Welcome back to Ditch the Labcoat. Today's episode dives deep into a topic that's been quietly reshaping lives and families across the globe: gambling addiction. Host Dr. Mark Bonta sits down with Dr. Daniela Lobo, a leading expert in addiction psychiatry, to explore just how dramatically gambling—especially online and sports betting—has surged in prevalence, fueled by intensive marketing and made even more accessible by the pandemic's isolation.Together, Dr. Bonta and Dr. Lobo break down the reality behind those flashy ads and glossy casino images, peeling back the curtain on the true costs of problem gambling. They explore not just the personal financial and mental fallout, but the ripple effects that devastate families, drive up debt, worsen mental health struggles, and even intersect with substance use disorders. As gambling apps, sports betting, and even crypto-trading continue to blur the lines between entertainment and addiction, the doctors unpack why so many young adults—and increasingly, teens—find themselves hooked.Dr. Lobo shares practical insights for recognizing gambling problems, supporting loved ones, and opening honest conversations with kids. Most importantly, they question whether the billions gained in gambling revenue are truly worth the social and health costs we're only beginning to acknowledge. If you've ever wondered what really drives gambling addiction, how to spot it, or what responsible action looks like for individuals and society, you won't want to miss this eye-opening, evidence-based conversation. Let's ditch the lab coat and get real about gambling in our modern age.Episode LessonsGambling Addiction: Not a Choice — A medical disorder with devastating consequences, not a weakness or bad habit.Online Gambling's Rapid Expansion — Pandemic and marketing fueled a surge, making betting more accessible than ever.Marketing Drives Gambling Behaviors — Aggressive ads and sports integration normalize betting, increasing risks across all ages.Health Impact Beyond Money — Gambling harms mental, emotional, and even physical health, adding layers of stress.Younger Generations at Risk — Sports and digital platforms expose youth to gambling without proper safeguards.Overlap With Other Addictions — Gambling often co-occurs with mental health and substance use disorders.Paths to Treatment and Recovery — Counseling, family support, financial planning, and early intervention provide hope.Financial Ruin and Family Toll — Hidden gambling devastates households, with debt triggering further destructive cycles.Policy and Regulation Matter — Weak oversight allows profit-driven expansion while shifting costs to families.Prevention Through Education — Open dialogue and awareness reduce risks, counter marketing, and build resilience.Episode Timestamps03:21 – Addiction's Evolving Forms: Gambling Alert 07:08 – COVID-19's Impact on Gambling Behavior 11:56 – Gambling's Mental and Physical Toll 13:48 – Accessibility Fuels Gambling Issues 18:03 – Teens, Gambling, and Sports Obsession 22:25 – Problem Gambling's Significant Impact 25:36 – Gambling Disorders and Mental Health 29:18 – iGaming Self-Exclusion & Support 30:30 – Supporting Families with Addicted Loved Ones 36:00 – Modern Gambling: Signs and Challenges 39:02 – Gambling and Risk Awareness Conversation 42:33 – Understanding Moderation and Gambling Risks 45:23 – Ethics of Gambling Expansion 47:03 – Cautionary Insights on Gambling AppsDISCLAMER >>>>>> The Ditch Lab Coat podcast serves solely for general informational purposes and does not serve as a substitute for professional medical services such as medicine or nursing. Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 It has been more than a generation since the Cardinals picked in the top five for the MLB Draft, and in a week the Cardinals have a chance for a transformative selection that could come define their next era. A confluence of events meet them at the MLB Draft in Atlanta on Sunday as they hold the No. 5 pick a year after taking J.J. Wetherholt at No. 7, they are deep into a transition year with a new front office leader poised to take over, and they are certain to have access to one of the top three college pitchers available in this draft. To capture and explore this moment in Cardinals' draft history, Baseball America editor in chief J.J. Cooper joins the Best Podcast in Baseball. With St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold, Cooper discusses the scope of talent available in the 2025 draft, trends that suggest where the Cardinals will look, and the upside of the talent likely available to them at No. 5. Matt Holliday's son, Ethan, is not expected to get past the Colorado Rockies at No. 4. If he does get to No. 5, the Cardinals are poised to select him. If not, there will be a high-ceiling high school infielder available, an established college shortstop available, or at least one of the three top college lefties. Cooper and Goold discuss how the choice could reveal the Cardinals' view of their ability to contend. Florida State lefty Jamie Arnold would be a pick that reaches the majors within 12 months as more and more early picks are doing. Oklahoma high schooler Eli Willits, Reggie's son, would be a longer-term pick who might impact the Cardinals most as they enter the 2030s. Baseball America will flood the zone with coverage from the MLB Draft that begins in primetime Sunday night from Atlanta and concludes Monday. Follow Baseball America on YouTube for recent conversations about sleeper prospects in the minors, including Cardinals' Class AA starter Ixan Henderson. The Post-Dispatch will be present at the draft to bring coverage of the Cardinals' first pick and then coverage throughout the week from the All-Star Game festivities at Atlanta's Truist Park. In its 13th season as one of the go-to podcasts on Cardinals baseball, the Best Podcast in Baseball is sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis. It is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold.

What if everything you're chasing—the dream job, the perfect relationship, the financial security—can't actually deliver the contentment you're seeking? This profound question sits at the heart of our exploration into true satisfaction and spiritual peace in a world obsessed with achievement.Drawing from timeless wisdom and contemporary insights, we unpack why so many successful people remain fundamentally unhappy despite having everything they once dreamed of. The answer, as revealed through both historical examples and scriptural promises, points to a spiritual foundation that transcends external circumstances. The Pilgrims, despite facing unimaginable hardships where most lost their lives to illness and starvation, displayed remarkable contentment in their writings. Their peace flowed from an unshakable faith that whatever happened in this world was temporary compared to eternity with their Creator. This eternal perspective—beautifully captured in Revelation 21's promise that God "will wipe away every tear" and eliminate all suffering—offers a framework for contentment that material success simply cannot provide.William Cullen Bryant, father of American poets, recognized this spiritual truth when he wrote that there could be "no admiration too profound, no love too warm, no gratitude too deep" toward Jesus Christ. Bryant understood that our society's peace and cohesion depend significantly on Christian influence, even extending to those who don't explicitly acknowledge it.The implications extend beyond personal satisfaction to our collective national character. As we've drifted from these spiritual foundations, we've witnessed increasing social fragmentation that threatens the very fabric of American community.Ready to experience the contentment that transcends circumstances? Make time today to read scripture, pray, and create space for God's presence in your busy life. As one pastor noted, those who know they've "won the lottery of eternal life" should let their faces reflect that joy—offering a powerful testimony to a world desperately seeking lasting peace.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

We all know that small, consistent actions pay off over time… but when it comes to marketing our photography businesses, too many of us are still chasing quick wins and big bursts of effort that - let's be honest - often lead to burnout and disappointment. When things slow down, it's easy to fall into the trap of panic marketing… throwing out a flurry of posts, sending a couple of emails after months of silence, maybe even dreaming up a last-minute sale to get the calendar moving again. But that kind of all-or-nothing energy? It's like buying a lottery ticket and hoping it will solve everything. If you've been feeling the pressure to “make something happen” with your marketing, this episode is your invitation to take a breath… and take a slower, steadier approach that actually gets results (even if it feels boring at first).Resources: New to the podcast? On this episode of Talking Buffalo, it's another edition of The Podbag, chockfull with submissions from listeners that Patrick Moran is responding to, including a submission from a listener who says Buffalo Bills edge rusher Joey Bosa should be treated like a lottery ticket with zero expectations. The Bills drafted three defensive lineman with their first four picks and coupled with what they already, they shouldn't have any real expectations for Bosa this season, at least according to the submission. Patrick takes great exception to that, saying the money spent on Bosa automatically makes him someone that should be counted on to have a very good season, and not just the playoffs. Winning your division comes first and foremost and then home field advantage matters too, both things that come as a result of the regular season, which is why Patrick also takes exception to those who say guys like Bosa only need to matter for January. Also, another listener is worried about the defensive line on a whole in part because it appears the Bills are banking on significant contributions from three rookies. Another explains what it will take for the Bills defense to be great this season and adds that Patrick and many others are sleeping on second year safety Cole Bishop. There's more Bills topics and also a few Sabres things as well, including a comical plan on how the Sabres can even get worse next season. That plus an interesting Sean McDermott with a Bills beat reporter and much more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time.Special thanks to local Buffalo band, Orange Zest for allowing us to use their awesome single, “Old Friends” as the new official intro music for Talking Buffalo. Thieves used a stolen card to buy a winning French lottery ticket worth 500,000 euros ($523,000). But they vanished before cashing in—and now they're among France's most famous fugitives. The man whose card was stolen, identified in police documents as Jean-David E., is offering to split the cash with the lucky winners. He wants his wallet back, too. The thieves, meanwhile, face the risk of arrest. The state lottery operator La Française des Jeux, or FDJ, said that no one had submitted the ticket to cash out. "A totally incredible story, very funny," Jean-David's lawyer, Pierre Debuisson, told The Associated Press. Jean-David discovered in early February that his backpack had been stolen from his car in the southern city of Toulouse, including bank cards and other documents, the lawyer said. Jean-David asked his bank to block the card and learned it had already been used in a local shop. At the shop, a vendor told him two apparently homeless men had used one of his cards to buy the winning scratch-off lottery ticket. Jean-David filed a police complaint about the theft, but is ready to withdraw it if the thieves come forward so that they can share the money, Debuisson said. Prosecutors may try to seize the winnings, considering them illegally obtained gains, the lawyer said. The lawyer launched a national appeal asking the perpetrators to contact his office to make a deal. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
