In this 213th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss sex, gender, and plants. First up: sex is binary, gender is downstream of sex, and rare Disorders of Sexual Development do not put the lie to the sex binary. Then: Duke University is deep-sixing its world class herbarium. We discuss the value of natural history museums, and of libraries, and defend the liberal arts and sciences as fundamental not just to human inquiry, but to human flourishing.*****Our sponsors:Sole: Carefully designed, personally moldable footbeds for healthy feet. In this 211th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss Winter and seasonality, before a longer discussion of overfitting, shoe-horning, and straight-jacketing. How do models, collusion, and Occam's Razor contribute to how we understand the world? Why are generalists better situated to interpret complexity than are specialists? Then: how good is the science behind the major paper out of The Lancet that assures us that we should not be eating red meat? Answer: not very. Finally, we discuss the orcas who were trapped in sea ice off of Japan, and what it means to be an orca (including mention of the grandmother hypothesis).*****Our sponsors:MDHearing: To get our $397 when you buy a PAIR offer, head to Shopmdhearing.com and use code DARKHORSE. In this 210th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss hypotheses about the border situation. Having just returned from Panama, Bret hypothesizes that there are two immigrations happening: the migration driven by the pursuit of greater economic opportunities in the United States, which includes people from all over the world, and a lot of families; and a second, cryptic migration which includes mostly people from China, of military age, heavily skewed towards men. He also reviews a hypothesis from some years back, about the effect of the one-child policy in China, taken in concert with the tendency to prefer boys. We then discuss neurogenesis in pregnant mice; and also the “diaper spa” being opened in New Hampshire, which is only possible because we have stopped allowing ourselves to critique anti-social and anti-societal tendencies.*****Our sponsors:Maui Nui Venison: healthiest wild red meat on the planet, from steaks to bone broth to jerky. In this 209th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss misinformation and how dangerous it is, especially to mainstream researchers and media. We dissect research that claims to find evidence that “doing your own research” actually cements false views, and find that the research itself is so methodologically flawed as to be incapable of delivering accurate results. We celebrate the finding of Canada's Federal Court that the invoking of the Emergencies Act during the Trucker's Convoy was unconstitutional; and we discuss the WHO's faltering pandemic preparedness plan. And we briefly discussed Panama: what is happening in the Darien, in the Panama Canal, and why a monkey crossed the Canal. In this 208th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss how not to hand Goliath a win. Letting Goliath in on the social landscape of the dissidents, on the petty feuds and disagreements, is giving it power that it should not have. And we discuss Boeing's 737-9 Max airplanes: the one that blew out a door plug above Oregon; the FAA's response to that “in-flight departure”; and recent changes at Boeing, which include increasing the focus on product and employee safety and product quality, to now also focus on climate, and on Diversity Equity and Inclusion). Then: what does the absence of organisms where they once were mean? In the Exumas, Bahamas, this month, there were no laughing gulls. Eight months ago they were abundant in the same place. Could they be migrating? Might it be a pathogen? Local patchiness? Major decline for other reasons, like competition, or toxicity from plastics or pesticides? We discuss conservation success stories, like sea otters and bald eagles and California condors; and failures, like sea stars on the West coast of North America; and show some videos from the Bahamas. In this 203rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode we once again discuss college presidents, in light of what is happening at Harvard and other elite schools. We talk about historical and bureaucratic constraint, Evergreen, consulting firms, and plagiarism, and, in a related story, how someone acting on behalf of the Mayor of Boston mistakenly invited all 13 city councilors to a holiday party, when she meant to invite only the 6 who are “electeds of color.” Then: what do morbid curiosity and predator inspection have in common? People seem to be dying at high rates, and in new contexts, but is this actually the case? How would we know? What do the global excess mortality data suggest? Today's guest is very meaningful to me and probably requires no introduction. Dr. Heather Heying is the reason I know about detransitioners and am doing half the things I'm doing. An evolutionary biologist and animal behaviorist, world traveler, podcast co-host, writer, mentor to many, mother of two, agreeable contrarian, and all-around interesting person, Dr. Heying can easily be considered one of the greatest thinkers of our time.It was tough to narrow down what to focus on in a conversation with someone so influential, so I selected a few of the recurring themes that form the foundational principles for much of her work. We discuss the concepts of culture and consciousness, and how they shape our understandings of progress and tradition, liberalism and conservatism. We delve into the metaphorical idea of Chesterton's fence, which represents the importance of understanding the purpose and value of something before discarding it. And we examine several “Chesterton's fences” in modern life that have been impacted by what Heather often calls “hyper-novelty.” What do we lose when we stop sitting around a campfire together, telling stories and making music?Heather Heying is an evolutionary biologist who earned her PhD in Biology from the University of Michigan, has been a visiting Fellow at Princeton University, and was a tenured professor at The Evergreen State College. She has been invited to speak about science, higher ed, the evolution of sex and consciousness, and the culture wars, in venues as varied as the U.S. Department of Justice, the Krishnamurti Institute, Joe Rogan, and Oxford University. Her first book, Antipode, is based on her life in Madagascar while studying the sex lives of poison frogs. Her second book, co-authored with husband Bret Weinstein, is A Hunter-Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century: Evolution and the Challenges of Modern Life. A New York Times best-seller, the book provides an evolutionary toolkit for living a good and honorable life as a modern ape. She also writes Natural Selections on Substack, the Field Notes column for County Highway, and co-hosts with Bret a popular weekly livestream on the DarkHorse podcast.Natural Selections blogDarkHorse PodcastX @HeatherEHeyingHeather's books are available in my bookshop or via the embedded Amazon affiliate links. We compare this move to that of the WHO, and also to what happened at Evergreen, and to pretty much all “equity” maneuvers ever. We discuss the spread of viral information on-line, and how Renée DiResta would like to stop it. In light of Bari Weiss's speech, we discuss why anti-Semitism is on the rise. We discuss anti-semitism—its absence in Prague, its presence in London. We talk about the art and energy discussions at the ARC (Alliance for Responsible Citizenship) conference. Humans have never lived in such abundance as we do today. Yet we are miserable, divided, and lonely. We have everything we need to flourish, so why are we wilting? Today's extraordinary guests, Heather Heying and Bret Weinstein, say it's because the modern world is out of sync with our ancient brains and bodies! They explore this bold thesis in their book A Hunter Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century, which we will discuss extensively in this interview. Heather Heying and Bret Weinstein are evolutionary biologists who have been invited to address the US Congress, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Education and have spoken before audiences across the globe. They both earned PhDs in Biology from the University of Michigan, where their research on evolution and adaptation earned awards for its quality and innovation. They have been visiting fellows at Princeton University and, before that, were professors at the Evergreen State College for fifteen years. Join us as we explore evolution, the challenges of modern life, frogs, the American red squirrel, the education system, religion, and much more! Key Takeaways: Intro (00:00) Judging a book by its cover (01:17) What's so fascinating about frogs? (04:10) Is modern life out of sync with human biology? In this 197th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode we discuss the WHO's proposed amendments to their 2005 International Health Regulations. It's not good, as lawyer Philipp Kruse, and John Campbell, have already pointed out. These amendments, should they be approved, will mark the end of science, of democracy, and of justice. Then we discuss complexity, how to respond to complex situations, and Israel and Hamas. Our reflexes are being used to control us; life is being presented as a multiple-choice test, but we can resist that test. Finally, check out the progressive stack on the New Democratic Party convention in Canada. It's Bananas.*****Our sponsors:The Wellness Company: Services and supplements including Spike Support Formula, for vaccine injuries and long Covid. In this 196th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode we discuss astronomical events, like today's annular eclipse—that exist with or without human awareness of them. What would the ancients have thought of an eclipse? We discuss science, and the risk to us all as we take the S out of STEM, leaving an applied, human-centric set of fields that are missing their foundation. We discuss Roger Waters—his modern takes on Israel and Palestine, and his dreams and words as recorded in the music of Pink Floyd. In this 193rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode we discuss the middle-ground scramble by the mainstream media to defeat those who would think for themselves by inventing slurs like “conspiracy theorist influencer” and “reactionary trap.” Harper's says that “insurgency” is threatening the Democratic Party. The Atlantic invokes a world in which “mistakes don't matter, and no one feels shame,” not realizing that they're talking about themselves. And the New York Times goes after Bret for observing inconsistencies in official stories. As Isaac Asimov famously said, “The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not ‘Eureka!' but that's funny…'”*****Our sponsors:MUDWTR: is a coffee alternative with mushrooms and herbs (and cacao!) and is delicious, with 1/7 the caffeine as coffee. In this 192nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode we discuss how cattle got to the New World, and when and from where, and what that implies about the first cowboys. We discuss the fact that Nature published this compelling piece of research, and Science reported on it all wrong. We marvel that Nature admits that “scientists are under attack for someone else's political gain”—but are not surprised to find they've got it backwards. Meanwhile, the pangolin vector hypothesis for SARS-CoV2 is being revived, and bats are hung out to dry (metaphorically), based on bad, debunked research that was done by researchers with perverse incentives.*****Our sponsors:MDHearing: Use promo code DARKHORSE to receive a significant discount off your order of already inexpensive, high-quality hearing aids, plus receive a free extra charging case. https://www.mdhearingaid.comSundays: Dog food so tasty and healthy, even husbands swear by it. In this 191st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. In this episode we discuss climate science, models, and assumptions. How do urban heat, and assumptions of low vs high solar variability, affect climate models? Should apparent consensus among climate scientists give one pause? Are non-scientist humans capable of thinking for themselves? We discuss the difference between the environment, and climate, and discuss Apple's new video starring Mother Nature herself. In this episode we discuss new research that finds that 1 in 35 people getting a Moderna booster suffered heart damage, and ask whether it is only the spike protein, or also the mRNA platform more generally, that is at fault. We discuss the eradication of selective pressure in mRNA “vaccines” that do not include the actual pathogen. We discuss the effects of vaccine mandates on the U.S. military, both in terms of morale, and readiness, and return to an earlier discussion of the cheap trick used in research to reveal vaccine efficacy where there is none. In this 184th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. In this episode we discuss RuPaul's Drag Race, Barbie, and the deep state. How do drag and Barbie reveal similar confusions about sex and gender, feminism, and whether or not you've been red-pilled? Are drag queens women? Is Barbie? Then: an exploration of the meaning of the term “deep state,” its implications for recent American history, and its possible connection to capture, corruption, and foreign influence. In this 175th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In the last three years we have witnessed mass violations of the Hippocratic Oath, and of the Nuremberg Code. Which of the 10 principles of the Code have been breached during Covid—or indeed, have any notbeen? Why is the WHO simultaneously crowing about pushing Covid vaccines on Africans, and launching a fear campaign against salt? When did the propaganda and marketing arm take over our public health agencies? Meanwhile, Scientific American is making a bid for worst public health take by arguing that exclusively breastfeeding your infant is neither nature's way, nor important. And The Atlantic Monthly enters the fray by saying the quiet part out loud, admitting that the Covid vaccines were in fact one very large experiment on an uninformed populace, who could therefore not give consent.*****Our sponsors:Helix: Excellent, sleep-enhancing, American-made mattresses. In this 174th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. The Press Secretary said this week that “These are our kids. They belong to all of us.” Conservatives had a predictable meltdown. Is she right, or is she wrong? What are the “sides” in this debate? Are there more than two sexes? Can a human transition between sexes? Are we sliding back towards regressive gender norms, and embracing social contagion and mental illness? With regard to a Florida bill restricting gender transition interventions for minors, an ER doc said that it is his job to “take care” of people, regardless of their beliefs. True. But what does it mean to take care? The two sides in this debate fundamentally disagree about what constitutes care. Finally, Bret invites Eliezer Yudkowsky to debate AI, LLM's and complex vs. complicated systems. ***** Our sponsors: Sole: Carefully designed, personally moldable footbeds for healthy feet. In this 173rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. First up this week, we discuss SARS-CoV2—again!—in light of new research that finds no evidence for a zoonotic origin at the Huanan Seafood Market. Science is not faring well these days. We also discuss AI “doomers,” and why that's a misleading epithet. A new product that'll keep your produce fresh with absolutely no downsides is now on fruit near you! In this 172nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. First up this week, we discuss Spring and sea stars (also known as starfish, and asteroids). Then we discuss “new” research being discussed in the New York Times which finds that long telomeres shorten life, a prediction made by Bret over 20 years ago. We discuss hypothesis, theory, science and citation, and observe that “science” doesn't seem to have learned anything from the giant scientific debacle that was the signature of the Covid era. Finally, we discuss modernity, fertility and feminism, and point out—not for the first time—that we cannot go back, but must go forward with caution and care. ***** Our sponsors: Cured: Nootropics designed with care and intention, third-party tested to ensure purity. In this 171st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. This week we discuss why businesses aren't acting like businesses. Why did Fox fire Tucker Carlson? Why did Anheuser-Busch hire Dylan Mulvaney? Why did Twitter of old throw people off for engaging in WrongThink? Why does YouTube continue to strike people for talking to the wrong people—people like democratic candidate for president Robert F Kennedy, Jr? Part of the answer is in the ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) agenda. ESG is social credit for corporations, and it is being used by Goliath to facilitate a new kind of fascism.*****Our sponsors:Seed: Start a new healthy habit today with Seed probiotics. In this 170th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. This week we discuss the sun and the Earth. Near Infrared Radiation (NIR) from the sun penetrates deep inside our bodies, where it stimulates our mitochondria to produce subcellular melatonin, a potent antioxidant. Spend time outside to reap the health benefits. And: It is Earth Day! Let us reject reductionism, specialization, and dependence, and remember our roots on the land, making and growing and producing things with our own hands: let us be producers, not merely consumers. Always, we can learn from Wendell Berry. Sports bras are a useful item of clothing for women engaged in certain kinds of sports; they are not a fashion accessory, but are being used as such, and as a weapon in the culture wars. Then: Substack announced a new product that will be compete with Twitter, and Twitter responded with chaos; “friendly fire” between two of the few companies that seek to protect free speech is bad for everyone. Also: what are electric unicycles, and how fun and safe are they?
