This tremendous exchange is full of hard-won insight about the mind-set of musicians and stops off at the following … … the fascinating appeal of rock stars' vulnerability, giant egos, oddness and obsessions – “they're often frozen at the emotional age they became famous”. … growing up with Britpop, the decade when “teenagers weren't allowed to like anything”. … things women notice and men often miss: the difference between male and female journalists. … being driven down a mountain by Kevin Ayers after he'd drunk a pint of Pernod. … why she's so drawn to the critically unfashionable acts like Bruce Hornsby, Kiss and Terence Trent D'Arby. … what she learnt from interviewing Joni Mitchell's old boyfriend Cary Raditz. … why the best route to understanding any rock star is via their parents. … her obsession with “the shamefully unfashionable” Queen, aged 11, and the appeal of these self-styled “fun ambassadors” against the grating irony of the ‘90s. … the “charming yet awful” Paul O'Neill of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra handing out $50,000 bundles of cash to the homeless. … why musicians are more interesting when they've peaked. … “the cartoon characters” of Shaun Ryder and John Lydon. … “the only people at Jeff Beck's interment were his wife and Johnny Depp”. … and being refused an interview by Janelle Monae for not being sufficiently “queer or black”. Kaveh Zamanian is a cool customer. The founder of Rabbit Hole Distillery, Kaveh's relaxed personality is immediately apparent. That's not to say that he hasn't felt the anxiety and strain of building a brand. As he tells it, Kaveh had spent many nights on his knees “praying to whoever would listen” that his vision for Rabbit Hole would come to fruition. A former clinical psychologist, Kaveh launched Rabbit Hole in 2012. The distillery's name is derived from Kaveh's “passionate descent into the practice of distilling fine spirits,” specifically rye and bourbon. The whiskey is produced in small batches at Rabbit Hole's state-of-the-art 55,000-square-foot distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, and presented in four core expressions along with the brand's innovative Founder's Collection series. In 2019, French spirits giant Pernod Ricard acquired a majority stake in Rabbit Hole for an undisclosed price. The deal accelerated the brand's U.S. distribution and helped it expand internationally. Kaveh has continued to helm Rabbit Hole and added a new title – Chief Whiskey Officer at Pernod – in the process. In this episode, Kaveh talks about how his passion for whiskey became an entrepreneurial journey, how he assembled a team of industry veterans early into the development of the company and why he credits a strong support network as key to his career transition. He also talks about pitching 1,000 investors over the course of two years and how he got 110 to say “yes,” and his current work developing new products and brands, including Mary Dowling Bourbon and Mash & Mallow Whiskey. Show notes: 0:35: Kaveh Zamanian, Founder, Rabbit Hole Distillery – Kaveh speaks with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif about the Nulu neighborhood of Louisville, where Rabbit Hole is based, the construction and capacity of of its distillery and how his love of wine impacted his foray into whiskey. Kaveh also talks about the bourbon industry's renaissance over the past decade and how distilling talent, if not funding, was plentiful; why he felt it was important to maintain his job in psychology early into the development of Rabbit Hole; and why he credits a strong support network as key to his career transition. He also explains why building a facility that matched his ambition was critical to his vision for Rabbit Hole, how the company forecasted demand and its capacity for contracting distilling and how he convinced investors with no experience in the spirits industry to back the company. Kaveh also talks about managing anxiety, the key elements of Rabbit Hole's brand architecture, how he considered an exit strategy while building the company and which decisions he regrets most over the past decade. Brands in this episode: Rabbit Hole Distillery, Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey, Nantucket Nectars, Culture Pop, Bardstown Bourbon

Confidence, they say, is a preference for the habitual voyeur of what is known as……1994, darlings! And of course, as perceived wisdom now dutifully dictates, we were all completely mad for it, lemon hooch in hand, union jacks draped around our football tops, waving two fingers to those damn yanks. Go home!Except, of course, the truth couldn't be further away from the, er truth. Whilst it definitely maybe was 1994, there was so much more than just cigarettes (and alcohol). And we were all the better for it, pop kids! Our favourite compilation series was not only celebrating nearly turning 30, it was also sporting a new slimline 2CD cover - swanky, and soooo nineties! Goodbye fat boxes, this decade of NOW was neater, fitter and certainly in full swing. So, what could you expect from this sparkly, starshaped selection of 38 Top Chart Hits?Pure, glistening pop from the likes of Michelle Gayle and Sophie B Hawkins!Boyband phoar-dom (is this a word?) from the top flight teams of FC Take That and East 17 United!Swoonsome songstress Lia Loeb positively not missing the knocks of Ethan Hawke (reality will bite)! And huge slices of europop at every provincial nightclub turn! Another Saturday (rhythm of the) Night folks! Mine's a Pernod and blackcurrant and chip butty! And of course we had a selection of those most poppy sounds of the Brit persuasion, courtesy of blur (no capital!) and Oasis. Swagger, confidence and NOW on the money as always. All of this and much, much more awaits - including SPARKS! Yes, actual Russell and Ron Mael on a NOW album!Join Anna Doble - broadcaster, journalist and author of ‘Connection is a Song: Coming Up and Coming Out Through the Music of the 90s' - as we head down some fascinating rabbit holes and unearth not just a year of memories, but a whole decade of emotional and personal stories, interwoven by the power of music. And as always, NOW serves as the perfect snapshot of pop bringing it all back home.AND we pose some of 1994 biggest questions:When did Britpop actually begin?Which band followed Anna around Leeds on a bus? (well, not actually)Is 2wo Third3 the first ever case sensitive password? Are Shampoo the centre of the pop universe?Ultimate KAOS - why?Join us for NOW29 - it's SO GOOD and INCREDIBLE!
On the PRmoment Podcast today, Pangolin PR co-founders David Phillips and Will Cookson reflect on ten years of running their agency.Pangolin is a consumer PR shop in London with a fee incline of £1.75m. Clients include Pernod and Pepsi, and it employs 17 people. On the show today, we will reflect on their regrets, lessons and achievements as they look back on ten years of owning their own business. To deal with the elephant in the room straight away - some listeners out there might be pointing out that many firms have exceeded £1.76 m over ten years, but in a way, that's the whole point. Ultimately this is a story of success but only with a few wrong turns along the way, which makes it an interesting story. Before we start, if you haven't already, look at our new event PR Masterclass: The Agency Growth Forum. At this one event, 22 experts will give 11 Masterclasses on essential elements of managing a modern, profitable and successful PR firm. Finally, thanks so much to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors the PRCA.Here's a summary of what David, Will and Ben discussed on the show:2 mins David and Will talk about their “real naivety about setting up a business” when they started their firm.“I genuinely think we were the most naive co-founders back in the day…we were senior account directors when we set up the business.”4 mins Do they wish they'd given it a few more years in a big agency before starting on their own? “We've learnt everything on the job..it's meant it's been slower.”“We're not natural risk takers.”“We were both in our late 20s and didn't have massive commitments…if someone were to ask me to set up a business now, it would be a very different story.”9 mins Freuds has a mythical status amongst some consumer PR folks - is that a vital cog in your story?10 mins When Pangolin launched, it was called Caffeine. Will talks us through why they had to change the name?“There's a wider lesson there about what to do when it goes legal.”15 mins Will and David tell us how they bought a ticket to win the Pepsi account.“Dave slightly overcooked it on the cocktails the night before.”“It just shows that you have to take a risk at some point, and it might work out.”19 mins David talks us through why they nearly decided to say no to the Pernod Ricard account in their first year of business.“We had a look at the current clients on our roster, which included a birdseed brand and a few others, and thought let's do it and see where it takes us!... It's led to a 10-year relationship with Pernod Ricard.”24.30 mins 70% of Pangolin's work is project-based. David and Will talk us through why that is.28 mins 50% of Pangolin's work is UK-based, and 50% is global. Why is that? It's quite rare for a consumer PR shop of its size.30 mins What do global consumer PR campaigns look like at the moment? Are they a media brief or a social media brief?“Brands want a percentage share of conversation online.”“We've had the best year to date; revenue has grown by 25%.”“New business feels a bit slower, a bit stickier.”34 mins How big do David and Will want Pangolin to get?37 mins Do David and Will believe they have benefited from founding Pangolin together, or do they wish they'd been solo founders?“Dave and I talk about things A LOT!.... Sometimes we need to stop talking about stuff and just do it.”“When we were at Freuds, W

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Chris (AKA Dirk the Dice) returns to Derry and Toms to discuss Michael Moorcock's sort-of-memoir of his time in LA and wider California in Letters From Hollywood. Along the way we drink fusty northern beer, console one another about Pernod-soaked catastrophes in our salad days, wistfully recall the Moorcock/Tolkien Weekender and muse on what form it could take in the future (Dannus/Lud-in-the-Mist Premier Inn Takeover anyone?*).

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
