Beyond The Outer Realm welcomes special Guest, Luke Eastwood Host: Michelle Desrochers Date: April 8th, 2025 Episode: 546 Discussion : Luke will be discussing his new book " Scotia: The Lost Sister of Tutankhamun" From Luke's Press Release: - This is the latest book from author, folklorist and amateur historian Luke Eastwood, who has previously had success with titles such as “Kerry Folk Tales”, “Dingle Folk Tales” and “The Druid's Primer”. It also features an introduction from best-selling UK author and acclaimed archaeologist Lorraine Evans. A nation under threat and a dynasty facing collapse under a much hated, heretic king. Tracing the Amarna Egyptian royal family, from Akhenaten through to Tutankhamun and the final Pharaoh Horemheb, a picture emerges of a dynasty caught up in a religious controversy and the unfolding of an unstoppable drama. This book explores the mysterious deaths of this dynasty's pharaohs and the flight of one of its last queens, an older sister of the ill-fated Tutankhamun. Why did she flee Egypt and how? Why did she go to Spain and then Scotland? How did she come to meet her death in the West of Ireland? Thank you all !!! About Luke: I have been involved in the arts in some shape or form since I was a teenager. I was born in Aberdeen, Scotland but spent most of my childhood and all my teenage years in Kent and Surrey, England. At 19 I moved to London to study at university and this was the beginning of my development into a semi-professional or professional artist, designer, musician, photographer and writer. In 1990, at university, I discovered the Apple MacIntosh computer which I immediately fell in love with, leading to my interest in digital art and Graphic Design (which became my career), following a stint in Mitre House Publishing for my degree industrial placement and writing for the university magazine Cityscape. I began writing poetry at the age of 15, pretty badly I might add. Over time I developed my own style of both poetry and prose. My first article was published in 1991 but a year after leaving university I left journalism aside for other activities (mainly music) until the early 2000s when I began to write more frequently. For most of the 1990s I concentrated on my band Children Of Dub and released several albums and singles during that time. A multitude of my articles in magazines and websites have been appearing in recent years, which you can find on my articles page. In 2005 my first book, on spiritual wisdom, "The Journey" was published under the pseudonym Joseph Dawton. In 2006 I was editor of a collection of poetry entitled "Where The Hazel Falls", featuring some of my poems, as well as eight other authors in Ireland.
It's 1984, and Apple Computers and its founder are on top of the world. Not only has Steve Jobs created one of the most remarkable machines of the 20th century, but he's also launched it in a way that will cause a ripple effect through society to be felt for years to come. And less than a year later, it would all come crashing down. Steve Jobs was a groundbreaking visionary, but he wasn't always the easiest to work for. As 1984 came to a close, something big was about to happen at Apple Computers... This is a look back at not just the creation and growth of Apple Computers, but the remarkable moment in the mid-80s, when its founder was forced out of the company he helped create... The Classic Mac OS refers to the operating system that Apple Macintosh computers ran from 1984 to 2001. While it was one of the first popular operating systems to feature a graphical user interface, it hit some very real growing pains by the 1990s. In this episode, prolific hacker of the classic Mac OS, Elliot Nunn, joins us to dive into some of the quirks of this landmark operating system. We discuss some of its unique traits, how it compares to a modern operating system, and some of Elliot's projects to reverse-engineer it. By the end of the episode you'll have a much stronger understanding of how the Classic Mac OS (System 1 through Mac OS 9) worked. Episode 161 Chapter 22, Electronic Music in Canada. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Let's get started with the listening guide to Chapter 22, Electronic Music in Canada from my book Electronic and Experimental music. Playlist: ELECTRONIC MUSIC IN CANADA Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:34 00:00 1. Hugh LeCaine, “Dripsody: An Etude For Variable Speed Recorder” (1955). One of the earliest pieces of tape music by the inventor and composer Hugh Le Caine. Also, one of the most available works from the early years when it was used to demonstrate simple techniques of tape composition. It is probably the most-played work of electronic music other than “Poeme Electronique” by Varese. Every sound in this work is based on a recording of a single drop of water falling into a bucket, which then underwent various speed adjustments and edits to create this composition. 2:12 01:38 2. Hugh LeCaine, “Ninety-Nine Generators” (1956). The title refers to the 99 tones of the touch sensitive organ. Each note had a separate generator and they could all sounds at the same time. 1:42 03:40 3. Hugh LeCaine, “This Thing Called Key” (1956). Le Caine composed on his Special Purpose Tape Recorder using individual tape playback heads for six tapes, activated by keys. 1:53 05:22 4. Among the pioneering academic electronic music composers, she worked independently in the Electronic Music Studio of the University of Toronto. 15:59 16:04 6. Paul Pedersen, “For Margaret, Motherhood And Mendelssohn” (1971). Composed at McGill University where Pedersen was director of the electronic music studio. The electroacoustic work uses fragments of speeches such as prime minister Pierre Trudeau's and the electronic sounds were composed using Le Caine's Polyphonic Synthesizer. 4:21 32:02 7. Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux, “Zones” (1972). Musique électroacoustique réalisée au Sonic Research Studio, Université Simon Fraser, Vancouver. An exploration of different instrumental timbres using electroacoustic music. 9:02 36:22 8. Alcides Lanza, “Eidesis IV For Wind Ensemble And Electronic Sounds” (1977). Episode 121 Crosscurrents in Early Electronic Music of Canada, Part 2 Playlist Track Time Start Time Introduction –Thom Holmes 04:32 00:00 1. John Mills-Cockell, “On The Heath” from A Third Testament (1974 True North). John Mills-Cockell is a Canadian composer from Toronto who was a very early adopter of the original Moog Synthesizer. He was part of the multi-faceted and ground-breaking work with the avant garde/poetry group Intersystems in the late 1960s and then the group Syrinx. I became acquainted with John more recently and he told me that his original Moog modules, used for Intersystems, burned up in a fire and so he turned to the use of ARP instruments around 1971. I am featuring his synthesizer work from a couple of solo albums as a representative of the independent stream of electronic music artists from Canada. John has continued to produce works for and for his numerous works for radio, television, film, ballet, and stage, and he is still active. 02:30 04:32 2. John Mills-Cockell, “North African Gladiator” from A Third Testament (1974 True North). Produced, played, engineered, organ and synthesizer, John Mills Cockell. 04:08 07:00 3. John Mills-Cockell, “Collision” from Gateway (1977 Anubis Records ). Produced, played, engineered, organ and synthesizer, John Mills Cockell. 03:32 11:03 4. Alcides Lanza, “Eidesis IV For Wind Ensemble And Electronic Sounds” (1977) from McGill Wind Ensemble (1980 McGill University Records). This collection of contemporary Canadian works was released by McGill University's own label. This track is the only work with electronic sounds on the album, by Argentinean-born composer Lanza. Lanza studied music in Buena Aires, moved to Canada in 1971, and became Director of the Electronic Music Studio of McGill University in 1976. 11:20 14:34 5. Dennis Patrick, “Phantasy III (Excerpt)” (1977-78) from Dennis Patrick--Musical Portrait (1982 CAPAC). Another one of the 7” vinyl Musical Portrait series of Canadian artists, released by the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada, Limited (CAPAC). Completed in the Electronic Music Studio of the University of Toronto, where he was Director of the studio beginning around 1976. 04:53 25:48 6. Barry Truax, “Arras” (1980) from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). Truax represented the left coast of Canada, and worked with R. Murray Schafer beginning in 1973 on the World Soundscape Project. Several of the composers in this episode came from that same environment, mixing natural acoustic sounds with electroacoustic treatments. This work was made using four computer synthesized tracks. Truax became known for his computer compositions as well as soundscapes. 10:08 30:38 7. Canadian Electronic Ensemble, “Chaconne À Son Goût” from Canadian Electronic Ensemble (1981 Centrediscs). Performers, David Grimes, David Jaeger, James Montgomery, Larry Lake. Composed by David Grimes. The ensemble was founded in Toronto in 1971 by David Grimes, David Jaeger, Jim Montgomery and Larry Lake, "to promote the live performance of electronic music and thereby the composition of new repertoire for this medium." This is another nice example of music by independent artists working in Canada. 17:21 40:34 8. Dennis Patrick, “Metasuite” (1982) from Dennis Patrick--Musical Portrait (1982 CAPAC). Another one of the 7” vinyl Musical Portrait series of Canadian artists, released by the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada, Limited (CAPAC). Completed in the Electronic Music Studio of the University of Toronto, where he was Director of the studio beginning around 1976. 07:55 57:54 9. David Keane, “Aurora” (1985) from Aurora (1985 Cambridge Street Records). A work from a fellow author, David Keane who wrote a book called Tape Music Composition in 1981 (Oxford University Press). He was born in America but became a Canadian citizen in 1974. At the time of “Aurora” Keane was a professor of music theory and director of the electronic music studio at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, which I think he founded in 1970. The music was created to be played during a dance performance in which movement was seen through colored images projected on the dancers. The work was realized in the Queen's University Electroacoustic Music Facility. 10:17 1:05:48 10. Claude Schryer, “A Kindred Spirit” (1985) from Group Of The Electronic Music Studio - McGill University (1986 McGill University Records). Bass Clarinet, Yves Adam; Cello, Andras Weber; Composed and conducted by, Claude Schryer; Flute, Jill Rothberg; Guitar Daniel Desjardins; Percussion, Helen Barclay; Piano, Laurie Radford. Recorded at McGill University Recording Studios. This work is notable for its use of the Synclavier, a high-end digital synthesizer/sampler/workstation from the mid-1980s. 16:02 1:16:04 11. Bruno Degazio, “Heatnoise” (1987) from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). Degazio is a composer, researcher and film sound designer based in Ontario, Canada. “Heatnoise is one of a series of algorithmic compositions applying principles of fractal geometry to music.” It uses digital synthesis. 11:24 1:32:04 12. Hildegard Westerkamp, “Cricket Voice” (1987) from from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). A super accomplished sound ecologist, Westerhamp is best known today as the creator of many works of sound art that use natural acoustic environments. She also composed many tape works. This work is a “musical exploration of the cricket,” with a cricket sound recorded in Mexico. If you know crickets, you will note that this one is not Canadian. But the composer is and this work was produced at the Simon Fraser University in Vancouver where Westerkamp was teaching at the time. 11:09 1:43:18 13. Ann Southam, “Fluke Sound” (1989) from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). Southam is another female Canadian composer of note. Much of her career has been spent composing works for dance. She is from the Toronto area. This work is from a period when she was immersed in electroacoustic music. 10:22 1:54:13 14. Norma Beecroft, “Evocations: Images Of Canada (1992) (2003 Ovation Volume 3). In contrast to the earlier tape works of Beecroft featured in part 1 of this series, this is a purely digital composition. She used an Apple Macintosh, the program/sequencer Performer and a Roland D-70 synthesizer. Commissioned by the Music Department in Toronto of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. with the purpose of utilizing their then new digital mixing facilities. The materials for this composition represent the many aspects of Canadian culture and was a statement around her concern for the “future of Canada as a unfied country.” 16:01 2:04:22 Opening background music: David Keane, “Lumina” (1988) from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). 1984 was a pivotal year in pop culture—it gave us the LA Olympics, Purple Rain, and Apple Macintosh. But it was also an incredible time for movies, giving us fan-favorite classics that still hold up today, such as Gremlins, Karate Kid, Star Trek 3, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and more! 1984 was the true Revenge of the Nerds at the Box Office.
1984 was the year that saw the introduction of the Apple Macintosh, the launch of the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference, and the year the world learned of the terrifyingly destructive potential of A.I. courtesy of Skynet and The Terminator. 1984 is more than just the title of George Orwell's cautionary, dystopian novel or Van Halen's wildly successful 6th album. 1984 is the year that heavy metal began to intensify exponentially, including the continued evolution of thrash and black metal, as well as the release of “the ultimate anthem” that resulted in one of the greatest music videos in heavy metal history. Surprise! We've got a double episode for you this week, all thanks to making a decision to flow downstream. In this one, we remember the release of the Apple MacIntosh as well as that time Steve Jobs screwed Steve Wozniak out of a bonus for creating the Atari 2600 classic Breakout. We also dabble in "Just Say No," reminiscing about First Lady Nancy Reagan's battle cry, her appearance on Diff'rent Stokes (as well as the Diff'rent Stokes curse), and the pop culture celebrities and athletes who tried to keep us off drugs while getting high themselves. Plus, we expose head Keebler Elf, E.L. Keebler, who simultaneously urged us to "just say no" while profiting enormously off teenagers with the munchies. All this and a full box of Cheez-Its, a package of Fudge Stripes, and half a package of Vienna Fingers as we watch the King of Late Night, David Letterman, with none other than Tone Loc.
Apple, the world's second most valuable company, marks the 40th anniversary of the Apple Macintosh while introducing their new "Spacial Computer."

In this episode, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece - rather surprisingly - discuss various topics related to accessible technology. They start by celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Apple Macintosh, reminiscing about their experiences with early Mac computers and discussing the evolution of Mac accessibility features, including the introduction of VoiceOver in 2005. The conversation then shifts to Google's introduction of new generative AI features in Chrome for Mac and Windows Cs, aiming to provide a more streamlined and personalized browsing experience. Although Steven and Shaun find some of the features, like tab organization and AI-powered custom themes, less relevant to their needs, they acknowledge the potential benefits for users who are partially sighted and the usefulness of AI writing assistance. The main focus of the episode is on driverless cars, with special guest Gregg Hayes sharing his experience using Uber's autonomous vehicle service in Phoenix, Arizona. Greg compares his ride with Uber to his previous experiences with Waymo, noting differences in the ease of finding the car and the level of interaction provided during the trip. Despite some challenges, Greg expresses his confidence and trust in the safety of driverless cars, highlighting the advantages of not having to interact with a human driver. The Reality Distortion Field. Guy "Bud" Tribble was Vice President of Software Technology at Apple Inc. As Apple was developing the first Macintosh computer in 1981, Bud used the term to describe Apple's founder Steve Jobs. The term seems to have originated in a 1966 episode of Star Trek when it was used to describe how the aliens encountered by the crew of the starship Enterprise created their own new world through mental force. It seems the great thinkers who are doers, like Steve Jobs, embrace (and enjoy) living in the reality distortion field of their own making. That is, they see things the rest of us don't. Vivid imagination coupled with obsession drive produces the likes of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. Is it distortion though? It is when compared to the current state. Coupling the term "reality" to it makes it seem as though it's delusion. Something that's inaccurate, or unreal. Not true to the reality. Like a photograph that's distorted. Or the lenses in a pair of mis-prescribed glasses. The achievements of self-driven maniacs to build great things, or to solve complex problems don't seem to the result of delusion though. Rather, they seem to be imagined by people capable of seeing what the rest of us can't. Yet. “No great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness.” ― Aristotle The madness is subjective. What appears as madness to one feels ordinary to another. “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” ― George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman I think that term better conveys the truth, unreasonable. It's less of a reality distortion field and more of an unreasonable - or beyond current reasoning - view of what is possible. It's a reality bending field where the unreasonable man adapts or bends the current reality into a new, improved future reality. Then continues to do it over and over again. Apple is introducing the iPhone 15. I'm currently producing today's show on a 2023 Apple MacBook Pro. Nevermind that just this week Apple introduced some brand new MacBook Pro models. In 1984 I purchased the first Apple Macintosh computer. That was then. This is now. Not even Steve Jobs, in 2011 at the time of his death, could have imagined the current technology. Had he lived, he most certainly would have figured it out though - and who knows what bigger, better products may have emerged under the Apple brand name? Steve Jobs died 12 years ago (October 5, 2011). Who knows what he may have imagined? Or what things he may have seen as persisted in trying to bend the present technology to fit his vision? It's what unreasonable men do. Mostly, unreasonable people find a way, not an excuse. We embrace different degrees and characteristics of unreasonableness as we navigate the various chapters of our life. “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” ― T.S. Eliot How unreasonable are you? And in what ways - or about what things - are you unreasonable? Are they positive or destructive? Some of the titans of innovation have been so focused on what they see and what they want that others around them pay a high price. Sometimes, it's a price willingly paid. For example there are stories of high level employees of Apple and other high-performing companies where they burned out due to the intensity, pressure and elevated expectations. Opting for employment elsewhere, some experience boredom though because the pace is slower, the expectations lower and the strain much less difficult. In the absence of those things that burned them out they realized there was a void in their daily joy so they returned back to the company from which they resigned. Is that unreasonableness positive or destructive? Maybe both. There are other stories of these mono-maniacs on a mission (Tom Peters coined that phrase in "In Search of Excellence") who...
All aboard, we're off to the 2023 Apple Festival at the University of British Columbia, to taste some apples and, most importantly, enjoy some apple names. And before that, we return to the classic Sporklusionist applesode to refresh our memory about how apple names are chosen - eponyms, portmanteaus, geography, or corporate R&D, just like how our ancestors named apples. Dan Pashman hosts The Sporkful podcast - head to the Sporkful podfeed or sporkful.com to listen to the companion episode where we learn about how new varietals of apples are made. Kate Evans, Kathryn Grandy and Joanna Crosby explain the history of apple names and the current process for coining new ones. My companions at the apple festival are Hannah McGregor of Material Girls podcast, and Martin Austwick of Neutrino Watch and Song By Song podcasts. Infos zum Spiel: Thema: Déjà Vu: A Nightmare Comes True!! Get to Aha!: Discover Your Positioning DNA and Dominate Your Competition by Andy Cunningham About the Book: From the marketing strategist who helped Steve Jobs launch the original Apple Macintosh comes a groundbreaking guide to positioning any company for industry dominance Andy Cunningham has been at the forefront of tech and innovation since day one, and she's been helping companies create new product categories ever since. Now she reveals the winning framework she uses to transform markets and industries. Get to Aha! shows how to establish the kind of foundation world-class brands are built on. Too many business leaders fail to ask the most basic questions about their company―Who are we? And why do we matter?―before they leap right into branding. Big mistake. A company must first know itself (establish its position) before it can express its identity (execute its branding). There are three types of companies in the world, each with its own DNA: Mothers are customer-oriented, Mechanics are product-oriented, and Missionaries are concept-oriented―and it's absolutely critical for business leaders to know which type their company is to create an authentic and ultimately “sticky” position in the market. A company's DNA is the key to achieving this and with it, a competitive advantage. Why? Because if a Mechanic creates a marketing campaign based on its belief that it is a Missionary, the underlying positioning will not ring true and the company won't gain a foothold in the market. But if a company positions itself in alignment with its DNA, it will resonate authentically and establish its role and relevance even in the face of a major competitor. Get to Aha! presents a clear step-by-step framework that will help you determine your company's precise position in the marketing landscape, using Andy's DNA-based methodology. It takes you through the process of performing “genetic testing” on your company, examining the market through the six Cs of positioning, and developing your positioning statement―a rational, factual statement about your company's role and relevance. Then and only then can you create a branding and marketing strategy that will build market momentum and crush the competition. Trust Andy. Steve Jobs did. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia LILO (Linux Loader) is a boot loader for Linux and was the default boot loader for most Linux distributions in the years after the popularity of loadlin. Today, many distributions use GRUB as the default boot loader, but LILO and its variant ELILO are still in wide use. Further development of LILO was discontinued in December 2015 along with a request by Joachim Wiedorn for potential developers. For EFI-based PC hardware the now orphaned ELILO boot loader was developed, originally by Hewlett-Packard for IA-64 systems, but later also for standard i386 and amd64 hardware with EFI support. On any version of Linux running on Intel-based Apple Macintosh hardware, ELILO is one of the available bootloaders. It supports network booting using TFTP/DHCP. https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FLILO_%28bootloader%29%23elilo hpr3798 slackware.com https://sourceforge.net/projects/elilo/files/elilo/ elilo.config: prompt delay=20 timeout=20 default=g #default=h chooser=simple message=textmenu-message.msg image=vmlinuz-generic label=g initrd=initrd.gz read-only append="root=/dev/nvme0n1p5 resume=/dev/nvme0n1p6" image=vmlinuz-huge label=h read-only append="root=/dev/nvme0n1p5 resume=/dev/nvme0n1p6" image=dummy label=w slackware; reading is not an option Ken: added aditional links and wikipedia summary
