Do you often beat yourself up when things don’t go according to plan? You didn’t meet the deadline at work, you didn’t lose the ten pounds you wanted to shed before your class reunion, or maybe you were impatient with your partner? Instead of berating yourself, forgiving yourself may be a better, more constructive way to go. WHYY’s Maiken Scott and psychologist Dan Gottlieb discuss what that looks like in one of their conversations.
In this episode, Ryan Saley welcomes back Dan Gottlieb, VP of Sales Tech and Gen AI expert at Gartner, for a deep dive into the evolving landscape of sales technology, particularly focusing on generative AI. Dan highlights the pressing need for tools that simplify administrative tasks, allowing sales teams to focus more on selling. Explore becoming Superhuman here: https://superhumanrevenue.beehiiv.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a distinction between general-purpose technologies like large language models (e.g., ChatGPT) and niche-specific sales tools. While general-purpose tools require more effort to extract value, specific tools are designed to integrate seamlessly into sales workflows, making them more user-friendly and effective for sales reps. Sales professionals should familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of large language models. This knowledge will enhance their ability to leverage similar technologies that are tailored to their specific sales needs shortly. For sales leaders, the emphasis should be on using case-specific technologies that provide insights into deals and help communicate progress effectively. There is a significant opportunity for sales leadership to utilize technology for talent development. By providing managers with data-driven suggestions for coaching individual sales reps, organizations can enhance the overall performance of their teams. A major unmet need in sales teams is the reduction of time spent on non-selling activities. By focusing on automating administrative tasks and improving knowledge management. BEST MOMENTS "I think there's more limited upside in the general purpose technologies because of how much effort a sales rep has to put into learning how to use the technology today." "The value prop of this technology right now is time savings, a little bit of conversion benefit, but mainly time savings." "I think a lot of folks are jumping over [administrative tasks] because they want to think about AI for conversion, conversion, conversion." "How do you grow like a VC-backed company without taking on investors? Do you want to create a lifestyle business, a performance business, or an empire?" "I see some cool software that's focusing on this problem, trying to give managers in natural language suggestions for ways to help individual reps get better at their jobs." In this episode, Ryan Staley welcomes Dan Gottlieb, VP of Sales Tech and Gen AI expert at Gartner, to discuss the current chaos and future trends in the sales tech landscape. Dan shares insights from his extensive experience, including the evolution of sales technologies and the impact of generative AI on the market. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the underlying technologies and methodologies to leverage AI in sales processes effectively. The conversation delves into "technology as a teammate," exploring how sales professionals can collaborate with AI agents to enhance their workflows and decision-making. Join 2,500+ readers getting weekly practical guidance to scale themselves and their companies using Artificial Intelligence and Revenue Cheat Codes. Explore becoming Superhuman here: https://superhumanrevenue.beehiiv.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS The sales tech market is currently experiencing significant disruption, with various categories of sales technologies converging to meet investor growth expectations. This has led to a state of "mayhem" where distinguishing between different products and their capabilities has become increasingly challenging. The introduction of generative AI has dramatically transformed the sales tech landscape, prompting companies to rethink how they position their products and the value they offer. Organizations need to shift from a vendor-first perspective to a more informed approach focusing on understanding how technologies work. This includes grasping concepts like Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to ask better questions and make informed decisions about technology investments. Instead of solely focusing on metrics like expanding the pipeline, companies should thoroughly audit their processes at a granular level. Identifying specific workflows and pain points will help determine where AI can add the most value. The future of sales technology involves viewing AI not just as a tool but as a collaborative teammate. Sales representatives will increasingly work alongside AI agents to enhance their decision-making and execution capabilities. BEST MOMENTS "The state of the market in one word, I would call it mayhem." "A lot of companies right now are very much stuck in a vendor first point of view, where they're learning about what sales tech companies are providing." "How do you grow like a VC-backed company without taking on investors?" "AI is capable of handling tasks at a far more granular level." "I believe that that is really where it's going to be: an individual contributor seller is going to have a team of agents that they're managing." A targeted psychotherapy approach shows promising results in treating chronic back pain, and potentially other forms of chronic pain. The approach was studied at the University of Colorado, Boulder. “For a long time, we have thought that chronic pain is due primarily to problems in the body, and most treatments to date have targeted that,” said lead author Yoni Ashar, who conducted the study. “This treatment is based on the premise that the brain can generate pain in the absence of injury or after an injury has healed, and that people can unlearn that pain. Sales Development is one of the biggest trends in sales and it is here to stay. To win at sales development you need to master five plays according to Dan Gottlieb from TOPO. Those plays are developing a repeatable and prescriptive live call framework, focus SDRs on multi-threading within target accounts, design SDR onboarding activities for their role, leverage sales engagement filters for time management, and try an offer that is 100% valuable to the prospect.
If you're 30 years old, you grew up using AOL Instant Messenger to build relationships. They are the people making business decisions today. On this episode of the The Sales Engagement Podcast, I talk with Dan Gottlieb about why chat is so revolutionary now and why it's changing sales. Dan is an Analyst at Topo, a research and advisory firm that helps companies adopt the patterns and plays to achieve drive revenue and grow faster. Lead Forms are not immediate, they're not interactive, and they don't necessarily connect you to the right person right away. But Chat might have big potential in the near future to effect more than just the early stage of inbound. Dan breaks down the reasons Chat has tremendous potential for your business and answers some of the objections to why companies don't invest in it.
We’re two weeks into January, into 2019 – how are you doing, keeping up with your New Year’s resolutions? In his weekly conversation with Maiken Scott, psychologist Dan Gottlieb says even if you’re already off your diet and sleeping instead of going to the gym – it’s fine!
Americans are deeply divided on so many issues these days; gun control, climate change, and immigration, just to name a few. But in his new book, Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska argues that it’s not politics that’s dividing Americans and making them angry and even violent toward each other, it’s loneliness. The book is called “Them: Why We Hate Each Other–and How to Heal.” In their weekly conversation, WHYY’s Maiken Scott and psychologist Dan Gottlieb discuss his premise.
@Dan Gottlieb is a Sales Development Analyst with @TOPO, where he consults with Sales Development programs at some of the highest growth companies in technology and beyond. He brings a viewpoint few of us can gain: a higher level view of what works and what doesn’t in Sales Development today based on working with many companies across industries. It’s easy to get so heads-down on our own Sales Development programs, we can lose focus on the big picture and the high level view of what other companies are doing to succeed. Dan Gottlieb is a practicing psychologist and therapist with more than 40 years of experience. Best known as the host of "Voices in the Family," a weekly radio program heard for more than 30 years on WHYY-FM, Philadelphia’s NPR affiliate. Dan recently retired from the weekly radio program, and now produces and hosts six specials each year. Our focus this episode is on the often overlooked interior life of those affected with disabilities. We interview Dr. Dan Gottlieb, renowned professional psychologist, author of nationally praised books, and regular contributor to Philadelphia's NPR station. Kyle first met our guest when Dr. Gottlieb was the keynote speaker at a national conference about FA. Dr. Gottlieb spoke so profoundly and so deeply that we were excited to bring him on as a guest, so that he could share his story and his insights with our community of listeners. In 1979, he left his wife and two young daughters at home to secretly buy an anniversary gift for his wife. On the highway, a loose tire from an 18-wheeler smashed his car. The resulting wreck ended up sending him to the hospital with a broken neck and into a life of disability. Totally paralyzed below his clavicle, Dr. Gottlieb shares with us his honest and personal thoughts at the time - that he didn’t want to live; that he thought his existence would only be a burden on his friends and family. This way of thinking is incredibly depressing and defeating - but not unfamiliar for many people facing such devastating circumstances. He shares with us how he was able to triumph over this mindset - how one of the most refreshing realizations for him was that he, even with all of the tasks he was unable to do with his newly impaired body, was still able to provide value to others. In his case, this reality hit him while he was still in the hospital - a nurse needed someone to listen to her. Dr. Gottlieb realized that even he as a quadriplegic man could still do that. Related to that idea of remaining focused on what you can still do for others is the second realization Dr. Gottlieb found - that focusing less on himself and his own problems or complaints and more on his surroundings (whether that’s other people, or simply physical surroundings like a room’s architecture) was freeing. It enabled him to leap beyond the threats of depression and hopelessness, and discover purpose and beauty in life, even life with a disability. Take-aways from this episode: Be more aware of others. Be the person who holds the Umbrella We thank Dr. Dan Gottlieb for joining us today and sharing his insights. Nationally known author, psychologist, and radio show host Dr. Dan Gottlieb is the guest on the May 31, 2016 edition of Boomer Generation Radio, to discuss the broad topic of love. Dan Gottlieb began his practice in 1969 after receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees at Temple University. As a young psychologist, his early career specialized in addictions where he ultimately was the director of a community based treatment program at Belmont Institute in Philadelphia. At the time he was director of two outpatient clinics and one inpatient unit supervising over 30 staff. He was also a graduate of the highly respected Family Institute of Philadelphia, a program that later elected him as president. img_about_dan720x400During this time he became a highly respected clinician, teacher and supervisor of psychiatrists, psychologists and clinical social workers. He taught at Hahnemann University and consulted with many other faculty members throughout the region. Personally, he was happily married and had loved being a father to his young daughters. However, his early successes were tragically interrupted. In 1979 Dan was in a near fatal automobile accident which left him paralyzed from the chest down. As expected, there were years of despair and depression. He experienced loss on top of loss as his wife left the marriage and passed away several years later. And in the ensuing years he mourned the loss of his sister and his parents. And for the last three decades, he has been observing life with passion and discussion and learning valuable lessons about what it means to be human and how adversity can teach us how to live better and love better. Despite this adversity, he resumed his private practice which was to grow substantially over the next several decades. In addition to his practice, he has continued to lecture, train and supervise a variety of healthcare professionals. Since 1985, Daniel Gottlieb has been hosting “Voices in the Family,” an award-winning mental health call-in radio show aired on WHYY 90.9 FM, Philadelphia's local public radio station. From 1993 until 2008, he wrote a highly regarded column for the Philadelphia Inquirer titled: “Inside Out,” reflecting his perspective on the intersection of the events in our world and the events in our minds and hearts. He has also published four books, including the international bestseller: Letters to Sam: A Grandfather's Lessons on Love, Loss, and the Gifts of Life. His newest book, The Wisdom We're Born With: Restoring Faith in Ourselves, was released in March, to rave reviews from mental health professionals around the country. All of his royalties will be donated to the Khulani school for disabled children in South Africa. In addition to his writing and radio show, he delivered over 1000 lectures all over the world on a variety of topics affecting the well-being of people, families and the larger community. The essence of his philosophy can be found on his business card. After his name there are no degrees and no fancy titles. His card simply says “Gottlieb. Human.” Through personal and professional experience, Dan has learned that our greatest suffering is alienation and loneliness. That is these powerful emotions can produce prejudice, hatred, violence, withdrawal and depression. He has learned that all humans long for human contact, compassion and understanding. And without compassion, our spirits wither. When asked to summarize his life's work, he says simply: “I teach kindness.”

Don't Leave Me This Way was written in the early 1970s by songwriters Huff, Gamble and Gilbert who were the composers behind the famous black American Philadelphia Sound. It was first performed by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, featuring Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals, and later became a hit for Thelma Houston and the Communards. As the title suggests, the song is all about longing, yearning and loss. Remarkable stories in this edition of Soul Music reflect the pain expressed in this soul classic, including one told by Dr Dan Gottlieb, a quadriplegic therapist who befriended Teddy Pendergrass after he became paralysed in a car accident. Sharon Wachsler recalls dancing to the version made famous by The Communards in 1986 before a devastating illness left her housebound and reliant on her beloved service dog Gadget, who gave her a reason to keep going. When he died, the song was the only way she could express her grief over his loss. The Reverend Richard Coles, formerly of The Communards, talks about the significance of Don't Leave Me This Way as a dancefloor anthem for young gay men in the 1980s that was later to become associated with the AIDS epidemic that took so many of their lives. Producer: Maggie Ayre.

But he knows love is often met with fundamentalism or violence. How do we love then? Rev.
