This week Caroline pushes Paul to explore Hal Hartley and the original indie queen herself Adrienne Shelly. And they (we) both loved it. Highly recommend the 2 films we discuss as a double feature: The Unbelievable Truth (1989) and Trust (1990) from Hartley's Long Island Triology. We also discuss the documentary Adrienne (2021) about the amazing life and tragic death of Hartley's star.

Best of the Web: the MetaFilter Podcast

I accidentally wrote "make a podcast" on a colander instead of the calendar, so on the downside this episode is pretty late but on the upside it has been thoroughly rinsed. Is that anything? Can we do anything with that? This week we look at the disbelief of Thomas when the disciples told him that they had seen Jesus, and the incredible moment when Jesus appeared to him. What can we learn from this about our own times of doubt, and better yet, what does this passage show us about Jesus' posture towards us even in such times of doubt and disbelief?

With me today I have a comedian, business leader, writer and entrepreneur.  She has held senior management positions at some of the biggest media companies in the world, including 10-years as Senior Vice President at the US studio giant Viacom, where she oversaw a multi-million-dollar budget for brands including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount. While working for Comedy Central, on the road with the late, great Joan Rivers, she was nudged into the sphere of performance. On top of all this she holds a Masters in Neuro Linguistic Programming and has worked for many years, alongside her not inconsiderable day jobs, as a sought-after Executive Coach to the great and the good in industry, public life and politics. Please welcome comedian, writer and businesswoman Cally Beaton.  Bio Cally Beaton is a comedian, writer, speaker and business mentor.  Of the rising stars on the circuit today, few can boast the journey into comedy that Cally Beaton can. Cally is a natural storyteller full of intelligent, distinctive and punchline-rich material and her star is fast on the rise. She has held senior management positions at some of the biggest media companies in the world including MTV, UKTV and Viacom. Early in her career she headed an independent television production company that was bought by ITV’s Carlton Television (where a certain David Cameron was on the board). She left to set up a successful creative consultancy company and went on to do a 10-year stint as Senior Vice President at the US studio giant Viacom. There, Cally oversaw a multi-million-dollar budget for channels including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount; if you want someone to blame for bringing South Park and SpongeBob SquarePants to the world, you need look no further. She has a Masters in Neuro Linguistic Programming and has worked for many years, alongside her not inconsiderable day jobs, as a sought-after Executive Coach to the great and the good in industry, public life and politics. It was while working for Comedy Central, on the road with the late, great Joan Rivers, that Cally was nudged into the sphere of performance. Acting as an unofficial business event warm-up for Ms. Rivers, it was she who told Cally she had what it took to be a stand-up and so, as a 45-year-old single parent, Cally first took to the stage. She quickly cemented her position as one of the most exciting and distinctive new stand-ups in the country, with her unflinching, acerbic and intelligent brand of comedy. She has appeared on BBC2’s QI multiple times and as a guest on Radio 4’s Museum of Curiosity, as well as BBC Radio 6 Music and as a regular contributor on BBC London. In 2019 Cally has appeared as an expert on BBC2’s The Apprentice You’re Fired, as well as a panelist on Radio 4’s The Unbelievable Truth with David Mitchell and BBC’s The Blame Game. Cally also writes for The Guardian. Her first foray to The Edinburgh Fringe in 2016 was a big success. Her show ‘Cat Call’, a double header with Catherine Bohart, received a Malcolm Hardee Award. She then followed up with her debut solo hour in 2017, ‘Super Cally Fragile Lipstick’. The show was a sell-out hit, receiving multiple 4**** reviews, national press coverage and picked as Best of Edinburgh Fringe by The Arts Desk. Cally built on this success with her hit Edinburgh 2019 show – ‘Invisible’ at The Assembly Rooms, which enjoyed numerous accolades and sell-out rooms. After multiple Finalist credits in competitions in the UK and the US, Cally went on to win the prestigious 2018 Piccadilly Comedy Club New Act of the Year competition, after being tipped as one of the comedians to watch for 2017 by Chortle. Drawing on her vast experience, eclectic life and unique wit, she is able to strike the perfect balance of smart, insightful, and entertaining. She is a gifted host and MC, with a natural ability to work a room, and gives sharp, inspirational and thought-provoking keynote and after-dinner speeches. Cally has a hard-won skill set few comedians can boast and has worked with – to name a few – Deutsche Bank, Sony Pictures, IMG, Endemol, Channel 4, Hat Trick, ScreenSkills, Women in Film & Television, UCL. PWC, Aviva, Sky Television, L’Oreal, Lloyds, Wella, Capgemini and Disneyland.  Recorded on: 29th October 2020 Links: More about Cally Beaton More about Maria Franzoni Ltd More about The London Speaker Bureau Connect with Maria on Linkedin Connect with LSB on LinkedIn Connect with Maria on FaceBook To book any of the speakers featured on the Speaking Business podcast, click here Listen here: Libsyn  Itunes  Stitcher Spotify

Richard Coles and Nikki Bedi are joined by Graeme Garden - one third of the Goodies along with Bill Oddie and the late Tim Brooke-Taylor. In the classic BBC television show the trio played agents for hire and would do "anything, anywhere, anytime". Astride their trusty ‘Trandem’ – a three-seater bicycle – they tackled a giant kitten, parodied westerns with a Cornish version called “Bunfight at the OK Tea Rooms” and were chased by a giant Dougal from Magic Roundabout. Graeme also created I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, the long-running Radio 4 show on which he is still a panellist and, with producer Jon Naismith, devised the Unbelievable Truth on Radio 4. Jojo Moyes is a novelist and journalist. Her books include the bestsellers Me Before You, After You and Still Me and The Girl You Left Behind. Me Before You has now sold over 14 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a major film starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke. JoJo’s latest novel, The Giver of Stars, is based on a mobile library service launched by Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930s. The Pack Horse Library Project was an initiative in which female volunteers on horseback delivered paperbacks to families in rural Kentucky who did not have access to books. Giles Clark is a conservationist who is taking on the illegal wildlife trade and helping to build a pioneering new bear sanctuary in Laos, Southeast Asia. He'll be talking about rescuing sun and moon bears and the perils of having bears about the house. And Garry Crothers, who lost an arm in a motorbike accident, joins us to talk about his epic journey - a 4,000 mile solo voyage from the Caribbean to his home in Northern Ireland. Presenter and author Fern Britton chooses her Inheritance Tracks - Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer by Nat King Cole and (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman by Carole King. Plus a listener says thank you to a stranger who helped her at a difficult time. Producer: Paula McGinley Editor: Richard Hooper

A rousing discussion with Boocock's "greatest fan" the Christian Libertarian, Lomax Christiansen, who demands an explanation of the Boocock blindfold iconography. Typically, it dissolves into aggravated verbal assault on Lomax's part and an idealistic expression of ethical restraint in public discourse by Boocock. All of which somehow leads to some flagrant promotion of Hal Hartley's LONG ISLAND TRILOGY box-set Kickstarter campaign. Finally, Boocock presents an excerpt from a 2004 discussion between Hartley, actress and filmmaker Adrienne Shelly, and actor and filmmaker DJ Mendel about the two films Hartley and Shelly made together, The Unbelievable Truth (1989) and Trust (1990). Boocock says: Support Women Filmmakers. The Adrienne Shelly Foundation begun in memory and celebration of our sadly missed friend and colleague, Adrienne Shelly (1966-2006), has for over a decade partnered with some of the finest academic and filmmaking institutions in the country to help provide scholarships, production grants, finishing funds and living stipends. Who knew? Where will it end? How dare they do that! Where to get tickets?  Featured music in this episode: Pete Galub from his latest release, Candy Tears, and a cue from Hartley's Simple Men off True Fiction Pictures.

In our 178th ever Rum Doings, our topic is, isn't it about time we acknowledged the "women in the workplace" experiment should come to an end. We begin with rememberings of our first go on the internet, and then inevitably move on to the Charlie Hebdo story. Nick gives a short lecture on the nature of problematic religions, interrupted by a problematic wife, before we undo the nonsense of the argument that satire must only "punch up". We talk irony and the science of Mornington Crescent, and then John rants about how The Unbelievable Truth is a terrible radio concept. Then we somehow find ourselves dissecting the careers of Whose Line contestants, and ponder the descent of Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy. And we call Mitch Benn names, again.

Thanks for joining us! We've decided to make our podcast for today shorter than it was in its initial release. A few hours have passed, and it's our opinion that the intro on that first version was too long, so we've cut it back and let the content do most of the talking. What's in this show? In this standalone production, we offer you that hep thing called "Liberty 101", where we pit logic, history and our libertarian/voluntarist principles against the rhetoric of a popular Marxist professor named Richard D. Wolff. Gard and Furb extended the conversation beyond what they could offer live on the radio, and added a lot more content, as we defended the individual against the invasions of a guy who would create obfuscating arguments to excuse the use of force and group control over individuals. We hope you like it. During the first seg, just try to concentrate on his silly words. With music by: The Grassy Knoll "Conversations With Julian Dexter" and "Unbelievable Truth", Richard Butler "Alabama Song" (by Brecht), and Daler Mehndii with the Wolfmen "Two Eyes"! visit us at www.libertyconspiracy.com

On today's show we talk to filmmaker Hal Hartley. Since his first feature film, 1988's The Unbelievable Truth, Hal has been creating stylistically singular narratives that are rich in deadpan humor and poetic, measured dialogue. Since then, he has explored this style further with 11 more features and garnered a number of nominations and awards from places like Sundance and Cannes. Hal is also a musician and has created the soundtracks for most of his films.A few weeks ago, Hal welcomed Mark and Andy into his apartment in the shadow of LaGuardia's flight paths to discuss space in comedy, mechanical structures vs. story structure, how directing a film is like running a construction site, and stories of Hartley family mishaps. And in the wrap-up, Andy and and his fiancee share some stories of their own mishaps. Also, check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see us live at the Del Close Marathon on June 29th with DC Pierson and Billy Merritt and live at UCB East on July 2nd with Wyatt Cenac, Mandy Stadtmiller (deputy editor of xoJane), musical guest Xenia Rubinos and a special guest from the world of hip hop!

A startlingly good production for you here, all. It's our analysis of claims made by people who want the government to force people to give "equal pay" to men and women at the workplace.
