In this 154th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. This week, we discuss the new Newspeak, as promoted by Stanford and its list of very bad words. While recognizing that, in a few rare cases, they have a point, overall this list and its enforcers are batshit crazy. And what it leads to is worse: we discuss title IX compliance officers, the dude who thinks it's fine to hang out in women's spas and other spaces, and the savage woman-hating multiple murderer who is likely to end up in a women's prison. None of this is okay. ***** Our sponsors: Seed: Start a new healthy habit today with Seed probiotics. Mandy's book Unwifeable is brilliant, hysterical and relevant. With lines like, "I tell myself I'm in control because I'm the one doing this to myself" and, "my hero's journey is in transforming and healing myself sexually" to "My resurrection is in revealing my heart" - I put down down the book knowing I had to interview her immediately. Mandy is a genius storyteller. Super smart, funny and willing to share. I included some of our pre recorded conversation at the start of this episode too. An ardent defender of free speech, Stadtmiller's recent article and associated video, "Does Judd Apatow Deserve to be Cancelled?" She describes Apatow as "a symbol of an extremely dangerous and disgustingly hypocritical kind of moral authoritarianism that is currently endangering free speech and comedy." FINALLY! Back from book writing hiatus, Mandy Stadtmiller and Pat Dixon discuss the best show of the year -- with clips! -- HBO's Succession. And get awkward. As always.
Sam sat down with Mandy Stadtmiller, a freelance writer and author of the new memoir Unwifeable, in LA at a time when he was in a deep depression. What came out of this conversation is a beautiful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, laughter at the misery of it all, and hope for more creative work. Mandy’s book (available now!) details her experiences as a young gossip and dating columnist first at the New York Post, and then on to places like New York Magazine and The Daily Beast. Mandy gets honest about everything— getting sober, details of her sex life, and eventually finding a partner. Daily Beast Columnist & Author of new book "Unwifeable" Mandy Stadtmiller & Gleib have a very real and honest conversation about what led to becoming, as she put it, "a crazy, coked up sex addict” and how she turned it around. Why she wrote a gossip and dating column for The New York Post and Xo Jane. She tells us about dating Keith Olberman. Aaron Sorkin, Moby, Marc Maron and Hannibal Buress, (Gleib debuts his impressions of Keith and Hannibal.) The reason the Roseanne reboot is getting insane ratings. The benefits of dirty talk. How she makes it work being married to a Trump supporter. Where she thinks Trump is misunderstood. Why Gleib thinks we’ve lost our core. Tonya Harding on Dancing with the Stars. War Games with South Korea. Kim Jong Un’s charm offensive and new love of K-Pop. The importance of context in reporting. Why it’s important to give slack to comedians. Trump sending our troops to the border. The importance of talking. And the beauty clause in Kim Kardashian’s will.

There are few people in the world who have almost been killed by an ex-lover. Comedian Pat Dixon is one of them and he tells us in spectacular detail about the experience. The talented Mr. Dixon was left with his life and an obsession with crime that he channels into his podcast, New York City Crime Report. He shares stories ripped straight from the New York City headlines and police blotters that are just unbelievable. We also talk about happy stuff as Pat has recently been married to journalist, podcaster Mandy Stadtmiller. Learn how the two met through a story Mandy was researching, how Pat played hard to get and eventually married. They staged their nuptials at the Gotham Comedy Club in November of 2015 and unlike most weddings they actually made money. Of course we talk stand up too! Pat’s slant on comedy is unique and a bit edgy. Fascinating conversation... Enjoy.

What's more salacious than a fallen pickup artist? A fallen pickup artist named Jared Rutledge with an online trail calling women "fuck puppets" and "plates." Mandy Stadtmiller and Pat Dixon debate the ethics of outing a man who secretly wrote about women he was dating without any names and then saw his anonymous online persona exposed and his personal life roundly demonized and condemned by both feminists and members of the Red Pill community.
Once a year, an indeterminate number of feminists, exhibitionsits and horny guys pretending to sympathize with an agenda they don't fully understand march topless from Columbus Circle through Times Square and finally to Bryant Park where they congregate in a topless rally which, in some small measure, is designed to crush the tesiticles of "The Patriarchy." "News Whore" Mandy Stadtmiller agreed to meet up and go to Columbus Circle to walk along, talk to some of the paricipants and see if I could talk her into taking off her shirt. This is what happened.

On today's show we talk to filmmaker Hal Hartley. Since his first feature film, 1988's The Unbelievable Truth, Hal has been creating stylistically singular narratives that are rich in deadpan humor and poetic, measured dialogue. Since then, he has explored this style further with 11 more features and garnered a number of nominations and awards from places like Sundance and Cannes. Hal is also a musician and has created the soundtracks for most of his films.A few weeks ago, Hal welcomed Mark and Andy into his apartment in the shadow of LaGuardia's flight paths to discuss space in comedy, mechanical structures vs. story structure, how directing a film is like running a construction site, and stories of Hartley family mishaps. And in the wrap-up, Andy and and his fiancee share some stories of their own mishaps. Also, check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see us live at the Del Close Marathon on June 29th with DC Pierson and Billy Merritt and live at UCB East on July 2nd with Wyatt Cenac, Mandy Stadtmiller (deputy editor of xoJane), musical guest Xenia Rubinos and a special guest from the world of hip hop!

Records), Jamie Lee (Girl Code, Last Comic Standing), musical guest Brother JT (Thrill Jockey, Drag City), and a special appearance buy the great Talib Kweli. Listen and enjoy!
