When the aliens landed, they told a young musician and wannabe race car driver that he was the chosen one, and they were the real gods. He should build them an embassy with a UFO landing pad in order to prepare humanity for their arrival. They taught him the secrets of sex meditation and cloning DNA as a way to keep switching bodies and never die. Not much in his story was original, but this was the 1970s, so free love hippies flocked to his French commune—then it all turned to shit. Somehow Claude kept landing on his feet. He took his schtick to Quebec, then Japan, and even found thousands of followers in Africa. Still no embassy, no divine alien arrival, no cloned human babies—but he kept raising funds from the gullible and living like a king with a ballerina bride 40 years his junior. Since homo sapiens gained consciousness and self-awareness, we've been asking some big questions…what does it all mean?... What's the purpose of existence?... Is there something more to life and the universe than what I can see?... This has led us down all kinds of spiritual journeys and rabbit holes…for billions, this means turning to religion…but what if traditional spirituality and beliefs don't cut it?...if you're not careful, you might find yourself in a cult… Maybe you're seduced by a charismatic leader who claims to have all the answers when it comes to religion, philosophy, spirituality, and maybe even politics…it's non-mainstream stuff, which is part of the appeal…maybe this leader and his followers really do have all the answers to everything you've been searching for… Here's where things get weird…you're introduced to unorthodox teachings, strange rituals, odd practices, and wild belief systems…maybe you're given a task or caught up in the group's goals and objectives… Then we get into mind control, brainwashing, shaming, suppression of individual identities, totalitarian enforcement of behaviour, separation from family and friends, and even terrorism, violence, and death… There are thousands of groups around the world…many are generally benign hare Krishnas, for example…others are sketchy and warrant skepticism…I'd put the wacky Raelians in that group…and a few are downright dangerous…think the Heaven's Gate UFO group and suicide cult in San Diego… Now: what happens when you mix cults with music?...a lot of very, very bad things…I'm Alan Cross and this is Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry, episode 13…have i got some stories for you…this is what can happen when music and cults intersect… Show contact info: X (formerly Twitter): @AlanCross Website: curiouscast.ca Email: Alan@alancross.ca Learn more about your ad choices. Raelism, or the Raelian Movement, is another UFO religion and claims to be the largest. The Raelians are the followers of a cult founded in 1974 by the French auto racing journalist Claude Vorilhon. They have had two symbols to represent their cult; a swastika embedded on the Star of David, which was later replaced by a variant star and swirl symbol. They seek to use cloning as a way to achieve immortality. They founded Valiant Venture Ltd Corporation in 1997, to research human cloning. The company changed its name later to Clonaid. The government of France classifies the Raelian Movement as a "secte," meaning "cult."Claude Vorilhon wrote, "The Message Given by Extra-Terrestrials: At Last Science Replaces Religion," and some other books. Vorilhon, now known as Rael (meaning, "messenger of the Elohim") as he is now known, was allegedly contacted by aliens and told many mysteries; such as life was originally established upon earth some 22,000 +/- years ago through genetic manipulation by extraterrestrials. These aliens desire to return to earth - at Jerusalem in the yet to be built Elohim Embassy where a one world government will be established with is a single currency, language, etc.Support the show

In 1973, a French motorsports journalist claimed to have been visited by a UFO that revealed to him the secret origins of humanity. For the next half-century, the man known as Raël would go on to create a new faith with tens of thousands of adherents all around the world. The media have portrayed the Raelians as not just a cult, but a strange phantasmagoria of extraterrestrials, orgies and clones. But its followers insist it is the only true path forward for humanity.Featured in this episode: Nicole Bertrand, Susan J. Dr Andrew Manns is a historian and the creator behind The Thinker's Garden, a blog specialising in overlooked history. As editor, he has written and published a variety of historiettes on little-known Bohemians, occultists, and mystics, such as the “Los Angeles Noah” (Reverend J.E. Lewis), Lady Walburga Paget, and Baron Seymour Kirkup. Today takes us through his research into the little known folklore and occult history of the Auvergne a little-known historic province in central France. Which he has dubbed the ‘Transylvania of France'. In the Plus show we get into the legends of Lake Pavin (the storm-raising lake). An interesting angle on the lost children plane crash from Colombia story from earlier in the year. And Andrew tells us about the unique healing tradition of the “Guerisseurs” which is absolutely fascinating. Andrew wraps up with an interesting note on the belief in the area that fairies can be seen at a certain high altitude. Before we begin our program today, I want to read from a report from CNN, from 2002."The leader of a religious sect that claimed to have created the first human clone Friday called the development "just the first step" toward human immortality through cloning.Former French journalist Claude Vorilhon, who now calls himself Rael, claims to be a direct descendant of extraterrestrials who created human life on Earth through genetic engineering. A company founded by his followers announced Friday that the first human clone has been born -- a 7-pound baby girl dubbed "Eve."The announcement was met with skepticism and concern, since other cloned mammals have had serious birth defects or developed health problems later. But in an interview with CNN, Rael dismissed concerns about health problems in cloned animals, saying, "I have no doubt the child will be perfectly healthy."The Raelians eventually hope to develop adult clones into which humans could transfer their brains, Rael said."Today we present one of the most interesting interviews Rick Wiles has ever conducted. In this conversation from March 6, 2002, Rick speaks with Rael, where they discuss cloning, the origins of humanity, and visitors from space. Buckle up, here's Rick.Rick Wiles, Doc Burkhart. Episode 97 of our book read/podcast covering major topics in various fields of psychology moves us into PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION! This summer we are going to discuss religion from a psychological and historical perspective as we investigate the evolutionary origins and modern social systems of religion. In this episode we discuss THE RAPTURE and other apocalyptic events! What happens when the world ends, what happens when predictions are made and then…well nothing. We posit some reasons why people predict and others believe in raptures and end times prophecies, discuss secular variations of them, and muse on Left Behind, Revelations, and other popularized raptures across history. Man Seeks God – Flirtations with the Divine with Eric WeinerAired Thursday, March 31, 2022 at 4:00 PM PST / 7:00 PM EST“Have you found your God yet?” That blunt question, uttered by a well-meaning nurse to Eric Weiner after a health scare landed him in hospital launched the NY Times bestselling author on a far-flung journey across the globe to explore multiple religions in the hope of coming to a personal understanding of the divine and “find a faith that fits.” A self-confessed “spiritual voyeur” and inveterate traveler who was privy to a wide range of religious practices, but who had never seriously considered these concepts in his own life, Eric Weiner ‘s willingness to do anything to better understand faith saw him meditating with Tibetan lamas in Nepal, whirling with Sufi Dervishes in Turkey, unblocking his ‘chi' in China, studying Kabbalah in Israel, and “enjoying” (?) a close encounter in Las Vegas with Raelians (followers of the world's largest UFO-based religion). At each stop along the way, he tackled our most pressing spiritual questions:• Where do we come from?• What happens when we die?• How should we live our lives?• Where do all the missing socks go?Eric Weiner joins Sandie this week to share his adventures and insights.ERIC WEINER is a philosophical traveler, writer, and recovering malcontent. He is author of The New York Times bestsellers The Geography of Bliss and The Geography of Genius, as well as the critically acclaimed Man Seeks God and, his latest book, The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers. His books have been translated into more than 24 languages. A former foreign correspondent for National Public Radio, Eric was posted in New Delhi, Jerusalem and Tokyo. His work has also appeared in the New Republic, The Atlantic, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, and the anthology “Best American Travel Writing.” Eric leads several writing workshops each year, and is co-founder of the Himalayan Writing Workshop. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why Our Kind Can't Cooperate, published by Eliezer Yudkowskyon the LessWrong. From when I was still forced to attend, I remember our synagogue's annual fundraising appeal. It was a simple enough format, if I recall correctly. The rabbi and the treasurer talked about the shul's expenses and how vital this annual fundraise was, and then the synagogue's members called out their pledges from their seats. Straightforward, yes? Let me tell you about a different annual fundraising appeal. One that I ran, in fact; during the early years of a nonprofit organization that may not be named. One difference was that the appeal was conducted over the Internet. And another difference was that the audience was largely drawn from the atheist/libertarian/technophile/sf-fan/early-adopter/programmer/etc crowd. (To point in the rough direction of an empirical cluster in personspace. If you understood the phrase "empirical cluster in personspace" then you know who I'm talking about.) I crafted the fundraising appeal with care. By my nature I'm too proud to ask other people for help; but I've gotten over around 60% of that reluctance over the years. The nonprofit needed money and was growing too slowly, so I put some force and poetry into that year's annual appeal. I sent it out to several mailing lists that covered most of our potential support base. And almost immediately, people started posting to the mailing lists about why they weren't going to donate. Some of them raised basic questions about the nonprofit's philosophy and mission. Others talked about their brilliant ideas for all the other sources that the nonprofit could get funding from, instead of them. (They didn't volunteer to contact any of those sources themselves, they just had ideas for how we could do it.) Now you might say, "Well, maybe your mission and philosophy did have basic problems—you wouldn't want to censor that discussion, would you?" Hold on to that thought. Because people were donating. We started getting donations right away, via Paypal. We even got congratulatory notes saying how the appeal had finally gotten them to start moving. A donation of $111.11 was accompanied by a message saying, "I decided to give a little bit more. One more hundred, one more ten, one more single, one more dime, and one more penny. All may not be for one, but this one is trying to be for all." But none of those donors posted their agreement to the mailing list. Not one. So far as any of those donors knew, they were alone. And when they tuned in the next day, they discovered not thanks, but arguments for why they shouldn't have donated. The criticisms, the justifications for not donating—only those were displayed proudly in the open. As though the treasurer had finished his annual appeal, and everyone not making a pledge had proudly stood up to call out justifications for refusing; while those making pledges whispered them quietly, so that no one could hear. I know someone with a rationalist cause who goes around plaintively asking, "How come the Raelian flying-saucer cult can get tens of thousands of members [probably around 40,000] interested in complete nonsense, but we can't even get a thousand people working on this?" The obvious wrong way to finish this thought is to say, "Let's do what the Raelians do! Let's add some nonsense to this meme!" For the benefit of those not immediately stopped by their ethical inhibitions, I will observe that there may be a hundred failed flying-saucer cults for every one that becomes famous. And the Dark Side may require non-obvious skills, which you, yes you, do not have: Not everyone can be a Sith Lord. In particular, if you talk about your planned lies on the public Internet, you fail. I'm no master criminal, but even I can tell certain people are not cut out to be crooks. So it's probably not a...

France! Australia! Oy! Hon hon! Today we go deep—down under, even—into the Raelians, France and French Canada's clone-happy UFO booster club, and see if it's a better fit for us than Kenja, Australia's sorta home-grown, sorta ripped off from Scientology cash vacuum. Raelism (not realism) is, at the very least, a cult where you're less likely to be burned to death for the knights templar than France's other entry into the series. Kenja, meanwhile, may have out-Scientologied Scientology in a few key respects. Join us for bad accents, at least one suppressive person, and the gripping origin story of Corn Thins.
The Children of God(1968) A group formed in the late '60s in Hunting Beach CA buy their leader David Berge who preach a mixture of believing in Jesus and the 60s era free love believing of course that the end times were near. At one point the group had over 15000 members including many now-famous families of Joaquin Phenix and Rose McGowin. What was really going on when the encouragement and practices of abuse of its younger members. This lead to both famous families leaving and relocating out of the Us before returning in the late 70s. Even. In the end, after both of its leaders passed in 1994 after being investigated by the FBI their then 29-year-old son committed suicide after also dispatching a once nanny who had a hand in his abuse when he was young. The Group is still active but no longer believe the apocalypse is near and still has about 1700 followers in the greater California area. The Order of the Solar Temple Founded in 1984 by Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret, the Order of the Solar Temple and the International Chivalric Organization of the Solar Temple claimed to be based on the traditions and ideals of a Knights Templar. The group believed that the spiritual outweighed physical, and they also believe in the second coming of Christ as a “Solar deity or God-King” and called for the unity of Christianity and Islam. Pulling inspiration from the Order of the East Temple headed by Aleister Crowley, from 1923 until his death on December 1, 1947, as well as the Order of the Golden Dawn, the Freemasons, and other Rosicrucian groups. The Order of the Solar Temple had lodges all over the world including Switzerland, Canada, and France. The Order had a level and grading system with the three levels being the Brothers of Parvis, the Knights of the Alliance, and the Brothers of Ancient Times, each containing thee grades in each level. The top 33 members were in a group known as the Elder Brothers of the Rosy Cross. As one increases in level, there would be fees and the purchasing of costumes and regalia, which included a Crusader-Like robe. The Lodges had elaborate alters and rituals and the members were told that Di Mambro had an authentic Templar sword gifted to him over a thousand years ago previous life past life Most notably in October of 1994, Emmanuel Dutoit the three months old son Tony Dutoit was stabbed multiple times with wooden Stakes in a lodge located Morin-Heights Quebec. Allegedly Di Mambro ordered the attack claiming the child was the Antichrist sent to sabotage his spiritual work. Shortly after DiMambro and 12 followers report performed a ritual of The Last Supper after which mass murders and suicide in sued resulting in the deaths of 74 individuals between 1994 and 1997. Raelism Founded in the 70s by Claud Vorilhon (aka Rael) in France. The Church believes that the Elohim, an alien race, created humanity in their likeness. Rael claimed that on December 13, 1973, that he was visited by the Elohim and gave him these teachings. They claim that the Elohim were mistaken as angels and gods and were worshiped by early humans. Raelians believe that the Elohim will guide the earth to scientific enlightenment and have us join the creators in space. They believe in free love, scientific discovery, and cloning. The True Way Cult (1955 Taiwan) Was formed by a former professor who was clearly nuts. Its beliefs are that the universe is only 4.5 million years old. The solar system was created by a Nuclear War. We all have 3 souls.

Hello, Lovelies! Have you ever heard of Raëlianism? (a.k.a. Raelism) In 1973, Claude Vorilhon followed a sudden urge to visit a nearby, dormant volcano where he first met one of the "Elohim" who had traveled to earth in a bell-shaped spacecraft from a distant plant to give Claude a message. This message caused Claude to start the International Raelian Movement. It was at this point Claude changed his name to Raël. Weird? Rebecca thought so too. Hey remember how cults were all the rage in the 90s? Kira Nerys does. Should she be more ready to disengage from Dukat's tiresome shenanigans at this point? What cult is this? Koresh or Applewhite? Say what you will about this, it has a hard target. Dipping into a warm bath of cults. The Jesus Movement vs more repressive religion of the 80s/90s. Heaven's Gate Aum Shinrinko and Raelians. Heaven shopping on the promenade. Is Dukat's arc starting to fray at this point? When did Kira's Sunday school teacher become a Satanist? How does this tie into Qanon? Are these targets too easy? James asks for both sides of the issue. How does Dukat resemble a scandal plagued preacher? Lord forgive me, I gotta go back to the old me. Wade is a dummy who can't remember Jared Padalecki's character on Gilmore Girls. Cardassian baby facepaint, fake babies, and what's up with this baby? Would Kira be less messy and dramatic in a more serialized show? How can an intelligent person believe some of this hokum their culty religion is pushing on them when it's obvious where dat baby came from? Some pah wraith world building with Paradise Lost. Corman-ing in the airlock. The writer bashing you've come to expect from the RoA. Hey, the title of this episode actually makes pretty good sense. Why Fala had to die. What if HBO made it? Are YOU a member of a cult, preferably a sex cult? Call the hotline! 917 408 3898

Once a year, an indeterminate number of feminists, exhibitionsits and horny guys pretending to sympathize with an agenda they don't fully understand march topless from Columbus Circle through Times Square and finally to Bryant Park where they congregate in a topless rally which, in some small measure, is designed to crush the tesiticles of "The Patriarchy." "News Whore" Mandy Stadtmiller agreed to meet up and go to Columbus Circle to walk along, talk to some of the paricipants and see if I could talk her into taking off her shirt. This is what happened.
In this week's episode, we'll learn that the TPP, the TPIP, and TP are equally deserving of having feces wiped on them; Senator Bob Menendez will learn that pimpin' ain't easy; the Raelians will remind us that Scientology isn't the only foaming-at-the-mouth crazy UFO cult game in town, and the state of Indiana gets an invisible gay hand job from the market.
With the full crew in attendance, episode 285 of The Reality Check delivers some top notch skeptical content. Adam starts things off by looking into the Raelian movement and their clitoral restoration efforts. Next, Pat brings us the second half of his journey into how to plan for your own death. Elan closes out the show by answering a listener voicemail about drinking fluids when you're sick.

In his new book, Man Seeks God: My Flirtations with the Divine (Twelve, 2011), Eric Weiner, former correspondent for both NPR and the New York Times, confronts his spiritual side after a medical emergency takes him too close to death. Weiner’s quest to understand faith carries him across the globe, from Las Vegas, where he gets to know a few Raelians a little more closely than he’d like, to Turkey, where he practices whirling with Sufi dervishes. In our interview, we talked about whether his frequent jokes are a defense mechanism of some kind, why his Hebrew school experience lacked meaning, how the Rinpoche insulted Cher, and why people seem to need to find some type of divine meaning in life.
