Book Vs. Movie: LauraThe 1943 Novel Vs. the 1944 Classic FilmThe Margos continue with the 1940s with the film noir genre--Laura starring the gorgeous Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, and Vincent Price. Based on the 1943 novel Ring Twice for Laura by Vera Caspary, the story of the mysterious Laura Hunt, who is found murdered (or was she?), was initially serialized in Collier's magazine in October and November 1942. It became a hit novel and was released as an Armed Services Edition to the troops in World War 2. Narrated in the first person, “Laura” is going murdered at her apartment door with her face left unrecognizable. Detective Mark McPherson tries to find her killer and focuses on her former lover, Waldo Lydecker, and her finance Shelby Carpenter. In the middle of the investigation, Laura shows up, surprised that someone was killed in her place. So who is the real victim and killer? The movie, directed by Otto Preminger, brings Gene Tierney as Laura, and from there, the character of Lydecker changes from an obese restauranter to a lanky writer who works in his tub. Dana Andrews plays the detective who falls in love with Laura (and who can blame him?!) The film's production had intense disagreements between the movie studio, the actors, the directors hired, and even columnist Walter Winchell had a say in the plot. But it is now considered a movie classic. So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? In this ep the Margos discuss:The life of writer Vera CasparayThe intriguing plot and why it is considered a mystery/romance pictureThe troubled productionThe cast of the 1944 film: Gene Tierney (Laura Hunt,) Dana Andrews (Mark McPherson,) Vincent Price (Shelby Carpenter,) and Judith Anderson playing Ann Treadwell.Clips used:“Laura” (1944) themeMark McPherson calls Laura a “dame.”Christopher Cross “Laura”Laura (1945 trailer)Mark McPherson meets Waldo LydeckerLaura meets Shelby“The interrogation scene”Music: David Raskin and Johnny MercerBook Vs. Released the same year as the better-remembered DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944), LAURA is an evocative noir that both plays in and interrogates the femme fatale trope so crucial to the genre. In death, Laura Hunt is remembered by the people in her life as kind, beautiful, generous, powerful – just about everything a lover (or a friend, a fraud, or a cop) could ask for. But when the truth comes out, the audience is left to determine how much of the myth is really true, and what elements of Laura's life are being hijacked to serve someone else's narrative. In this episode, we discuss LAURA's focus on possession and ownership of identity, its rhetoric for the end of the American dream as World War II came to a close, and how the film's queer undertones complicate its central, brutal conflict. Radar Men from the Moon is a 1952 colorless Republic Pictures' 12-chapter movie serial, the first Commando Cody serial starring newcomer George Wallace as Cody, Aline Towne as his sidekick Joan Gilbert, and serial veteran Roy Barcroft as the evil Retik, the Ruler of the Moon. The director was Fred C. Brannon, with a screenplay by Ronald Davidson, and special effects by the Lydecker brothers. This serial recycles the flying sequences from Republic's earlier 1949 serial King of the Rocket Men. It was later released by Republic in 1966 as the 100-minute television film Retik the Moon Menace. The odd naming choice of the serial's main hero, "Commando Cody," was possibly an attempt by Republic to make young audiences think they were seeing another adventure of Commander Corry, the hero of the popular ABC TV and radio series Space Patrol (1950–1955). However, there is no surviving evidence that this was a consideration by anyone at Republic. Plot Commando Cody (George Wallace) is a civilian researcher and inventor with a number of employees. He uses a streamlined helmet and an atomic-powered rocket backpack attached to a leather flying jacket. Cody also uses a rocket ship capable of reaching the Moon. When the U.S. finds itself under attack from a mysterious force that can wipe out entire military bases and industrial complexes, Cody surmises (correctly) that the Earth is coming under attack from our own Moon. He then flies his rocket ship there and confronts the Moon's "ruler", Retik (Roy Barcroft), who boldly announces his plans to both conquer Earth and then move the Moon's entire population here using spaceships and atomic weapons. Their weapons use a power superior to uranium which they call lunarium. During the next 11 serial chapters, Cody, now back on Earth, and his associates Joan (Aline Towne), Ted (William Bakewell) and Dick (Gayle Kellogg) battle an elusive lunar agent named Krog (Peter Brocco) and his gang of human henchmen led by Graber (Clayton Moore) and Daly (Bob Stevenson), who use lunarium-powered ray cannons to disrupt defense forces and weaken public morale. After a second trip to the Moon, in which he captures a sample ray cannon for duplication in his lab, Cody tracks Retik's minions to their hideout where Krog is killed by one of his own devices, and Graber and Daly subsequently die in an over-the-cliff car chase. Retik flies to Earth to take personal charge of his collapsing operations but is blasted out of the sky by one of his own ray weapons. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dwight-allen/message

Special - Calling Alpha Control: PAUL LUBLINER & MIKE CLARK EPISODE SYNOPSIS: We welcome BACK our old friend & LIS Super Aficionado Mr. Mike Clark & he’s accompanied today by his friend & colleague Mr. Paul Lubliner to Alpha Control for an exclusive interview. Both Mike & Paul have been life-long fans of the Fantasy Worlds that Irwin Allen created on his 1960’s TV series. Today they are well known to the LIS fan community for collaborating on the fantastic documentary film, ‘RESTORING THE GEMINI 12’. The film which Mr. Clark produced in 2016 has over 400,000 views on YouTube & it chronicles Paul’s amazing work restoring to original condition, the 50 year-old 4 foot filming miniature of the Robinson’s Spacecraft that was used to produce special effects shots for the unaired pilot ‘No Place to Hide’. After LIS was picked up by CBS in 1965, much of that SFX footage would be recycled in several episodes of LIS & the Gemini 12 would be re-designated as the Jupiter 2. Recently, Paul & Mike have teamed up again for a new documentary film that takes the story of the Gemini 12 Model to a whole other level-literally! That film titled ‘RELAUNCHING THE GEMINI 12’, is being released on YouTube in 3 parts over a few weeks in August of 2020 & it documents their effort to recreate one of the most iconic special effect sequences ever seen on LIS using virtually the same technics that were used to produce the original shots! The film is a story of challenges, setbacks & unrelenting determination to do what at times seemed an almost impossible task & it’s created using the same high-quality production values that made their 1st documentary a treat to watch. MIKE'S BIO: Mike Clark has had a long career in television on the camera & production side of things. He also had a 15-year career as a feature writer for the classic Sci-Fi Film/TV magazine STARLOG. During his career he’s had the opportunity to interview most of the original cast members & some of the behind the scenes creators of LIS, including Irwin Allen himself. As a result, he’s become something of a recognized expert on the classic series. So much so that, Mike was featured as the main facilitator of the Cast Commentaries ‘Special features’ that are included on the incredible LIS: The Complete Adventures Blu-Ray set. Today Mike resides in Southern California running his own video production company Clark Media Productions. PAULS' BIO: Paul Lubliner is the CEO of Highliners, producer of highly detailed scale model train kits & parts, which he founded over 30 years ago in San Diego. The company is renowned by model railroad enthusiasts world-wide for their quality & scale accuracy. Paul has used his expertise as a master model maker & skilled fabricator of miniature parts for model trains to pursue another passion; restoring classic Irwin Allen film miniatures including the original 4' Seaview model, the 2 wood patterns for the Flying Sub and of course, the original Gemini 12 miniature. Paul also created the screen-accurate 8-foot Seaview model replica used in Kevin Burns’ TV-documentary ‘THE FANTASY WORLDS of IRWIN ALLEN’. For the new 3-part documentary series, RELAUNCHING THE GEMINI 12, Paul constructed a duplicate 1:1 scale Gemini 12 replica; complete with spinning radar, fusion core & Lydecker tubes for inserting guidewires, just like the original model used by LB Abbott’s Fox special effects crew in 1965. We’ll talk more with our guests about that replica & what it was used for, as well as lot of other fascinating details about their new film project. You’re in for a real treat for the ears, so sit back relax and enjoy this wide-ranging conversation with Paul Lubliner & Mike Clark. PODCAST INFO: This interview was conducted on 29 MAY 2020. In the season 1 finale, Max, Zach and two other X-5s team with Lydecker as the struggle for power at Manticore comes to a head. We finally get the scene we've been waiting for, but just as quickly it's ripped away, and the episode concludes with Max at Manticore and Logan on the Space Needle.
In an episode that juxtaposes humor related to Max's heat cycle and her desire to finally be with Logan with the impending Manticore civil war, Max and the other X-5s may surprisingly have a reason to team with Lydecker. Though Max, Logan and Zach put their lives in jeopardy to save Tinga, we're left in the dark about the success of the mission.
The X-5s are on the run again, but this time we learn that not only does Tinga have a son, it turns out he's exceptional. Of course, once Lydecker and Madame X learn that Case exists, they both want to get their hands on the mother yet surprisingly not the boy.
Logan regresses both physically and emotionally, and Zach's reappearance only complicates the situation between Logan and Max. Lydecker reappears to set a trap to bring the X-5's out into the open, but once again he underestimates his kids. Kendra moves out, and Original Cindy moves in, but neither Max nor Logan seems willing to make the first move in a relationship we've watched developing for some time.
Logan and Max protect a government witness ready to testify against the mayor and his corrupt administration, but when the witness turns out to be Bruno, things don't turn out quite the way the parties expect. It also turns out that the Manticore kids aren't the only super soldiers in town, and Max and the others have more than Lydecker to worry about.
Lydecker steps up the pressure on Max by offering a $50,000 reward, and it takes Logan and Zach working together to extricate her from his pincers. Shippers certainly receive something to talk about in this episode, but it's the dream sequence that leaves most viewers scratching their heads as they attempt to make sense of what they've just seen. Marvel Phase 3: Read it here.
We learn that Max's seizures aren't the only issues facing the kids from X-5 group at Manticore. Brin, one of the 12 that escaped ten years ago, calls Zach because she's afraid Lydecker's on to her, but her physical problems may be even worse. Like the viewers, Zach's curious about the relationship between Max and Logan. USPS Batman stamps
