Hello Tribe and welcome back.Liz Martin is the author of the critically acclaimed bookStill Standing and our very special guest today.Born in the Liberties, Dublin in 1967, Liz went to the Holy Faith Convent school in The Coombe. From a very early age she knew the importance of education and was often found tucked away in Kevin Street library with her nose in a book. At age 19, a letter arrived from Mountjoy Prison from Liz's then boyfriend letting her know he had tested HIV positive. It is a difficult relationship but it was hard to leave. However, in 1991, she found the courage to finally leave Dublin and with the help of Women's Aid Liz settles down in a house with a barn in a rural part of County Galway. Liz and the children are happy. During winter that year, Liz becomes ill and asks her GP to do a HIV antibody test. The results come back positive. Her world falls apart once more as one by one her children are tested until it comes to her new born baby. The GP calls him a “miracle baby” as he too returns with a negative result. Liz reaches out toAIDS WEST, a support organisation. She joins a peer support group and finds other positive friends. Can a credit union with nearly 500,000 members and $9 billion in assets still authentically serve its local community? As consolidation trends continue and asset size is increasingly seen as a key indicator of success, it's important to reflect on how these evolving trends impact the cooperative principles and the credit union difference. Liz Martin, Vice President of Marketing at OnPoint Community Credit Union (a PixelSpoke client), believes that when growth is rooted in a clear WHY, it can exist in tandem with a strong community focus. She joins us to talk about how OnPoint has grown while still honoring its history as a cooperative founded for teachers, why “branch deserts” motivated them to dramatically expand their branch footprint in 2021, and how to create a personalized and hyper-local experience across digital and in-person channels. This month's BIG Question: How can credit unions grow in a sustainable and intentional way while still staying true to their local roots?

Bruce has always been in awe of Liz Martin ever since he read about her and the National Road Transport Museum Hall of Fame in Alice Springs. She was at the helm of the Hall for 25 years where she managed the day to day running's, volunteers and spectacular reunions that were recognised worldwide. She still does it better than anybody to this day and it's our absolute pleasure to have Liz on Copy Southbound.

In this episode, we meet Liz Tinkham, a career-long consultant who describes herself as “pre-tired.” After graduating from Ohio State with a degree in aerospace engineering, Liz worked as a consultant for over thirty years at Accenture. She is a professor at the University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business and serves on the boards of several non-profit and for-profit companies. In this interview, Liz shares actionable things she does each week to stay in touch and current, her biggest piece of advice, and how she dealt with a difficult time in her career. Liz reflects on the most challenging point in her career; after taking the lead on a project that failed “miserably,” she took some time off to regroup. FOR almost 30 years now Liz Martin has been the driving force behind the national road transport hall of fame museum in Alice Springs. More recently she’s been trying to take more of a back seat, and focus on other interests, but after a recent community forum meeting in Alice Springs cast aspersions on her work there, she spoke to Big Rigs editor James Graham for this year’s final Big Rigs Podcast to give her side of the story. This week we also speak to NSW truckie Mike Williams, who had a recent heart attack scare while driving a chemical tanker in North Queensland. He speaks about that frightening experience, and shares his health message to other drivers who may be ignoring the warning signs. And to cap it all off, we’ve got Gary Williams’ tribute to Slim Dusty to share with you, as well as a tribute that our host Graham Harsant (better known as Kermie) wrote about Santa a few years back to get you into the spirit of the Christmas season. Make sure you tune in!

058 Liz Martin—General Federation of Women’s Clubs Changing the Power of One to Power to the Nth Degree Liz Martin believes in the power of people—especially women—joining together to make a difference in their community. But she’s also discovered how one person, using her specific skills, can make that power even greater. When Liz joined the Brentwood/Franklin Woman's Service Club she found much more than she expected. As a part of the international General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), her local club is one of the nearly 3,000 (combined membership of 80,000) working independently and together on significant issues, including supporting the arts, preserving natural resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement, and working toward world peace and understanding. The mission and history of GFWC attracted her to the club. She has stayed for more than a decade because of the benefits: She has met great people she might not have otherwise, expanded her knowledge of her community and of important national and international issues, and participated in specific projects locally and beyond. As club members got to know Liz, she was asked to be the treasurer. No problem! She definitely had the skills. Liz’s career was as a financial planner. Taking on the job was a way for this one person to give back. But she quickly discovered a new challenge: bringing their financial systems into the 21st century in terms of bookkeeping, computerization, and taking advantage of investment opportunities that would grow the organization’s dollars and consequently its potential for more good. Actually, that was the easy part, according to Liz. The bigger challenge was to change the thinking of the group from “we don’t want to lose any money” to “we can safely grow the money.” Fortunately, Liz’s years of helping individuals and families make that same transition to success have paid off, enabling the club members to greatly increase their impact on projects and issues they are passionate about. One person—investing heart, time, energy, and skill—joining with others of like mind and commitment changes the power of one to power to the nth degree! For more about the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, visit gfwc.org. To learn more about the Brentwood/Franklin Woman's Service Club, go to bwctn.net.
Your enjoyment of Clue: The Musical, now running at Napa’s Lucky Penny Community Arts Center, may be wholly dependent on two factors – 1.) Your familiarity with and affection for the classic board game upon which it is based and 2.) Your familiarity with and affection for the performing artists involved. Both of those will go a long way in getting you through the show which, though cast with top comedic talent, suffers from a weak script and unimaginative score. First produced in Baltimore in 1995, it opened off-Broadway in 1997 and closed after a scant 29 performances. Despite its lack of success, the show has become a staple of community theatre, no doubt playing off the goodwill and sense of nostalgia that many people have for childhood amusements. That goodwill is tested. It is, in essence, an evening of murder mystery dinner theatre, albeit without the dinner. You get fourteen songs instead. The show opens with Mr. Boddy (a jaunty Barry Martin) gleefully admitting to his eventual murder and facilitating the audience’s selection of perpetrator, location and weapon. Clues are revealed throughout the evening and audience members who wish to “play” are given clue sheets with which to deduce the answers to the mystery. There are apparently 216 possible solutions to the crime which no doubt created an interesting challenge for the cast. And what a cast it is that director Taylor Bartolucci has gathered. The suspects are of course Mrs. Peacock (Daniela Innocenti Beem), Professor Plum (Tim Setzer), Miss Scarlett (Danielle Debow), Colonel Mustard (Larry Williams), Mrs. White (Phillip Percy Williams), and Mr. Green (Michael Scott Wells). They’re joined by the aforementioned Mr. Boddy and a second-act detective (Heather Buck). It’s a shame that a cast this talented and who are proven laugh-getters aren’t given much with which to work. Not that they don’t try. What laughs there are in the script and songs (and there are a couple) are amplified by the terrific comedic skills of the cast. Beem’s cabaret experience pays off as Mrs. Peacock works the audience from her grand entrance to exit. Her big number, “Once a Widow”, may be the show’s musical highlight. Williams is fun as the festooned Colonel Mustard. Setzer’s constipated Professor Plum is almost over-shadowed by his pomegranate pants. Philip Percy Williams also works the audience – both vocally and physically - as Mrs. White but his choice of accent sometimes made his song lyrics unintelligible. Wells’ shady Mr. Green and Daniel Debow’s lounge lizard-ette Miss Scarlett play well off of (and with) each other. Credit should be given to Staci Arriaga for some creative choreography and for managing to make pretty effective use of the limited stage space. Musical Director Craig Burdette and his band did what they could with a lackluster score. The set/prop design (also by Bartolucci) and costuming (Liz Martin and Liesl Seitz Buchbinder) do evoke the original game elements. Clue: The Musical isn’t terrible - it couldn’t be with all the talent involved – but it isn’t very good either. The term “middling” comes to mind. People who attend expecting something like the 1985 cult film starring Tim Curry are likely to be disappointed. (Interestingly, there is a new non-musical theatrical adaptation of the film which just premiered last month.) So, if it’s not the cast and it’s not the directors and it’s not the designers at fault, who’s responsible for this theatrical misdemeanor? In the vernacular of the game: The writers. In the theater. With this script. Clue: The Musical plays Thursdays through Sundays through June 18 at Napa’s Lucky Penny Community Arts Center. For more information, go to luckypennynapa.com
