This episode is a straight-up masterclass on what it means to lead, coach, and transform schools from the inside. I sat down with Erinn Cottman, a powerhouse instructional coach and former AP who is making sure leaders actually lead in ways that serve Black and Brown students well. We got into the admin-teacher tension, the mindset shifts educators need to thrive, and how coaching (when done well) changes everything for teachers and ultimately students. If you're the type of teacher that believes in rigor, joy, and student voice in our schools and classrooms then you're gonna be to need to press play.Links + Resources MentionedErinn's Podcast: Next Level Coaching with Erinn CottmanCoaching Resource BundleMonthly Free WebinarsJoin Erinn's Email List for tools + tips
You are not crazy. You're just out here trying to be a revolutionary in a system that wasn't built for you to win. In this episode of The Resistance, I get real about the silent struggle so many educators are carrying, feeling like the only one in your building who gives a damn about joy, student voice, and justice. If you've ever sat in a PD wondering if you're the problem because you actually care about your kids more than their test scores... this one's for you.
Welcome to the first episode of The Resistance, a podcast for underground educators fighting the system from the inside. This first episode is my truth about why I do this work and who I do it for. It's an unpolished walk through my life, growing up as the oldest daughter of a mother battling addiction and mental health challenges, navigating seven schools in seven years, being thrust into adult responsibilities before I could even spell them, and still showing up every day ready to learn, lead, and love hard. The way we've been trained to teach, manage, and “raise scores” is doing real harm. The Resistance is where we unlearn that mess. We stop saying “that's just the way it is” and start building classrooms that center humanity, healing, and high expectations.Whether you're a day-one revolutionary or just starting to question the system, this episode is your call to get in formation. Welcome to the final episode of the Black on Black Education Podcast! I started this podcast in 2020 and after over 130 episodes this is the last one (but don't worry as long as you are subscribed you'll be around for what's next!). For our final episode, I sit down with longtime friend and revolutionary educator Tee Freeman, PhD candidate, founder of Takeover Academy, and unapologetic advocate for Black youth development. What starts as a reunion turns into a sermon on everything that's not working in our schools, and what we must do if we're serious about change. This one is just two educators calling out the nonsense and calling us all into deeper commitment. This may be the last episode under this name, but it's only the beginning of a powerful movement.Step into the next chapter with us: join the Liberation Library, an online community for teachers fighting the system from within without burning out.Connect with Tee FreemanIG: @conscious_tLinkedIn: Tee FreemanJoin the MovementJoin the Liberation LibraryBuy the I'm Just a Kid/Teacher Journal SetBring the Student Action Board to your school learn more hereSubscribe & share this episode with the real ones in your life who are ready to DO the work.
In this week's episode of the Black on Black Education Podcast, I sit down with the Dr. Jocelyn Logan-Friend, an education strategist who's worked in every part of the education system, from the classroom to the U.S. Department of Ed. Together, we broke down what it means to be qualified to teach, why transforming classroom culture starts with your mindset, and how we empower students to question everything including us. We also talk about our upcoming trip to South Africa to run a camp for teenagers in Cape Town, and what it means to lead a silent revolution in education. share this episode with another educator who's about this life.Resources + Links Mentioned:Donate to support Black on Black Education's Adventure 2025 trip to South Africa: Support the TripLearn more about Dr. Jocelyn's work: Logan and FriendsFollow Logan & Friends on Instagram: @loganandfriends.communityExplore the Student Action Board Curriculum: Student Action BoardIf you're ready to build a classroom that balances rigor and joy—don't just listen, act. In this episode of The Black on Black Education Podcast, I sat down with Dr. Cedric B. Howard—a seasoned higher ed leader who's talks to us about what it really takes to transform education for our students. We didn't sugarcoat ANYTHING. We talked about the systemic barriers that keep so many of our kids stuck. We got into the deep importance of early education, the impact of trauma on learning, and why community support isn't optional, it's necessary.I walked away from this conversation reminded that educators aren't just here to deliver content but be the catalysts for change. And if we're not actively working to build systems that are equitable, inclusive, and rooted in love and truth, then what are we really doing?Links Mentioned: Listen to this episode next: Starting a Silent Revolution: The 5 Steps to Reclaiming Your Power in the ClassroomKeep Learning: Take my email course: Revolutionize Your Classroom: Build a Student Feedback System That WorksStay in Contact with our Guest: Reach out to Dr. Howard on LinkedIn or Instagram.Join the Liberation Library, THEE online community for educators fighting the system from the inside, without burning out. Welcome to The Resistance: An Underground Educators Podcast In this very first episode of The Resistance—formerly known as the Black on Black Education podcast—I'm telling the full story. The real one. The one I've only hinted at before. This rebrand isn't just about changing a name. It's about standing 10 toes down in what I believe: educators deserve better, and our kids deserve freedom, joy, and justice in their classrooms right now.In this episode, I'm opening up about:Why I rebranded the podcast and what it means to be a part of The ResistanceGetting fired—and how that experience revealed just how toxic school cultures can beWhat it feels like to be perceived as "disruptive" simply for doing what's right for kidsThe moment I realized I was starting to mimic the harm I was fighting againstHow I realigned through reflection, rest, and radical honestyThe three promises I made to myself this school year: let go of what I can't control, have more fun, and take care of myselfThis isn't just my story. It's the story of so many of us who've been told to sit down, stay quiet, or follow the rules in systems that were never built for us—or for the young people we serve. If you've ever cried in your car after work, felt silenced, or been penalized for telling the truth while still teaching your students to use their voices—this episode is for you.Links mentioned:Don't Be Like Dan: A Deep Dive into Power Hoarding in SchoolsI'm Gonna Have the Best School Year of My Life EpisodeReflection Prompts:When have you been penalized for telling the truth?Have you cried in your car after work? Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants you to read banned books! This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with academic librarian Amber and nonprofit witch Lindsay of the Queer Liberation Library (@queerliblib). The QLL got its start in 2023 and has since curated a collection of 2,715 unique LGBTQ+ ebooks and audiobooks accessible to anyone in the United States (regardless of zip code) for the low, low cost of absolutely nothing! Once you sign up (for free!), you will be able to check out ebooks and audiobooks from an ever-expanding collection through Libby. They have everything from popular queer adult fiction to LGBTQ+ poetry, manga, and children's books. In today's environment of book bans and censorship, projects like the Queer Liberation Library are more important than ever as they provide access to titles that local physical library branches may not be able to stock. We talk with Amber and Lindsay about how the Queer Liberation Library got its start, going from “7 friends in a trench coat” with a big dream to create a nonprofit to “7 friends in a trench coat” with an extensive, fully functional digital library. We also talk about how the curation process works, the intricacies of licensing restrictions on book borrowing, and all the little behind the scenes things that make the project possible. One of the best things about QLL is the accessibility. While there are already well-established physical libraries dedicated to LGBTQ+ books, they are not accessible for someone like a queer or trans youth with unsupportive parents or someone living in a more restrictive state where the physical libraries may have less ability to combat queer censorship. Digital collections like the one at QLL are lifesavers in these cases because they can be accessed for free from anywhere in the US, providing a way around any potential local physical barriers to access. You can join the QLL today and start borrowing books right away by going to their website. And if you do happen to live in a less queer-friendly location and are in any way nervous about being caught browsing the site, the QLL provides an easy exit button that redirects visitors to weather.com in the blink of an eye. No matter how we identify, we all have a lot to unpack. While there is a multitude of texts with universal application, community organizer Krista R. Pérez has written a book specifically with a BIPOC audience in mind. In Unearthing Our Roots, Pérez encourages advocates, activists, and leaders from historically marginalized groups to implement transformative and healing practices within their communities. Pérez extends an invitation to readers to unearth and uproot racist, anti-Black, ableist, and other biases that fracture relationships surrounding their communities. With decades of lived experience and a multidisciplinary approach, Pérez presents guided journal prompts for examining our own intentions, strategies for unraveling harmful biases and behaviors, and transformative and restorative practices for communities of historically marginalized groups at both micro and macro levels. Partially funded by the Tacoma Arts Commission, Unearthing Our Roots is a book that doubles as a clarion call. Krista R. Pérez aims to share her story, all parts of her story, including her softest and strongest parts, her sacred nature, the joy of motherhood, and her deeply rooted cultural values, to create spaces for Women of Color to show up in all capacities. Krista is also a proponent of integrated leadership, in which we bring all parts of ourselves to our professional workspaces. By making our whole selves visible we learn to value our whole selves, and others, as others and community members. Jasmine M. Pulido is a Filipina American writer-activist, small business owner, and mother. Her written work has been featured in the South Seattle Emerald, International Examiner, The Postscript, and Give Grief a Voice. Her work has been performed through Velasco Arts and Bindlestiff Studio. She recently wrote her first play, “The Master's Tool” exploring the struggles of BIPOC folks in Equity, Diversity, Inclusion work in white-dominant non-profit workplaces. Jasmine is pursuing her Master's in Social Change at Starr King School for the Ministry. She writes a bi-weekly substack called “Liberation Library” and is currently working on her first novel. GUESTBettina Johnson is a Chicago born and raised abolitionist organizer, Co-founder and current Steering Committee member of Liberation Library and on the Steering Committee for the AfroSocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus of the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). She is also on the Steering Committee of Chicago DSA’s #DefundCPD Campaign, and Co-lead for the Training Committee of the Black Abolitionist Network-steered #DefundCPD CampaignOVERVIEWBrownTown invites Bettina Johnson to talk all things #DefundCPD campaign, nuances and strategies for abolitionist organizing, non-hierarchal structures, building responsive institutions, and training the newly politicized.Bettina begins by sharing her journey growing up in Chicago and finding her movement home in various organizations. The gang compares and contrasts their work and thoughts on abolition and broader "defund police" campaigns pre- and post-George Floyd uprisings before digging into the momentum theory of organizing--turning the energy and politicization of highly visible moments into sustainable movements. As Bettina notes, "we need as many people and as many entry points to start that [politicization] process that feels good for people." BrownTown and Bettina discuss various entry points into grassroots work and the non-hierarchal structures and autonomous actions that folks are encouraged to take within more current and common decentralized movements. Near the end of the conversation, the gang gets in the weeds about #DefundCPD in Chicago and other defund campaigns nation-wide naming the specific campaign goals as abolitionist steps and not a reformist reforms. However, they center nuanced inter-movement discussions about the role of "refunding" and what responsive institutions should and could like that that do not re-ify the harm of the prison-industrial complex under a different name.#DefundCPD educated, organized, and mobilized thousands of Chicagoans around the abolitionist demand to defund the Chicago Police Department on the heels of a global uprisings against state violence and white supremacy and for Black lives. Now, a campaign coming out of hibernation in April 2021, what lessons have we learned from 2020? Why is hibernation necessary for movement work? Building upon years, decades, centuries of work, what types of organizing strategies and tactics need we build on or alter in terms of autonomous coalition-building, trust in camaraderie, and exhausting all of our skills in our work towards liberation? There's importance in collaboration and experimentation when it comes to organizing. But what does that work look like in a community you're not from? Liberation Library co-founder Bettina Johnson's intelligence, humility, curiosity, and just straight-up care for people infuses this episode. For Transmission 6 I had a stimulating conversation with my friend Sarah Bieda. Sarah is a consulting sorceress who practices a form of subversive magic technology that is accessible to everyone. She works with visionary humans who have big visions for the world and need a bit of magic counsel to bring it into existence. This form of subversive magic is available to everyone and is not set aside for people who identify as witches or occultists. We have a deep-dive chat about how to use this form of magic and how the value of transmuting traumatic experiences build our confidence and empowerment. One note about this recording, Sarah is highly empathic and has a sensitive affect on technology. There were quite a few times where she cuts out and the call was even dropped in the middle, but she explains why this happens to her often, just a note to be patient getting through a couple spots in the recording. I feel like it just adds to her mystique. If you’ve been enjoying the Liberate Your Self podcast, there a couple ways to support it. One is to go to iTunes and leave a positive review! Wrongfully Convicted! This show was recorded live at The Hideout in Chicago on May 23, 2017. Seemingly every week in Chicago, the City is paying out millions to wrongfully convicted people who spent years -- sometimes decades in prison. Those who have their lives destroyed by a broken criminal justice system are typically poor and lacking the support system to fight a wrongful conviction. Thankfully, there are women on the front lines working often for free to clear their names. For our May 23 show, we'll talk to some of Chicago's most powerful wrongful conviction fighters. From a lawyer who helped free a CPD torture victim who spent 30 years behind bars, to former host of MTV's “Unlocking the Truth,” we'll hear about what it's like defending people accused of heinous crimes -- and getting them out of prison -- all while trying to change the system as a whole. OUR GUESTS Jennifer Bonjean is the owner and founder of Bonjean Law Group, PLLC. She is a seasoned attorney with extensive experience in criminal defense and civil rights litigation. Bonjean also specializes in appellate, post-conviction, and habeas corpus litigation. Her passion and tenacity drives her to aggressively fight for individuals who have been wronged by the criminal justice system. Bonjean works tirelessly to reverse the convictions of innocent people wrongly incarcerated. She is committed to exposing the rampant police and prosecutorial misconduct that often leads to wrongful convictions. In 2014 the Chicago Innocence Project awarded Bonjean the Humanitarian of the year Award for her work on Stanley Wrice's appeal.Eva Nagao is the Managing Director of the Exoneration Project, a pro bono legal clinic that works to overturn wrongful convictions. In her time in Chicago, Eva has served on the Board of Directors of the youth-driven Chicago Freedom School, and as a long-time propaganda specialist for Project Nia. She continues to work with explicitly abolitionist outfits like Liberation Library, sending books to incarcerated youth, and the People's Response Team, documenting police-involved shootings in Chicago. Once, she hosted a true crime series on MTV called “Unlocking the Truth.” Eva's grandparents met as prisoners in Manzanar during WWII, and they never talked about it. She strives to talk about it as much as possible. Deana G. Lewis is a 2016-17 Mellon Sawyer Pre-Doctoral Fellow and a doctoral candidate in the Educational Policy Studies Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Her research interests include Black girlhood studies, the school/prison nexus, and youth incarceration. More specifically, Deana is interested in Black girls' experiences within the school to prison pipeline and how their experiences have been left out of discourses about youth incarceration in general. As an educator, Deana teaches, facilitates, and holds discussions that engage race, gender, sexuality, and education for multigenerational audiences. Currently, Deana is a Research Assistant with the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy (IRRPP) at UIC, where she is working on a report called the “State of Racial Justice in Chicago” and a summer program for K-12 educators. Outside of school and work, Deana is a member of Love & Protect, a support committee dedicated to supporting of marginalized gender identities who are criminalized or harmed by state and interpersonal violence. She is also a founding member of the Just Practice Collaborative, whose purpose is to build communities' capacity to effectively and empathically respond to intimate partner violence and sexual assault without relying primarily on police or other state-based systems.Hope you enjoy the show! In my first full-length documentary, I review "A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State" written by civil libertarian and Constitutional attorney John W. Whitehead. In doing so, I illustrate and explain the major themes in the book with video content and my own commentary. THIS IS A MUST-SEE. In this first video/documentary style podcast, I review Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's seminal work On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society. In doing so, I examine mankind's inherent resistance to taking human life. Next, we take a look at the US Army's discovery of this resistance and their subsequent efforts to overcome it. Finally, I examine Dave Grossman himself, his overarching thesis, and his side business, where he conditions government goons to kill reflexively. In some circles, it has been claimed that Chief Justice John Marshall unjustly seized the power of Judicial Review and apportioned it to the Supreme Court. Unsurprisingly, the truth is more complicated and is detailed in the contents of another great work penned by William J. Watkins, Jr. There is much more to be said about this issue, and it truly deserves a few full episodes.
