Michelle McGrath, a vet working with Animal Health Ireland, tells Stuart Childs on this week's Dairy Edge podcast about a number of Department of Agriculture funded animal health consultations that farmers can avail of through their vets. Michelle says that, for farmers struggling with their bulk SCC, there is an in-lactation consult available to help farmers take the first steps towards getting control of their cell count.  This process involves farm advisors and milking machine technicians as well as the farm vet however, the first step on this journey begins with the initial consult with the vet.  While this is targeted at herds that have SCC problems, if people would like to learn more about being more in control of their SCC, they can also apply. It is important to note though that the deadline for application for this consult is Oct 31st. On a similar line, Michelle also spoke about the TASAH funded dry cow consult available to help farmers embark on sealer only dry cow strategy to allow them to comply with the new regulations introduced earlier this year.  There are also consults available on Parasite control and Johnes control as well as BVD and TB in the case of breakdowns of either disease on farms. Finally, Michelle points out that there is a great resource of information on animal health on the Animal Health Ireland website and encourages people to visit it to view articles, videos and lots of other information in relation to the main diseases that affect farmers. For more episodes from the Dairy Edge podcast go to the show page at: https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/dairy/the-dairy-edge-podcast/ The Dairy Edge is a co-production with LastCastMedia.com

Good Beer Hunting

As a total percentage of the beverage alcohol industry, cider hasn’t really changed much in recent years. It amounts to about 1% and has been successfully static. I know a lack of growth doesn’t really sound like a success, and 1% doesn’t sound like a lot, but trust me on this one. Or, rather, trust Michelle McGrath. She’s the executive director of the American Cider Association and while it’s certainly her job to speak highly of the category and the success of her members, she’s bringing the data to back it up in this conversation about a category that often gets overlooked in a country more interested in narratives of hard seltzers, ready-to-drink, canned cocktails, spirits, or Hazy IPAs. But the maturation of cider as a category and industry is fascinating, especially as a drink that’s holding its own as so many other options have entered the market. Again, that 1% doesn’t sound thrilling, but wait until we put it in context of how hard things are for beer right now. Aside from the story of cider as a pure agricultural product, there’s also another area worth our attention, and that’s the outsized role that small cider producers are playing. The largest, national brands are lagging, and these small and independent businesses have picked up the slack—which might sound familiar to the stories of the beer world we hear so often. 1% is a small number, but it feels a bit bigger when you learn about how it’s maintained. When Michelle and I recently spoke, she just finished hosting the industry’s annual conference, CiderCon, so a lot of these things were fresh on our minds, and her’s was full of stories to give context to a category that may be just 1%, but according to Nielsen, has grown 10 times its size over the last decade.

As part of AHI and Teagasc CalfCare Virtual Week, Michelle McGrath, Muireann Conneely and Niamh Field join Emma-Louise Coffey on this week's Dairy Edge podcast to discuss the care of the newborn calf to maximise health in the early days. Michelle explains that calves are born with no immunity and rely on colostrum to protect them against disease in the first weeks of life until they establish their own immunity. Michelle outlines the priority is the first milk from the cow within the first two hours of life and at least three litres in quantity. Muireann identifies the igG as the most important immunoglobulin contained in colostrum and explains that farms should target an igG concentration of at least 50 mg/ml, which reads 22 on the Brix Refractometer. Niamh then gives advice on how to eliminate or minimise the risk of exposure to Johnes disease. Calving pens should be kept clean and calves should be removed from calving pens as soon as possible to reduce the chances of interacting with cow faeces. Any cow that has tested positive for Johnes or a cow that is displaying symptoms of Johnes should be calved separately and their colostrum and milk should not be fed to calves. In the meanwhile, if you are in or headed to North Carolina go to this link to find out where you purchase some James Creek Ciders. The Thorntons have two Cider labels. The James Creek Heritage Ciders which are bottled in 750ML glass presentations! And the Stargazer series, which provide a compliment of modern style ciders. Read: fruit ciders and not just any fruit ciders but peaches and berries from their farm! We sipped on the Prowling Peach, a barrel aged cider with peach juice. I was over the moon for this cider. Plus peach is not an easy fruit to work with! All of James Creek Ciders were super tasty and you definitely tell made with a ton of affection for the process. All the apples come from within an area of 100-150 miles and are North Carolina grown. Keep an eye out for these makers, cuz they are not going away in fact they are a perfect example of #ciderGoingUP in North Carolina They began planting apples trees in 2009, putting in 60 classic southern apple varieties. 166 Cider Chat Live | Life off CiderCon2019 I was able to squeak in a mini episode before setting off to Chicago for the annual cider trade conference “CiderCon” hosted by the United States Association of Cider Makers. I’ve been talking a lot about CiderCon leading up to this week of February 4-9, 2019. With 1000 people attending from all parts of the world, it is the Talk of the Town - for those of us who are hooked on all things cider. Below is my schedule of recordings - I have a pretty simple set up to track who I will be speaking to and when. I am stoked that I will have more time at workshops recording, versus hidden away in a back room doing interviews. It’s not that I don’t like interviews, but when I heard last year that no one saw me for most of CiderCon in Baltimore - I realized that just ain’t right. So this CiderCon - I have set up an number on seminar and panel recordings. Even as I am flying to Chicago right now - I am getting direct messages in Twitter from makers who are going to CiderCon and looking to chat. Luckily I have also learned to leave a few open slots for just these kind of meet ups. Here is the recording schedule thus far - Feb 5th Tuesday Arrive…get landed  find half and half for morning coffee that me and my hotel mate Erica can use for the bad ass French press she is bringing (dang sure glad I agreed to room with Erica who also is one of the biggest, joyful cider enthusiasts around …my kind of cider person!) Lee Reeve - InCider Japan  6-7pm - note to self, bring the bottle of Calvados - must do a swig with Lee, whom I am stoked to meet. Little Pomona - 7pm - I must catch up with Susanna and James Forbes - Already have my copy of The Cider Insider, that Susanna just wrote - and would love to talk to her about this awesome book! A must have - links to buy on the Cider Chat resource page The Northman Cider Bar tonight…maybe or lay low and pace myself…we will see Feb 6th amWednesday 9-10 Simon Day - Once Upon a Tree | UK - I am so excited to meet Simon and hear his tales and drink his cider!!! 1-3pm Pomme Boots Meeting - Krista Scruggs of ZAFA wines is speaking!!! 3-4pm Media - I think as media I get to go to the Cider Share early - weeeeeee 4-6:30pm Cider Share - Heaven on earth - walking about a room full of cider and the makers 7pm - James Creek Ciderhouse, North Carolina - a cider dinner and recording with Ann Marie and David Thornton???? “Yes - please” Feb 7th Thursday 10:15am - Beginning Cidermaker panel  - continental A - I get to moderate and introduce this powerhouse panel. 10:15am Dryness - Williford C - I will be recording this key presentation with folks from the New York Cider Association - Jen Smith is the Ex Director and I Heart Jen! 12 - 1pm Attorney Marc Sorini is speaking during lunch on the History of Alcohol! I had to coax Marc to allow me to record! Can’t wait to hear this presentation!!! 3-4:30pm oak - Ryan Monkman - Wiliford A-B - Ryan of Ontario - …based on Prince Edward County and maker of Field Bird Cider - If you haven’t listen to Barrels and Bàtonnage with Ryan - DO - he is amazing. and I adore him, Feb 7th Thursday evening open - who knows where I will be once the sun goes down. One thing for sure, I will have a glass of cider in my hand. Feb 8th Friday 10:15am Embracing & Encouraging Diversity - Continental C - yowza - this is a powerhouse panel 12:30am Michelle McGrath - lunch speaker - I want to record Michelle - she is the perfect fit for the USACM and the fact that she is doing all that she does and is pregnant to boot! Michelle McGrath is the Executive Director of the United States Association of Cider Makers, a trade association for the cider industry. In this episode she chats on the mission of the USACM, the goals for the year, the upcoming Cider Conference (CiderCon) and the Pick Cider initiative for Thanksgiving. The four core mandates of the Association Advance cider in the market Increase opportunities for peer learning Promoting a cider friendly regulatory environment Supporting the cider apple growers   The USACM has over 1300 members. 95% of cidery members are making less than 500,000 gallons/year Membership in the USACM is tiered. For instances, The Cidery In Planning is $175. And there is even a tier level for "Home Cidermaker/Enthusiast" - $75.00 (USD) Find out more info at http://www.ciderassociation.org/join Michelle provided an overview of the Cider Act that comes into effect in 2017 It will increase the allowable carbonation in cider Increase the allowable alcohol content from 7% to 8.5% Perry will now fall under the definition of allowable cider. And, there is a change in the Bond requirement for small cider producers, if not all alcohol producers. If you owe less than $50,000 a year in taxes, the government is going to stop requiring a Bond. If you already have a Bond, will get it back. BUT YOU have to request your Bond back and prove that you are a small producer.   Michelle also discussed: The Craft Beverage Modernization Act that is still yet to be passed. Within this ACT there is a component that benefits small wineries. It expands the small producers tax credit. Right now the credit is available to producers of 150,000 gallons or less and will up that amount up 750,000 gallons or 3/4 of a million. And, there will be a Request for Proposals (RFP) for research grants coming up in 2017 too. What is happening with CiderCon? Where is it? It takes place on February 8th, 9th and 10th in Chicago. Here is a sneak peak into this year's special guests from France! Note the dates below might not be set in stone, always check the conference schedule ahead of time. 1.       French Perry - Thursday, Feb. 9th @ 1:30pm – Daufresne Poiré & Christian Drouin Poiré. 2.       Keeving - Thursday, Feb. 9th @3:15pm – Le Brun Brut Cidre de Bretegne, Le Brun Organic Cidre (demi-sec), Le Brun Cidre AOP Cornouaille. 3.       Calvados - Friday, Feb. 10th @ 1:30pm – Guillaume Drouin to present on his own and select a range of his Calvados and Pommeau. 4.       Grand Cider Tasting - Friday, Feb. 10th @ 5:15pm – All 3 French presenters on the panel.
